MSI Z790 Carbon Max WiFi II Review: The Ultimate Gaming Motherboard?

- For quite some time now, I’ve been using MSI’s Z790 Carbon WIFI motherboard in my test bench which I’ve used to conduct various benchmarks, test out various hardware and configurations. Now MSI has followed up with the Z790 Carbon MAX WIFI II motherboard which brings with it some nice quality of life upgrades, features and specifications. One of the things I’m very much looking forward to testing out is the board’s overclocking capabilities when it comes to DDR5 Memory. 4 dimm boards are especially quite difficult to work with when it comes to high frequencies so let’s see if this board can outshine the competition. MSI has validated some kits on their qvl rated for speed of up to 7800MT/s, so let’s put that to the test! Along with that we cover some additional accessories included, go through the rest of the UEFI, and showcase other features.

I'm really looking forward to what the Z890 Unify-X can do! I really wish they would have launched a Z790 version. I've had several MSI Unify, Unify-X, and Tomahawk Z490, Z690, and Z790 boards. All of them are still working and have given me zero issues. I think Asus and MSI offer some of the best motherboards.
Agreed unify-x series has a great rep and they're 2 dimm so great for memory OC
you should try ASRock, MSI has some advantage at coffee-lake gen, because they have exclusive feature 'memory try it'
The ALC 4080 audiotek chip is absolute garbage. It uses a USB implementation that causes all kinds of problems. I have it in my X670E carbon and the SPDIF and analog outputs are pretty much useless. on the optical output the audio will randomly cut out and won't come back unless I reboot. on the analog jacks there's constant pops and hiss, but weirdly only on the motherboard jacks. If I plug headphones into my case's front panel audio (which is usually worse in most cases) it's fine for some reason. The only way to get decent audio out of the board is using a USB DAC to connect the speakers. If you search reddit you'll find a ton of other people having similar issues with it.
I put a soundblaster ae5 pure on my carbon wifi and it sounds way better than the onboard audio. The sound separation and clarity is awesome. It caused my gpu to go down to x8 but it doesn’t effect gaming
У меня тоже щелкает при просмотре Ютуба ... Какую недорогую аудио карту отдельную посоветуете?
Reviews of motherboards should include ram ocing as well, all we get nowadays is vrm testing if even that. Many techtubers just do a hardware overview of motherboards... Techtubers these days just suck compared to hw reviews we had pre youtube. PS The onboard "sound cards" are crap on all boards, I had to get a proper audio interface for my studio monitors.
been using 7800mt/s on my 12700k/z790 itx board for a long while now, was stuck on 6800mt/s(with the 12700k and 13900kf) on my 6layer atx boards before I went back to itx again.
the CARBON is an excellent board (I have the 690 variant), but you pay for ARGB even if you don't want it. All my boards are MSI (+ 2 Unify & 1 Pro) and I now prefer Unify or Tomahawk over the Carbon, in large part because ARGB was a one-time experiment. The major selling points of CARBON are the 5 NVMe slots, and the VRM, IMHO.
Good video as always! Keep it up! I like MSI boards. I’ve owned two of them now. Both have served me well.
As much as I enormously agree with the premise that a mobo at this price should be much better packaged and shown, and frankly should be the standard. Unfortunately Msi and ASUS alike both no longer see $300-400 as a high end mobo anymore and could clearly not give af about u as the consumer. Now days, to get a piece or 2 of better packaged board with maybe some plastic or foam surrounding it, u need to not be a broke pos (according to the mobo manufacturers) and spend $600+ like a rich mf. Otherwise, they don’t care about u, period.
really good detail. thanks
If you apply the default power limits you will lose performance. It's something i wouldn't do. Also id recommend buying the 48gb ddr5 kits if you want higher ram speed's. They're slightly easier on the ram controller
Pretty disappointed, currently using this mobo and trying to stabilize an A Die 7600 kit, it’s simply not happening. I know XMP isn’t guaranteed, but I didn’t expect it to be this stubborn.
Nice video, mate! I've got the AM5 version of the MSI Carbon Max WiFi II. It's a beast mode motherboard for my 7800X3D/4080 Suprim X.
Can you confirm if this board has a VR VOUT sensor? TIA
@@abzaman77 yes it does
@@DannyzReviews thanks!
I'm doing my first ever build with this MoBo. 14700K + 4070 Ti Super OC.
7800x3d thank me later
How many layers does this board have?
8
Thank you for doing motherboard reviews.
How was the 4090 temps with the add in card?
i love how mine doesn’t have wifi for some reason
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I am a current LGA 1700 owner. However, I couldn't recommend building a new system with this dead-end platform.
Totally agree especially when the new cpu will be out before Christmas
LoL.
I don’t like it. 1. The top pcie slot position is too low. 2. It doesn’t do dual pcie x8 configuration, which should be a standard for a Carbon board.
Imagine buying anything but AM5
🤡
Intel 1700 is better for multitasking because of the "E-cores". AM5 is great if you are only gaming.
@@JamesSmith-sw3nk 7950x and 14900k have the same performance in multitasking
I have a 13900k in s790 carbon Wi-Fi and yes I agree with your statement amd/am5 with 7800x3d is God tier sad I wasted money
