AMD RX 8800XT a GIANT Leap for Mainstream Gamers! - The UDNA Strategy

  • In today’s video, we’ll be discussing AMD’s bold new direction with their RDNA4 architecture and the introduction of the RX 8800XT. With promises of RTX 4080-level performance at a mainstream price point, AMD seems poised to capture the attention of gamers who’ve been waiting for a more affordable high-performance GPU. But is this move part of a well-thought-out plan or just damage control for their shifting priorities? I’ll be breaking down the contradictions in their messaging, exploring the unification of RDNA and CDNA into UDNA, and why this shift might reveal AMD’s true focus on AI and HPC, with gaming being a secondary priority. We’ll also discuss whether this strategy will truly benefit the gaming community or if it’s just a PR move to mask deeper issues.

      If the 7000 series was really 30 percent under the design goals due to a design flaw, getting at least 4070TI Super performance in the 8800XT is reasonable.
      If it adds AI upscaling, doubles the ray tracing performance over 7800XT and cost 500 bucks, I'm buying one.
      I'm really hoping that the new goal of building market share means that they won't make pricing mistakes like they did with the 7900XT.

The products are solid, but they fall so far behind the hype that they come across as disappointments. This is associated with more and more company bankruptcies and mass redundancies. In addition, inflation is still high and prices for food and energy continue to rise. @@peter2liter 12gb isn't really a barrier at present, and while it WILL eventually become one I don't think that's happening in 2025.
      Yes, you can deliberately push some games with some features to 12gb reserved vram even at 1080, but those examples are pretty badly optimised.
      Plus, Nvidia has always been more memory efficient than AMD, so a 12gb barrier will tend to hit an 8700XT harder than a 4070 Ti or 5070.
      Also, just matching last generation's RT capability is gonna mean very little when 2025's path tracing based games come out.
      Be sure that Nvidia will have some other feature that will one up AMD too, and likely an upgraded DLSS too.
      $599 is really the absolute upper end of where a mid range card that doesn't even match their own previous generation cards, let alone Nvidia's ones, can be priced at.
      Realistically it's gotta be a $549 card to be a middling experience, and $499 to be a good product.

    1. I dont believe AMD numbers anymore. Whatever they're saying will need to be tested and validated, and revised 10 or 20% BELOW their numbers.
    2. They will be greedy, and mid range now is 4070S approx 600US. Their 8800XT will be priced 600US. No way they price it lower.
    3. Even if they fix RT, which quite honesly isn't a real problem as only very high end can run RT properly (4070Ti and above), the CUDA problem remains. Rocm needs to be seamless as CUDA is right now when working on AI stuff.
    To put the above points in one sentence, here's what AMD will do:
    1. They will believe their own numbers, 2. price the card accordingly, and 3. forget they're not offering the same quality overall as their competitor. And they'll fail.

    • @FireCestina1200

      Seems to forget something. RT isn't broken. Upscaller isn't an issue, the old one does. Performance isn't an issue. Game spitting on AMD does. PT performance of AMD is terrible. RT is sweet. But only when you're in the mid range. At a higher range all Nvidia cards are better. You can and I can simply do a raster test to see that my 7800XT (Qick 319) explode the world record of 4070 while running at near stock core clock, and also beat 4070super avg (Note than in France, 4070 is ±600€. 4070ti super is near 1000€). I run a RT test (Port Royal, Solar Bay) and still beat the 4070 (not the OC/world record tho. I run a PT test. And even the 4070 beat the 7900GRE. While running DLSS and XeSS tests, all tests are the latest. The FSR test however is in 2.0. Do you know how old FSR2.0 is ? Same for 2.1.
      The greatest issue with AMD card and CPU is based settings.

      For CPU. 9700X actually outperforms the 7800X3D (with a bit of tuning and being 100% stable). However it does consume more power. But hey. When the i9-14900K everyone was saying it's better even if it consumes more power so we won't brag about more power ?
      So yeah. The biggest issue is that almost every card and CPU are massively below what they can do. Sometimes it's the game. Sometimes it's windows, Windows was always known to favorite Intel. Just need to compare pure theorical performance between nanometers size of transistors, L1/L2/L3 size. Latency. Threads. And core speed. To see that AMD should beat Intel even more. Windows update boosts Ryzen performance by sometimes over 50% 🤨

    I think the whole focus on the mid tier claim is not a big as ppl may think. What would change with the RX 7900 XTX vs RTX4080 we have now?
    AMD already left the top tier (vs 4090) and can't compete vs the RTX4080 in RT gaming.
    BUT, this does not say the RX 7900XTX is a bad card as it shows nice performance in non RT gaming.
    So if the RT8800 XT(X) wil be on the same level so that it can still compete with a RTX5080 for gamers that don't care about the RT, then it will be similar to the current gen.
    And that would be good for the RTX5080 pricing.

    The 8700XT will have 12GB GDDR6 VRAM on 192bit bus, feature the exact same shader, texture, ROP and RT core count as the RX 7700XT with only a tiny bump in game clockspeed. RT performance will be identical to the RX 7700XT card and zero other improvements. The 8700, 8600XT and 8500 cards will be identical to their previous gen counterparts and at the same prices.

    A lot of this comes down to FSR vs DLSS. New games are leaning heavily on these features, to the point where they're on by default and can represent over 50% of the fps. Currently FSR is not as good as DLSS, which is a huge drawback for AMD.

    • @Torso6131
      @Torso6131 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, as a 6700XT owner this is easily the biggest drawback on AMD cards. It almost feels like it's been getting worse too, but I wouldn't recommend anyone use FSR below like, 1440p quality settings or 4k balanced (maybe 4k performance if you're playing on a TV).
      Path tracing is the future but I don't think it should be the focus right now. Getting a better upscaler, even if it's locked to new hardware, should be a huge priority. If it's any indication, the PS5 Pro's RDNA 4 GPU should be pretty good at not-path traced RT at least.

      @PropaneWP 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Torso6131 Yeah, I'm not sure if AMD will put a lot of effort in the discrete GPU market. They are dominating consoles and handhelds, so it makes sense developing for those markets. I think they'll also be very invested in competing on AI tech. They don't have as much money to throw around as Nvidia either.

    AMD is presenting an extremely sound business strategy. How many people drive Porsche bs Subaru? How about Corvettes or Mustangs vs Lamborghini? It’s about dominating a segment. Grab share, carve out a price to performance market niche.

    • @peterkolesar4020
      @peterkolesar4020 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Right the opposite, extremely bad strategy. Why do most people want iPhones? Because those scream style, power and performance eventhough it's not completely true. If Apple made a 300-400$ phone I can guarantee you it would outsell competition even if it was factualy inferior. It's the same here. Nvidia has the gaming top dog - currently the 4090. That one is the best and people want a piece of the best even if AMD will offer a better deal in lower segments, they won't offer part of the best...

    9:38 No BS there. Having the console market doesn't necessarily mean things are optimized for AMD. Quite frankly, the impact of DirectX, Vulkan and Windows is not to be underestimated. The same game will require a decently different approach to implementing on PC with AMD GPU vs Consoles. Both consoles SDK and DevKit are creating a sizable difference in approach for GameDev. And it's not quite the obvious stuff. So yes, it helps, but it is a different experience.
    I think people ignore that part quite a lot and assume "AMD Console = they have the gaming segment to themselves" followed by "why can't AMD product perform better on PC; they have the consoles?!".
    In short, AMD needs to be better AND have more focus on helping developers using their hardware and SDK on PC. That's what he is talking about. It does make sense.
    PS. Okay, it's late and I may not be making much sense. Caring on.

    imho, the problem that most I got with AMD GPUs is that the lack of support for creator software, if they at least try more and give more tools for the creators i.e. faster Blender Cycles render, or better Vulkan compute for creative tools that need GPU acceleration (which Nvidia has been doing for decades), im sure a lot of people will shift to it, since many be able to rely not only on gaming but a also capable content creation gpu that fits the budget. After experiencing intel arc on how fast it is than AMD when it comes to creative softwares when it's utilized right, I can't really go on AMD and use it. I'm looking forward to Battlemage because of it. and I hope AMD will give tools to creators also, because if AMD will give tools to creators, it will sell like hot cakes, because lets face it, PC GPUs arent only for gaming anymore, it can be use for content creation if needed, and AMD is not doing well on that part of the market (I mean how can you even make a game if the tools arent there for the GPU right?)

    Probably going Nvidia again. The optimizations are simply there. I'm sick of updating driver and now my game has stutters or some shadow bug. Smaller devs just simply don't account for AMD and that's where in my opinion, the fun PC games are. I really like the Adrenaline suite and all, but i'm fine with just using afterburner if it all works smoother when loading something up.
    I am just sick of having to counter tinker to get a AA game to work as intended.

    Thank you for the very interesting opinion piece Danny. Those fraudulent "bold claims" AMD made about RDNA3 is one of the reasons I turned to Nvidia and brought a RTX 4090. I was an Radeon fan up till then, very impressed with Ryzen, so I was disappointed and angry when the facts finally came to light. At least Nvidia hadn't lied about the 4090's capabilities. So, when I added up the points, and considering I'm not young anymore, I gritted my teeth and paid the extra. Then they went up in price! 😅
    AMD might be doing a rear guard action against Intel who, by the way, haven't felt the need to make an enthusiast level gfx card... yet. I believe AMD want to focus all their energy on a single processor complex, like with their CPUs, that they can segment with yeild. I actually think they could (and should) get close to the RTX 4080S for $500. They'll need AI implementation like Intel's XeSS and 12-16GB vram though too.

    It's not really surprising. AMD is giving up on graphics because the gaming market is horrible right now, and they see tons of money being made in AI, so they are shifting their attention to that. This however, is a big mistake. The AI boom is coming to an end, and most of the demand was coming from investors and enterprise, but not consumers, and its drying up. It will die down in the next couple years, and AMD will have missed the boat entirely. They should looking for the next boat, not chasing the one they just missed.

    40 series are a joke relying on AI frame generation to inflate price, so of course it wouldn't be difficult to beat it. The fact AMD has given up on chasing 4090, 5090 etc on the high end market 4K is proof AMD also can't and will never match up. For real gamers resolution matters.

    well reasoned and laid out. but you perspective is gaming-centic, which isn't a bad thing, but it's a thing. to me the question is: what's more important, the future of the company or a single gen of gpu's? in any business, if you're in a minority market share situation (to either Nvidia or Intel) and you have a new technology that groundbreaking for both sides of your business. and this technology has a profit margin you have only dreamed of before (MI300's). but you're fiscally limited with a far smaller market cap so you have to pick your fights. the conclusion is clear that you're going to spend what it takes to make a product that has more profit per unit than a case of gaming gpu's and get back to the high end after you bank your profits and can literally capitalize.
