- It can feel incredibly overwhelming and confusing, trying to start your own business. I've owned cafes and consulting businesses, but photography is a completely different world. In this video I talk about how the last 18 months has informed me, and what I would do differently if I was starting over.
Thanks for watching!

Another tip on gear - if you can, rent or borrow. Don’t buy until you know what hole it fills, what limitation you have with current gear. I’ve rented things I thought I wanted to buy, only to discover it wasn’t the right fit. Saved a lot of money!
Network with local photographers! Make friends. It will take you so much further.
Yes!! So funny, I actually edited out my point about connecting with other creatives because the video was feeling long, and I decided that was worth its own video! Glad to hear you think so too, video coming!
0:19 it’s not about being nice. It’s because you have ideas and a soothing voice/face.
🥺🥺🥺
I saw a couple of your videos and assumed you had thousands of subscribers based on the quality of your work.
Wow, thank you! That’s really kind. That is for sure the goal!! 🙏🏼
thanks for the tips man you got a real likable vibe in your vids
I appreciate that! Thanks for the support!
I am totally new so your video came at the right time, thank you Chris
Thank you for watching! Hope you subscribe and follow along in the future ☺️
@@Christellezphoto before this video I was already subscribed 🎉
Good points. I would say the biggest challenge in going full time is saving enough to cover off the slow seasons and potentially having a black hole in work as this does happen. Thank you for the video 🫡
That’s so so so important!! Absolutely spot on
Yes Chris, I watched the video (good one by the way) because I follow the channel and not because I want to become a worldwide famous alligator and iguana photographer, I gave up on that years ago😂. Be well, stay safe and have a great weekend.
Great video, Chris - ty! Any advice on a 'starter' camera? Reliable makes / price range etc? Thanks bro.
Thanks so much! I actually made a video about that a while ago that might be helpful!
BUDGET CAMERA OPTIONS: $500, $1000 + $2000

But it depends on your budget and what you want to shoot?
@@Christellezphoto I think for now I'm trying to bring out a hobby from the passion itself. Don't wanna rush in with a $2000 piece of kit when it turns out it's not for me. I'll probably start in the 500-1000 range for sure.
Such an interesting price range because you can literally get a flagship camera from 10 years ago for that price, which will produce stunning work, you just have to get past the idea of having to be on a mirrorless, which can be a hang up for some people. But the way I see it, I don’t think you are going to get a great mirrorless camera for that price, so you are better off with a top of the line camera that’s older. So if you are talking about $1000 USD with a solid lens, I would look at the 5Diii from Canon, or the D800 from Nikon, and whatever focal length you like, sticking to the f/1.8 line up for primes, and you’d have some awesome gear to dive into :)
OR the Canon 6D
@@Christellezphoto Awesome dude - thank you so much. Lately I've felt more desire to move off the corporate ladder and finally try to be a creative. Your channel has helped inspire that. Ty.
first :)
My Friend! Always with the support! So appreciate you!
If I had your face and with my mediocre talent I could begin to call myself a photographer! I'm an Ontario dude living in an oil town in Texas North (Alberta) choking on forest fire smoke in the summer and freezing my batteries in winter looking for portrait work that doesn't feature muddy work boots and a yellow hard hat and a dusty mud-encrusted pickup and that's just the ladies! Guys have a gun rack in the back window of their 4x4 diesel is the only difference.
I would absolutely love to see a portrait series of workers up there 👆
