When I was in Canada as a teenager, a friend of mine had a YC 45D and I used to play it all the time. It was black on black, like your picture from Australia.
Absolutely brilliant review/demo, thank you! Awesome tunes you play there too :) I stumbled over a YC-45D for sale online a few days ago and started to research this thing, but didn't find too many good videos or sound demos of it. Anyways, I suddenly got a chance to buy it, but had to decide today and thought it wise to have another search first - and there it was, this perfect video of yours - published yesterday? What timing! Definately helped in knowing it was the right choise for me to make the deal, so thank you very much indeed. I also intend to explore my old guitar pedals with this beauty, cant wait for it to arrive, it's gonna be amazing :)
Great video! I have a vintage YC 25D that I bought new back in 1977. It still plays great and the sound is great. Have the bass pedals and its built like a tank. Very underrated organs that compete well against the Vox and Farfisa organs!
Thank you SO MUCH! I purchased a YC45-D several years ago with some electronic issues, but this helps me troubleshoot in order to determine what is/isn't working.
3:33 On mine, I was able to confirm what that Yamaha literature points out: "Each lever slides from off to full with three easy-to-remember click-stops along the way, but each has continuous control for an infinite variety of possible tonal shadings."
60s tranny organs sound sublime. 1977 was an odd time to decide to discontinue this, just when the New Wave was at its peak. Sales would have jumped x100 at any moment, and Yamaha would have had to scramble to keep up with the demand. Whatever cigar-chomping CEO was in charge then wasn't very hip, was he.
Unique sounds. Chick Corea had these sounds all over the Romantic Warrior album. It was almost more of a poly synth than an organ. He really didn't use the typical organ sound much. I'd love to find one.
I listened to this album and spotted the YC-30 on track 1 Medieval Overture and track 5 the magician. Cool. Never heard of it before. Thanks for the tip.
thanks for this! you have videos on both my dream boards, the yc30 and the prophet 5. i’ll be going back and forth between the videos while i save up for one or the other lol.
The reference to the SK50D and the bass pedals. YC series used the BP-1 pedals. SK50D used the BP-2 pedals, which had a different pin out, but the connector was not compatible. I didn't find any info on whether later YC's used BP-2. I was looking around for BP-2 pedals for years for my SK50D, and considered looking for the BP-1 pedals until I found what the difference was. If you haven't, come visit my radlers channel for the SK50D demos. Overdue for newer ones.
Hi Rob, thanks for the info. Last I checked, the connectors can be used, but the PIN assignment has to be changed. But if that doesn't work either, that's good to know. In the meantime I also have a SK50D, of course also without pedal ;-) Otherwise I could have checked it.
I own the YC-45D with black top as shown in the video. I bought it brand new some time mid seventies. I lived in Newcastle Australia at the time. I used to lift this thing on my own. It is no longer working and since I am no longer strong enugh to move it I don't see the point in trying to repair it even though I own the full Yamaha service manual. It is big, heavy and doesn't sound that great by comparison with my more modern instruments.
This is a great demonstration. Thank you! I just bought one of these, but can’t figure out the stand. Any chance you can share how the stand is put together? The two top cross beams seam like they should nest together but on mine they are exact same size so don’t fit together. Maybe missing a connector part? Thanks!
does anyone knows where i can get the yamaha yc45d portamento spring replacement?? or get the specs to make one?, i have a 45d with no portamento, and the one who "fixed it" throw the spring to the trash can that was aleready very rusty and broken.
If anyone's curious, here are the 1972 brand new prices adjusted for inflation and converted to Euro. YC-30: 3990 DM (72) = 8,026.40 € (2023) YC-45D: 6770 DM (72) = 13,618.73 € (2023)
hey i just managed to get a YC30 but it's old and dusty. however it does turn on and looks functionable but i dont have a clue what audio cable the Audio Output needs can anyone help me out?
I'm afraid that all old electronic organs need a lot of maintenance. To get the deep sounds, old dryed out elco's need to be replaced. A good amplifier is also needed. I have 3 45Ds and a RA100 and RA200. I don't think it sounded poor when new ;)

Great to know. I have never seen one in black. Only the YC-30
I have a 45d and feel incredibly lucky! It is like the CS80’s near cousin
Yes, true. an inbuild SY-1 would be the icing on the cake ;-)

They are rare beasts- congratulations on your find!
You're welcome. I´m happy for your new purchase! You will have a lot of fun with it!
The color coding of the levers was the same color coding as used on Wurlitzer Theater Organs for the stop tabs.
Good to know. Thanks. I never played a Wurlitzer theater organ. Only the piano

Thanks SonicXTC! Yes, i´,m still a great fan of my YC
What an amazing instrument really. I own a YC-20, YC-30 and a Farfisa VIP 500. I’ve been looking for a 45D in Canada for years, no luck yet!
In Germany, they are actually offered quite frequently on the second-hand market . I wish you luck for Canada!

That´s really kind of you! I´m working on it. I released today a new one. Spread the word and share the link ;-)

you may right! but in the end 70´s a lot of new wave bands played a YC, cause it was cheaper 2nd hand than a synthesizer ;-)

You probably don't need to save as long for the YC-30 as you do for the Prophet 5 ;-)
@@knobsswitches lol very true!
An important tip - the volume pedal uses an old style incandescent light bulb- so if you have no volume- make sure that light is working!
Great. Thanks for the Tip!
???
A bandmate of mine used to play a 45D through a 760 Leslie in the 70s. A transport nightmare, but sometimes sounding pretty close to a Hammond.
yes, but the later SK-30 and SK-50D are much better for a Hammond Tone

Hey! During the jam, you press the auto-wah and a sublime mellotron-like melody started. Where did It come from?
Great video!
could you give me the time signature?
Yes, at 50:10

Yamaha did indeed make the -45D in black and also in red!
Wow. Thanks for the info. I saw a second picture of a black one, so I thought it must be official but never in red! Great to know.
My YC30 also has that static or hum noise on the Attack 2 2/3 only not on the other drawbars. Do you know why? have you fixed yours?
sorry. unfortunately not. i sold mine because i bought a Cordovox-0652 for one of the next Reviews. But i kept the 45D!

An ordinary 6,3mm audio cable should work. The output is underneath the organ

How is with parts/servicing for YC45D?
unfortunately I can't say anything about it. So far I have not needed a part for the YC45D (fingers crossed)

You have to check craiglist, eBay, reverb, etc… it’s only possible second hand
I have yc20.
I think the YC’s are cool no matter which model;-)
