I had a YC-30 in 1975-1976, on Long Island. I often wonder if it's still out there. I just got a Reface YC with a YC-45D modeled. I'm checking to see how close it sounds.
I was always intrigued by the percussive organ on Talking Heads' 'Take Me To The River'. I've tried Hammonds and Farfisas but could never get it right. I hear it's one of these
Hey Erik, I know I am a little bit late leaving a comment, but your video is one of the reasons I am searching for instrument's sounds on the internet. Well explained and brillantly played - you know what you are doing, and I really love it. Being a drummer for almost 40 years, ten years ago I discovered my passion for vintage organs and synths I always liked. I grew up in a family with a piano, so I figured out the keys for more than 30 years but, frankly said, I am a modest player on the keys. WTF ! Few years ago I found a white (!) YC 30 up for grabs, and you inspired me doing more on this instrument... Thank you so much for this ! Best regards from Germany, Martin
that's amazing , Martin... thanks for writing.. and good luck with that white YC30! I hope you've had a lot of fun with it over these past years. cheers my friend! E
Thank you so much for this video.. i bought one of this beauties 7 years ago. and until this vid there were no reviews of it. Sounds great! cheers from Uruguay.
Thanks for this great demo of these two awesome instruments! Yesterday I was in a $2 shop with a good sound system and all was quiet except for Steely Dan's "Do It Again", with its high-flying sitar and organ solos. Searching, I found these were by Denny Dias and Donald Fagen on YC-30.
I owned one from 99-2008 and sold it when it started getting unreliable. I recently bought another one and am thrilled to have it again. I missed it, it's my favorite combo organ.
Nice! I have it’s big brother...the YC45-D and love it! I wish someone would make a VST or patch that could duplicate the Marimba sound. I found someone who sampled it but it only works on newer Korg boards.
I thought I knew this thing, until I saw this video. Mind = BLOWN! I love the farfisa because I mean..... it's a farfisa but this?!? This is the Cadillac of combo organs
I love these YC series organs. Would love a 25D. I'm sure the Nord Electros work great but they look so uncool and the digital drawbar thing looks suck-ey. Nice demo, thanks.
hey Kim, yes... i agree... the nords are lame, but they're so functional that it's hard to not use them sometimes! The Yamahas are amazing... i have a 25D too... thanks for checking out the video! best, Erik
In its own way, it actually tributes the Lowery horseshoe models at the same time as the different Hammond, Vox and Farfisa models. Watching this demo, I wouldn't be surprised if I found out that this was the organ model used by the keyboardist accompanying the 1979 Cliff Richard song "We Don't Talk Anymore." The way you demonstrated the ribbon controller has got me wondering about that. The combo organ, theater organ, synthesizer, Theremin and Ondes Martinot amalgamate here. How could a mouse get through the 1/4 inch hole?
yo buddy. thanks for checking in. I honestly use my old Nord electro 2 a lot... and my mellotron is an amazing fly-in keyboard as well with some great organ sounds... but I don't have an absolute digital fave. let's talk more about what you're looking for--happy to help!
Erik Deutsch thanks. I use an ace tone on most shows. I just can’t get any of the digital versions to come even close to the sound, it’s a big part of the bands sound or it wouldn’t be so important.... arg
Such a great video, watched it many many times, love the sound of these old combo organs. Just digging into 'Baboon Strength' - wonderful album, were all the keys played on the YC30?
thanks man, appreciate you checking it out! and glad you're digging 'baboon strength'... all the organ Is yc30, there's also some Moog source and Arp Omni 2 (actually the other 2 demo videos I've got online...) I think that's all the keys I played, if I recall correctly. I'll check it out and get back to ya if I hear something else! salad! e
@@ErikDeutschkeys Thanks for the reply! I listened again, wow you get some lovely sounds on 'A Song for Karen Carpenter'! The YC is really versatile on that album, at times I could have sworn it was a Hammond. I guess a little bit of Moog and Arp never hurt anybody either ;-) Don't suppose you have any solo YC-30 albums? That I would love to hear.
hey nelson! the yc45 is extremely rare but the 30s are out there... I think you can find one if you look around on reverb.com and other online resale musical instrument forums... it might take time but I bet one will pop up! good luck!
Amazing organ! I really love the album "Baboon Strength". I always wondered what was making that theremin-style slide sound on "Astronaut Love Triangle". I didn't know the organ had a portamento strip. Great video.
Thanks for checking out the video, man... and glad you're a fan of "Baboon Strength'. Tony Mason and I are most definitely proud of that album and how well it's help up over the last 10 years. Stay in touch and all the best, Erik
Hi Erik, I have a Yamaha Yc 30 in its own case in excellent working condition. Are you interested in it, or do you know someone that would be? I have to sell quickly. Please pm me. Ty.
I sold Yamaha organs in the late 70s and 80s. People would always ask, can you make it sound like a Hammond??? I would tell them if you want it to sound like a Hammond, then go buy a Hammond. I have a YC45D and a EX-42 in my living room and I run the YC45D through the R60B cabinets from the EX-42 and/or the Yamaha RA200
Whoever designed this went nuts. 6 sets of drawbars. + bass and portamento I love it so much
Holy Steely Dan tone à la “Do It Again “.
Donald Fagen probably discovered this instrument in the recording studio and quickly became a master on it.
This is an excellent demo, thanks Erik!

such a great track! I didn't know that but I'm not surprised... thanks for the input! :)
@@ErikDeutschkeys Donald Fagen used the Portamento strip!
Aparrently, that organ was also used on the Osmonds' "Crazy Horses"!
Beautiful sounds!
thank u my friend!

That ribbon bar + bass = kitaro/vangelis

Seems Steely Dan (Donald Fagen) used the YC-30 in the solo of "do it again".
And also Donny Osmond, for the Osmonds' Crazy Horses!

no they couldnt! the thing was totaled!

this was really good.
yo Erik check out George Duke "North Beach" from 1974

That ribbon controller, the sound of Steve Austin leaping onto a roof😂
Cool sound and great playing too. Thanks for the video!
