RAF FIGHTER PILOT DEMONSTRATES MOST RAPID TYPHOON DISPLAY AND PASSES PILOT PDA • RAF CONINGSBY

- On the 20th May 2024, AVM Flewin, Air Officer Commanding No 1 Group, RAF, flew in personally to RAF Coningsby in an Augusta109 to watch Turbo's display, to review the work-up and if content, will grant Turbo the Display Pilot PDA, which means that Turbo can then demonstrate the his outstanding performance of "Moggy" Typhoon in front of crowds of hundreds of thousands of people during the summer display season. We are pleased to announce that Turbo was awarded Flt Lt Turnbull his Public Display Approval for THIS display!
This display from Turbo was the most challenging to film. It was more rapid that we have ever seen!
The Royal Air Force made history on the 22nd April 2024 by revealing their new Typhoon display livery for 2024. It has been 3 years since the last livery was produced, with the all famous and much loved ‘Blackjack’, which flew the Union Flag Livery.
As it is the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy this year, the theme to the Typhoon’s livery was given this honour. The new livery is painted in the Hawker Typhoon scheme with 257 Squadron markings which includes the squadron markings which was FM, Camo and D-Day (or invasion) Stripes.
The black and white stripes are what are known as D-Day or Invasion stripes. These stripes were to help identify friendly aircraft from enemy aircraft. The yellow slats on the leading edges of the wings also played a similar purpose to help identify allied aircraft. D-Day was a joint operation and with many countries such as Canadian, American and British involved, being hit by enemy fire would be a risk, so the D-Day stripes would help identity friendly aircraft. Though one thing to point out is that Hawker Typhoon had the black and white stripes before D-Day to not get mistaken for the Bf 109’s.
On D-Day, the specific markings FM-G, the Hawker Typhoon aircraft was flown by Pilot Officer Denzel Jenkins. The Typhoon serial is ZJ913.
This year’s RAF Typhoon Display pilot is Flt Lt David ‘Turbo’ Turnbull. We normally expect to hear callsign ANARCHY1 when it comes to the RAF Typhoon display pilot, however, this year, the display pilot's callsign is "TURBO"! Well, if there was a callsign available that had your nickname, you’d surely take it. The callsign is actually from RAF LOSSIEMOUTH’S 6 Squadron and Turbo has borrowed it from them for the year which mean 6 Squadron are without this callsign.
Flight Lieutenant David "Turbo" Turnbull is this year's RAF Typhoon Display pilot and he has already produced a particular sequence that will wow the crowds. The slow aileron roll into the max alpha is a signature manoeuvre from Turbo! He is becoming one of the best Typhoon display pilots of all time. With a hard deck of 100ft, let's ride!
We normally expect to hear callsign ANARCHY1 when it comes to the RAF Typhoon display pilot, however, this year, the display pilot's callsign is "TURBO"! Our display pilots nickname is 'Turbo' but is it not Anarchy1? We knew that this year was going to be different and TURBO is the new callsign for the display pilot, which has been borrowed from Lossiemouth's 6 Squadron.
This year's 2024 Typhoon Display Pilot, David "TURBO" Turnbull will be doing his first set of 10 practice displays at 1,500ft and then will lower it to 500ft hard deck before being allowed to smack it right down to 100ft. Once you hear callsign TURBO1, there will be excitement. However, Turbo will also be carrying out practice displays around the country, this is to prepare him and get used to performing displays away from the home base, which is what airshow season is all about. Before Turbo will be allowed to display at airshows, he will need to achieve and obtain his PDA (Public Display Authority). Without this insurance, he will not be able to display at airshows and venues. The other responsibility is once a pilot obtains a PDA, they cannot go more than 10 days with some sort of display, whether practice or real world at air shows. Failing this would result in having to re-apply for a PDA.

Ladies, gents and teddy bears. This year’s top RAF pilot is “TURBO”. He is truly fearless and will wow the crowds this year. Isn’t the “Leaping Salmon” one of the best manoeuvres you’ve seen? We cannot wait to see Turbo at Airshows this year. He does us all proud
LOVE your emojis !!!
This was a very beautiful display. I watched a video of the French Rafale display at Duxford and was seriously impressed, so much so that I was hoping that Turbo would match it. He has done us proud in every sense, and so has the cameraman! Many thanks.
Thank you very much
Excellent video, Congratulations to you and the superb display by man and machine!
Love the WWII paint scheme…looks like a proper RAF fighter aircraft
D day markings to let ground troops during invasion know the planes overhead were friendly
Brilliant camera work there considering the speed of the aircraft. You never missed a shot and always in focus. Well done my friend. I pop in now and again & always admire you and Ted's dedication in all types of weather...so good! thanks...Al
Thank you very much
From the roar of the engines, to the first few astonishing aerial acrobatics, I immediately found this to be an enthralling video. I had to find out more about this pilot. Fortunately, there is a Forces News video of the Flight Lieutenant himself. And it did not disappoint. Movies such as Top Gun and the one with Will Smith as a buff, cigar-chomping "fighter ace" show what a massive gulf there is between the real thing, and what Hollywood likes to imagine is a supremely-skilled pilot.
It was heartening to see that the pilot who can put on an aerial display that is so extreme as to be almost physics-defying CGI, is an unassuming quietly-spoken young man.
(And to add to the gratitude in the comments, thanks Nico/Ted Coningsby for the excellent camera work. Superb video of a special talent. Much appreciated 👍👍👍👍👍)
Oii oiii John, thank you so much for your message. You only have to look at our channel to see how the leagues are apart. In fact, check out some of interaction with crew and pilots on our channel.
You see, there is a saying “just like the movies” but in reality, film makers say “just like the real thing”. 😎
Brilliant pilot ... Sublime display ... Excellent filming ...
Put them together and it's perfection ❤
An example of top drawer aviation coverage for every #Avgeek

Oii Oii Dex thank you so much 🤙🏼
Ted and Nikos one word for that display “SPECTACULAR “. David Turbo Turnbull sir you deserve my new medal the DFDM= distinguished flying display medal. If there’s not one already Nikos I think you should make one as big as a dustbin lid and present it to Turbo on our behalf. The RAF should be so proud of that great pilot.
We actually do have our very own awards which YOU can vote for! What is it? It is the Ted Coningsby Display Awards. At airshows WE feature, you can vote for your favourite display. We are the only fan based award system for airshows and first of its kind.
Oi Oi, I think you should be the official airshow videographer this year.
Thank you very much 🩵🤙🏼
Thank you for this amazing video
Oii Oii thank you very much

Miss having jets at Leuchars so much. That display was fabulous
Best wishes Flt Lt Turnbull, "Superbo", go get 'em! ❤ Ted, expertly captured.
Thanks Margo
Magnificent. Thank you for sharing this excellent performance. Pitch perfect livery as well for the 80th anniversary. Cheers Team Ted
Oii Oii thank you
Great video and loving the livery...Amazing 💯
Ooohh yeah
Great display by a great pilot, captured brilliantly by a great cameraman! Go Turbo!
Oii oiii thanks Ellesee
That was as expected brilliantly executed Ted, both by the Pilot FL LT Turnbull and yourself 👍🏻👍🏻
5:21 love those high speed barrel rolls this year 🔥
Fantastic to see Turbo as the display pilot, I had the honor of working with him when he was a JP on II Sqn. He lived upto the name Turbo on one of his first flights by going just a little bit too quickly and triggering an overspeed warning.
"Turbo the Superbo"! Another fine RAF display pilot "raising the bar" for the display season. Flt Lt Turnbull, the PDA, you flew through it (pardon the pun!). Absolutely fantastic! I've given you a higher score tho' to 110.5 for Artistic Impression 😜! That Leaping Salmon into Max Alpha, well, that just melts the butter! Phenomenal!! Air shows, prepare for this because this fine pilot & Moggy will blow the socks off everyone!! ❤
Oii oiii Margo, we are looking at the greatest season of all time 🤙🏼
Those “G,s” must be to the absolute limit!

Oooohhh yeah
Absolutely Glorious 👍
A forgone conclusion I would have thought. Brilliant. Did you see the French Raffelle pilots display at Duxford? His was some display also. Thanks for the video. All the best. Mick

Ooohhh yeah thanks Sie
MIRAMAR TOP GUN SCHOOL in the U.S would be proud of that performance! Congrats TURBO!

VELOCITY VECTOR ROLLS RULE !!
😉
BEST WISHES
Thanks Callum
Wonderful! What a sight to behold
❤❤❤Well done Turbo brilliant we are still the best in the world . RAF ❤❤
Brilliant but I think he's done that negative G move better in previous takes, especially when upside down gaining altitude. Looked like he opted out of that one this time.
I stayed there holliday park just around the corner from there in late May and they were flying off well into the night great display.Didnt get much sleep though but cool.
Even a raising of the Airbrake to acknowledge that he knew he'd nailed that one. TURBO dictates and Moggy moves to his tune. Turbo will be the known from here as the byword for a perfect display. Ten for Turbo.
Its gonna take some eclipsing that display right there. Turbo challenging himself and other display pilots! Gauntlet laid down! Try if you dare? Cooller than a chiller! See him at RIAT in his next thriller!! Ohhh yeahhhh..
The ceiling is surely smashed? Incredible 😲 😮 😯
He’s is simply awesome
Another fantastic video. I can't wait to see Turbo live, probably at Fairford next month. Keep up the good work..
I ❤ EUFI 😊
TURBO WELL DONE!!!🔥♥️🇺🇸🔥♥️LETS RIDE!!!
Oiii ooiii Janis 🤙🏼 LET’S RIDE
That camouflage paint should be standard again set our lad's and lasses apart from the other's
The clouds remind me of the opening to The Simpson for some reason.
Gr8
For Mark.
😮
Was this the rolling display he did to gain the PDA?
Full send Oii Oii turbo
Send it
im very confused, i seen him at the english riveria show and his display was different from this?
There are 3 types of display; flat, rolling and FULL
@@TedConingsby it was a no cloud day at english riviera show so very confused
Viewing points make a difference. You were most liked on the crowd line, we were not. This can make the display look very different. Also, we haven’t seen the footage, but if the aircraft went tech, then it could have ended differently. Not all displays are full
@@TedConingsby ohhh that makes more sense
Oi oi Ted oi oi chats 🎉
Oi oi
Oii Oii
Oi oi!

Amazing maneuvers - what do you think the top speed in knots was during this routine?
Oii oiii Wes, we think at some points 450 knots
