How to Clean Roller Skate Bearings

Cleaning skate bearings is very simple, and it doesn't cost much to keep your bearings clean and increase the roll and longevity of your skates!

1. Remove the bearings from the wheels. We use the awesome Bankroll Bearing Snatcher (www.devaskatio...) to make this super easy.
2. Use this moment to check your wheels. Watch our video on How to Clean Roller Skate Wheels ( • How to Clean Roller Sk... ) if they need a good cleaning too.
3. Place bearings in bearing cleaning unit (a glass jar or plastic jug will do in a pinch).
4. Place enough bearing cleaner into the jug so all bearings are submerged in the chemical.
5. Let the bearings sit overnight. This will allow all the dirt and grime inside the bearings to break down.
6. The next morning, make sure the lid is secured and shake it up for a few minutes to really get all the dirt out.
7. Drain all the dirty chemicals from the jug - replace with a new amount of chemical to cover the bearings as done previously.
8. Let sit for several minutes and then shake again for another few minutes.
9. Repeat this process several times until your solvent remains mostly clear. This will let you know that the bearings are well cleaned.
10. Drain a final time and place the bearings on a towel or cloth to wipe down and dry.
11. A great extra step is to BLOW the bearings out with an Air Compressor if you have one - this really gets them completely cleaned!
12. When the bearings are dry, place a drop or two of some good bearing oil on the bearings and let them sit for a few minutes.
13. Take the bearing in your fingers and spin each one to get the oil evenly distributed to each of the ball-bearings inside.
14. The final step is to reinstall the bearings onto your wheel axles. Be sure to take extra care to avoid damaging the race of the bearing when reinstalling into the wheels.
15. Put your (hopefully now clean) wheels back on your skates!
