One common mistake in TH-cam videos. Never ending background music that make it so much more difficult to hear and focus on what you are saying. Please, please, please use music and sound effects for emphasis, but turn off the non-stop background music. It can be an accessibility issue. Thanks for considering this! I really enjoyed the video. 😊

Viv I love you, but “1 common thing that makes your video look cheap”: crazy wild reflections dancing around in your glasses 🙈 They’re so insane in this video I feel like they have their own eccentric personality! I wear glasses myself so I know how difficult that is, but maybe try to position the lights in such a way that they won’t be reflected into the camera, or use softboxes or diffusers. I think a polarization filter in front of your lens should also help to a degree and is a cheap and easy solution 🙌

Onboard with most of what you say but I don't mind canvas-wrapped fine art photo prints. I guess it depends on the image, size and where you hang it. Also, unmatched tableware with unique original pieces makes eating and drinking more fun. I have antique ceramic plates and they don't match. My visitors love learning about each piece. Genric matching kitchenware can be quite boring. Very conservative North American of you.

Every snack with its own character. Those boring sets from Ikea would make my brain and my taste buds switch off. Give me something that has been designed with love, treasured for decades, and finally passed to a vintage trader or charity shop to find a new life to bring happiness to.

If it’s in someone else’s home what’s it to you? And who the hell cares what this snob thinks makes your house look cheap. If she’s that caught up in material things & let’s someone else’s decorating style bother her, she needs therapy! I watch a lot of home interior shows and design shows. None have been as insulting as this very young girl. If people didn’t think the signs were nice and looked good in the home they wouldn’t make them or buy them. I just hang out originals from talented local artists, but I've got a framed poster from the Van Gogh's "Café Terrace at Night" which I bought at the MET, and I just love it. It makes me happy; those blues and yellows, all the sufferings of both Van Gogh brothers, the struggles, the poverty, and yet such an inspiring work of art. I look at it and I think I'll go to that place once this pandemic is all over.... Maybe, if a piece tells a story and speaks about your artistic preferences, it can have a chance -you may remove it momentarily when in-laws are visiting. But you are right about the Mona Lisa. My rule is: if it makes you happy, you can frame your son's school art and proudly show it to anyone who wants to look at it.

Because it's south/southwest France, I'm sure it's very popular at other times. You definitely need to go. It was kind of a spiritual experience for me where I just connected with the place. In (at?) When I go on holiday somewhere with good local crafts, I bring back a plate or a bowl. I have plates gifted to me by friends/family. There are so many places online that represent artists, where you can buy originals or prints - that it's a shame to be selecting art based on the color of your sofa, or a cheap mass produced print from a department store.

My cabinets are that '80's style. Quaker Made, very well constructed and very expensive. They were here when I bought the place 25 years ago. I was anxious to replace them but have learned to love them and so glad I didn't rip them out. The house is an 1980 build, designed and built by a contemporary architect for his own family. He knows better than I, so his design can stay.

I love canvas prints because they’re so matte and look very “deep” and rich, even compared to photo prints without glass! The only other option I also like are acrylic prints which have a high contrast and great popping colors but aren’t as deep due to their reflections. Normal photo prints behind glass are perfectly okay but fall pretty flat for me overall. BUT I don’t think there’s a format that works well for every photo! I’d choose canvas for black & white photos and photos with lots of dark areas, acrylic for photos with bright colors, and photo prints for “normal” photos.

    • @Kath-Erina

You could add a wood frame around the canvas to elevate the look of it. Kelsey from 'the sorry girls' here on TH-cam made one recently at the end of her last home-reno episode. It's fairly easy and looks just soooooo much better all you need is a miter box, hand saw, wood glue and some small nails

    • @Halbmond
      @Halbmond 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@Kath-Erina totally agree with you! I thought about artworks and other subjects. For example, I have a gallery wall of concert photography, and those work much better without frames imo. But family photos and portrait photography in general tend to look better framed. I think it’s because the focus is on a person, so the frame acts as a visual border that keeps the eyes locked in on what’s important. On the other hand, if it’s something like an open landscape, not having a frame allows the viewer to imagine the scene going beyond the canvas.

This is great advice for someone going for that look - which may not everyone. When you said these signs are for someone going for "cottage-y" or "farm-y", which is what some people are going for. I'm actually going for very warm, comforting and either "cabin-y" or industrial. I'm not going for "classy" - so I was instantly NOT offended (weird, huh?) I would love to see some advice for my style - warmer, deep and rich (darker colors - without using black). My home is simply decorated with things I like - which is all over the place so it winds up looking like no style. Thank you!

I totally agree with everything you said in this video. Those word signs are every were I can't stand them. Just wandering if you have any ideas for old panelling in a rental that you can't paint. Also what is your take on a nice chalkboard.

Floor-to-ceiling curtains, pair them with removable wallpaper, or use putty and really light photo frames to install a gallery wall.

Lol my parents vacation home had the 80s cabinets! They painted them and added modern hardware, the difference was night and day! Really no need to fully replace cabinets, upcyling is the green route! Plus it saves time money and headaches

I think that everyone should just what makes them happy. Everyone’s style is different, so do what makes you happy, do what makes you feel good in your home. And if anyone doesn’t like it, fuck em.

I agree with all these - but like you said, it's okay to break the rules if you feel strongly about something! I just moved into a new place and am not decorating it - curtains are my problem point so I'll be sure to check out your video on that!

I haven't done any of these EXCEPT for the mismatched dinnerware since I wanted to save money - thank goodness there is an affordable alternative. I will be buying that 18 piece dinnerware set from IKEA ASAP

I just found your channel. I agree with you in everything but the Starry Night Van Gogh. It is my favorite painting and it holds a lot of emotion for me from a young age. I even got to see it in person. The famous paintings tip was a bridge too far lol! Don’t come for my mass produced art. Lol! Love your channel.

Kind of disagree with the comment that cold lighting has "no place" in your home, I think it's important in the bathroom and the closet so you can see true colors. But totally agree it looks terrible in living spaces

Omg, I agree with all of this. Especially the art!! I only hang original, no print! You're right, too many talented artists in this world. I bought a beautiful 32×20 gorgeous original from Russia on an Etsy type app. 😍

I agree on mass-produced canvas prints and even canvas print portraits. But we have canvas prints of nature photography we've taken on various hikes and trips to historical locations. I love them because we have one for every place we've lived, and each one takes me to a special place/memory. And since they're landscapes, they wouldn't work as regular photo prints. If they look tacky, oh well, I'd rather be tacky and be reminded of those places every day. We have more traditional art too, of course.

Contact paper (removable) seems a good way to redo your kitchen cabinets if you’re a renter. There’s a zillion patterns nowadays. And I did the plate/cups thing. I did the same with my pots and pans, some were 40 years old!🙈 gave them all to my son for his first apartment. I got 4 plates, lipped, and 4 bowls. 8 glasses. A new set of inexpensive cookware (pioneer woman), I liked the color and they’re sturdy. Just that little thing made me less stressed in the kitchen.🤷‍♀️ and just like sheets, the less you have, the less dirty dishes sitting around lol
