    Things that have made me feel uncomfortable in other peoples home: any overpowering smell whether good or bad, hard uncomfortable seating or no seating, pets jumping all over me or laying on top of me while I’m trying to sit down or visit, extremely cold or hot temperatures, clutter all over the place especially in the areas where we are visiting or eating, dirty or dingy looking hand towels in a bathroom.

      Dirty cabinet fronts & baseboards.
      I can't tell you how often I've said; "oh thank you, but I ate already."
      And overhead lighting... it immediately tells me that there's a possibility that the person is
      blind to nuance, atmosphere & self awareness.
      That may sound snotty, but it's true.
      Are we doing surgery or eating?
      No faint music in the background during a dinner is right up there w/ overhead lighting.
      I mean, if you're looking for something it's understandable, but if you're just sitting around having a
      conversation it's awful.

      Even if the towels aren't actually dirty, but are damp, it turns me off. And while we're on the subject of bathrooms: Make sure the toilet paper isn't down to the last few squares. I hate having to go through someone's cupboards for a fresh roll or rummage around in my purse for a tissue.

    I think you have to be careful regarding scent. You do not want any bad odor such as litter boxes or stinky dogs. But it can be equally off-putting when you burn strongly scented candles or use "plug ins" in every room. The synthetic scents give me headaches. I was once in a home where they different scented candles in each room. I couldn't wait to leave the home. It also made me wonder, what are they trying to cover up?

      The guys who installed our new heating/cooling system commented that our house did not smell like dogs . 🙂 We had four dogs at the time & my routine was always to air the house daily , kept their bedding & them clean , etc. The conversation came about because a worker commented on my saddle , bridles & boots in the music room by the piano - we laughed about " country living " lifestyles ! 💟

    • @e.thereal
      @e.thereal ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You made my day with this comment Laura so thank you, totally agree. Many scents nowadays have unhealthy toxic substances in them. Synthetic smells like lemon usually bring metallic headaches and to be honest, scientist still cant explain how smell fully works but they know alot of our modern particles that are getting in there aint healthy but conglomerates do not care. Just like Yes Original suddenly became unpleasantly overwhelming a year agoish and the rest of my surroundings didn't notice anything it turned out they had changed the ingredients (ignoring the smaller testgroup that did not respond well to the scent since the majority didn't take any notice). Most candles are garbage nowadays, yes just like weave and other things (look it up) and those wallplugins should have been banned ages ago from an environmental perspective.

    • @dianeosgood6594
      @dianeosgood6594 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree. Whenever my family get something on the burner or pungent food is cooked, I insist on turning off heat/air and opening few windows for few minutes along with exhaust fan. I feel odors can lodge into the furniture. I dislike lots of plug ins or candles, one candle is okay on occasion. Fresh air is best. If there is something that smells, find it and clean it out of the room. Febreze gives me a huge headache and I really dislike my husband using it. If the weather is not freezing I will open the window.

We need to be mindful when we're using scents of any sort around the home if you have any kind of pet living with you. Even floor liquid cleaners and carpet cleaners can be too much for them. And cigarette smoke too! A friend's dog and cat vomited every time she cleaned her floor with Pine Sol. No wonder! Same thing each time she cleaned her carpets. One thing that’s frustrating about most design TH-camrs is assuming that everybody has a certain space. For example - not everyone even has an entry way. I don’t have a house. I live in an apartment. There is literally no entry way. You walk in and the living room is right there. It’s like if you don’t have a huge home, and you live in small apartments/studios, we often times do not know what to do with our spaces bc a lot of these design tips aren’t applicable to us. Even “decorating on a budget” is still too expensive for a lot of us.

    You nailed ALL my pet peeves! 💜Loathe cold floors (and cold countertops, too). Cannot tolerate perfumed/artificial smells (did you know how toxic these perfumes and chemicals are? Very.) No curtains (fishbowl feel). Overly minimalist feels like a museum, not relaxing at all and I get no sense of the person or how they live, which is a bummer as I like to get to know people better when I'm in their home (missed opportunity when they hide themselves overly IMHO). Same for too crowded, not relaxing at all. Harsh lighting, yes for sure. Great video.

    Re odors. Lots of ways to address without scents: WASH your curtains, couch upholstery, rugs. De-clog drains you don’t even think need to be dealend, put baking soda in your refrigerator. Wash your oven throw out old carpets, clothes, or anything else that has just accumulated your human smell too long. Wash your pets at least twice a month-ignore vets who say that isn’t necessary. It isn’t for their health. It is if you don’t want to smell like a vet. Wash dog leashes and collars. Cook with a window open. I do like the use of air fresheners,but particularly the clean linen fragrance. A small trick you can do before company: boil some water with your favourite air freshener or even cologne/perfume, or just a lot of lemon juice, and it will fill the air. Let it vent a few minutes before guests arrive. Similar to baking cookies.

    I have a lovely friend whose house is a little disheveled but inviting mostly. I couldn't put my finger on what was still making me feel uncomfortable. I realized there are lots and lots of rustic solid wood pieces and fixtures, which I like for quality's sake, but it makes everything feel hard and cold. My other friend's house makes you think they are still moving in. Nothing on the white walls, kids toys inside closed clear plastic totes on an industrial-looking shelf, perfectly separated, very clean technically, but the kitchen is always untidy, when I visit. It feels like a "just business" kind of environment, which can happen when you're trying to keep a house clean and minimal with 3 kids. I like to think I have a nice balance.

    We installed curtains in our home and it completely changed the feel and look, to the point where it felt like a different house, in a good way.
    We built our home with my mother and father in law and have bamboo, laminate and tiles and while the flooring may seem cold we do offer our guests slippers which helps to make our home more inviting.
    I recently updated our entry and it feels much more cosy and welcoming. We actually used an old piece of furniture we were going to donate but once we moved it into the entry on the way out of the house it became an entryway cabinet and it now looks really beautiful.

    What does too clean even mean? Clean is good. Dirty is gross. Sparse, plain, and minimal aren't the same as clean. Totally agree regarding guest room sheets (and for that matter, guest beds are usually substandard).

    Add a beautiful huge historic art print, such as one by the pre-Raphaelite painters to contrast with the minimalist decor. These paintings are rich in color and detail. Some of the scenes are homey, while others are romantic or historic moments. You will still have the benefits of minimalism, but you will add vivid color and unforgettable faces full of emotion or mystery.

    For me the most inviting is the general atmosphere of a home. It gives me a more intimate account of who these people really are, as individuals and/or a family or a community. I prefer cossines to strictness even if that means my kitchen doesn't look perfect when my best friends stop for quick coffee. On the other hand I love to decorate my home for special occasions, holidays and even just in general, redecorating. Different lighting options, colors, fabrics and pattern, rugs, plants and flowers... Bring it on! ^^ Combined with lots of natural light and a good airflow, all I need is some nice art , music and scents (candles, incense). If it's possible I'd prefer a good location and outside architecture but I think I appreciate a good space solution even better. As of most univiting mistakes people make in their homes I'd have to say are bad smell, clutter, garbage and mouldy bathroom hand towels. The mouldy hand towel is my limit :D Posh Pennies thank you for this video. Best of luck!

    There is actually a piece of furniture called a “hall stand” which is made as a drop zone but unless your house is traditional with antique furniture, it may not look right. Sferra is supposed to be one of the top companies for sheets. Their Giza 45 sheets are made from only the best Egyptian cotton but they are not cheap. There are light bulbs with a switch on the bulb that lets you change what the light looks like. You can get them at home depot. Then you don’t need smart phone apps, internet, etc.

    The worst ever bad smell is cat boxes. I have a cat and I’m obsessive about cleaning the box just because I can smell it on other peoples homes right away. Sometimes it’s pretty bad and it’s obvious owners can’t smell it anymore. Sometimes I can smell it on someone’s clothing or hair just because they live with them.
    Visiting with my husbands mom it’s so overwhelming I deep clean everything from my luggage as soon as I get home. I was like I swear the bedding smells like cat piss and we secretly rehashed everything but it was still there. Took me forever to figure out what the smell was since I never noticed a cat box anyplace.until last time.
    It’s in the laundry room. So apparently the smell gets into the wash and dryer and that was why the bedding smelled so so so unsleepable awful.
    Now I know to never ever keep my cat box in the laundry room or near an air vent.
