- Thailand to Laos!! This is the first time we visit Laos and super excited for this new adventure.
We took the train from Udon Thani to Nong Khai (if you are coming from Bangkok, you can also take the same train from Bangkok to Nong Khai) then we took a tuk tuk to the Thai immigration to check out of the country.
After that we have to cross the Thai Lao friendly bridge by bus to go to the Lao immigration and process to the visa on arrival.
We managed then to change lao kip currency in Laos after the immigration (you can also change in Thai border). We took then a final bus to the city center of Vientiane. You can then walk to your hotel or take another tuktuk ;)

Just got back myself. The Lao Noodle Soup and the Lao Sandwich. My Lao girlfriend wouldnt let me have the Noodle Soup because of the spice. The sandwich, peppers, pork, greens, and more peppers. Loved it. If you get around, you will see some huge private houses being built. Rivals to Disneyland. I was there for 10 days, still trying to wrap my head around it. I have a degree in history so I enjoyed the National Museum. Just being out around the people was the best thing of my trip. Everyone was so nice to this ferang.
When you guys travel back to Thailand, check your travels carefully. You won't have to pay for many steps.

Welcome to Laos. The papaya salad that you ate at Three Sisters is of Luang Prabang style (the papaya strips are larger). I hope you go next to Vang Vieng and then to Luang Prabang in Northern Laos by using the Lao-China train. Papaya salad is originally of Lao people living in Laos and Isan (Northeastern Thailand) before it spread to central Thailand several decades ago. You should also try Larb, Nam tok, and, Nam Khao (at Three Sisters). Hope you have a good time in Laos.

No,not true. Since papaya is not the local plant in South East Asia. It came from South American by the Portuguese who traded with Siam, Ayutthaya era. The Somtum was appearing for the first time at the period of King Rama 5 of Thailand,but that version is sweet and less spicy. After that it spreads to Esan and Lao with the very spicy version. The first esan version appeared just before the Vietnam war. It's nothing to do with Lao. You can do the research. It's never recorded in any history of Lao. It only came after Esan had it.
thai and lao use the same number system hen writing and saying, but 20 is slightly difference... in lao you say sao and in thai you say jee-sip, but @ 16:20, are spot on neng (one) seng (hundred) sip (ten thousand) pun, this is colloquial. even that 70 and 80, it perfect
when in lao, i typically eat local like xieng khouang foods.
