I Found A HUGE Mistake in this Stitch Crochet Kit | Review

- These past two weeks I reviewed a Disney Stitch Crochet Kit from Hobby Lobby. This is an amigurumi crochet kit sold in the needle art section at Hobby Lobby. I originally purchased this kit because I thought it would be something super cute to make for my nine year old daughter, Fiona. I also thought to myself, "Why not kill two birds with one stone?" and do a review for you on the quality of this kit. Then, I could tell ya if I would recommend it or not. I had no idea this Stitch Crochet Kit would take me down such a journey.
Two Sundays ago I thought it was a perfect time to relax, turn on the camera, and start working on this Stitch. I initially thought the packaging was nice, The crochet hook and materials looked alright to me. It also looked like I would have sufficient yarn to complete the project, so I began.
Boy, I ran into an issue straight from the beginning! The dark blue yarn needed for Stitches body was in such a way it needed to be wound before I could begin crocheting. I had to do this to prevent tangles and knots throughout the project. I ran into a knot only about 20 feet into my winding process. I had to restart my winding twice.
Next, I began with beginning to crochet Stitch's head. I quickly ran into another problem, by round 3 my yarn shredded and I had to start over yet again due to the quality of yarn in the kit.

Despite a few restarts due to faulty yarn, I made my way around crocheting Stitch’s head all the way to the decreases. This is where I ran into the HUGE MISTAKE in the Stitch Crochet Kit Instructions.

I’ve been working on this kit for weeks. I’ve redone parts over and over and ended up buying more yarn to start over. I was bound and determined to get this finished if I had to remake the pattern myself!! I started searching knowing I couldn’t be the only one who was in this situation! I feel vindicated at least! LOL Thanks for your video! Like you, I know what I’m doing and if I had this many issues, beginners would be so discouraged!

Just bought this kit in 2023 and I believe the error is fixed. I’m not finding any “dee” in my instructions luckily!
My kit doesn't have that one either. But I am having a fit with the ears.
It's not fully fixed. The left ear is incredibly poorly done. If you read the first sentence of the right ear, it mentions to start with the left ear. The first sentence of the left ear says to start with the right ear.
Rows 7 and 8 are sc all around. Row 9 has you decrease to 10 sc. Row 10 is hidden in row 9. Rows after that need you to have 12 stitches. But you don't increase between the places.
I bought the stitch kit too and got as far as the head and put it away. I thought it was me . I have been crocheting since the 70's so I do know what I'm doing but this one was so frustrating . So glad I came across ur tutorial , So it wasn't just me thanks

Thank you! I gave my niece the Stitch kit and the Winnie the Pooh kit for her birthday. She is experienced in Amigurumi. She felt Pooh bear was easy to follow, Piglet was not and she did her own thing to get through it. She felt the Scrump pattern was well written and Stitch not so much. She sent me a pic of her Piglet and it's cute, she used safety eyes and nose on Piglet, and not the stickers that came in the kit. Such a shame, and I want to contact Hobby Lobby and let them know. The kits are labeled for ages 8+! I don't think an 8 year old would be able to complete these kits. So sad!
Im so glad i looked this up before continuing! I got this kit a while ago as a gift and i started it and ended up putting it down because i thought it was too complicated for me or i must be doing something wrong. I finally picked it back up today because i am much more experienced and confident in making amigurimi. I started with scrump and started having issues and running out of yarn again so i knew something had to be wrong. Thank you for the detailed review!

I think they may have fixed the pattern problem "DEE" because I don't see that in the pattern I just bought. Glad you brought it to their attention! My main concern for this is that it is not labeled as to what level of crochet pattern it is. I don't feel like this is a beginning pattern at all. If I didn't know what I was doing I think I'd be clueless!! MY other issue with this pattern is that there are no stitch counts. I'm going to make notes as I go, but this would be really really helpful like you said. I hope in the future they'll labels this as an intermediate pattern.... but probably those who buy such kits are beginners who want to learn.... so that would hurt their sales.
I KNEW IT!!! I KNEW THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS KIT!!!! I'm doing this exact kit for my co-workers' grandson and I felt so bad for not working on it as much. Mainly because my family is moving and also because I was so frustrated with this damn kit that the only thing I've done with it, is the head. That's it. I thought it was my inexperienced showing because this was my frist real attempt for amigurimi and Stitch looked so simple to do so I was confident that was going to figure it out. However, after reading the instructions, I knew there was mistake in the pattern or rather the instructions gave the impression you already knew how to do some the techniques in it. Plus the pattern feels incomplete. And this is coming from a beginner (that and I've been crocheting since I was 13). If fact, the kit I got from her looks like it was returned at some point because it didn't come as much yarn as your kit. In fact I had to buy more yarn. I feel so much better now that it's not me, it's the kit. Unfortunately this isn't the frist kit I've encountered with awful instructions. I hate how the kit is clearly designed to make money rather than teach someone a skill because people will think they can't do it. Overall, I agree. This kit shouldn't been on the shelves and the fact there's a chance that the pattern is stolen from someone else isn't sitting well with me either.

UPDATE: I've finished this project but not following the kit. I basically followed few tutorials here on TH-cam and just going on my own knowledge. The Stitch I made turned out bigger than it was supposed to be but in my opinion, I like the one better because I actually crochet the eyes (including the fur pattern) and I made it to where it can actually be played with rather something decorative. Plus my co-worker's grandson liked it so that's all that matters to me.
I just bought this kit yesterday and I'm so glad I went online to double check some pricing on Hobby Lobby's website and noticed the horrible reviews. I then Googled the kit and saw that literally everyone said there's not enough yarn. Thankfully the box is still sealed and I will be returning it.

I was able to crochet everything EXCEPT the left ear and right ear on the stitch.. I dont understand how I’m supposed to do it…..

Have you two figured out the ears? That's where I am currently.
I got the head, body, arms, and legs done so far. I'm stick on the nails because it seems impossible to decrease a ch st of 2, 4 times. I came here to see if anyone got the nails done. For the color switches, I just kept cutting them off and adding them. I had a LOT of tails, but I just turned it inside out.
I'm doing the nails now. You add the chain 2 to the FLO section of the foot! That's as fat as I've gotten!
The nails look gross on mine.
Just got the kit and started on Scrump. This is my first project as i have only made granny squares before. I was very confused by the instructions since i have never looked at a crochet pattern before but i figured maybe that is what they normally look like. I was able to finish the head and body before running out of yarn. I feel like the proportions look off. Also you got way more yarn than i did lol.
So I got this kit awhile back. Daughter wanted me to make them. Finally got around to doing it and had several mistakes. Not the same as the ones in this video but I didn’t have enough yarn for scrump’s arms, there was a huge mistake that had two rounds of 10 listed for stitch’s left ear, and I had to discern which one to go with, but then the stitch counts were off either way. It was a mess. They turned out cute though, but not for a beginner I agree. There is some technique that needs more instruction, such as making ovals (scrump’s feet) that have some nuance to them. In some areas it listed YO as YP too.
Ok, how did you do that trouble ear? That's where I am and I don't know how to get those stitches back that it had me decrease in round 9!
Just bought this kit for daughter and mine looks accurate. I don't have the DEE just DEC. And it shows Increase and Decrease definitions.

I just bought this kit today and they have updated the pattern that it doesn't say dee anymore but we'll see how it goes

Me too but the updated version is still unclear especially with the nails and ears. Both ears step 1 instructions say to start at the side of the other ear like what? The nails I don't get cuz it's impossible to decrease a chain 2 unless you use the smallest hook imaginable and to find the next stitches to work with after your chain 2 dec is also impossible with Navy blue yarn that says "Royal Blue". I never seen a dark Navy blue Royal ever...

*edit* i couldnt read the tiny instructions, so had retyped them, fixing what i thought were typos. But, based on the instructions, where do the nails go and why only 2?
**Also, Alot of the typos seem to come from a bad OCR conversion from image to text document.
Crochet is something I’d love to learn I even bought a pattern off of Etsy to do a doily. I’m very intimidated to do it because the instructions look so hard to understand. But, had I bought the stitch kit I’d have been extremely upset and frustrated. I think these kind of videos are very helpful. And, as to reaching out to the designer of stitch totally would. I would encourage you to start with something more simple like a granny stripe blanket or pillow or even a pillowcase. I really find I love crocheting most with amigurumi and anything with a granny stripe. I am currently making a grant stripe blanket from Attic24. It is a very simple and rewarding make. It would be a great start. I should look into some beginner friendly amigurumi patterns. Thank you for the idea
They have updated the instructions and the instances you see ‘DEE’ on your pattern, it is ‘DEC’ on the new ones! And DEC is on the crochet stitches and techniques page now.
Too bad the problem with my kit that there is not enough yarn 😑

I have the kit and I don't see any typos on my pattern
I have made the bee, taco, and the sloth. I also bought the gnome, unicorn.
Bee, taco, and sloth were fine. Unicorn I struggled so badly I threw it in time out. That was like 3-4 years ago.
I'm at the point with stitch that I'm on the left ear, but there's such a huge issue with rounds 7-12. I don't have the number of stitches needed and don't know what to do.
Hubby is telling me to wing it, but I'm so annoyed...
You sped it up so fast that even when I slow the video down to a quarter of the speed I can't see what you're doing. As a beginner who is entirely self taught from watching my mother make the most basic of scarves, I don't know what any of the instructions are telling me to do in the first place. I don't know if your intention was to make this video as short as you could while still adressing the problems you found, but I can't even tell what is and is not a problem yet and don't know what you're doing in order to try and figure it out. I can't seem to find anyone else covering this kit, though, and would really appreciate some help in understanding it better, as I genuinely don't even know what round 2 is telling me to do in the instructions on the head
I was just addressing the massive errors in the instructions as well as the inconsistencies between the other patterns from this company being sold at hobby lobby. This is not intended to be a tutorial or a how to remedy or a how to succeed in making it but to address that even as an experienced crocheter this pattern is confusing and to address I do not recommend it to anyone at any level of experience. The main problem im seeing with the pattern just reading through it was that there are 2 rnd 10s in the left ear portion of the pattern and i cant tell what it actually wants me to do since it doesn't look like the right ear instructions even mirror that portion to figure out whats wrong
I wonder if they fixed it because my patter sheet says dec for where you found the error. I got gift this for my birthday last year, 2023. I got more yarn for scrump than you presented here too. I did personally notice and error where my pattern for the nails portion says ssl which confused me. They definitely were like good luck. You'll figure it out.
It doesn’t say the kit is for “beginner”. It only mentioned “crochet kit”. I guess the company should include a note on the box that it is for “intermediate or advance crocheter”.

This Stitch is going to be the death of me. The ears are so poorly written.
I literally got this kit and didn't even have enough yarn in the kit to finish skrumps head i made it like half way through the head when i ran out and ive been crocheting for about 3 years now even made a pattern for a racoon on my own. This kit was ridiculously hard.
I was going to run out of yarn on Stitch and emailed the company. They sent me three times as much yarn. Now I am just trying to figure out how to do the ears.

my grandma gifted me all 3 disney kits since ive gotten really into amigurumi,,, i did the star wars one first and was not impressed at all, the instructions seemed fine at first but i did have to look up a video and found out the instructions actually came from an official book with amazing detailed instructions, while the instructions in the kit seemed to have been ripped from either the video or the book itself with very little effort put into it considering all the spelling errors and mistakes with the instructions, i also ended up with not enough yarn for yoda’s ears or leia’s hair and the proportions were also very wrong on yoda. i then switched to the needle creations kits, i had gotten a unicorn and the cat with the fish bag…. the instructions again were okay but the proportions were not for some parts. the entire time working with these kits ive wondered if they were prototypes or bootlegs because some of these mistakes should not have been made.
im now working on the stitch kit and i felt like this one was the best one, i started with scrump tho… on the box it makes it out to look like stitch is bigger than scrump when hes actually much much smaller, not to mention the instructions for stitch’s nails have the massive mistake of ‘sc2tog’ instead of ‘dc’…. scrump has great instructions but stitch has been a struggle, at least this kit has given me more than enough yarn for the project… now to decipher what the heck it wants me to do 🙃

I bought this from Amazon several months or a year ago. I pulled the instructions out and was immediately confused. I asked a friend who is experienced with all the abbreviations and she had no idea what “dee” was. I didn’t even try to make it because it was so confusing. I bought the unicorn, flamingo, and taco kits and they explain things SOO much better. I am very disappointed in the stitch kit. I would email the company that produced the kits. Just my opinion.

Not gonna lie at first I thought you were being a tiny bit dramatic about the dee because right away I knew what it meant and I figured anyone with common sense would figure it out… but as the review went on the pattern got much worse and you mentioned if someone were a beginner they may not understand where to repeat etc, then I realized dee being a mistake may not be common sense to a beginner or like you said a kid giving this a try for the first time. Either way there shouldn’t be any mistakes in a pattern. I’ve been wanting to try one of these kits because they look so cute, however I think I will pass now that I’ve seen this review. Even though I think I could figure it out, it’s a principle issue and it should be removed from the shelf.

Ok Iake Amigurumi's. I just got this kit as a Christmas gift. So far they have fixed the "dee" error. Still no amount of stitches at the end of the rows on the written pattern. I'm very upset with the yarn! It keeps splitting.

I’m now regretting buying this kit. I just got it for the scrump doll but I haven’t looked over the pattern yet.
I’m currently working on Pooh and found an error in the instructions. For the body, it doesn’t tell you when to switch to red yarn since the shirt and body are the same piece. Based on the vague image, I’m not 100% sure which row is the color change but I’m guessing row 7 is when you change yarn until row 12 is back to yellow for his neck. This is weird because they mention the color changes in Piglet’s pattern.
When I pause your video, I see you have the same error as me.
Also for Pooh’s head, it jumps dramaticlly in decreased number of stitches.
R14 42 stitches total
R15 36 stitches total (so far so good)
R16 1 sc in 2 st, dec (thats 3 stitches) with 27 stitches total
R17 1 sc, dec for 18 stitches total
R18 dec for 12 stitches total
This leaves a hole but it is small enough that the body covers it as you sew the pieces together
Wow you have a lot more yarn in your kit and mine was missing a color also

I just got this set as a gift and while my instructions don't have the typo and I was able to understand most of the pattern, the instructions for the ears don't make sense to me. You're not supposed to join the magic loop and there's something about scraps of yarn at the end of the rounds but no explanation as to what exactly.
Okay I bought my stitch and scrump kit from fivebelow and mines say the same thing as your pattern that’s on yours crazy. How do I get a pattern for it from plus the scrump pattern.
Thanks for validating my sanity. My noncrocheting niece bought an individual Stitch kit from 5Below (in late 2021)& I knew there was something horribly wrong with those instructions. I dropped the project & a couple of months later bought the Stitch/Scrumptious Duo kit, hoping for better instructions. NOPE!! Exact same instructions for Stitch. Also the yarn in the individual kit was HORRIBLE!! Definitely not enough & kept splitting, seemed old & stale. Duo kit yarn was slightly better in quantity, but not quality. I just decided to find a pattern & make one for my niece from another source. I absolutely agree with your review. That Disney Stitch Crochet Kit is TRASH in my opinion.

I'm sorry... this typo doesn't sound like such a huge deal. Sure, it's not good that they don't say it's not for a beginner, but any experienced crocheter would realise that "dee" is just a typo, then they would continue decreasing and it would turn out fine.
The point is the inexperienced person wouldn’t. A child gifted this wouldn’t. The video is discussing why this is unacceptable for a ton of reasons most of which don’t pertain to the experienced crocheter.

I haven't crochet in a while, Can someone help me with this? And 3: (sc, inc) x6. Do I single crochet increase in the next 6 rows?
You place a single crochet stitch in stitch in your next stitch then 2 single crochet in the following stitch to create the increase. You do this 6 times. So for 12 stitches you follow an AB AB pattern then continue on with the directions

aw man i thought this was a slow tutorial. and btw i think the kit you got was a bad one because mine has clear instructions it doesnt have the dee issue.

I bought this set as an absolute beginner. I was expecting it to explain it a little better in the instructions. Im pretty disappointed but im gonna try my best to make it anyways 😔

I'm fairly new to crochet and amigurumi and thought it would be fun to do these for my daughter. But I've never done a project just using a pattern. I've always followed a TH-cam video. I'm so disappointed with this. It's way beyond my skill level at this point, especially since it's a terrible pattern. That you for reviewing. At least I know I'm not the only one having difficulties.
