It's so unfortunate GM took the best engine they ever designed, and said "we can make this worse", and added AFM

@@mus_xr4653The physical hardware still exists. Even if you get the AFM disabler, the physical AFM lifters are still there which are prone to failure. You can drive with a bad lifter on a Gen 3 Vortec and drive 80,000+ miles on it before it causes any catastrophic or major damage. An AFM lifter would cause instant catastrophic or major damage in less than a few thousand miles.

Really enjoyed this, I think you made a great purchase. Fix the engine, fix the minor rust/body issues, protect the chassis and do the cosmetic stuff as you want to, and you have terrific daily driver that will last you years and years. The only thing that is likely to kill it is that horrible salt they scatter all over your roads. As a former owner of a 2009 Yukon Denali, I saw a lot of similarities as you gave us a tour of the Escalade. Looking forward to your next installment.

I absolutely love the Escalade! Its striking, looks like its lived an honest life, and it looks like exactly the sort of vehicle that has "amazing second life" written all over it. Some things are great for modding, sometimes it feels like most things, but others feel good to revive, freshen, and ENJOY. I stumbled on something like it with my Buick Rainier. I wasn't familiar with the platform, but my Mom found one for my Grandma to replace her old rotten Durango. The price was low, it ran well enough, and it didnt have any signs of catastrophic neglect even at 185k miles aside from smelling like a mixture of a casino and a garden center. Some light cleaning and a round or two with an ozone generator had the interior done and then rear brakes, oil change, transmission fluid, transfer case, air filter and spark plugs later..... Its clean, luxurious, runs and shifts smooth, gets 22mpg on my commute, and it just flows into the rhythm of my life. I have modified every single vehicle I have ever owned, felt a burning need at every turn to improve, push, test. This time it felt nice to just give it a second wind and watch it revitalize and take me on the many normal adventures of my life. My Grandma passed on it, she realized she was getting too old to be climbing up even though she likes to, but I am damn glad that I bought it from my Mom. I really hope this ends up being something similar for you! This just feels like the start of something special, a vehicle that pops into your life and just helps your life flow along in a bit more special of a way. I cant wait to see more!

Fiance and I found a 2001 Audi TT Quattro 225 that had sat for 9 years and sounded like the motor was done for. New Alternator, plugs, coil packs and it was back on the road, driving like it hadn't been sleeping for a decade. Then, a new convertible top, clutch, pre-emptive timing belt and suspension. Feels like a perfect car and she loves driving it. Just has cosmetics to fix. Bringing cars back to life always feels good and it's exciting seeing you work on something new. Tahiti has been an inspiration while I work on my 01 suburban so looking forward to more as always.

That buzzing sound you're hearing from the ceiling is a sensor for the automatic temperature control. It has a tiny fan built into it and they notoriously go bad and start to make that noise. I've had 3 Escalades, an 03 EXT and 05 Base, and my current 07. My 07 is by far the worst of the ones I've owned, and most of that I attribute to living in a salt use area. My 07 had the most rust and issues of any of my two older ones that also spent their lives in the salt (bankruptcy era shortcuts maybe?). Oh, check those rocker panels under your doors. They may not have rusted through yet, but that may not be far off. I noticed a slight orange coloring on them under all my doors and they do give some when I push on them with my finger, so there's rust behind there that has eaten away enough metal to weaken them.
From what I understand the 6.2 in my 07 even though it doesn't have DOD, still has the lifters from the system that came later and that those eventually fail and take out the cam, and sometimes the truck as it costs thousands in repair.
Keep an eye for fuel leaks. My 07's metal fuel pump rotted out and broke a metal connector, spewing fuel out. I have a video somewhere of the fuel pouring off the top of the tank and pictures of just how rust eaten it was. I've never seen anything like it and I'm really disappointed in GM for that among other things.
In the end, I'll probably buy one more Escalade, a 2015 before I retire, but it's going to be from the south or southwestern U.S. that has never lived in the salt and never will see salt as I won't drive it in the winter when I retire. I'll probably pick up another beater, or maybe I'll just keep my 07 for winter duties until it rusts away.

The static like sound you mentioned is actually ACDelco 22834330 Cabin Air Temperature Sensor. It's inside the headliner and right under that speaker like cover. The static like noise is the fan inside the sensor. Fan is taking cabin air inside and the sensor is measuring the temperature. In time fan makes that noise and changing it is really a mess. There should be a second sensor between 2nd and 3rd row.

    What's up Brother Matt,
    I have 2007.
All of them they have AFM lifters,
    Cylinder nbr 1, 7 4 and 6
So even if U spend around 5 grand it will be worth
    Milage are nice,
Only fix that internal parts( Lifters, In case Cam too, and ones U open it Head Gasket of course). And that's it for the engine,
    Then some suspension parts,
    And that's it,
I also did on my 2007, RANGE afm plug in disabling,
Running now all the on V8.
Only when U need to pass Emission ones a year, U need to remove RANGE disabler from OBD port just at least 3 days before Emission test for Yearly inspection, will pass no problem,
Bec. AFM Disabler triggers some Emission codes: ( 02 sensors and Cat sensors).
Ones U drive 3 days without Disabler, it clears by self asasp.
This is what I'm doing with my GMC engines,
    ( GMC V8 from 2007 till presented).
But GM AFM or DOD engines from 2015 up till now, dramatically worst-case then
    from 2007 till 2014.
    Belive me Bro. After 2014,
Never continue with GM, only going back To Ford V8 5,0
Or 3,5l great engines and never GM and Rams can't competition FORD . After 2015 engines engineering
    No way , no way.
Only what is best Outlooks, SUV or Pickups Boddy work,
GM and RAMS are nicer from the body looks

@@RYTHMICRIOT there's a bit of an argument on the boards over when they actually did it. the theory I think might be right is they put the afm lifters in all of them around 2008 on, but the ecm couldn't handle it well enough, so they turned it off. there's a ecm model change along the run, I don't remember off the top of my head when. but it's basically the same hardware but faster and more ram. at that point it could handle the extra code needed for afm to run right, and it's activated in those.

      It could be that also,
But ones he goes to dealer to get any part, as soon as he give them VIN number, they will tell Matt,
Is it AFM active or no
Bec also as soon U press and change button on the cluster, Such as, Trip 1, Transs temp., fuel average, miles distance,
Instant economy etc. There is also V8 and V4 digits shown when U speede is 30mpH
That digits immediately showe V4 Mode,
As My In-Law had black 2007 GMC Yukon XL denali 6.2 , and I drove it several times.
I do what was happening inside engine valves,
But cluster was showing V4 mode as soon as I released Gas pedal over 30mpH. ???
So maybe cluster showing V4Mode, But engine still Using only normally V8,
Best engines was 2000 to 2006.
      Best ever of GM's
Also as we can see on TH-cam, some guys spend money and did great solid fully Mechanic AFM Hardware DELETED. 💯👍👍👍👍👍

The sound over the drive set is the Cabin Air Temperature Sensor Aspirator
There is also another in the rear in the ceiling

Eric O at the South Main Auto Channel has done a few of these kinds of suspension repairs. Probably good to check out his channel. Looks like an awesome buy! Engine could be spun rod bearing. Alex at Legit Street Cars just changed the rod and main bearings on his LS swapped 911.

Great find…I personally prefer the GMT800 platform but as a daily that will serve you well. Hope you plan on upgrading the cam/lifter and springs when you dive into the engine. Looking forward to the content that comes from this new addition to the fleet.

Those old cars are so nice to see running again. I don’t think any car manufacturer has ever mastered the cylinder cut out system. Seems like they all fail relatively quickly

Be sure to check your RPO codes for your battery. Yes there are two battery types and it will tell you which voltage you need.

Great video and I'm looking forward to more. Would love a general ride comparison of the Tahoe to the caddy when she's up and rolling. I didn't know these are rack and pinion, very cool. Also FYI, my 03 Tahoe LT Autoride Z55 package makes the same weird hum/buzz sound from the microphone every once in a while. I bet you that cylinder bore is going to be just fine. With no compression in that cylinder from the blown valvetrain, I figure the piston rings wont expand and seal against the cylinder wall from the normal combustion gas cycle. Fingers crossed for you.

      @ericarmstrong2412 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That's not a microphone. its a temp sensor for the auto air conditioner. its a small fan to blow cabin air over a temp sensor.

25:42 - there's a fan for the auto HVAC. It's the same as the GMT800. A base model Tahoe may not have it if it's not equipped with an auto temp setting.

      @johnnieburkhalter5265 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes, its the fan to sense interior temp for the auto temp system. It's louder in the SUVs because they have two, for the front and rear controls.

Not all the way through the video yet but I'll post it anyway. Don't start that engine again until you check the oil. I have the same truck. Truck has an oil leak and I didn't know the severity of it until my engine sounded just like that. Luckily I keep a couple quarts of oil in my trucks so I pulled over, dipstick bone dry! I put in 2 quarts and the engine went back to normal. It only ran making that sound for about a minute or two before I put in the oil. I still have the leak which I am planning to get fixed soon. I just check the oil every morning before I go out now.

That static is called a ground loop something has a bad ground and is back feeding into the speaker.
Many things can cause it, nightmare to properly fix. Can throw some inline feral magnics for the speakers to help, can also run the steroes ground directly to the negative terminal on the battery.
Correct fix is find the bad ground and wire it into the same ground as the stereos. Some times you can get off easy by running a wire to all the amp channels, and running that wire directly to the amps ground (if you are using aftermarket speakers with an amp).
As I said many things can cause this, but they all come back to a bad ground, causing power to be sent down another devices ground. The static which is heard is interference, nightmare to properly solve as it could be anything.
Aftermarket headlights (led conversions) are a very common cause.

On the Tahoe named to Tahiti. In fact, if you go to a junkyard and you find Esquire door panels, they will fit. You have to get the short way short wheelbase ones.

I just bought a 08 black shorty with black interior. It's a base model. I like it alot. 200867k miles I picked up for 6 flat thru a dealership that wanted 8k for it. All it needed was an oil pressure sensor I replaced. Thankfully that's all it needed. Has some nice tires too and black tint lol. Runs great. Id say I got a good deal out of it

I have the same rust spot on the rear hatch, same crack on the dash and the heater wires for the rear defrost were also hanging down when I got my 09 Denali lol Oh and same lifter noise. The dealer and Texas speed both said the 09s had afm. Be careful with the door handles! 2 of mine broke pretty easy.

I don't know if you know who Monkey Wrench Mike is, but he purchased an Escalade with half a million miles on it, and it runs and drives. All the brakes were shot, the headliner was trashed, and he had to do some other things to it, but he paid close to that, and it wasn't half as nice as yours. You got a steal of a deal on that one! 👍

I think this is a WIN for you. I wonder if the passenger seat didn't work with the switch because it had something (a bag of some sort) sitting in it. Maybe it was a safety feature to keep you from operating the seat while it was occupied.
