As a former hair stylist, I just want to say something. Is dyeing hair bad? Of course, but because most companies want instant color results, a stylist will have to use most like 30-40 vol to get hair that bright blonde in a short period of time. That’s what the damage really is. You’re just blasting the hair with the strongest chemicals and then using more heat to make hair look pretty and healthy. And to dye it to a natural color (I assume with permanent color which also has equally as strong chemicals) is just adding more stress

    • @kairos-049
      @kairos-049 ปีที่แล้ว +163

Especially for Asian people with naturally black/very dark brown hair, isn't it strongly recommended to gradually lighten it over multiple sessions? The least these companies can do is factor in hair changes and multiple salon appointments and breaks when preparing for a new comeback.

@@kairos-049 especially because color doesn’t lift color. So if you have hair that was dyed brown, if you put a blonde color on top, it doesn’t actually lighten it, it more so tones it. The only real way to lighten hair is bleach.
I was just offended when the V.O. was ragging on the stylists. Stylists can only do so much and they are only doing their jobs. And also hair extensions are really hard to blend in. It’s hard to find exact color matches and if you layer extensions too much you can cause tension alopecia. There is always wigs but idk if Korean stylists have the proper skills to secure a wig correctly.

Honestly they should get wigs for idols if they really want their hair to change that often. They have so much money, might as well buy wigs with it. It will help them so much. Both sides will be happy.
EDIT: To the people saying wigs cannot look realistic, you clearly haven't seen modern wigs. Wig placement can look highly realistic depending on the technique used to place it. Also, extensions could also work. They are more permanent for things like promotions & concerts.
Another EDIT: There's a lot of people in the comments saying the same thing as me. K-pop idols should be able to just wear wigs. Periodt. It's safe for their hair. Karina looks so beautiful with blonde hair, but she is probably one of the few idols that I didn't want to see go blonde. Her dark hair seemed so healthy and lustrous, it's a shame that it's damaged now. I even worried for Ningning's hair for the length of time she's been blonde over the past year or so. Why doesn't SM invest in wigs instead of dying idols hair? Especially if they insist on changing their hair with every comeback. The stylists could install the wigs for music videos, live shows, and appearances, and then the idols could go home in their natural hair. On the topic of hair, I often worry for Dawn and HyunA's hair. Although Dawn's hair looks a bit healthier now, their hair usually looks so damaged from all of the bleaching and dying. In recent years I think HyunA's hair was most beautiful during her "I'm Not Cool" era.

She looked amazing with her dark-purple hair, dark-blue hair and black hair, these are definitely her colors - she seems like a deep winter archetype and these colors emphasize her features, while blond/light brown - only wash them out. SM bleached her hair just for the sake of change, and that's so frustrating.
I like how Wonyoung stylists stay consistent in keeping her hair in different shades of brown/black, it's always been that way and nobody has an issue. Idk maybe Karina's change was tied to the fact that Aespa performed for the Barbie movie, and the company wanted to make a refference through her appearance, it would make sense, but I still hope her hair will go back to normal as soon as possible.

Hair stylist here, it’s actually better to bleach the roots on a set schedule (typically every 4 weeks) rather than letting it get too long. If it gets too long it is a much harder process to try and get it all to an even canvas if the client’s desire is to remain a blonde color. If the roots are more than 1/2 an inch it can cause banding when you lighten the hair as the scalp produces heat naturally on its own but pass that length the hair no longer benefits from that heat so the stylist must lighten any length between that “hot zone” and what was previously bleached without overlapping onto the previously bleached hair. Overlapping is what tends to damage the hair, and some people’s scalps are just not meant to handle how harsh bleach is either 😭

It's impossible to keep hair healthy when it is being bleached every two weeks and heat, styling gel/cream is being applied to it everyday. Doesn't matter how much heat protectant you use or how often you use treatments or conditioners.

I recently dyed my hair for the first time pink a month ago. I didn't even dye the roots and my hair is constantly falling out in chunks to the point where I think I'm balding. Not to mention, it's super frizzy and dry. to the point where I have decided I'm never dying my hair and seriously considering getting a bob cut already. Idk how these idols dye their hair, including roots like every 4 months like this. If it's like this for me, I can't imagine the stress their hair is under even with access to all the hair products and treatments.

They do not even put importance on the artists _themselves._ As long as people keep supporting SM they will continue to hurt artists in their company. Something needs to be done regarding that company.

Not just the dyeing. It can’t be healthy to constantly have your hair curled/straighten, put in hair styles that cause breakage. AND most constantly have products like hair sprays. Because of the industry, idols don’t have a prayer for healthy hair. Any good stylist knows hair needs breaks, you can’t be using so many harsh chemicals and heat without some really terrible consequences

So…. Why are Kpop companies NOT utilising more realistic wigs??????
It’s not like we have a wig shortage, they’re not impossible to make. Get a good wig stylist, and get a good hair stylist to braid or set up their hair in a wig cap well enough, and we won’t know what’s real or not!
A good example of this was when VIXX’s N wore an ash brown wig during “Eternity,” in the music video and on stage, since he was also in a drama at the same time.
Wigs are also utilised in girl groups, depending on the concept and personal scheduling.
Wig it up, y’all, it’s more fun And surprisingly way more affordable in the long run, as opposed to going bald earlier than one wants.

Tbh with SM and this concept for Aespa, the least worrying aspect is hair health because of dyeing. Hair is an indicator of overall health not just dyeing but internal processes, lack of sleep/ nutrition, stresses and deficiencies. I'm more worried for Aespa and future surgeries expected of them as they age. At early 20s just to debut they had so much done to be "perfect". I really worry how accepting of this we are as Kpop consumers, as if the idols really have any choice. Do you know it takes upto ONE whole year for the body to heal internally from trauma of surgery? Can Kpop fans unite and start promoting acceptance of visuals and diversity and supporting an idols' interests?

I think it's not SM's fault alone. I mean every comeback u want to have a different look or fit to the concept u are promoting at the time but there are a lot of idols from SM that doesn't dye their hair most of the time. Seohyun, Yoona, Yuri, Sooyoung and Tiffany were black hair most of the time on their active years. Almost all of RV members stayed black hair and if I remember Irene mentioned that she can't dye her hair to purple/violet again since it damaged her hair so i think idols do have still the freedom if they want to dye their hair or not.

NCT have been asking fans to choose between two colors and even ask for suggestions on what color they want their hair to be dyed next. At most, I feel like the company would suggest some colors that fit the concept and it would be up to the artists if they'd do it or not.

I went through a crazed hair-dying phase where I would change my hair color every 2-3 months but never a dramatic color such as blonde, blue, green etc. and it already wreaked havoc on the health of my hair and scalp. That was when I was in my early 20s, I grew out of that hobbit then boom, a heart break and of course poor decisions ought to follow. I decided to bleach my hair to a platinum blonde, you could call it my revenge hair because my ex who body-shamed me for coloring my hair so often (i.e. he said I didn't even like myself so much that I would change my appearance so often as in dying hair). Back to the hair story, I got in total 3 sessions of bleaching, toning and coloring which finally gave me the lightest possible blonde from my light-medium brown hair. I paid a hefty amount of money for that color, knowing the damage bleaching could do to one's hair. Still, there was un-repairable damage done. My hair become so brittle at the touch of water, it was just mushy and weak. Winds would turn my hair into what would be a promising and cozy nest for birds. And no heat whatsoever if I wanted to break my hair in pieces, said my hair stylist. Not to mention all the hair loss. I honestly thought I would go bald.
It took me 3 years to grow all the bleach part out and my hair still did not get back to its healthy state before all that chemical. It has been a little over 5 years since I last dyed my hair. Did I love my blonde look? Absolutely. Would I ever do it again? You would have to k!ll me first and then bleach my corpse's hair. In a nutshell, don't bleach your hair if you can live without it.

As both a licensed Hair Stylist and Aesthetician, there are things that can be done to help idols. One big thing is to not go for instant color results as that causes major damage. Normally on natural black or dark brown that needs the double process, you do one lightening job, give the hair a break for a week or two (with hair treatment), then they come back for the second lightening job. But for idols who need the change quick, stylist using the strongest bleach (30-40 volume), usually twice in one sitting then add the permanent color/toner. This is really damaging! Stylists and the companies should at least be getting idols to have hair treatments done to help protect the hair, even scalp treatments to help with chemical burns. And not dye their hair dark again if they are just going to bleach it again in a few months.
As for the wig idea that I've seen in the comments, it's possible but has it's own problems. The idol's dance choreography and if the wigs will stay on without needing touch ups for wig glue and pining (I've done this and it's not fun, though wigs have come some way in ten years). Plus wearing a wig on stage under hot, powerful lights for several hour concerts can also be harmful, leading to overheating, fainting and heat stroke, and unlike hats, they can't just easily take it off (also been on stage with a wig on, you overheat quickly and sweat bullets). Then for the company were time is money, having the idols always putting on, styling, then taking off wigs adds up compared to one trip to the salon. Considering that the companies can't take care of their idols hair, would they even get the proper wigs for the job? I would hope so but the realist in me doubts it.
Either way, lets hope for better treatment of idols, from head to toes.

I just want to point out a few things as someone who knows a decent amount about hair. (No I did not go to school for hair dressing and no I do not have any type of cosmetology license, I'm self taught tho I did pass the practice test for the license with flying colors.) Anyway, if the idol's hair is that bad, the stylists probably aren't doing their jobs correctly. There are things like Olaplex and other bond builders that can be mixed into bleach and dye that helps repair the hair and prevent damage. They're also probably using too high a level of developer with the bleach.
    3) yes, asian hair is one of if not the hardest hair type to bleach. The coarser the hair, the more damage it retains and the longer it takes to remove color. However, that being said, if they're having to bleach the hair more than 2-3 consecutive times (depending on the color that's being removed) then they probably aren't using foils. And if they are using foils then they are probably taking too big of sections.
    4) Direct dyes (semi permanent) don't damage the hair at all. They're deposit only and if anything, a lot of them condition the hair and make it soft, thicker feeling, and fluffy.
    5) Hair isn't "healthy" to begin with. Hair is nothing but strands of protein. It's not alive. If it's not alive it can't be healthy.
    6) If their scalps are getting that bad, then their stylists need to 1: stop washing their hair at least 24 hours before bleaching it. The more oily the hair the better because the oil protects the scalp. Washing it beforehand can cause micro abrasions to the scalp and cause burning from the bleach. And 2: need to make sure they're using bleach and developer that is labeled safe for on and off scalp application. Coz not all bleaches are.
    7) Bleach and heat aren't the only things that can cause damage. For balding you could have alopecia (unrelated to extensions) or general balding which can happen as early as in the 20's (men only). Lack of vitamins and nutrients can also cause hair loss and excessive frizz, especially when lacking in omega-3. Other causes of hair loss can be: lupus, thyroid disorder, hormone imbalance, or a deficiency of zinc, biotin, protein and iron which is most common for people who have very strict diets.
I could go on for hours but you get the gist. The problem isn't necessarily them coloring their hair regularly (I've been bleaching and dying my hair many times per year, every year, including using heat and extensions for 13 years and my scalp has never once burned and my hair has never once broken off). If their hair is that bad then people most likely aren't doing their jobs correctly and/or the idols have health issues unrelated to the hair.

But most of the time when heavy damage happens is because the client wants instant results, or in case of idols its the company that want instant result and they are the ones paying the stylist to do the job. and in case of kpop. their livelihood depends on these companies so they cant refuse the service. and they just do what the company wants.

Like a year into the frequently dyeing my hair, I also cut it to chin length due to damage, but I'll also state that it was the hair that had thinned out and had been bleached or processed with permanent dyes too many times. My hair is pretty healthy right now and I just bleached my hair from possibly permanent dye and my hair is now a dark purple.

not being paid for this but someone give these idols some ion after color treatment!!! that saved my hair after dyeing it every time and gives it its normal texture back with added softness and manageability! what bothers me is the stylists that don’t offer them advice as to which products to use for the after care and the companies and managers who don’t make sure that they use said products!

Normally the bleach isn't supposed to reach the scalp you got to apply it at 1 cm maximum from the scalp lol. And why not let the roots with the original color and just ombre whatever the color or bleaching 😅

I used to bleach my hair every month or two when I was blonde for 2 years but I eventually had to stop because the bleach would hurt my scalp upon contact. Not even basing my scalp with coconut oil was helping me anymore. If it's causing chemical burns they need to stop because once the scalp has scarred enough and the follicle is damaged, that hair is never growing back. Maybe they should try an off the scalp application?

Ever since SeoTaiji & Boys started idol groups in the 90s, before kpop industry really took off there were times there were only a couple of boy groups and a couple of girl groups and not much competition. But now there are dozens of male teams dozens of female teams and it's become very hard to make self known/remembered in the kpop world. Taeyong may have lost scalp health (and I feel very bad that he cries from pain) but in exchange he is so recognizable as center/visual because he's experimental with hair color, different concept and outfits with every comeback. He's also become a fashion icon and it means more potential to make money when 127's career becomes dormant due to back to back military enlisting. I do wish the hair artists come up with better techniques to improve hair/scalp health.

As a someone who use platen hair color for years i can say that even tho bleaching my hair constantly my hair is quite healthy ( thats whats the hair dressers says) as a blonde so i think that the reason of the damage of their hairs is poor care and constant heat and this companys job ta take care for cuz the hair stylist can use heat protection there is lots of products that pretty good to protect the hair also u cant use normal shampoo when its comes to bleached hair and those shampoos are expensive as hell and not just shampoo cream serum essence mask if they gonna dye their hair they should give a hair care budged to them

Wigs. They exist, and are already super popular in the entertainment industry.
Damaging idols natural hair is so unnecessary. Somebody needs to tell SM stylists.
Edit after reading some of the other comments: good quality wigs that are installed properly look like natural hair. If u watched TV & movies, if you ever went to a pop concert, or even watched a musical or looked at a magazine cover or watch popular social media - I guarantee there were multiple peope using wigs but you didn't even notice.

You know hiring hair stylist that's great at wig installing would so great, and not damage their hair.
I mean I dye my hair a lot too, but my scalp is very sensitive, so I try my best to avoid my scalp, this is thanks probably to when I was kid that I was made to relax my hair to be straight (it was brutal)

  • @hiya1399
    @hiya1399 ปีที่แล้ว +9

0:56 As a stylist, please know you cannot dye your hair blond, you can only bleach it blond. Dying and bleaching are two different things. Bleaching is stripping the hair of it's color and dying is depositing the color back into the hair follicle. Most company's can avoid bleach breakage by using a bond system such as Olaplex which will protect the clients hair. However, these bond systems are expensive. I think these company's are cutting cost due to money issues and at the expense of the artists hair, which is heartbreaking to see. Karina had healthy, thick hair. Her stylist could have used a bond system to protect her hair while bleaching and prevented a lot of her hair loss. This was avoidable which makes it even more upsetting. Now she's left with bleached hair that hasn't even been toned correctly and the shade doesn't match her skin tone. It's going to be a long time before her hair will recover.

Why is no one talking about Blackpink's Rosé and her hair? Her natural hair must be brown, Now Rosé's hair was Red, black, purplish silver, and now blonde. Now she's rocking blonde all the time. These YG stylists must be careless of my bias wreckers hair because I believe that her hair was so damaged that they just stopped dying her hair. But the stylists could of give her wigs for Boombayah,Whistle, Playing with fire, As if it's your last, D4, HYLT, Lovesick girls, etc.

Korea is actually pretty good with hair salons and extensions and dying and fixing damaged hair and they have pretty good and famous wig salons too so why is none of this applied to kpop? Some of this is basic hair knowledge like with bleaching and dying back and forth, the damage from bleach, and the hair extensions stuff… stuff that money should be put into in these big companies and stylists should know… come on… especially with companies as big as SM.
