  • My dash lights were flickering at night and I read the the MFS might be the culprit. So I pulled the switch, cleaned the pins and re-installed it. Dash lights work great now.

    This video was a great help. As a Jeep owner for the last 23 years, I can really appreciate the low cost repair work that can be done to WK and WH Jeeps. WK/WH are very cheap to buy in the UK and maintain if you pick the right ones that have not been abused too much. I run a WK 5.7 HEMI on LPG which gives me the same running costs as a small car.

    Thank you for posting this video. The turn signals on my 2007 Grand Cherokee went wonky. The left turn signal would stay on in the center position. Because of your video I just got a new multi function switch from the local auto parts store and put it in according to your great instructions. In a few minutes the problem was solved.

    Before!.....You buy a new multi-switch....take the old one out and blow in the 8&3 plug connector and tap the switch box in the palm of your hand.
    I did this, and after reinstalling it, it has worked fine.

    Just replaced the MFS switch in my 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the help of your video and no prior experience of messing with the steering wheel. Thank you for the video, you saved me a a ton of time and money. The part cost $60 bucks after shipping and only took about 15-20 minutes. To anyone attempting this make sure you have the actual T-15 and T-20 tools. I initially tried to use a universal screwdriver with torque attachments but the universal didn't fit in the hole. Lol. Thanks again!

    I watched this video several years ago when my wand went bad like everyone else's. I replaced the wand with a new one but the turn signal switch is not as good as the OEM's. It had bothered me ever since because I knew the OEM wand probably can be fixed by sandpapering the contact copper wire. Finally, I did it today. The OEM wand is back and it is fantastic. For anyone who is reading, you need torx 20 for the 3 screws of the plastic housing and torx 15 for the 2 screws that secure the wand itself.
    Clean the 3 copper contact wire using a sandpaper as shown in this video works great. The OEM contact gets oxidized over time due to moisture.

    Great video took about 35 minutes start to finish. This applies to the 2007 Grand Cherokee as well. Symptoms were left blinker on in the off and right turn position. One suggestion install the two outer screws holding the shroud together first, it makes it easier to put the fine threaded middle screw in.

    • @huntermiller1370
      @huntermiller1370 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Jeep just started doing this the other day. The Right and Neutral position make the left turn signal blink. In the Left position it turns off. Did you need to replace the the switch or just clean the pins?

    • @diydan30
      @diydan30  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might be a short so cleaning the contacts could fix it, otherwise you are probably going to need a new switch. I would remove the switch and clean it, if it doesn't work then dont reassemble the shroud and get a new switch, it should take you 10 minutes to replace it once the shroud is removed.

    Great video! Many thanks! But I cannot find the right replacement for my 2006 WK... My model doesnt have AUTO headlights BUT she has rear fogs which switch location is the same as (A) selection on the MFS... I'm not sure if the MFS with (A) is gonna work and switch my rear fogs on/off or I would need to work out some wires (maybe a swap) on the MFS harness... I'm now about to remove it and try to clean the pins, as you did, but I wonder if it would be possible to disassemble it, removing the rotary knobs, in order to clean deep inside the MFS. Any ideas, please?

      Not sure but it's worth a try. Get some sandpaper remove the switch and clean the contacts. All it will cost is a little time. If it doesn't work you need to decide if a new switch is worth trying. Seems to me that if you have replaced the fuse and bulb the only thing left is the switch. Good luck.

    We have a problem in our grand cherokee 2006 4x4, when we start the ligths, if we ligths on only the minimun ligths every things works ok, but when we swicth on the front lights, only starts the rigth one, if we start the hi-ligths only start one hi-ligths at left side, and one normal ligth(not a hi-ligth) at rigth side , meanwhile the wipers blades, the windows and the claxon doesn't work, and we hear a circuit noise inside of the place where is the multifunction swich. can you help?

    • @diydan30
      @diydan30  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +hugo barboza colon Sorry, but I don't know what the issue is. You could start by removing the MFS and sanding the contacts to see if that makes any difference. If it does then its a free fix for the lights, if it doesn't then no harm done. Have you checked the bulbs in the lights to make sure they are working?
      I have not removed the wiper switch but assume it is similar to the MFS for the lights, if so, remove it and try sanding those contacts.

    • @diydan30

      My best guess is the multi function switch, it can cause all sorts of electrical issues. You could try using some sandpaper to polish the old switches contacts and see if it still happens, if it doesn't you are good to go. If it does then it might, emphasis on might, be the switch, so the only option would be to purchase a new one and see if it fixes the issue.

    Silly question... you just unhook the negative battery terminal and then reconnect when done? Does that drain your battery?

    • @diydan30
      @diydan30  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, it will not drain the battery. Just a safety precaution.

    Dan, UPDATE!!!! Her turn signals don’t work, she can’t change wiper speeds and the washers don’t work. She also said her lights stay on when the car is running. My Nissan Service Manager and I think it is the SCM (steering column control module). What do you think?

    • @diydan30
      @diydan30  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its unlikely that both switches failed at the same time, so that points to the something else. I would think that the next thing in the chain to check is the SCM. Do the cruise control and radio buttons work on the steering wheel?

    DIY Dan, was your issue that the dash and climate control lights would flicker from bright to dim? That is what mine is doing and just want to make sure it's the same issue. It looks like you posted this video about a year ago? How has cleaning the contacts held up since?

    • @diydan30
      @diydan30  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Brady It was definitely the dash lights and I think the climate control lights were flickering too. But I didn't really pay much attention to them since the dash lights were so much brighter and were the most distracting while driving at night. As for the longevity of the fix. I haven't seen the issue return, so I guess it solved it?? Give it a try, its a quick job if you have the tools. Good luck.

      +DIY Dan , yeah I did it already but haven't test yet. Did you only clean the terminals visible in your video? Or did you get the vehicle side terminals as well? I can barely see them much less get to them.

    • @diydan30
      @diydan30  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Brady Just the terminals on the switch.

  • @nsbp12
    @nsbp12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just for clarification, you took out the old one, sandpaper the three dots (clean up) and put it back in to see if it would make a difference and stop the blinking. If it didn't, then you went and bought a new switch....Did I understand that correctly?

    • @diydan30
      @diydan30  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I sanded the connection pins and put the MFS back and it still works to this day. Others have had to replace theirs, so I suggest sanding the pins first and if that doesn't resolve your problem then purchase a new MFS.

    • @diydan30
      @diydan30  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would check the fuses under the dash first. You will have to look up which fuse the headlights are on, but that should be fairly easy. If they look good then I would look at the relays under the hood, once again you will need to figure out which one the headlights are on. I dont think you need to replace the part I show in the video.

    • @mangeles184

      Fuses is ok I replace the relay just now and after drive like 30 min. Ligths is working so I put the old ralay is working to so I have the funtion switch I gonna replace you think is the problems the switch may start to get bad

    • @diydan30
      @diydan30  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did it because I didn't want any risk of the airbags going off or a short to cause subsequent issues. So I would highly recommend it. Could you risk it? Yeah, probably, but for 2 minutes of extra work why run the risk?

    I have the same vehicle as you, and my instrument panel is flickering as well (the all the lights come on and go off repeatedly). I've heard it's the PCM, I've heard it's the Ignition switch, and now it's the MFS. Please help....thanks!

    • @diydan30
      @diydan30  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would try my fix. Take the MFS out, sand the connectors, or get a new one and test it out. Worst case you are out $70 if you buy a new one and it doesn't work. I sanded my connectors and haven't had the problem since.

    • @diydan30
      @diydan30  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also I think there is a recall for the ignition switch for an unrelated issue. I believe it's P41, so the dealer might replace it for free.

    • @diydan30

      Does the indicator selector still lock into position when you indicate left or right? If so, then there is probably a short in the switch, if not then the selector is broken. Either way it would seem like the likely cure is to replace the switch.
