  • This speed art edit is from a shoot I did a year or so ago with gorgeous model Amie-Jayne Boulton and amazing makeup artist Joanne Bates (Beauty Within). The pair came down to Bournemouth and we did two shoots, one in my garden in the morning (which this photo is from) and another that evening on the rocks by the sea at Lulworth Cove.

In this edit, I thought I would try using various overlays to add a more dreamy feel and effect in the photo. I used some overlays I bought and I also found some for free online. I find the free overlays on sites like deviantart.com. Just be careful to comply with any rules of use when using free overlays or images in your work. I also added a red light painting overlay which I made myself a couple of years ago as my fantastic husband made me a DIY light painting brush as a Christmas present!
If you enjoy using Photoshop and you're learning photo editing, I really encourage you to play in Photoshop and try new things. It's only a digital photo, if it doesn't work out you can just delete it! By trying new things you learn techniques and improve your skills every time. A few months ago I didn't work with overlays at all, it's only in recent months that I've really got into using them as I like to create foreground blur in my images but there isn't always something at the location which you can shoot through. I therefore began by adding one overlay just to create some foreground blue and additional volume to my images. Since then, I've really got into using them and if I have the time to spend on an edit, I enjoy just playing!
I have rather an obsession with colour. It takes me a long time to get happy with colours in my images and I do tend to go in different directions and change my mind quite a few times when colour grading! I think when you're doing a lot of colour grading work, it's good to take a break and come back and look with fresh eyes though as your eyes tend to adjust!
I hope you enjoy this floral portrait speedart edit. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions or if there's anything particular you'd like to see on my channel!

Awesome awesome awesome. It would take me this long to crop it. LOL. I really have to get to know this. Years ago I learned Paint Shop Pro pretty well but stopped using it. Everything has changed since then.

Thank you Ian. I just play around in Photoshop in these speed-edits. I like to stick a film on in the background and experiment sometimes when I don’t have deadlines for giving photos. I find it quite relaxing!

I know, the speed edits are just to show my overall process, not really for learning. I will be doing more normal speed tutorials in the Photoshop Tutorial playlist. I'm just struggling for time at the moment as there is lots on with weddings and workshops during the Summer period. In Autumn and Winter I will do tutorials more regularly.
