    This game is one of the most interesting fantasy games I've played. It really feels dark and desperate

      I know right?
      Also these "parchment" briefings so used in the warcraft series and this game are so awesome!
      Myth 1 was a pinnacle of dark fantasy.

      I recently found a comic Bungie came out with called Tales from Myth The Fallen Lords and I have to say it's criminal they haven't revisited this series! It had a great world/characters and lots of stories to tell :)

      bloodrunsclear Absolutely. Unfortunately a couple of the key people who worked on it aren't around anymore. Like guy that wrote the trow story in the comic left just two or three years ago. Probably the worst thing is that Marty got fired last year. The story in Myth is great but without Marty's music it just wouldn't be the same.

      +bloodrunsclear You might be interested in Glen Cook's Black Company. It's very, very similar in terms of plot and tone and was the inspiration for the story in TFL. Hell, parts of it are ripped almost completely intact from the Black Company; a number of powerful, dead wizards reborn to service evil and being told from the viewpoint of an average soldier.

    This is a game with a heart and a soul. There is desperation, and there is hope. I've never played a game that gives me more emotions than this one.

    Wish there was more lore written for this universe, The desperation and sense of loss is so palpable and really makes this feel real feel honest.

    Myth was ahead of its time and featured one of the most absorbing storylines ever written for a PC game. It was aptly titled because it was steeped in western mythology and featured a grand background saga of larger-than-life foes slugging it out with the fate of humanity hanging in the balance, yet the focus on the desperate exploits of one legion of soldiers and their exploits over the course of the war (the player's perspective) really served to immerse you in the experience. Too bad Microsoft got their talons in Bungie and forced them to make nothing but Halo games, because a return to the Myth franchise would be wonderful to see on today's hardware.
    I still can't help but think that the writers of Myth were big fans of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time fantasy novels because they followed the same general playbook, in which the great heroes of a bygone age essentially make a deal with the devil and are resurrected to become the scourge of the modern age. It's certainly a motif that makes for a great story...

    • @Blastadonn
      @Blastadonn 10 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The heroes of a past age don't make a deal with the Devil - they are resurrected by the Leveler to serve as an avatar for the Dark.
      Anyways the Myth storyline draws heavily from The Black Company books by Glen Cook.

      Spector It's a good series, but it's not well written, if that makes sense? In that world there is a great evil called the Dominator who comes by every couple thousand years and destroys everything, and in his entourage are 10 great sorcerers he bound to his will (The Ten Who Were Taken). However, when he reappears, so to does the White Rose, the antithesis of evil, who defies him, around whom the world rallies. When the Book begins, the Dominator has been defeated for a few hundred years, having been betrayed by his Wife, the Lady. and bound in captivity, interrupting the Cycle. The Lady begins an Empire of Lesser Evil, with the Ten by her side (who are held by a weak grip, and so fight and scheme among themselves), but is fighting a prolonged war against the Rebels of the White Rose, Fanatics who want power but use the White Rose as a symbol of resistance. Desperate, the Lady seeks allies to help her turn the tide, and so enters the Black Company, a Mercenary group from the South city of Khatovar.
      The story is told in the first person by the Company Medic, Croaker, as he and other Veterans of the Company deal with the moral confliction that comes when employed on the side of Evil.
      Hilarity ensues. ;)

      Mm... I see what you mean. Sounds like it takes a great core concept but adds on too many layers of complexity to do it justice. In that sense, while the Myth-makers may have ripped off that concept to some extent (ie. Dominator as the Leveler), I think they pared it down enough and re-cast it in such a way as to give if greater resonance.
      I guess the Bungie crew also made use of the same kind of first-person perspective narrator too, in that both stories are told by one of the troops in the front lines of the conflict.

    • @jameson32
      @jameson32 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Spector I recommend The Black Company as well. The only real complexity comes from all the characters of the story. Read a chapter into it and see if you like it.

    Thanks for this! I fell in love with this game the first time i saw it being demo'd in the gaming store and instantly became a fan and that started my love affair with Myth TFL and its sequel Myth II Soulblighter. From the epic story and its engaging narration and soundtrack which still haunts the till this day. Bungie really revolutionise the interface with its true 3D environment and game physics which became the base from other real time strategy RPG games that followed after.

    What were the other Fallen Lords doing during the siege of Madrigal? The Watcher is farting around in the south for some reason, and chases elements of the Legion out of Covenant after they're sent there for the Codex post siege. The Legion then pushes to the Cloudspine to deny the passes to the Deceiver, who is approaching in force from the East. Well, what was he doing in the East with such a large force? And where is Soul Blighter? I think there are other unnamed Fallen Lords as well that go unmentioned.
    Has always bugged me. My head canon says that even though the armies of the West were crushed at Covenant, there were still other wars to be fought in the West, and in the East. The Watcher is pressing the lands of the fir'Bolg and other areas in the North/West. The Deceiver is mopping up the remains of the Cath Bruig. Soul Blighter, like Balor before him, is obsessed with unique magical items, and is searching for the Tain in and around Forest Heart.
    Balor is back in his fortress play pokemon or something.
    At least that's what I tell myself :)

    • @cr4yv3n
      @cr4yv3n 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Blastadonn Problem was these FLs weren't as "organized" as once thought.
      Balor may have bound them to his will, but they still hated each other and trolled each other and some would outright want to KILL each other.
      Basically it would be like the the strongest army would have generals fighting - literally -among themselves using their armies because of past grudges,
      Balor was a moron for letting them do this lol.

    • @jameson32
      @jameson32 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Blastadonn The rest of the fallen probably assumed that Shiver had the siege of Madrigal sewn right up and were just mopping up elsewhere - no reason to over commit and risk getting wiped out the way Rabican was when Tharsis exploded... The Deceiver could have been in the East rebuilding his army from the dead imperials of the Cath Bruig. Probably no shortage of corpses East of the Cloudspine at that point.

      My two cents that might interest you about Balor always standing on Rhi'anon: This place was a key point for the dominance of the whole known world of Myth. Balor got the support of Trows because he released them from the imprisonment that they were condemned on Rhi'anon. He had to hold his ground over there the whole war to avoid any kind of alignment deviance of the Trow nation (or even make them protected against any kind of attack from the 9). If he went after the 9 by himself, I bet there would be destruction everywhere and the 9 would meet a lot more difficult holding on, however, he would be very unsafe regarding on how to secure his power after the destruction of the last humans cities on the West. Trows were crucial for Alric success on Myth II, and since they are behemoths with brains, they were good captains for the armies that had them (if you think about, they were the only rational thinking creature on the Dark side, besides Shades and Fallen Lords).
      Not sure about that logic? Think on that way (I swear it will be an interesting text about Myth lore):
      We only see Trows with the following Fallen Lords: Deceiver and Soulblighter (and Balor, the big boss who secured the Trow alliance). Balor probably only admitted more power to those, thus he gave those giants of stone to them, and feared the growing of the Watcher power (which most likely was the second most powerful foe on TFL). That's why Watcher was left alone wandering in the West, and got in the end only a scattered army and battered Shades by what we see on his death level. Balor or Soulblighter didn't appear to care a lot about his death anyway.
      According the canons, Trows secured the front assault that the Legion made on Balor (and that's why there was no Trow on the back of the fortress).
      Shiver was loyalist to Balor, although the less important Lord for Balor... Kind of wild theory here, I know, but she was going after the most important place for Balor objectives, so we can guess that she actually was caring after the main objective of Balor's carnage over civilization, and probably was rushing to Madrigal in order to gain more respect and confidence from Balor. Finishing off cities was a good way to increase Dark army numbers, and by what we saw on Myth II and I, she was the weakest one among all the Fallen, so she wanted to be more important and powerful.
      The Deceiver has an interesting connection regarding the Mountains in the middle of the map... For some weird reason didn't eliminate Alric when he could, ending the best chance of the ... He also was being protected/held by Warlocks over the Stair of Grief (part of the Cloudspine) on Myth II, so we can guess that he was always up to some scheme at some place, but was smart enough to obey Balor. Can't really be sure if he was after Watcher's arm the whole time over there, but my best guess is that he was responsible for guarding the passages of the Cloudspine for Balor, an important position.
      Soulblighter seems to be really loyalist to Balor, but he wanders everywhere after artifacts, caring a lot about how to be more powerful through obscure artifacts, thus being very absent on the first half of TFL, but fighting off till the last thrall on the end when Balor really needed him. He never really showed up until the Forest Heart episode, which was a Pyrrhic victory for him. I'm formulating a theory right now about that: *He showed up on the flight from Covenant, so we can theorize that the time that he could read the Total Codex was on the date before the Legion and Watcher could rush after it (he was the guy who always wanted artifacts, so how could he miss the Total Codex?). But why he didn't pick the Codex for him? He wanted it to be captured by the Legion? He had his own arrangements with the Head (which ended up being the one who had access to the whole book)? It boggles my mind it, but I think that he knew everything by himself on the ruins of Covenant: About how he would need to wait for the Summoner to be born to progress on his plans showed on Myth II, before everyone else knew!! For some reason, he tried after this episode to find the location of the Tain as soon as possible, since he knew that this would be the place that the Summoner would resurrect the Myrkridian kind, meaning that this artifact would exist until the Summoner's birth... But plans went really wrong after that. Sorry about that crazy theory, haha, but it was worthy mentioning*.
      I'm very curious about what happened to the other Fallen Lords, since even the secondary canons sources give almost no information about them (well, by what I know so far). TFL had a great story. I still think that a chaotic rehearsal of tides after Soulblighter's death would be the way for a story of Myth IV... Why don't let us be an avatara trying to kill Alric, since he killed the (most likely?) last leveler, in order to break the continuous cycle of good guys turning into villains? Or put us on many narrators POV on different periods of Myth history! Maybe one day....

    • @charlesballiet7074
      @charlesballiet7074 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He had his own arrangements with the Head (which ended up being the one who had access to the whole book. we know who the head was from Mjarin and that he knew the total codex. It could be that in exchange for information about becoming the leveler or more importantly how to break the cycle that soulblighter did not destroy the head. Remember soulblighter was Damas one of the most dutiful and religious of the heroin guard. There's hints that Damas was torn between what he remembered himself as and what he became. thats why of all the fallen he looks almost unchanged from when he was a hero. just that he inflicted self mutilation to reflect his inner suffering and scrawl a question sign into his chest marking his search for an answer. Remember he was in love with Ravana who became Shiver and explains why of all the fallen she remains with soulblighter in myth 2. Soulblighter/damas was never interested in attaining personal power especially through witchcraft. He followed a life of austerity and dedication to his emperor. I think when Soulblighter wanted the head of Balor it wasn't to necessarily resurrect his master but because that was his chance to change balor, or as he hoped turn balor into another talking head without a body. another fallen leveler that would make room for his plan to destroy the cycle. It even stated that soulblighter sought not to conquer but to destroy, to destroy the world that created monsters like him.

    • @PhotonTrooperGaming
      @PhotonTrooperGaming 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, my theory is totally useless/absurd? In a strategical sense I think I still got it right on some topics regarding why the movement of Fallen factions were so weird at some points... One question: All of this nice knowledge comes from Myth III? I never played it, since it is a common consensus on myth community that the third game was very weak, but maybe I should try just for the story. Watcher character looks very weird by the little that I saw, and the dwarves looks cool! Do you think that the campaign has an interesting or boring story, despite the play ability aspect?
      Still, Soulblighter showing up on the flight from Covenant makes sense now. And our Mazzarin slayer, Watcher, was targeted/hated by everyone else apparently.
      At any point on any Myth source they explain the weird motive that made Deceiver convince the Trows to consider in helping us on Myth II? I always wondered about the "furor poeticus" or whatsoever that made they play a gruesome game with the legion guys.
      Anyway, thanks for the contribution!
