Why do we put up with all these distractions? How can we avoid them? Bishop Barron shares how to fight back and find pleasure in "useless things."

    Now that I am elderly, retired, one of my most enjoyable things to do is listen to the sounds of family. Quietly listening to the sounds of my children. My children are now grandmothers, mothers, children and their sounds when they gather is music to my ears in these elderly years. When alone I can reflect on that sound of family unity. It is lovely.

    For years I would tell my family and friends there was mental and spiritual fortitude in catching the chicken, slaughtering the chicken. plucking all its feathers, washing and then preparing it for cooking. I'm not even sure if there are more steps, but I am aware that some of the monotonous chores from the past were beneficial to individuals. Same thing with washing each individual garment on the washboard. We're loosing our fortitude. Just read a publication about knitting, weaving and needlepoint. These types of activities help to strengthen us. I keep telling my grown daughters to "put the phones down" Thank you great discussion !! By the way I am a retired chemistry teacher saying to my students, "everything (the whole world) is based on mathematics!"

    A great Catholic tradition is to occasionally undertake a spititual retreat of either a weekend or a week, while residing in a spiritual centre. These are valued times during which silence reigns supreme. They are usually conducted by the Centre, under the guidance of a priest. Meditative talks are interspersed by Mass and other religious services, so that prayer leads to contemplation. A refreshing way to live, eat and pray alongside others in silence, apart from some self directed breaks when one can engage in conversation with another during a walk outside of the Center.
    No chance of distraction, only a slowing down of the soul. Try it, it can become addictive! Thanks

      Watch them all again! All of the sermons are worth reflecting upon more deeply, as Christians did of old when there was no television or internet! Every single sermon is a master class on the Bible and worth hearing again! You can always watch the mass of the day and then go back to Bishop Barron or Father Steve. Plus there is so much content on the Word on Fire Digital app for iPhone and then 10 years of videos online and 20 years of podcasts. Lots of content!!

Wld it be beyond us to know of each and every heart that visits us "in spirit" in these times.? I am resolving till it is more available to visit "them", the 3 Divine Persons, the Holy, Humble and true God, the great "I AM", and say, " MY God, YR servant is here." and rejoice to be in His sanctifying Presence! God bless.

    Thank you Bishop Barron, in Ohio still distanced from the Eucharist, distractions have become even more powerful. Our screens brought us the Mass, the Eucharist. The center of our lives and eventually over time these screens, whatever they offered, became equally important. Distraction becomes an addiction, in self isolation when it’s all we have at the push of a button. So thank you for repeating this all important perspective. Also I wish we had drive in Sacraments here, wonderful story to hear. The distance from the Eucharist is far more troubling and painful then I could have ever foreseen. God Bless you both and little Gilbert.

    Thanks for your video on this topic of useless vs useful things to do. I've been cracking myself up over my life with this question, I guess there is a contemplative side of me, wondering if what I've been doing, at any one time, is what I was supposed to be doing with my life. Through the grace of God, it just recently made sense to me that as long as I'm doing whatever I'm doing for the greatest glory of God, I should be alright, so even if I'm bored, don't try to disguise my boredom but acknowledge it, and if it bothers me to much, offer I'd offer my feelings to Jesus and ask Him to guide me. Anything we do for the grace of God, very much like St. Therese of Lisieux said, no matter if it is a small thing to do, give glory to God. To wrap up, don't be fooled by your own ego to dictate what you need to be doing or not, because even if it feels good for you, whatever you're doing, if you're not aware of the presence of God in you, it might be not worth doing after all. Bless you all!

    Colour is important and notifications are designed to catch your attention (hinted at by Bishop Barron at around 21:00 minutes). A bit like how casino slot machines work. Try changing the screen to black and white and watch the detox. Instructions: Settings -> Accessibility -> Display & Text Size then turn "Color Filters" on. That setting is buried deep in there.

    I don't know how married people or Parents do it! As a Bachelor, I am able to leave work go home and eat dinner, then spend time by myself praying the Rosary, reading a great book or scripture and contemplating life. I'm not sure if I'd be able to do that if I were married, or had children at home. I pray for all the Parents and married couples out there, that You'll get a little time to reflect/pray/etc. with God.

    Distractions are junk food for the soul. Like fast food, they are addictive, and we need to consume more and more to fill the hole in the soul that we no longer believe in, because we are too distracted.

    Also, be aware and know that the various marketing departments of various cell phone brands and such devices researched into addiction to gambling and the way a gambling addict responds to the game he plays and applied several of these characteristics to cell phone devices and apps. This is not a game and that "thing" in your pocket or in your hands is not a toy either.

      I think archbishop Vigàno is well intended, but I think bishop Barron would disagree of his approach of public criticism of the Pope. I don't know, I find myself wondering about this frequently... I think that this could lead the little ones to stumble (Mt. 18:6). I personally experienced this... Once I told my sister and mother about the critics and doubts on pope Francis actions and all the Pachamama thing at Amazon Synod. They were shocked. I don't know, I regretted that I did this later, because they think the pope is flawless and a Saint, so it could weakening their faith on the Church.

    What recommended approach can you give about reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church? It's a journey I'd like to take to understand my faith being a revert, but taking the approach of going to my room in private sitting on my desk and reading. Supplements? Sections?

      @ritadoloresmonahanov2669 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Welcome Home !!!! What a great grace to receive that you came to return to the Catholic FAITH!!!! As for the CCC, truly it is not a difficult work to read. Saint Pope John Paul II wanted a catechism that ALL wouod understand so that anyone could learn and appreicate what STILL IS THE OFFICIAL TEACHINGS WITH REGARD TO OUR FAITH and then as to how to live out that Faith in whatever vocation GOD has called you to embrace so that you may become a saint. He was the one who introduced to Saint Peter's in Rome the need to fill the inside and outside with MODERN SAINTS so that people realize what the Second Vatican Council declared "The Universal Call to Holiness!" Many married and lay people were canonized or beautified under his reign. That is why, you really just need to set a specfic time eadh day to spend a specific amount of time, simply, slowly, and attentively reading the CCC. It unfolds in a wonderous way that you will see how " everything falls into place!" as far as the doctrine or dogmas of our Faith truly is the One, True, Faith that Jesus Christ founded and which the Holy Spirit continues to sancitfy and remain with us until Christ comes back again. "Then there will be a new Heaven and a New Earth." as we read in Sacred Scripture.
      May God ; Our Almighty and Loving Father, continue to bless you and may you contine to seek the presence of that "That peace which the world cannot give," God bless Sister RIta Dolores Monahan, OV
