  • Friends, as algorithms promote aggression, we find ourselves surrounded by a culture of contempt within social media. I want to address the toxic, poisonous quality attached to much of the dialogue found online by answering these main questions:
    - What is this culture of contempt?
    - Where does it come from?
    - What do we do about it?

I am so happy I stumbled upon your ministry via Jordan Peterson. I grew up in an evangelical presbyterian church in Colorado Springs. I walked away from that in my early 20’s (I am 66). I have been listening very carefully to your videos. I have felt a clear call to convert to Catholicism and have already made inquiries about RCIA with a local parish. I am genuinely excited to convert!

Is Bishop Barron faithful in the preaching of the Word of God? For example, the Apostle Paul wrote, "Whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10.13)." In direct contradiction, Catholics teach, "Whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord, is baptized Catholic, and partakes of Catholic communion might be saved." If you are a Catholic, you have a choice to obey the Word of God or the false teachings of your church. When you stand before Christ, you won't be able to say, "But they told me this was the true gospel." Remember, those who do not know the Lord will be bound hand and foot and cast into the outer darkness forever. The stakes could not be higher! If I misrepresent the Word of God, please correct my error! I value the truth more than life itself. Correct me from the Word of God and I will be corrected. I write this in the hope that you will know Christ - just by asking! Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

@@kenshiloh Hello nice to know you. Catholics teach Baptism is necessary fr salvation and that is scriptural read Mark 16:15-16, 1Peter 3:19-22. Also regarding the Eucharist, Christ Jesus makes it clear Himself in John 6:53-58. And if course your life must bear fruit and we see St. James and St. Paul speak on that as well. God bless

      @@ejegbavworuemu2129 Hi. Thanks for writing.
According to the common laws of logic, Mark 16.16 does not state that baptism is necessary for salvation, as it is a conditional statement. However, let's suppose you were to prove your point, that baptism is necessary for salvation. What, then, do you do with the words of Paul, "Whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10.13)"? If baptism is necessary to be saved, then Romans 10.13 is not true.
However, no Catholic, so far, will deal respectfully and honestly with me on this issue. The only Catholic with some integrity was a young gal who wrote, "No, it is not true that whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved." She was heretical, but at least she was honest! Other Catholics have claimed that 'calling' is the same as being baptized. Hence, the analogy, "I thought of an old friend so I thought I would give him a baptism (i.e. call)." No, baptism means baptism and call means call! There is no doublespeak in the Bible! As Jesus said, "Let your yes be yes and your no be no."
Suppose I offer to pay you $50 to mow my lawn. Upon completion, I tell you that, for the $50, you must also wash windows. Just as I would be a dishonest business person, so Catholics - and forgive me, but there is no nicer way to put it - are guilty of fraud. That is, if I were to renege on a contract, I could be sued in a court of law. Yet, Paul says, "Whoever preaches a different gospel, let him be accursed." To defraud God, to pervert the gospel, is a serious offense!
The gospel is so pure and dazzling in its purity! Jesus said, "Ask and you shall receive", not 'ask and be baptized...' That is, simply by asking, you can be filled with the Holy Spirit, born again, born into the family of God. Through the Cross, we can have fellowship with Christ - just by asking! Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

@@kenshiloh Hi, thanks for your reply. So sorry about your experience and view about Catholics. I pray for a productive conversation. Ok, so regarding your reference to logic. If I remember logic correctly, the "and" truth table requires that both sides of the argument must be true or be positive (sorry I prefer using numbers). Now, Mark 16:16 states "Whoever believes AND is baptised will be saved..." The use of "and" there according to logic rules requires both actions are must go together and therefore both are necessary for the next statement. If "or"' was used then your point will be valid, but "and" was used. Notice, in the statements following it, it states that those who do not believe will be condemned and baptism was not mentioned. Does that mean it is suddenly not necessary again? No, but that belief is the first step and if you do not believe the question of getting baptized won't even arise at all. So, mentioning baptism here again in the part talking about those who do not believe will be redundant and just stating "belief" will suffice. In summary, they go with each other, you believe and you are baptized into that belief. To be honest really, applying logic even strengthens my argument. So yeah, that is how all the conversion stories in the Acts of the Apostles went From St. Peter preaching in Acts 2:38 to the Eunuch Philip preached to in Acts 8:26- 40 (emphasis on verse 36) to St. Paul conversion story himself in Acts 9:1-19 (emphasis on verse 18) and so. You can read more. So I see no conflict really. That is why in the Catholic Church during the Celebration of Baptism, faith is professed and then the person is baptized. And I further emphasized on the importance of baptism by stating 1Peter 3:19-22. Then regarding that passage in Romans, it actually does not nullify the necessity of Baptism. Like I said belief is the first step and like I stated, Baptism always follows that belief for you are baptized into that belief. If you read further, this passage tallks about how salvation is for all, both Jews and Gentiles. Now in Gal 3:26 downwards we see Paul speaking on the same subject again and mentions baptism. So is he trying to confuse the early Christians? No, he was not making a distinction here but the early Christians would have understood him well as they would know that belief follows baptism. I hope you read further and I pray the Holy Spirit enlightens you. Don't just take a part of scripture and isolate it, it can easily lead to heresy. Thank you and God bless.

@@markhannay7586 My father as a boy once made fun of someone who was "slow" using the vernacular of the day in front of his grandmother. She reproved him by telling him that he would never meet anyone who doesn't know something he does not know.
Humility to me in part is putting my great grandmother's insight into action. God's grace is so superabundant that we can expect to gain truth from the most unexpected of sources: the foolish rather than the wise; those we disagree with instead of our bosom friends. The proper response in such cases is praise and thanksgiving to God for truth we have received and the means by which God has chosen to provide it.
This, I think, was the primary message that Bishop Baron tried to convey in the above message. He is a man who loves Scripture and has disciplined his mind in the study of philosophy and theology. As a parish priest and now a bishop, he has had to confront the reality of sin in his parishioners' and in his own life. His education and experience proves he is no donkey. But if he were a donkey and he provided me truths to help me to safely navigate this life, my proper response is not to beat him. Rather I should get off my saddle and in true humility throw my arms around the neck of the donkey who told me the truth that I so greatly needed to hear.

Think of God as truth, natural law, that which can be opposed and denied for a period of time, building a "house of cards", but will eventually always reassert itself, simply because it is true. Reality/God can be ignored and distorted for a period of time, but only for a period of time. Reality/God is undefeated.
Then ponder what is undeniable truth, natural law. That is God's law.

      @kenshiloh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hi. I was raised by an atheist, but I had God's law written on my heart. In fact, if atheism were true, then how is there any morality at all? First, if we are 'just another life form,' then we do not deserve any special treatment than, say, a mosquito. Yet, if you are to be consistent, you would either have to jail mosquito killers or free murderers.
Yet, I do not not even need to tell you this as God has given you enough faith to believe that He exists. I remember having a conversation with a friend of mine I called 'Rebel.' He said, "I do not know what God thinks of me as I just live my own life." The fact of the matter is that there is an afterlife and God is good. Do you see the problem? God is good, but we are not! For example, have you lied, stolen, or used God's Name in disrespect? If so, then God will judge you as a lying thief and a blasphemer.
Unfit for the perfect social fabric of heaven, you would be cast outside with the other wicked people. Jesus said that there are torturers in hell. He said that it is torment forever. Yet, you were made for friendship with God. It's like, God wanted kids - you! If you choose to ignore Him, He won't pull you into heaven by your ears.
All I did was say, "Is there Jesus? I would like to meet Him!" All heaven filled my soul and it felt like my heart was made out of gold. That was decades ago and, since that time, I have not had even one second of doubt that I know the Lord and am bound for heaven - not even for a second. I write this that you, too, may know Christ. Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

    • @den8863
      @den8863 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@kenshilohRight on. Not only because morality exists, but why anything exists at all. That is my main reason for belief in God. And the revelation of Jesus the Christ is why I believe he is God. Hell is like a son or daughter leaving their home and living in misery alone on the streets. Assaulted by drugs, weather, evil people and loneliness. And by coming home and being welcomed with so much love from their family is like returning back to God. Like the story of the prodigal son in the bible.

Again I am so sorry God bless you and I pray for Christian charity and the love of Christ Jesus to fill our hearts.

Thank you Bishop Barron. Unfortunately this “dark joy” seems to be occurring in most places in society more these days, it’s just magnified on social media. Jesus had this experience in public also. It’s a great time to be a follower of Christ. As the world becomes darker we have the opportunity to shine His light of peace and love even brighter. We are not called to carry the darkness but to forgive and turn it over to God, as Jesus did. He will keep us in perfect peace as we humbly strive to do His will.

Hi. In all respect, we can only shine the light of the Christ if we 'worship in spirit and in truth." For example, the Apostle Paul wrote, "Whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10.13)." In direct contradiction, Catholics teach, "Whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord, is baptized Catholic, and partakes of Catholic communion might be saved." If you are a Catholic, you have a choice to obey the Word of God or the false teachings of your church.

I've always loved you and supported you good Bishop. Always will. My one constructive concern was last summer when the statues and such were being torn down. With the scandals of 18, the mobs of last year, etc in the church, we as the laity were hurting and struggling. I totally get what you mean about the laity taking charge in the public sphere. But we have just been battle wounded and longed to see our leaders out there with us on the front lines. It's for morale and I can't speak enough about how much it's needed. We love and need our fathers / priests / bishops. I'm glad you were out praying the rosary and such and guys like bishop cordileone were doing stuff. So it's not a complaint, merely a longing to have had our dear leaders with us for morale and consolation. The presence of a father is so special and we will always long for that with us some times on the front lines.

I know there's a crowd out there that criticizes bishops every word or lack of word / action. That's not what my comment was about. Thanks for being a good Shepard!

I think we're challenged to take more seriously the moral-spiritual and social effects of social media on the Church, like how film, television, and the printing press caused drastic changes (and scandal) among Christians before. Social media isn't just another way of speaking: It tempts us with an "ethics of outrage" - as if whoever screams loudest is the "better/correct" man - the very tactic that enemies of the Church often use! Let's remember that saints like Abp. Fulton Sheen and St. Maximillian Kolbe stood firm on using new media always for the good and the true. And furthermore, let us keep fraternal love and patience with our fellow sinners.

Dear Bishop Barron, (I Hope you read this)
Thankyou for this Talk from the bottom of my heart and my soul. In Social Media, this is one of the most saddening things for me to see, as a Young Catholic proclaiming and practicing my faith. The amount of Christians (Catholics and Protestants) that are getting persecuted, is increasing day by day in countries around the world. The persecuted are raped, or killed, or tortured, all for believing in Jesus, they do not even have a proper roof over them, and their Church maybe just a hut. But then I see fellow Catholics on the flip side , who despite not much persecution, are fighting and abusing each other so badly. It has always been a matter of sadness in my heart to see this increasing division. I cannot even imagine how much Jesus will be crying seeing this division and hate in the Catholic Church that he founded. I see a lot of fellow Catholics just using Hate towards each other, to prove something that they think is right. I truly believe with all my heart and soul that, this is not the way to prove anything, whether right or wrong, to anyone! Jesus has taught us how to go about doing that. The saints have taught us as well. I understand the frustration of the people on both sides but I truly believe that The Church is the Clergy and the Laity Together! It is not the responsibility just of the Clergy. The Laity have an immense responsibility as well, which sadly for the most part is not being carried out as we all know very well. This Responsibility to Defend Faith, to Evangelise and to work together with the Clergy. I also hope that a lot of the Clergy comes down to the people and reignites the fire in themselves for Jesus. For anyone reading this, I am not generalising everyone. Of course there are Catholics who are on fire for Christ (in both Clergy and Laity) but we know that it is becoming a lesser percentage. There could be a Million reasons for that. But if we can't sit together on the same bench as Catholic brothers and sisters, then we can't solve anything, then we can't stand as a united Catholic Church. So, as part of the Laity, I thank you Bishop Barron for addressing this issue in such an excellent way. I am simply a sinner. Praying for you in my daily prayers. Keep on burning for Christ.
To Proclaim Faith properly on the Social Media, as you said let us take times to pray and fast and limit out times on it, instead of involving ourselves in useless fights in the comment section.
Let us utilize the Social Media for being an example of Christ, for proclaiming, for practicing our Beautiful Faith and not to attack, quarrel, and hating.
"If you do not utilize new media to spread the message of Jesus, to the required degree, Church will have to account for it, in front of the Lord. It is a great gift, that, God has given, to discover truth and spread it around. Your deficiencies and faults should not frighten you. Because the Holy Lord has assured us, that to the end of the world, he will be with us. God with us - Immanuel.”

Bishop, the people have been let down, that is why they are angry and hurt. Please, may the clergy be better spiritual fathers.
    Peace

My friend, I would ask what about the laity, the laity also did not stand to defend. Talking about this as if only the clergy has the responsibility is not right. The Clergy and The Laity, Both make the Church. And I understand the hurt and the anger but using hateful language on social media is as useless as sitting on the couch. We should be united as one. The Laity and The Clergy working Together instead of blaming each other. That is my opinion, my fellow disciple in Christ. May we be all United in the name of Jesus as the Catholic Church to proclaim and practice the Faith, God Bless :)

Wonderful talk, thank you Bishop Barron. Unfortunately, too many Catholic sites display none of the fruits of the Spirit. It is painful to read.
We need to be reminded that love is what conquers everything.

Thanks so much Bishop Barron, I appreciate very much that you tackle these topics and give such good advice. I left Twitter because I was literally sick of what I read, saw and experienced. I was horrified to see fellow Catholics attack each other, and church leaders. And if I spoke in favor of, for example, our Holy Father Pope Francis, I would be attacked on all sides. I appreciate this because it helps me not feel alone with this. Thank you for all of your hard work for us. God bless you.

Hi. I have the difficult task of warning Catholics that they are following a false gospel. Yet, do not believe me! Catholics claim to follow the Bible, but work against the Lord.
