It all started everyone's suspicions when KK said "We have no source material to draw inspiration". And literally EVERYONE went "WTAF are you talking about? EU? Comics? KOTOR? Jedi Academy? THE PREVIOUS FILMS?!!"
Thank god Disney Canon is dogshit because I knew cancelling Legends was a massive mistake as they destroyed 90% of the entire mythos and lore of the franchise
@@1918BARsamThis right here, I think all any Star Wars fan wanted was to pick up where ROTJ left off. I wanted to see Luke rebuild the Jedi Order and the emergence of Grand admiral Thrawn, to think of the movies they could have made but didn’t and now can’t as Carrie Fisher is gone is a travesty.
@@darthvader421 I didn't because I've read the books. Star Wars started life as movies. The movies should be new stories not adaptations of ones many of the potential audience are already familiar with or will soon hear all about if they are adapted. You can never have an "Empire Strikes Back" moment if you already know what's coming. I wasn't even bothered about seeing any of the original characters back. Their tales had been told. Anakin ultimately fulfilled his destiny as the Chosen One. It should have counted for something otherwise what was the point? Disney could have created a whole new saga set years after the EU (OK they might have had to scrap the Legacy comic book series, but that would have been a minimal change) allowing those of us who'd spent years engaging with it to retain it as canon and those who didn't not needing to have done so. They should have given us a fresh original story with a whole new reason why the dark side was rising again. Instead they gave us a shambolic, incoherent mess that completely destroyed the significance of all that had come before. And there was no way they could adapt the post-ROTJ novels. The Thrawn Trilogy is set 5 years later not 30 years and that's one of the few that was written as if was a film trilogy. How would they have set about adapting the 19 novel New Jedi Order? Even they cut it down it's a dark, depressing saga that wouldn't appeal to a lot of folk. Let's be honest, a lot of the EU stories weren't that great. Who'd want to sit through a Swarm War trilogy (or anything based on Troy Denning's garbage)?!
You know what really angers me? If George did not sell the franchise and continued to work on it people would have said the stuff like: "Lucas destroyed his own work he should have sold it to Diney." The only way for people to finally appreciate Lucas's work was for Disney to destroy it.
This will backfire greatly once you tell George just how much money he will make once he sold Star Wars. Face it George Lucas was always a greedy bastard that cared more about making a profit than giving joy and happiness.
You hit the nail on the head. Star Wars was an escape for many of us. Such fantastical works, of planets far, far away and things that we can only imagine. Stories that inspire us and that leave us with hope, that's the true Star Wars in a nutshell. Star Wars is one of the reasons that I was inspired to start writing my own fantasy books too. Hopefully Star Wars itself will find the light eventually and overcome this tragedy
Example : Beforehand, if you didn't like a character like Mara Jade, no one even thought to accuse you of hating real world women for not liking the portrayal of 1 fictional character. Because that assumption is absurd. We've now long existed in an era where not liking some fiction / piece of fiction that others like, makes YOU YOURSELF a real world ' bad ' person.
jeah we had a bunch of dudes that were locked in in the same mileu and we got along very well pretty much, but then corporate greed attacked the entire fandom by insulting the sht out of a beloved universe... we gotta unite like the gamers did vs the woke gamestudios force these idiots into bancruptcy, by stop buying their trash
@@s-nova9254it’s remarkable how long old people can hold grudges. We have the terrible sequels and your ass is still whining about good movies that came out 20 years ago? Yiiiiiiiikes brother get over it 😂
I was 18 when Episode 1 came out. The buildup to it was insane, like a balloon bursting. Who was Darth Maul? Anakin was a slave? Rob Roy and the guy from Trainspotting? I bought the comic book and spoiled myself two days before it released. You're right, Star Wars feels completely different now.
This is exactly the kind of Star Wars mania that modern fans don't know about. The buzz of a new Star Wars film back then was immense. It was global. Huge.
@FalconOnFilm Force Awakens was huge. Say whatever about the film itself, the hype for that first Disney film was insane. Then The Last Jedi ruined it, unfortunately. The fanbase never recovered from the schism that film caused in the community
yep, E. McGregor is forever 'the guy from Trainspotting' for me... He's brilliant actor, but I just can't watch the prequels and stop thinking about 'Trainspotting'. Love the prequels btw 😏the buildup and hype was insane back then. Prequels and LOTR movies were a cultural phenomenon back in the days. Literally everyone was in the SW or LOTR camp, and I mean everyone.
@@Jbtigers5 You're right actually, the anticipation for The Force Awakens would've been huge. But I would argue that Disney have never been able to capture the audience in the same way that Lucas did with merchandising and multi-media projects. If you walked into a toy store, you knew Revenge of the Sith was at the cinemas. The Force Awakens? The Last Jedi? Anything that came after? Not so much.
I’ve seen some people blaming George for selling it, but as I’ve tried to explain to them, absolutely no one could have predicted that Disney would do Star Wars this dirty. I know for a fact people were skeptical about Disney when the sell went down, but this has turned out to be way worse than we could’ve imagined
@@whitegoose2017 what makes it worse is it’s just pandering to. so even if you agree with the agenda, they are pushing and you have two brain cells to rub against each other, you realize oh they’re trying to play me for a sucker. All they care about is stealing money from your wallet they don’t give a shit about anything else.
@@whitegoose2017 I think part of that optimism stemmed from the fact that they were leaving a lot of leeway with Marvel: by 2012, very well-received Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor films had come out, and they were getting close to making the first superhero crossover. From a certain point of view, as Ben Kenobi would say, the choice to sell Star Wars to Disney seemed sensible. In retrospect, it's easy to see how detrimental it was, but at the time who really knew what would become of Star Wars?
In contrast, I was telling people ever since then that this was a hilariously bad idea! There's no optimism or even skepticism that Star Wars would turn out good in the hands of a company that aims to re-educate the world! There's nothing good that comes from that hellhole. Nothing good of SUBSTANCE that is...
Hi ! I’m from Mexico City, I’m a StarWars fan since 1979, and ppl like me here in Mexico love StarWars, but we all knew back in 2012 that the franchise was gonna flop.. like everybody else “we got a bad feeling about it”… for me the only Disney StarWars “thing” that’s worth it is ROGUE ONE… but other than that.. nothing exciting… cheers everyone!!
You liked Rogue One because it was literally copypasted from the story in the Dark Forces / Jedi Knigth game series XD so yeah, anything good they produce is literally just copypasted from some EU story but with new character skins slapped on top.
My Dad loved Star Wars and he shared that love with me. My dad would be rolling over in his grave if he saw what the franchise has become. I am appalled and disgusted at what Disney has done to it. They took something sacred to me and killed it
I feel you. I remember when my old man showed me the first 2 movies and I loved them. That next weekend, he said, "Let's go see how this wraps up," and he took me to see RotJ. He's gone now, so he hasn't had to see this shit. But my god, he would be so disappointed.
My dad is still alive, but his love for star wars is dead. He has a room full with all the "legends" books. It's crazy how many he owns and he was a living library for sw-lore. When "the force awakens" hit the theaters we went there and he was really sad afterwards because nothing was "right". We saw the next two movies together, but there was no joy. His room is collecting dust for many years by now. His love for sw is dead.
@@uncle-bin1750 I actually have quite the little library of sw books myself... Roughly 60-70 books (I os count) (most legends) and I have read every one of them. I inherited after a family friend died.
Tbh I always got the sense that George had some degree of resentment for Star Wars becoming his defining achievement in life. He wanted to create, he wanted to be a Spielberg, a Kubrick, but that's not quite who he was, and Star Wars was so lucrative that it became almost impossible for him to not devote what time and resources he had to continuing it, and I think the hate that the prequels got really kind of was the straw that broke the camel's back. But that's just my opinion.
The most well articulated expression on how real star war fans feel - Couldn't of described my thoughts/ beliefs any better - W/ perfect examples - clear concise but really really expressing how much it hurts the IP and why people are unhappy and you are not making crazy profits when it really is so easy with all the lore/ characters and world. Star wars fans want to spend their hard earned limited money and enjoyment your production but - you are not providing them this. Everyone at Disney should be encouraged to watch this video and respond to the issues he has brought up and communicate this or there wont be that fanbase anymore.
So sad. Many Expanded Universe fans were treated so terribly 10 years ago. We had warned that by seemingly intentionally getting rid of the most avid fans of the franchise, they were going down quite the dark path indeed. It sucks that so many of us were right about that.
I remember how excited I was when they announced the news. All we really have now is a divided fan base and “lore” no one cares about. Theory thanks for being here all this time!
Yeah. There were a ton of people speculating about all or the cool EU stories we were going to get, ans then Disney scrapped the entirety of the EU Canon
@@pablogamberomasson-qg2px I was excited because it was something new to look forward to, I thought Disney at that time was going to try and erase all that prequel hate from years prior, I'm 48, Star Wars is like a brother to me, we grew up together, but we have grown apart.
@pablogamberomasson-qg2px at the time there wasn't really any hope we were ever going to get a 7-8-9 trilogy under lucas. But back then people expected a sequal trilogy to show the thrawn trilogy, remnant, possibly the reborn emperor (ironically met a lot of the same criticism back in the day as disney ep9 for undermining Luke's arc), the rebuilt jedi temple, vong invasion, eclipse, galaxy gun, Darth caedus etc etc. All of that hope was dashed when Disney announced they were more or less resetting the Canon outside of the 6 og films and the clone wars
For over 30 years George Lucas was the guardian of well written stores, and characters in the old star wars galaxy. Before the dark times. Before Disney.
I thought is was going to good hands - me and my friends were both at different sides - “ yea this is great disney will take good care of it” others were like disney is too cute and they will OD - anyway results are what they are they destroyed it 😢 Damn
@@ganggang3788 it doesn't change the fact that selling is a mistake. And back then Prequels did had fans that weren't children who grew on TCW and prequels were essentially "Clone Wars era" For them.
First of all, we met at the Pasadena film festival in March 2019. I was in LA for film school at the time and told you about my desire to make several Star Wars fan films. Fast forward to today and any attempt I’ve made in the “mainstream industry” has either not worked out or not been worth it. But any attempt I’ve made as an independent writer-director-producer has been very successful. Maybe not in terms of getting my career off the ground or making money, but my most recent project has been selected by, nominated by, or awarded in over a dozen film festivals all around the world. What you’re saying about comparing Lucas to Disney is the same with me. I want to remain completely independent as a filmmaker and one day hand the reins off to someone like Dave Filoni or John Favreau who will respect and carry on what I started. Love what you do and can’t wait to see episodes 2 and 3!
It broke my heart when George sold out to "The White Slavers" at Disney. I knew they would undermine his vision. However, even with my cynical opinion of Disney Corporation, I didn't imagine they would literally lock him out of Lucasfilms and actively seek to retcon his magnum opus, Star Wars. For most of the fans of George Lucas and his many iconic franchises, October 30, 2012 is a day that lives in infamy.
It's already changed forever. They have spent 10+ years destroying the franchise. It will be a permanent stain that can't be undone. Star wars like the MCU will forever just be a joke now.
The one and only exception to this otherwise dead disney carcass, is Rogue One. That is the still-lone-standing diamond in the rough of Star Wars post-Disney.
Star wars being sold right after Galaxies shut down, along with 1313 getting canned was easily the darkest time as a star wars fan, up until Disney made it worse
Man I’m still sad about 1313 as I was so looking forward to it. Pre 2012 I was all about Star Wars, now that love is very diminished and when I think about it I do feel a bit sad that I lost that passion.

It's fascinating to see how content creation evolves - the algorithm can really shape the direction we take, sometimes without us even realizing it. The irony is that we're all trying to preserve what we love about Star Wars, even if we sometimes lose sight of that along the way. Remember when you rated TROS 9/10 because you were genuinely excited about the possibilities? That pure love for storytelling was infectious! 🤔 Would love to see more of those deep-dive lore videos again. Funny you should say that. Remember at the end of Fanboys, when of the guys said "What if this is bad?" as a joke at the negative reception for the Phantom Menace just as that movie began? I no joke said that as joke/reference to Fanboys just before Force Awakens started. Too bad I didn't realize how true that quote became.

@@AlexTheKiller1297At one point, he did. See his comment comparing Disney to "white slavers". But I think he kinda just gave up, realized he signed away his rights to complain, and just accepted it was now nothing but passive income for him and his family. George did make some comments that were borderline critical at some movie festival I think last year in the spring, pretty sure even SWT did a video on it at the time, but he won't step out of line again and risk hurting the brand. Part of the sale heavily invested him in Disney stock.
I can’t get my head around how a studio can be so insanely out of touch with their audience, or what made the IPs they invested in so popular in the 1st place. I think there is a cultural shift happening that is impacting media, Hollywood and these ideological echo chambers that have produced so many failed and divisive projects. Hopefully we will start to see things turn around such that the quality of stories takes precedence over whatever lackluster things they have been putting out and losing money/fans over. Until then… I can wait
"Have you heard the tragedy of Darth Lucas the Wise? He trusted Disney to tell his story rather than pushing their own crap, yet he hired Kathleen Kennedy, ironic."
Sad thing is, Colin Trevorrow's Episode IX "Dual of the Fates" couldve actually salvaged something from the sequels. Actually respected what came before, did interesting things with what TLJ left him. Tied into freaking Mortis. Made Kylo Ren a badass. No wonder KK tossed it out.
I remember in 2013, I read a story that after the buy out. There were like Marshall arts schools(Super small Businesses) in the US that used Names from Star wars in their products, Like Lightsaber school. They had been using them for 30 years without any problem from Lucusfilm and would not have affected them at all. Disney Decided to go after these people when the got the rights. That was the moment I knew Star Wars was dead. My friends with the stupid "In JJ with trust" shirts (Which I still can NOT believe existed in 2014) were like give it a chance. I knew it was over. I knew what it would become.
I just wish George could take a page out of his friend Francis Ford Coppola's book, and make something entirely new, something reminiscent of old stuff that he watched as a youth again. I'm certain that George like his friend still has some good stories to tell, if only he got a spark of inspiration and talked with Coppola so he could cheer him on for a new project.
“I sold it to the white slavers” apparently they came down hard on him for that, I miss when actors or directors were allowed to make similar comments without threat of being sued
While there was always a sense of cautious optimism, the amount of excitement and energy that there was after 2012 was unreal. After a decade of no films/major projects, it felt like Star Wars was back. Fast forward to now, where the franchise is a husk, overshadowed by Marvel, and the fans completely apathetic. Apathy is death...
“Comic book discussions” Bro you nailed that! That literally was why I watched your channel bro! For the lore and your well put together videos on it. Especially like your what if series. Now unfortunately i come on here grieve to rage with you lol. So glad you weren’t onboard with the direction disney was taking star wars. One of the reasons why im still subscribed bro.
Never been this early. But what George Lucas has accomplished with film is insane. He’s basically the most successful independent filmmaker ever. People forget that Empire all the way to RoTS are indie movies. I’d also like to point out American Graffiti and THX 1138 are great movies he’s made as well. GL is the man!
Personally, I think George Lucas’ biggest mistake is actually having Kathleen Kennedy as CEO. I actually enjoy a lot of Disney Star Wars, but I also agree that they could be doing so much better. There were so many missed opportunities that are impossible to ignore. Why didn’t Kenobi fight the Inquisitors in his show? Why did they discontinue Legends instead of continuing it as an alternative timeline? Why didn’t Kathleen Kennedy study Star Wars Legends after the fan backlash about “no source material?” I didn’t grow up with Legends, but I find its stories much better than a couple of the Canon stories we got. For starters, the Darth Plagueis novel’s better than The Acolyte, the Legacy of the Force novels have a much bigger & better Skywalker family, & The Fate of the Jedi novels have Abeloth, a perfect villain for a sequel trilogy. I still like Disney Star Wars, such as Rogue One, Andor, the Darth Vader comics, and so on, but it’s just so disappointing that they abandoned the stories of a 40 year old continuity.
your grandfather sounds like a very wise man. hopefully we can get back to the way things were. sad to see something you love just completely change and not make sense anymore. just gotta keep having hope.
When I heard palps say "fulfil your destiny" in your intro this time I thought to myself, "His destiny is to eventually direct an actual canon star wars movie."
I’d like to point out- I don’t think we should advocate for getting rid of everyone in Lucasfilm. There are still a lot of talented folks there, many of which worked under Lucas himself. There are some people that need to go- and I also think George needs to have more involvement (if he’s willing).
"The Cool Kid" metaphor, I feel is spot-on. I've been saying for years that the people that hated Star Wars, comics & everything else is now running and destroying it.
The argonance to think they could throw away George's treatments thinking they could do better. The first line is literally a meta dig at the prequels however now all that merchandise money is coming from product around the prequels
According to google it would cost somewhere between $10B - $20B to buy Star Wars today. SWT has 3.3M subscribers. So if each subscriber bought around 12 Theory Sabers for roughly $500 each, that would be approximately $20B if my math is correct. So Theory can buy Star Wars and balance will finally be restored. MAKE IT HAPPEN!
October 31st 2012: I feel a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.
Just finished reading through the original sequel books. What's truly depressing is that everything Disney uprooted to make their "inclusive" version already held their "inclusive" ideas but written in ways that held true to the stories instead of making the stories revolve around those ideas. From the only female imperial admiral, Dallah, having to use her mind to overcome imperial sexism. To Anakins granddaughter having to take up his mantle to put the resurgence of the sith down. To the penultimate villain, of the entire timeline, and reason behind the star wars, being a horrifying female eldritch entity. Disney was literally handed the golden goose, and promptly plucked its feathers and tried to pawn it off as a phoenix.
Abeloth story was definitely a prophecy about Kathleen 😂 Someone had a vision of the future. The books are even cut short and Abeloth is just temporarily defeated 😮
Lucasfilm: *Gets a really good script from a competent writer* "Nice we love it. We just need to take out all the good parts." Writer: "Um, I think you mean the bad parts." Lucasfilm: "I know what I said!"
It's the usual "we can do it better than the originals, so let's disregard them completely" mentality. Same thing happened with Halo, another popular sci-fi series I loved. The devs at 343 were not even allowed to talk about the original Bungie games. Like seriously?
Here’s my take: In my opinion, after George Lucas’s massive success with the original Star Wars trilogy, he reached a point where he didn’t have to take feedback from anyone. What made the original trilogy so great was that he had a team willing to challenge and refine his ideas. Without that pushback, we got the special editions and the prequels. To be fair, there were hints of this dynamic starting to show in Return of the Jedi.
You do realize that GL had people constantly pushing and asking him when he made the prequels right? It was explicitly stated in interviews that he didn't have a team of "yes men" unlike the sequels which Rian had the gall to shoot down changes Mark Hamill wanted when he made the prequels. He had people like Hayden asking if he could be in the Darth Vader suit until GL finally said yes, and telling him that "this is fine, but what if we did this instead" and made certain changes. GL only was strict was because he was passionate about Star Wars which was his baby.
Actually it wasn't that way, he started with "a point where he didn’t have to take feedback" from the very begining, that is the reason he didn't direct Empire and Jedi because he wanted to control everything better, and not repeat the frustration he experienced with A New Hope, thats why he hired his friends to help him with the directing of the next two, "help him", to make made the movies exactly as he wanted, controlling every detail, at least as far as the available technology allowed him to do so.
Ever since I went on opening day of the Force Awakens in Paris in Dec. 2015, I left the theatre absolutely sad. I knew it was over. People refused to listen, and were blinded by the hype "give it time!!!" they all said..but no. Star Wars died in 2012.
I'd recognized Rey as looking like a JJ Abrams Mary Sue in the trailers... so I waited for my brother to give the word on it. His verdict was that she did seem like a Mary Sue, such as when she was a whizz with the Falcon, but that people online were wondering if it was because she was related to a key person or similar. So I thought I'd just wait to see how things played out. Still waiting, lol.
Yeah I never understood the enthusiasm for The Force Awakens. I walked out knowing I'd just watched a really poor remake of A New Hope with a few bits from the other OT movies thrown in. The lack of originality was staggering. The only possible saving grace was the "mystery boxes" Abrams inevitably threw in, but I knew they wouldn't lead anywhere because they never do. How there are still folk who haven't cottoned on to this charlatan is beyond me. Of course Johnson then came along and threw away what little set up there was, quite literally in the case of Luke's lightsaber, and that was it. That moment was the final nail in the coffin.
1:28 I'm tired of many fans just glossing over The Force Awakens as if it didn't start this entire mess. Luke Skywalker was not even in TFA.*TFA* was the film that completely undid Vader's sacrifice and the work of Luke and the Alliance. TFA did not "set up a better sequel," it did nothing and TLJ is the sequel TFA deserved. The foundation of the trilogy sets the direction of the rest, and TFA *locked* 8 and 9 into a terribly written hole and deserves more criticism than both other films combined.
I agree that it needs more criticism than that, but the first half (until Han cameo shows up) actually has a lot of promise in characters and tone. While TLJ is just a dumpster fire vanity project jumping from one offensive and illogical idea to the next, and 9 is an AI written studio product, with nothing even remotely good, so your last line is just ridiculous.
@@whade62000 The only promise was the intro with Finn, and they didn't even do anything with that. Sure 9 is the worst film of the trilogy but by that point no one cared anymore. 7 did more damage to the universe
7 did damage but it showed reasonable promise at first ngl, I was hopeful till I got to episode 8 where I dropped it essentially. I still went and watched episode 8 and 9 but I had my standards severely lowered.
@@RockettRevengerr 7 Did nothing after the Finn intro. Luke wasn't in it, here is The Empire but not The Empire, here is the Death Star but not the Death Star, Here's Han and Leia but their development was just undone, etc etc. "A good question, for another time" sums up 7 perfectly. A film is not good because the film after it was supposed to be good
I agree with everything you said. Myself, I am trying to be objective regarding Star Wars in general and Boba Fett in particular. Being a member of a Lucas-acknowledged Mandalorian costuming club, I live a little on the edge, so to speak. But I think it is worth risking reminding folks there that without Boba Fett, there would be no other Mandalorians - not even Jango Fett (although I assume he lived for a long time before he actually appeared in the back of George Lucas's head). It is so very sad that Disney had to bring down every George Lucas character - why? They really should have created a nice closure and put a beautiful bow on top. Hand over the torch in a meaningful and not hurtful manner. But no, we had to watch the accident happen - and it has not ended yet. Okay, I will try to remain hopeful that things might change at Lucasfilm. But I always speak up for the things I love - in a meaningful and not hurtful manner.
Disney should hire Christopher Nolan for a star wars Trilogy. He has tremendous respect for George and Star Wars. I believe he would launch star wars into it's renaissance phase.
Part of me thinks he sold to Disney after spending a decade thinking about the best way to get back at the people who hate the prequels. I can just imagine him walking to his office every day swearing under his breath "I'll show those fuckers."
Nah, he was already preparing to make then next star wars trilogy before he was offered the deal with the devil. He was told that he was "getting old" and what would happen to star wars when he's gone. They just conned him into feeling old.
George Lucas was a CREATIVE genius. but lets not forget that he had lots of people argue with him about his vision's execution in the original trilogy leading to an overall, if not COMPLETELY, quality experience.
Long time follower. We've rarely agreed. But I have always had great respect for you, your knowledge and positive view. Mind you, I only consider EP 4-6 Star Wars. But I have always continued to watch what you have created. Made me forget the perversions SW has been through. Your creation Vader I've watched countless times, it gave me hope. I find your views very well thought through and balanced, spoken from a true fan, with love and disappointment in your voice. I feel with you bro
I'm not that sympathetic towards Lucas about SW. To me Lucas lost creative interest in his baby decades ago. But it was so profitable and the pressure of hundreds of millions of fans he half heartedly kept it going. I imagine when he sold it off he felt great relief. I'm sure he's irritated that Disney has destroyed his ip but he long lost his passion so that is way he has largely kept quiet.
This is why people warn you against "selling out". George didn't need the money. He was already a billionaire. Now Disney has ruined the legacy of his life's work. He's unfortunately getting to witness it while he's still alive. His worst nightmare.
I love it how you conveniently leave out the hate and harassment George and the prequel cast recieved from the "fans". Disney Star Wars is exactly what the fans deserved.
@@ExecutiveSonda I didn't "leave out" anything. The fans hate didn't force George to sell his company. He did it because he wanted the $4 Billion. The fans have been hating on Kathleen Kennedy for years and she's yet to be fired or replaced. These people do what they want to do. The fans don't matter to them.
Bros acting like he knows what George is thinking, he's probably on some beach in Hawaii drinking a Arnold Palmer meanwhile we are all pissy about a dead franchise 😂
@JeffPenaify No, it wasn't. The EU was not considered by George Lucas pushing Star Wars forward. When writing The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, they didn't care about the "lore" established by Marvel Comics. When writing the prequel trilogy, George didn't care about a decade of Expanded Universe by WestEndGames, BantamBooks and DarkHorse. When creating The Clone Wars (2008 -) George didn't care about the years of Clone Wars continuity established by DelRey, DarkHorse and LucasArts. Georges projects in Star Wars were always something that revolutionized the IP, that broke parts of what came before. He never let "lore" or the past limit his imagination. You people, rewriting history by declaring that the Expanded Universe had any meaning for George Lucas, have no idea how Star Wars works, have no idea of the creative process of George Lucas, have no idea what renewed and pushed foreward the IP for decades. Just shut up.
I feel your pain. The downfall began when Lucas modifed the originals and revoked the original theatrical releases. We are all reaping what he sowed on that one.
You took the words right out of my head! Unfortunately, Disney cares more about pandering to DEI circles than providing quality entertainment. I'm surprised that the board at Disney hasn't let Iger go at this point. I mean, the recent net losses are incredibly horrid, as well as the viewership numbers. You're either in it to make money or in it to project an ideology; you can't have both.
I disagree with the "cool kids taking it over and telling us how we're supposed to feel." I think it's a combination of people who want to make make a name for themselves, need attention, and just flat out don't know/understand the soul of Star Wars. Even the "cool kids" are disgusted with the state of Star Wars. The people who are now in charge are something else entirely. They're not the "cool kids," not the nerds, and not even the casual fans. They're something far worse. The problem with Star Wars, video games, fictional TV shows, and even movies, is no respect for the Original IP's. It was the original IP's that started the fan bases by creating a working formula. What's the phrase? "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!" I absolutely love your channel Theory. Keep up the awesome work!! You said you wanted fans to be more vocal. We'll, I've been doing my part by being vocal on "Screen Rant." Those writers need to seriously understand what they're talking about or stop talking all together.
In order to see any change, we need to continue to boycott Disney. We need to stop rewarding bad behavior with our money. That's the loudest message we can ever give.
Remember Star Wars Lessons. The Empire may have won for now, but Hope will see the truth and the just win the long war. We are in hiding, scattered, but a New Hope shall come and the Return of Star Wars shall come.
They should give total creative control back to George, and pay him to make Star Wars, but keep all the money Star Wars would make, from a business point of view.
I think George was angry with the fan reaction to the prequels, and feared ever touching the property again for that reason. So selling it was really his only choice. To be fair, while the sequel trilogy was horrible, Obiwan was somehow worse, Boba Fett is awful, and the Acolyte is unwatchable, Andor is possibly the best Star Wars since Empire Strikes Back, and Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2 were both thoroughly excellent. So Disney may have ruined Star Wars, they have also shown the ability to actually make good Star Wars too, so, I'm torn.
8:25 they absolutely didn’t want ANY of the original cast to make way for their crap but I WILL say this: Harrison Ford wanted George Lucas to kill off Han Solo way back when they were making empire strikes back and I’m pretty sure one of the only reasons he did force awakens was because they finally gave him that wish 😅
We will never experience George’s sequel trilogy which is sad, but remember the internet hated George back in 2012, this is partly the fan bases fault.

Thank god Disney Canon is dogshit because I knew cancelling Legends was a massive mistake as they destroyed 90% of the entire mythos and lore of the franchise
The dumbest decision was to destroy Luke's order instead of building the sequels upon it. How dumb could KK's team be to do such a thing?

This is exactly the kind of Star Wars mania that modern fans don't know about. The buzz of a new Star Wars film back then was immense. It was global. Huge.
@FalconOnFilm Force Awakens was huge. Say whatever about the film itself, the hype for that first Disney film was insane.

American Graffiti success brought about Happy Days
Personally, I think George Lucas’ biggest mistake is actually having Kathleen Kennedy as CEO. I actually enjoy a lot of Disney Star Wars, but I also agree that they could be doing so much better. There were so many missed opportunities that are impossible to ignore. Why didn’t Kenobi fight the Inquisitors in his show? Why did they discontinue Legends instead of continuing it as an alternative timeline? Why didn’t Kathleen Kennedy study Star Wars Legends after the fan backlash about “no source material?”
I didn’t grow up with Legends, but I find its stories much better than a couple of the Canon stories we got.

The argonance to think they could throw away George's treatments thinking they could do better. The first line is literally a meta dig at the prequels however now all that merchandise money is coming from product around the prequels
The prequels are actually genuinely beloved by most of the fanbase. Even defenders only think the acting was bad, not the story
Star Wars sold for 4.05 Billion, poor George.
The thing with Daala is that she was the worst Star Wars villain *ever*, first female Imperial admiral or no.
Lucasfilm: *Gets a really good script from a competent writer* "Nice we love it. We just need to take out all the good parts."
Writer: "Um, I think you mean the bad parts."
Lucasfilm: "I know what I said!"
The fact that was 12 years ago makes me feel so old, wow, time sure does fly by...
It's the usual "we can do it better than the originals, so let's disregard them completely" mentality. Same thing happened with Halo, another popular sci-fi series I loved. The devs at 343 were not even allowed to talk about the original Bungie games. Like seriously?
Here’s my take:
In my opinion, after George Lucas’s massive success with the original Star Wars trilogy, he reached a point where he didn’t have to take feedback from anyone. What made the original trilogy so great was that he had a team willing to challenge and refine his ideas. Without that pushback, we got the special editions and the prequels. To be fair, there were hints of this dynamic starting to show in Return of the Jedi.
Just to add: A really talented team of individuals including Frances Ford Coppola.
The editors saved the original.
@@chrisval04 Nope.
He was controlling because he resented the studios for ruining his baby THX-1138.
Ever since I went on opening day of the Force Awakens in Paris in Dec. 2015, I left the theatre absolutely sad. I knew it was over. People refused to listen, and were blinded by the hype "give it time!!!" they all said..but no. Star Wars died in 2012.
And Kathleen must have dirt on everybody in Hollywood because no way she's still there after all this if she didn't
Star Wars died for me 10 minutes into TFA. Then I knew that it's not a continuation but an abomination.
That moment was the final nail in the coffin.
the Miyan Calander was right about 2012.. just not about the world ending but the end of Star Wars
They confused themselves with the shortform 'IP', KK Lucasfilm thought it meant "Identity Politics"
Disney should hire Christopher Nolan for a star wars Trilogy. He has tremendous respect for George and Star Wars. I believe he would launch star wars into it's renaissance phase.
Why? So they can tell him how not to make a good film?
The issue isn't the director. The problem is upper management at Disney and Lucasfilm, who feel the need to stick their nose into everything.
@@Mr.Foxhathe would be writing it as well in this hypothetical
Lol you think Disney wants someone who knows what he's doing
Why do you think he lost his passion?
@@thelastronin7145 Because Disney sucked everything out of it with what they done and people kept bashing the prequels
This is why people warn you against "selling out". George didn't need the money. He was already a billionaire. Now Disney has ruined the legacy of his life's work. He's unfortunately getting to witness it while he's still alive. His worst nightmare.
You'd be surprised...people with money like that only want one thing, more money. It's hard to believe but it's true.
He gave the money to charity, give him a break.
Bros acting like he knows what George is thinking, he's probably on some beach in Hawaii drinking a Arnold Palmer meanwhile we are all pissy about a dead franchise 😂
They neglected the EU but still profit off of it by selling legends
In retrospect that makes great cents, "Hey kids do you like Star Wars before Disney? Cool, you can buy Legends!"
@@GLJosh Lol exactly. Them decanonizing it means they won't have to ruin beloved characters or the story in the timeframe of legends
@@lapplandkun9273The EU was never canon under George Lucas.
@@marcfie7095yes it was
@JeffPenaify No, it wasn't.
Couldn’t have said it better you summarize how the true fans feel, thank you for using your platform for it since your voice matters!
I feel your pain. The downfall began when Lucas modifed the originals and revoked the original theatrical releases. We are all reaping what he sowed on that one.
The force ghost of the George Lucas' Star Wars still lives within fans hearts. Disney will never have that.
At this point I feel like picking and choosing which parts you consider canon is the way to go
I disagree with the "cool kids taking it over and telling us how we're supposed to feel." I think it's a combination of people who want to make make a name for themselves, need attention, and just flat out don't know/understand the soul of Star Wars.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!"
I absolutely love your channel Theory. Keep up the awesome work!! You said you wanted fans to be more vocal. We'll, I've been doing my part by being vocal on "Screen Rant." Those writers need to seriously understand what they're talking about or stop talking all together.
I’d love to hear, no holds barred and not a diplomatic answer, if (or how much) he regrets selling to Disney.
It’s probably eating him
Disney misunderstood the hope thing and they thought its good enough if people leave the thinking, “i hope the next one won’t suck this bad”
He defended these people when he spoke up against the attempted shareholder coup by Nelson Peltz back in April.
I'd like to remind you that when there was a chance of changing the menagement at Disney, George supported Bob Iger.
They should just give the rights back to George
They should give total creative control back to George, and pay him to make Star Wars, but keep all the money Star Wars would make, from a business point of view.
Stephen Spielberg and James Cameron need to buy Disney.
No. Terrible idea.
@@ohsweetmysteryI disagree. It would be great. Spielberg is great mates with George and would get him involved.
Poor Theory... still holding out hope. To mix ips, "It's dead Jim."
To him Reach still stands
