  • In this video, Matt Leete from Bribar Table Tennis explains how to generate more speed and spin when playing forehand and backhand topspin strokes.
Matt demonstrates his topspin technique at both a controlled pace and then at a faster pace.
There is plenty of slow motion footage so you can see exactly how Matt executes his topspin shots.
When competing, Matt was a top 20 player in England.

Wow, love this video. Great explanation and demonstrations. Also, slowing down the video to make the point was excellent.

Fantastic video! Really good. I love the comparison of the small and big swing as it really explains the dynamics of the swing. I was hoping for a forhand topspin video soon but it was an added bonus getting backhand as well!
Keep up the great content 🫡🫡

Hey Tom, been greatly enjoying your tutorials and advice recently. I've just recently started playing table tennis and don't have any experienced players to train/practice with. Any advice on how to get better with no experienced players to play with?

If you have access to an Oculus then the game Eleven VR is a great place to practice. It is very realistic and I have found improvement in my IRL game from playing in VR!!!

Just playing with anyone is likely to improve your standard a little bit. But to really improve you ideally need to find others who are interested in improving like yourself. @mrcadoia makes some good suggestions in his comment. Are there any clubs near you that you could join?

One thing he did not mention in the forehand fast top-spin was that the elbow is always above or at the same level as the paddle. Never below. That gives you more control and better results.

Hi Tom, I’m having trouble trying to do Forehand and Backhand Drives and just ball control in general. I’ve seen your videos and other coaches’ videos as well but when I play it feels different somehow. I’m definitely doing a mistake and I was wondering if you can make a video outlining mistakes that players do when hitting the ball and how we can fix it. I’m starting to play Table Tennis a lot more seriously in my college’s table tennis club and I want to be able to play on the same level as the good players in that club.

I use JOOLA Dynaryz AGR rubber on both BH and FH bribartt.co.uk/product/joola-dynaryz-agr-table-tennis-rubber/?ref=8204. The rubber is fast, plenty of spin, great for counter topspin - highly recommend.

As a further bonus I would have appreciated some extra tips to open the play under heavy backspin (both forehand and backhand side).
In this video everything seems too easy, but when you have to attack with topspin after a heavy backspin (short or long) that could make the difference between victory and defeat.
