Derecho & Damage At Elmhurst (Raw Clips)

  • I only cut out the spots where the window fogged up.....
    This starts out by railroad tracks at the Myrtle Avenue grade crossing (where the lumber yard used to be). I was there for the storm sirens and the first gusts of wind and then the rain. The beginning shows the sky to the west, and as time moves on, the storm moved in. I drove around town and recorded from the dash of the car and I stopped in several places. From my point of view, damage seemed to be mostly south of downtown and north of Madison. The neighborhoods along the Illinois Prairie Path got really shredded. The area surrounding the old Chicago Great Western Railroad Station at The Prairie Path, looked as if a tornado went through!

      I was between the two area cells. A small tornado blew east northeast across Lombard and then died down as it continued through north Elmhurst and Bensenville. To the south of me, the storm made hash out of the neighborhoods along the Prairie Path east of York. (Far south Elmhurst seemed untouched compared to the rest of town).

      Spent every summer from birth to 2016 there. I'm suprised they have the infamous yellow fire trucks operational. They were phasing them out when I left. My grandparents lived there from 1970-2016 and I lived there before we moved to Rochelle when I was 1 year old in 2003. They always said the storms will usually stay south of valette or pull north of north Ave. That zone in-between usually stayed out of the worst.

      Sorry about that. I made the video for my senior friends who can't get out but who have lived here all theirs lives. I've been here for many decades and I get tunnel vision when driving around town, most of the time I don't even think of street names as I drive. Additionally, I'm a old school Historian who prefers not to interject into the audiences view. As to the storm. At fourteen minutes the trees are shaking pretty good! Are you watching on a phone? I view and edit on a wide screen and the cloud formations and tree shaking show up much better. Thank-You for viewing and commenting!

    • @ipfeldspar
      @ipfeldspar  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's why you took the time to leave a comment? Where is any claim, in this video, that the damage is superior to any other storm? This is about a storm that hit Elmhurst Illinois. The first fifteen minutes are in real time and one can discern the front moving through. The tail end of the video shows the knocked down trees, and damaged property in the heart of town. For a video that shows a local event, it is quite good. But if you get off on death and destruction, this is not the place to be. In any case, thank-you for viewing and commenting.

    • @scenicdepictionsofchicagolife

      Sarah: Some areas got hit an order of magnitude harder. In portage park the power was out for days and trees blocked streets for over 24 hours. I think about 10-20 percent of homes were damaged by the winds and debris. Tons of hail damage too and a few local tornadoes. Derecho strom's are no joke. Trust me, you be shitting your self had you been walking around during the storm that day. It was wild. Weren't no drizzle.

      It's more fun to watch when all the really old guys are in the room. They'll reference places that have been gone for fifty years. However, when they saw the damage, they were pretty horrified. One of these guys used to live a block from that corner. The driving is nothing more than a tour, but is does allow for a sense of things in real time.

      I think were without power for a week. A good friend had no storm damage around the house, but a few doors down, a tree took out a electric pole that had a important transformer. The friend had no power for a few days. The emergency responders tried to cover as much area as they could, but sometimes that meant they could only mark the downed line and hope that no one one goes out for bar-b-que. Thank-You for viewing and Commenting...!!!

    TF are you doing, driving back and forth, starting and stopping, speeding down a 25? What is this??? I'm sitting it out but Idk why. Could've left out the first 13 minutes. Couldn't detect the velocity with the vehicle moving. Next time, stay still.

    • @ipfeldspar
      @ipfeldspar  ปีที่แล้ว

      It was made for a specific group of Elmhurst oldtimers who are housebound. They like all the extra content. Also, I prefer to do extended videos that allow the audience to watch with their own eyes and interpret witout a narrators voice intruding. The first ten minutes gets the warning sirens and a number of cloud variations. At minute 11:00 we start to get the wind and by minute fifteen most of the storm has passed over. Those first few passes around the downtown happened as I wanted to pull out and shoot the entire sky, My widescreen shows quite a bit of the clouds as they move over town. Also, the storm split just before getting to Elmhurst (or maybe two different cells) one storm went north and the other cut across the middle of town. Thank-You for viewing and commenting!

      Sirens can go off for winds 70+ mph and 2”+ hail, not just tornado warnings. They’re called “OUTDOOR WARNING” sirens for a reason, not tornado sirens.

    • @ipfeldspar
      @ipfeldspar  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was a minor tornado that started over Downtown Lombard and then started to go west, northwest. It tore up a lot of trees around the neighborhood where the old CGW used to cross the CNW. That storm went up towards Bensenville, where it died. A different part of the storm slammed mid-Elmhurst near York and the Prairie Path. Oh, I never call them storm or tornado warnings. I always say the "air raid sirens" If folks don't like that, then they can go duck and cover.

    • @austinmccoy9743
      @austinmccoy9743 2 ปีที่แล้ว
