  • The History Digger discusses his impression of the Nokta Makro Simplex compared to his new Minelab Equinox 800 metal detector. He highlights some of the outstanding features of both metal detectors including features like pinpointing, vibration mode, Multi-IQ, integrated lights and as well as the pros and cons of detector shafts and price. He completes a box opening of the Minelab Equinox 800 and discusses some of the differences between the Equinox 600 vs. the Equinox 800. He also discusses an after market carbon shaft called the Tele-Knox by Detecting Innovations. This is a great video for someone wanting to compare and understand some of the features of these two great detectors!

Thanks for the detector review. I've been undecided with Minelab and seems like every other year they innovate some new technology. They're are a good company, but seem top heavy on the price and I just don't want to buy two detectors even though I hit the beach or the deserts on vacation. The Simplex looks interesting and I found out Nokta also makes a multi frequency (5khz, 14khz, 20khz) detector with the Anfibio series.

I have a Whites V3i, a CTX-3030, and an Equinox 800, and still was tempted into buying a Simplex. At first I wasn’t afraid to get the Equinox wet until I started to see so many breaches and coil ear snaps. The Simplex is a machine I’m not afraid to dunk and I love the vibrate and built in light features. It’s also nice to have at least one dedicated single frequency machine where everything is tuned to that particular frequency. Then there’s the ecosystem Nokta Makro is building. The Simplex works with the wireless headphones which also connects to the pulse Dive which also converts to a diving loop.

I wanted a decent, user friendly machine and the Simplex plus exceeded my expectations. What a way to get started. I may down the road look at other technology more sophisticated. I feel the Simplex plus is a great way to start and build a foundation of how to use a metal detector.

I bought the 800 a year ago I love it. I had no issue with any shaft wobble the whole shaft is tight. There was a known issue to mine lab that the first few batches of the equinox series had bad cam locks. They since fixed that problem. However the detector is still nose heavy so however I did purchase complete shaft. I got it from Steve’s detector rods with a counter weight and that solved that problem

I had to get my 800 adjusting shaft replaced due to the carbon shaft pin wearing out the hole around it. The thing I really love about my 800 is that it’s so quiet!!! I had an ATPro and it was to much sensory input (sound) for me to interpret. It was hard for me to decipher all the sounds. Most people it doesn’t bother but for me it was so much input. ATPro is a good machine and I recommend it, but I like the quietness of the Equinox 800.
If you’re getting a beginner machine I always recommend a Simplex+. You can’t get the features in any machine for that cost. I’ve only seen good reviews.

      @TheHistoryDigger1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have both. I have owned the Equinox 800 since it came out, and its by far the best detector Ive ever owned and I have owned etrac, ctx, at pro ,t2, deus etc etc etc. I picked up a Simplex to have a backup water machine for cheap, and I have to say, its a dang good detector period, and especially for the price. Its not comparable to the Equinox by far, in my opinion, as the Equinox blows it away for vid stability and accuracy at depth and in mineralized soils, heavy iron and wet salt sand. That being said, the Simplex is less than half the cost of the 800, and it is built very well, and works very well, and will definitely find good things. I think you will dig more junk with it if you dont want to miss deep coins and relics, as the id is just a guess beyond 8 inches where the Equinox is rock solid at 10+ inches. But you pay for that extra umph. I will say one of my favorite things about the Simplex is that I bought the pusledive and using it as a pinpointer it will sync with the Simplex headphones and when you switch on the pp the audio comes through the headset, absolutely BRILLIANT!! The Simplex does suffer from shaft wobble with the stock coil, but there are fixes for that. All in all I would say the Simplex is a great value for the money. The Equinox 800 is the machine you want if you are a hardcore, multiple times a week hunter.

I own both as well. I also find the NOX800 a more solid feeling machine. There is a noticeable swing flex in the Simplex. I use my NOX most of the time and have the Simplex as backup or for friends or the family to use .

I have both the Simplex and the Equinox 600. I've never had a problem with the shaft wobbling. I like the Simplex because of what you get for the price. It's a great machine, but I don't like the fact that the headphones are proprietary. I can't stand the over-the-head headphones. I also like the multi-frequency on the Nox.. Not a fan of the charging port either. For the price.. Definitely worth it.

I now own the Equinox 800. I found your video very informative and appreciated the fact you simplified most of the technical lingo so that less experienced people such as myself can better understand while learning. I agree 100% on your assessment on the shaft and love the look and ease of adjustment of your new aftermarket shaft... but i was wondering on length comparison extended and collapsed ?

And to be fair, the lower-end Minelab Vanquish series also uses multi-frequency technology, the same as the Equinox. I run a Vanquish 440 and ended up returning my Equinox 600 because I just didn't see enough added value for the Equinox for the difference in price. I might change my mind later. You said in the beginning about the price difference between the simplex (entry level machine) and the 600 and 800 equinox machines ( high end machines) with the price difference being almost 3 times the price. Then you go on and say how the equinox is better at this and that. Of course there are more features. It’s like trying to compare a screw driver with an impact driver .

    • @TheHistoryDigger1

Of course. What’s your point? They are different machines; one more advanced than the other but not everyone is clear on the difference. Is the increased price worth it? For me there was no doubt. Since then I’ve upgraded to an even more expensive machine.

It wasnt as deep but had good signals in 8 inches. Old tech. But anyone who believes the simplex is better than anything costing north of £600 then they are mistaken. The Simplex is a single frequency machine. It performs well and is a great value for the dollar but struggles on mineralized ground snd saltwater beaches. The Legend is a simultaneous, multi frequency machine with far more capabilities and customization capabilities. Nokta recently announced some additional versions of the Simplex BTW. They are not on the market yet but may be worth the weight.
If you can afford the difference I’d go with the Legend. If interested let me know as I sell both of these as an affiliate Digstock dealer. Email me if interested at thehistorydigger@gmail.com

Nice video, thank you. I have the Simplex and the Equinox 600. I was not happy with the Simplex until i added the carbon fiber lower shaft and the smaller SB24 coil. Those 2 items made it a much better machine.
And i will not be happy with the Equinox until i get an after market shaft. It is ironic that the less expensive Minelab Vanquish comes with a much nicer camlock shaft. The pushpin shaft on the Equinox is no better than what you find on a $99 Bounty Hunter.

I have, off course, tried fieldmode but somehow I just dont like it. I trust parkmode to much. With field its like starting all over again. What is your thouts about using parkmode on a field? The ability to customize frequencies, tone breaks, level of Iron bias, ability to detect on beaches, etc and even build quality is really what folks should consider. It's all down to how much money you can afford to part with, and whether or not that money can be legitimately justified when off-set against the quality of your detecting sites, and/or your degree of access and interest in beach detecting, and how much commonsense you are gifted with. I know people who rush out to buy air rifles that cost £1,000 plus, when all they have is twenty acres of shooting ground and only crows and the odd squirrel to go after, simply because they HAVE to own a ######## make of gun. If commonsense prevailed, these same people would have been better served buying a good £300 gun. I’ve heard that mentioned too but not sure it is true given it’s not the control unit. Risk worth taking though and also kept original shaft. Thx though.

My friends and I have about every machine there is I'd not buy a nox because my 540 vanquish beats the glass of the nox in competition with other Machines its just in a cheaper. format and the simplex I have with 2.78 two park modes sweeps up after everything else but by all means you be the judges

I hear you Charles. They all finds stuff for sure. Right now I’m using the Deus ll. Performance is good but the ergonomics are great. Super light and portable. Thx for watching and commenting. HH!
