Verdi’s popular epic Aida returns to Covent Garden in its first revival of David McVicar’s new staging this season with a world-class cast headed by Roberto Alagana, Carlo Ventre and Dongwon Shin.
I can' t understand, why In our times, people thing, this kind of music is boring. Damn this is beautiful... You don't need to have money, or education or anything special to enjoy it.
The anthem of national Dutch fottball team supporters, among others. Just to show how high culture can transcend social barriers and reach even the hooligans, like myself.
@Rachegotter: There are two Vladimir Nabokov, the father born 1870, the son born 1899. Aida was first performed in 1871.They had no involvement with Aida. The father was born in Russia; Russian father and German mother - Nationality-Russian; heritage-Russian/German; his son also born in Russia, also Russian nationality, Russian/German heritage. When the son became an American citizen, he denounced his Russian citizenship (nationality). His heritage did not change. Law has no bearing on heritage.
Our future generation, and our present as well may have a great potential to becoming a great musician like the classic ones. I dislike when people say ''this current age cannot surpass our latent composes'' In fact, we may have a greater advantage with our current technology, and we can make even greater master pieces.
Some say that when the horse is standing on two legs, the rider died in battle, one front leg up means the rider died of wounds inflicted in battle; and if all four legs are on the ground, the rider died of reasons not related to battle..if the back legs are up, or all four of them in the air, then either his horse or his sculpter were nuts...but none of this has been prooven, as many statues dont follow this rule. Some say its up to the artist and the aura he wants to give to his rider.
Many composers in Europe would make song about different events in history, and remember in the 1800's its right after the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, these were two landmark "events" in Europe. It drew the attention of the composers to make music about these events. I hope that answers your question
1:43 - 2:33 will be played a lot today, here in The Netherlands. Our football team is playing against Denmark today (June 9th, 2012) and this tune is like the Dutch football hymn. Hup Holland!
I think Italia's the best country in the world. Its arts, food, women and... love. I would be an Italian guy. Italy, Italy and, again, Italy. I love you!
@Rachegotter I read your discussion with Jakereh 75 and Lamarozzo. Very interesting and intelligent. Here is the question from the same 'opera': whom would you consider a great writer and a poet Vladimir Nabokov to be?
the paintings are of many things, some I recognize from The French and Indian War, and another I recognized was from the storming of the Bastille in France right before the revolution, but there's alot more than that
@Rachegotter: Who one is should be divided into two parts, "heritage" and "nationality". Heritage is your lineage; nationality is the countries that accept you as a citizen and you "pledge your allegiance(s)". Verdi was born of Italian parents in territory taken by Napoleon France. The people did not give Napoleon their "allegiance". Therefore, it does not matter what “Napoleon law” say, the people claimed otherwise. So in both cases Verdi is Italian, every historical article states so.
@enricavillablanca Education has disappeared. In the UK and USA, the English language has all but disappeared. No wonder people don't appreciate this FANTASTIC music!
The hair on the back of my neck is on end. The artwork goes perfect with the music. I am so inspired, that i may kick my supervisor in the nuts tomorrow or just start an arguement.
@avatarofsound Your question is out of topic. It's not whom "I" consider such and such person to be that matters, but rather whom the law considers them to be. Nabokov was born in Russia (St Petersburg), thus to the eyes of the law he was Russian born. He might have felt at some point in his life more French, English, or American. It doesn't take away the fact that he was born in Russia. Like Washington was born in an English-ruled land and Verdi in a French-owned land.
I have heard the same, but I really think it must be the artist´s decision. Just some blocks away from where I live there is a really nice statue of José de San Martín, with his horse standing on two legs. However, he died peacefully in his 70´s in France.
Because perhaps our story is very closed and we love each other .Myself from Corsica I feel closer to Italy than France. Music is anyway without any border because it touch the very heart or not at all.
Only sophisticated and intelligent people can appreciate the greatness of this music.
Verdi is among the greatest musician in Europe and a real patriot for Italy. Grazie tante.
1:45 epic music for 4 tanker's and dog made Polish

You can hear so many popular themes today in this song, like Disney's.
That's an excellent piece of music. I practiced conducting that piece yesterday.

It's nice to see some recognition of Canadian battles! I believe that's General James Wolfe at 1:07
@Rachegotter
I read your discussion with Jakereh 75 and Lamarozzo. Very interesting and intelligent. Here is the question from the same 'opera': whom would you consider a great writer and a poet Vladimir Nabokov to be?

Glad I could help. ^_^
You hear this melody quite often during dutch soccer matches.
This is always played at every graduation I've attended
The first depicts a french chasseur, the title could be that ( french chasseur) but I'm not really sure, saw it in the Louvre

The Best....
@monkeycutie123 Oh dear God that statement just made me paint a hysterical picture in my head!
Why french picture in italian music?
Because perhaps our story is very closed and we love each other .Myself from Corsica I feel closer to Italy than France. Music is anyway without any border because it touch the very heart or not at all.
Sonic Hegehog
