Being a major Pens fan,it was a bittersweet season. On one hand,the Pens dominated the league. Mario returned from cancer to lead us to a 17 game winning streak. And along with Lemieux we had Stevens,Jagr and Francis. The most powerful offense in the league. However,we had that heartbreaking upset in the playoffs. Also,Kevin Stevens had that horrific injury. Even so,that team was AMAZING.
Yea it was the complete opposite feeling from the years prior, I still can't stomach watching that blue line bouncer that went through Barrasso. For all the magic we witnessed to that point, dark clouds began to form over the whole franchise soon after. Luckily the Pens would stay in Pittsburgh, thanks in large to Mario who saved the team several times in his life.

Another great thing about the 1992-93 season, all the original 6 teams were good, which created a lot of interest as well. The Rangers missed the playoffs, but still had superstars, and won the Cup the next season.
I consistently watch playoff and regular season games from the 1987-88 season until the 1992-93 season and i am always enthralled. High scoring and great goaltending. Fast play and fighting. The best jerseys. The greatest players.

(The Buffalo ones. Fuhr was a bit better with Toronto going to Buffalo. Fuhr's overall is close to accurate but not Hasek's. John Blue 62 overall, but Andy Moog 59 overall? 🤣 Moog had 37w-14L-3t in 55gp in 92-93. Moog deserved a 90. Mike Vernon 63. 🤣 He should have 85+. I am not going to go through all of them of course, but you get the point. Larry Murphy was a 74 overall with 85pts and +45. The dude was a Norris contender but got a 74. HAHAHAHA Those ratings were garbage except for a few. They knew they were garbage ratings, that's why in NHL 95, dudes like Craig Janney were 100. 🤣

@@doaftheloafI totally understand the famdom of Hasek. He was so so great at his peak but the NHL was also in its 'dead puck era' in the late 90s and early 00s when Hasek was at his peak. Roy is the only goalie, and the only player overall, to win 3 Conn Smythe trophies, the best player of the playoffs. His game and stats went up in the playoffs when it was time to decide whose team was to be the ultimate winner. 4 Stanley Cups.

As a kid I knew this season well... through the EA Sports' NHL 94 game, lol. I loved that game so much.. and '95 was even better (it was mostly the same from what I remember but goalies were slightly better). I haven't really cared about the series past that point, but back then I was obsessed with it.
NHL 93 (called NHLPA HOCKEY 93) on SNES was about the same gameplay as NHL 94 on SNES. The models of the players and goalies were almost the same. 94 was a bit more refined. The models of the players and goalies in NHL 95 were new, and the gameplay was different. NHL 93 was the one where, for example, let's say you are the team scoring down, and you've got the puck on the left wing skating down on the right side of the screen along the boards to go around the net. Once behind the net you could break at the far post, and that triggered the goalie to glitch and get stuck on a post. If that didn't work right away, you could just do some dangling left and right directly behind the net until the goalie got stuck. It always worked. Then all you needed to do is get that puck in front of the net to shoot it in the empty net. LMAO You could do it from the other side also, but I don't remember if it worked when shooting up. Maybe. You couldn't do that glitch move in NHL 94 anymore, at least not in the SNES version. The goalies were trained to not get stuck. LMAO They fixed it. The game was more polished. Another difference was that NHL 94 was the first game with Anaheim and Florida. Both NHL 93 and 94 had that super cool feature during your game's intermission. If you didn't start your period right away and just wait and watch the scores of other games at the bottom of the screen, there was a thing that was popping on the score like an alert, then you had to click a button to watch the highlight. It showed you the computers playing each other and the highlight goals. That feature was pretty fun. The glitch goal in NHL 94 was a bit different and there was a couple ways to do it. One of the ways is, you start behind the net red line corner and skate like a half-moon (or wide wrap around) in front of the net to put yourself in the position to skate horizontally mostly & slightly diagonally to beat the goalie far post with a clean shot. Another way, for example, shooting up with a lefty. You skate up from the boards on the right to the left side in the middle / in front of the goalie to have the far (left) side open up for a clean easy goal once again horizontally and diagonally. This had more success to cut in that angle rather than doing a wider wrap around like the first way I mentioned. The wider you take that angle the easier it is for the goalie to recuperate the pixel you had gained on it. The third way is vertical and can be done in many angles. You skate up or down vertically in a slight diagonal way to bait the goalie on your backhand, for example a lefty skating up will have his blade open with the puck on his left side if he skates up and left but if he skates up and right the puck will go in front of him closer to his right side. So if you straight up skate up and right vertically from the center of the ice and angle your path by either dribbling or holding it on the backhand until you're close enough to pull it quickly on your forehand and shoot in the net like the Pavel Bure move you'll score almost every time with enough speed. The same principle can be done in reverse to score on the back hand, but the goalies are a lot tougher and they have a better saving % against the backhand. Sometimes they stretch the leg and the backhand hits the pad and you see the puck hit the pad then go up above the goalie's head only to fall back on the pad because at that point the goalie already controls it and will be able to pass it once the puck gets back down there. LMAO A fourth way similar to the first one would be to go around the net in a semi-close wrap around but not too wide or too close, more like a full-circling around the goalie type of thing to use the same principles, speed angle far post! That also can work but sometimes the goalie knocks you off if you're too close and he touches you. In NHL 93, the goalies were faster when you tried to circle them like that. In that regard, the NHL 94 goalies are a bit weaker on that particular move. There were lots of other creative ways to score goals with passes but I wouldn't consider those glitch goals like the forehand far post speed angle shot! There are other similarities and differences between NHL 93 and 94 of course. If you look for NHLPA HOCKEY 93 SNES and NHL 94 SNES on youtube you'll see what I'm saying. The other thing I remember that was 100% different is that the NHL 93 fights were not in NHL 94. As a kid, I felt like NHL 95 was weird, but don't get me wrong I still loved it like crazy. I just remember that it felt weird at first because none of the old moves worked. I realized after getting good that those moves could still be pulled but in a different way or timing. That's because the puck handling feels and looks more wobbly when you dangle left and right. How did that happen? Well, they increased the game speed, but didn't improve puck handling, so therefore they decreased then handling compared to 94. I remember the slapshots weren't looking powerful but they were slightly more effective in 95. In NHL 94, the slapshots felt powerful, they didn't look weak, but they weren't as effective. The passes in 95 were weird too, they felt a bit slow and weak once again maybe because of the skating speed. I think they did it that way because in 94, the passes were slick, it looked refined when they received the puck, however most of time they were slow to move with it like their acceleration. It was its charm in a sense, because that's when you could catch them with big body checks. That's another thing. The body checks were extremely weak in 95, they felt like butter unless it was a perfect hit. Those felt nice but they were rare. It got a lot more fun in 95 when I mastered the backhand goal with the same principles I was using in 94 but on reverse, hence backhand. It's weird that 94 had the best moves because it was slower. So they never were really able to put the right doze of speed to make it slick 94 but slightly faster. Anyhow, In 94 the body checks were perfect. In 93 the body checks were okay, but the players were too tough, they were rocks. What saved NHL 95 was the brand new CRAZY-COOL features like: (1st NHL game that you can) - save your season - create players - make trades, sign players, release them Those simple basic features began in NHL 95. I can still remember that a shit load of players were rated 100. Craig Janney was a 100 believe it or not. LMAO I also remember that all trades were accepted if the players you were trading were within 4 of overall, unless a team was to have to many goalies or things like that. So you could climb your way up to get nearly a team of full 100s. Start with a 76 overall player and trade it for a 80, then the 80 for a 84, then for a 88, for a 92, for a 96, for a 100. You could repeat that and get yourself a team of super-All-Stars. That worked also in NHL 96. They kept the 4 overall difference trade thing for another year at least and maybe more. I preferred 96 to 95 like I preferred 94 to 93, because 96 was like the 2.0 of 95 and 94 was like the 2.0 of 93. In 96 the skating, passing, and pass receiving is a lot smoothened compared to 95 with the wobbly puck handling. The passing is what made it better and the rate of successful body checks. In 95 most body checks didn't land, they were way too buttery, but when you landed a perfect body check it felt heavy. In 94 it felt just as heavy, and the damage felt bigger like the players were getting crunched with the perfect ratio for the fall. In 96 the body checks were landing more than 95 but they sometimes felt a bit light or buttery like the 95 ones, which resulted in the players feeling like buttery rocks. The slapshots between 95 and 96 is debatable. There is both good and bad things about them. I personally feel like both felt weak a bit, but since 96 had smoother skating and puck handling, creative slapshot goals were cooler in 96 whereas too much creativity in 95 with your slapshot made the player unable to shoot straight. So 96 was better in the slapshot accuracy department than 95.
That’s the season I watched Gretzky go to the Cup and fell in love with the sport. I bought blades and a stick and puck and played hockey everyday then joined a team then made it to ncaa and world junior championships u21. Hockey got me as far as college but maybe changed the person I am.
It was my favorite season. Great regular season. A rookie record that will probably never be broken. Mario's return. Alexander's 76 goals. All the playoff upsets. Just a great year.

You will note there were exactly 24 teams and the last season with the old 2:1 ratio USA-Canada with no more than 16 teams in USA and 8 in Canada, including four in the east and four in the west. The NHL was perfectly balanced.

In Gretz's absence Kurri had an incredible 46 points in his first 22 games @32 years old. That included a wild stretch of 27 points in just 8 games! (games 11-18). He slowed down considerably after that crazy start. As a Gretzky/Kurri fan i recall that insane start the most (w/o Wayne).
wow it patrick roy, teemu selanne and mario lemieux . Mario had the most offensive talent I've ever seen, it's a shame injuries kept him from challenging for more cups and scoring records. but I'm thankful i got to see him play
For me 94 season was the best. New York Rangers finally win the Stanley cup after 54 years. So much iconic moments in history as well happening in 1994. Rapper Nas dropped his debut album illmatic. OJ Simpson is on the run in a white bronco. Knicks and Rangers are both making a playoff run. Kurt Cobain is found dead. Nacy Kerrigan is we attacked during Winter Olympics. World Series canceled. So much history in sports and entertainment world was crazy. Although a lot of these on the list are sad moments some were the greatest to happen and most iconic.
Don't forget Rangers vs Devils which was the greatest playoff series of all time. And Leetch's historic performance in the playoffs. Plus the Devils vs Sabres and Canucks vs Flames classic 7 game series along with the Bruins vs Devils classic. 1994 playoffs were unmatched.
This was the first season and postseason that I meticulously followed. Read all the stats, standing, game summaries and Lemieux reclimbing the point board to overtake LaFontaine. My underdog Sabres swept the Bruins for the first series win in a decade with an amazing OT Series-clinching Goal "MAYDAY!". I was all in with the NHL. Each season after I hoped to enjoy the same magic, but it never came close. Bettman quickly changed the league and the Strike and the Dead-Puck Era just slowly killed my enjoyment. I kind of tapped out after the 1999 "No Goal" skate in the crease Cup Winner.
Bettman is the greatest commissioner in sports. No one caress about your enjoyment if you don't like hockey then don't support the NHL by watching and complaining about it.
Miss being a kid and reading the NHL leaders daily in the newspaper sports section, seeing GILMOUR and ANDREYCHUK in bold. Best season by a mile and the season that started the best NHLPA Hockey video game dynasty.

This video is accurate. The Lindros story itself is the genesis of what became the Avs early dynasty. Without Forsberg, hockey in Colorado would be very different today. I cannot see them winning any cups with Lindros in their lineup instead of Forsberg.
Another couple of facts..resulting from this season were the ABSOLUTELY LEGENDARY NHL'94 for Sega Genesis AND the inaugural hockey season for Kenner Starting Lineups.

As a Finn Mogilny slightly annoyed me by taking away from Selänne's epic rookie season just a bit by tying in goals that season. By the way without internet back then i always looked at the scores every morning from teletext in our tv (if you know what that is..) so you just saw the scores and scorers but no highlights. Luckily they did have that weekly nhl magazine program that showed highlighta for the week with some Selänne goals often too.
One fact about the finals. Eric Desjardins is the only defenseman in NHL history to score a hat trick in a finals game. Not Orr or Coffey nor any of the prolific scoring defenseman achieved that distinction. Crazy
What Leetch did the following season was way more impressive. 34 points while playing incredible defense and winning the Conn Smythe Trophy with the pressure of a 54 year curse on his shoulders is insane. A performance that will never be duplicated.
The NHL had a lot of potential momentum with the Gretzky LA kings in the finals one year and the New York Rangers winning the next. They promptly destroyed it with the lockout.
This season was the best balance between skill, stars, influx of new talent, expansion, contrast in styles, and different systems being played than any other year. The trap existed (Montreal was playing it) but hadn't taken over the league. Fighting was still around but wasn't the cluster it had been a few years earlier. Expansion was padding scoring numbers...people complain about that...but how boring was it a few seasons ago when 80 points led the league? I think my biggest issue with today's NHL is the lack of contrast. There is much less difference between a 1st liner and a 4th liner...everyone can skate, coaching systems have taken away creativity (and narrowed the gap)... really the 4th line guys can almost hang, they just don't shoot quite as well or don't have that unique skill like Ovechkin's shot or Crosby's hands. Plus, every goalie today would be better than all but the very best in 1992-93 especially with the giant equipment. It makes today's game much more reliant on a lucky bounce or a mistake which is why there is so much dump and chase versus Gretzky creating with a pass or Lemieux cutting through the defense. No fights to change momentum, can't hit guys too hard anymore (Reaves would be the 3rd best fighter on a 1992-93 squad). The skill level and overall athleticism of the players today is far superior but the game has lost something along the way.
I agree, 92 was the beginning of the end for the NHL. Goals and stats started to go down near 95 with Devils trap and it became ugly hockey, goalies didn't look like normal players but became HUGE monsters, and goals went down and down over the years until 2018... Now in 2024 it's better, but it will be be amazing stat wise. Also nhl93, nhl94 were the best :) montreal Winning the Cup, Lemieux was the best, Gretzky was best :) Mogilny and Selanne 76 goals! Was sick. Mogilny became my favorite player the day of the All Star game in Montreal, watching him on that breakaway, I was like yup that's my guy now lol, So I mimicked that move vs my cousin in nets and it worked 75%+ of the time :) When Islanders beat Pittsburgh I never was so happy! I had a feeling Pitts would have beaten the Habs but we will never know, since they beat easily the team that beat them. #GoHabsGo

Interesting that Selanne was (deservedly) a first ballot HOFer but Mogilny has been eligible for several years and still isn’t in. The 76 goal season alone makes a good case for him, but the rest of his career was pretty good too. Plus he was the first Russian to defect to the NHL, which is typically the kind of thing the HOF uses to boost a case for induction

I don't think it's that far fetched to think Pittsburgh would have beaten Montreal. I'm sure they would have been favored in that series.

To me if the NHL didn't lose its deal with ESPN in 2003 hockey would be wayyyy more popular today. Hockey was just starting to get attention from tons of people who wouldn't normally be into it. ESPN had build a great foundation for the sport and helping it be accepted as a major sport in America...until 2003..I alway wonder how much more popular the sport would be if they were able to renew that contract w ESPN.
I'm not so sure it would've. ESPN had a deal signed a TV contract with the NHL in 1999 that extended the broadcast rights through the 2004-2005 season. ESPN had the TV rights for the NHL on and off since the 1979-1980 season. So why it would be "wayyyy more popular today" really doesn't have any traction. The last year of the 1999 rights extension gets canceled by the strike, and non hockey content that was replaced in the timeslot was receiveing higher ratings than the NHL had the previous year.
1994 actually had a better playoffs than 1993, culminating with a classic 7 game final between the Rangers and Canucks. 1993 final between the Habs and Kings was pretty lame by comparison.
That 100-point scorers list of 21 players doesn’t feature 1 player from the team that won the Stanley Cup that year. (Just additional evidence to prove the case that it takes a well balanced, 4 line, depth, strong defense, TEAM to win in the PO) Some teams on that list had multiple players. Some of that increased point totals for that year can be attributed to the expansion teams that were really minor league AHL/IHL teams. I bet if you examined it further, players on this list probably were in teams that played these minor league teams the most times that year, padding point totals. Also consider that this was when goalies were still average size and would actually make saves, unlike now where they’re 7ft tall and wear equipment that is no longer just for protection, but to make them as huge as possible to take up space in the net so pucks are blocked more than saved. They’re constantly on their knees because their shoulders still block the top of the net. Andrei Vasilesvky looks like the Michelin Man in net, like so many others. They flair out their chest protectors to become blockers. They look 350 lbs in net, But you see them in normal clothes and they are 7ft tall, scrawny beanpoles. Some goalies aren’t like that, Sergei Bobrovsky is one makes saves.

Another great thing about the 1992-93 season, all the original 6 teams were good, which created a lot of interest as well. The Rangers missed the playoffs, but still had superstars, and won the Cup the next season.

Roy is the only goalie, and the only player overall, to win 3 Conn Smythe trophies, the best player of the playoffs. His game and stats went up in the playoffs when it was time to decide whose team was to be the ultimate winner. 4 Stanley Cups.

As a kid I knew this season well... through the EA Sports' NHL 94 game, lol. I loved that game so much.. and '95 was even better (it was mostly the same from what I remember but goalies were slightly better). I haven't really cared about the series past that point, but back then I was obsessed with it.
NHL 93 (called NHLPA HOCKEY 93) on SNES was about the same gameplay as NHL 94 on SNES.
The models of the players and goalies were almost the same. 94 was a bit more refined.
The models of the players and goalies in NHL 95 were new, and the gameplay was different.
NHL 93 was the one where, for example, let's say you are the team scoring down,
and you've got the puck on the left wing skating down on the right side of the screen along the boards to go around the net.
Once behind the net you could break at the far post, and that triggered the goalie to glitch and get stuck on a post.
If that didn't work right away, you could just do some dangling left and right directly behind the net until the goalie got stuck.
It always worked. Then all you needed to do is get that puck in front of the net to shoot it in the empty net. LMAO
You could do it from the other side also, but I don't remember if it worked when shooting up. Maybe.
You couldn't do that glitch move in NHL 94 anymore, at least not in the SNES version.
The goalies were trained to not get stuck. LMAO They fixed it.
The game was more polished. Another difference was that NHL 94 was the first game with Anaheim and Florida.
Both NHL 93 and 94 had that super cool feature during your game's intermission.
If you didn't start your period right away and just wait and watch the scores of other games at the bottom of the screen,
there was a thing that was popping on the score like an alert, then you had to click a button to watch the highlight.
It showed you the computers playing each other and the highlight goals. That feature was pretty fun.
The glitch goal in NHL 94 was a bit different and there was a couple ways to do it.
One of the ways is, you start behind the net red line corner and skate like a half-moon (or wide wrap around) in front of the net to put yourself in the position to skate horizontally mostly & slightly diagonally to beat the goalie far post with a clean shot.
Another way, for example, shooting up with a lefty. You skate up from the boards on the right to the left side in the middle / in front of the goalie to have the far (left) side open up for a clean easy goal once again horizontally and diagonally. This had more success to cut in that angle rather than doing a wider wrap around like the first way I mentioned. The wider you take that angle the easier it is for the goalie to recuperate the pixel you had gained on it.
The third way is vertical and can be done in many angles. You skate up or down vertically in a slight diagonal way to bait the goalie on your backhand, for example a lefty skating up will have his blade open with the puck on his left side if he skates up and left but if he skates up and right the puck will go in front of him closer to his right side. So if you straight up skate up and right vertically from the center of the ice and angle your path by either dribbling or holding it on the backhand until you're close enough to pull it quickly on your forehand and shoot in the net like the Pavel Bure move you'll score almost every time with enough speed. The same principle can be done in reverse to score on the back hand, but the goalies are a lot tougher and they have a better saving % against the backhand. Sometimes they stretch the leg and the backhand hits the pad and you see the puck hit the pad then go up above the goalie's head only to fall back on the pad because at that point the goalie already controls it and will be able to pass it once the puck gets back down there. LMAO
A fourth way similar to the first one would be to go around the net in a semi-close wrap around but not too wide or too close, more like a full-circling around the goalie type of thing to use the same principles, speed angle far post! That also can work but sometimes the goalie knocks you off if you're too close and he touches you. In NHL 93, the goalies were faster when you tried to circle them like that. In that regard, the NHL 94 goalies are a bit weaker on that particular move.
There were lots of other creative ways to score goals with passes but I wouldn't consider those glitch goals like the forehand far post speed angle shot!
There are other similarities and differences between NHL 93 and 94 of course.
If you look for NHLPA HOCKEY 93 SNES and NHL 94 SNES on youtube you'll see what I'm saying.
The other thing I remember that was 100% different is that the NHL 93 fights were not in NHL 94.
As a kid, I felt like NHL 95 was weird, but don't get me wrong I still loved it like crazy.
I just remember that it felt weird at first because none of the old moves worked.
I realized after getting good that those moves could still be pulled but in a different way or timing.
That's because the puck handling feels and looks more wobbly when you dangle left and right.
How did that happen? Well, they increased the game speed, but didn't improve puck handling,
so therefore they decreased then handling compared to 94.
I remember the slapshots weren't looking powerful but they were slightly more effective in 95.
In NHL 94, the slapshots felt powerful, they didn't look weak, but they weren't as effective.
The passes in 95 were weird too, they felt a bit slow and weak once again maybe because of the skating speed.
I think they did it that way because in 94, the passes were slick, it looked refined when they received the puck,
however most of time they were slow to move with it like their acceleration.
It was its charm in a sense, because that's when you could catch them with big body checks.
That's another thing. The body checks were extremely weak in 95, they felt like butter unless it was a perfect hit.
Those felt nice but they were rare. It got a lot more fun in 95 when I mastered the backhand goal with the same principles I was using in 94 but on reverse, hence backhand. It's weird that 94 had the best moves because it was slower.
So they never were really able to put the right doze of speed to make it slick 94 but slightly faster.
Anyhow, In 94 the body checks were perfect.
In 93 the body checks were okay, but the players were too tough, they were rocks.
What saved NHL 95 was the brand new CRAZY-COOL features like: (1st NHL game that you can)
- save your season
- create players
- make trades, sign players, release them
Those simple basic features began in NHL 95.
I can still remember that a shit load of players were rated 100. Craig Janney was a 100 believe it or not. LMAO
I also remember that all trades were accepted if the players you were trading were within 4 of overall, unless a team was to have to many goalies or things like that. So you could climb your way up to get nearly a team of full 100s.
Start with a 76 overall player and trade it for a 80, then the 80 for a 84, then for a 88, for a 92, for a 96, for a 100.
You could repeat that and get yourself a team of super-All-Stars.
That worked also in NHL 96. They kept the 4 overall difference trade thing for another year at least and maybe more.
I preferred 96 to 95 like I preferred 94 to 93, because 96 was like the 2.0 of 95 and 94 was like the 2.0 of 93.
In 96 the skating, passing, and pass receiving is a lot smoothened compared to 95 with the wobbly puck handling.
The passing is what made it better and the rate of successful body checks.
In 95 most body checks didn't land, they were way too buttery, but when you landed a perfect body check it felt heavy.
In 94 it felt just as heavy, and the damage felt bigger like the players were getting crunched with the perfect ratio for the fall.
In 96 the body checks were landing more than 95 but they sometimes felt a bit light or buttery like the 95 ones,
which resulted in the players feeling like buttery rocks.
The slapshots between 95 and 96 is debatable. There is both good and bad things about them.
I personally feel like both felt weak a bit, but since 96 had smoother skating and puck handling, creative slapshot goals were cooler in 96 whereas too much creativity in 95 with your slapshot made the player unable to shoot straight.
So 96 was better in the slapshot accuracy department than 95.

That’s the season I watched Gretzky go to the Cup and fell in love with the sport. I bought blades and a stick and puck and played hockey everyday then joined a team then made it to ncaa and world junior championships u21. Hockey got me as far as college but maybe changed the person I am.
This is the year I started playing the game around 9 years old. I recorded the Cup series on VHS and watched it again and again that whole summer.

You will note there were exactly 24 teams and the last season with the old 2:1 ratio USA-Canada with no more than 16 teams in USA and 8 in Canada, including four in the east and four in the west. The NHL was perfectly balanced.

In Gretz's absence Kurri had an incredible 46 points in his first 22 games @32 years old. That included a wild stretch of 27 points in just 8 games! (games 11-18). He slowed down considerably after that crazy start. As a Gretzky/Kurri fan i recall that insane start the most (w/o Wayne).

For me 94 season was the best. New York Rangers finally win the Stanley cup after 54 years. So much iconic moments in history as well happening in 1994. Rapper Nas dropped his debut album illmatic. OJ Simpson is on the run in a white bronco. Knicks and Rangers are both making a playoff run. Kurt Cobain is found dead. Nacy Kerrigan is we attacked during Winter Olympics. World Series canceled. So much history in sports and entertainment world was crazy. Although a lot of these on the list are sad moments some were the greatest to happen and most iconic.
Don't forget Rangers vs Devils which was the greatest playoff series of all time. And Leetch's historic performance in the playoffs. Plus the Devils vs Sabres and Canucks vs Flames classic 7 game series along with the Bruins vs Devils classic. 1994 playoffs were unmatched.
Tarantino gave us Pulp Fiction. Kevin Smith gave us Clerks. Pearl Jam gave us Vitalogy. "Friends" premiered. I could go on.
This was the first season and postseason that I meticulously followed. Read all the stats, standing, game summaries and Lemieux reclimbing the point board to overtake LaFontaine. My underdog Sabres swept the Bruins for the first series win in a decade with an amazing OT Series-clinching Goal "MAYDAY!".
I was all in with the NHL. Each season after I hoped to enjoy the same magic, but it never came close. Bettman quickly changed the league and the Strike and the Dead-Puck Era just slowly killed my enjoyment. I kind of tapped out after the 1999 "No Goal" skate in the crease Cup Winner.
Bettman is the greatest commissioner in sports. No one caress about your enjoyment if you don't like hockey then don't support the NHL by watching and complaining about it.

This video is accurate. The Lindros story itself is the genesis of what became the Avs early dynasty. Without Forsberg, hockey in Colorado would be very different today. I cannot see them winning any cups with Lindros in their lineup instead of Forsberg.

Another couple of facts..resulting from this season were the ABSOLUTELY LEGENDARY NHL'94 for Sega Genesis AND the inaugural hockey season for Kenner Starting Lineups.
The 93 playoffs were what made me a hockey fan. If I remember correctly that year set a record for OT playoff games. A shame the playoffs were kind of an afterthought in this video. Maybe they deserve their own video

As a Finn Mogilny slightly annoyed me by taking away from Selänne's epic rookie season just a bit by tying in goals that season. By the way without internet back then i always looked at the scores every morning from teletext in our tv (if you know what that is..) so you just saw the scores and scorers but no highlights.
Luckily they did have that weekly nhl magazine program that showed highlighta for the week with some Selänne goals often too.

What Leetch did the following season was way more impressive. 34 points while playing incredible defense and winning the Conn Smythe Trophy with the pressure of a 54 year curse on his shoulders is insane. A performance that will never be duplicated.

The NHL had a lot of potential momentum with the Gretzky LA kings in the finals one year and the New York Rangers winning the next. They promptly destroyed it with the lockout.

This season was the best balance between skill, stars, influx of new talent, expansion, contrast in styles, and different systems being played than any other year. The trap existed (Montreal was playing it) but hadn't taken over the league. Fighting was still around but wasn't the cluster it had been a few years earlier. Expansion was padding scoring numbers...people complain about that...but how boring was it a few seasons ago when 80 points led the league? I think my biggest issue with today's NHL is the lack of contrast. There is much less difference between a 1st liner and a 4th liner...everyone can skate, coaching systems have taken away creativity (and narrowed the gap)... really the 4th line guys can almost hang, they just don't shoot quite as well or don't have that unique skill like Ovechkin's shot or Crosby's hands. Plus, every goalie today would be better than all but the very best in 1992-93 especially with the giant equipment. It makes today's game much more reliant on a lucky bounce or a mistake which is why there is so much dump and chase versus Gretzky creating with a pass or Lemieux cutting through the defense. No fights to change momentum, can't hit guys too hard anymore (Reaves would be the 3rd best fighter on a 1992-93 squad). The skill level and overall athleticism of the players today is far superior but the game has lost something along the way.

I agree, 92 was the beginning of the end for the NHL. Goals and stats started to go down near 95 with Devils trap and it became ugly hockey, goalies didn't look like normal players but became HUGE monsters, and goals went down and down over the years until 2018... Now in 2024 it's better, but it will be be amazing stat wise. Also nhl93, nhl94 were the best :) montreal Winning the Cup, Lemieux was the best, Gretzky was best :) Mogilny and Selanne 76 goals! Was sick. Mogilny became my favorite player the day of the All Star game in Montreal, watching him on that breakaway, I was like yup that's my guy now lol, So I mimicked that move vs my cousin in nets and it worked 75%+ of the time :) When Islanders beat Pittsburgh I never was so happy! I had a feeling Pitts would have beaten the Habs but we will never know, since they beat easily the team that beat them. #GoHabsGo

Interesting that Selanne was (deservedly) a first ballot HOFer but Mogilny has been eligible for several years and still isn’t in. The 76 goal season alone makes a good case for him, but the rest of his career was pretty good too. Plus he was the first Russian to defect to the NHL, which is typically the kind of thing the HOF uses to boost a case for induction

@@rebeltvr6046 yes that is true. But that penguins team was an absolute juggernaut. They would have got Ron Francis back too. Plus the Canadiens didn't have Darius Kasparitis to antagonize Lemieux. I don't think it's that far fetched to think Pittsburgh would have beaten Montreal. I'm sure they would have been favored in that series.

To me if the NHL didn't lose its deal with ESPN in 2003 hockey would be wayyyy more popular today. Hockey was just starting to get attention from tons of people who wouldn't normally be into it. ESPN had build a great foundation for the sport and helping it be accepted as a major sport in America...until 2003..I alway wonder how much more popular the sport would be if they were able to renew that contract w ESPN.

I'm not so sure it would've. ESPN had a deal signed a TV contract with the NHL in 1999 that extended the broadcast rights through the 2004-2005 season. ESPN had the TV rights for the NHL on and off since the 1979-1980 season. So why it would be "wayyyy more popular today" really doesn't have any traction. The last year of the 1999 rights extension gets canceled by the strike, and non hockey content that was replaced in the timeslot was receiveing higher ratings than the NHL had the previous year.

1994 actually had a better playoffs than 1993, culminating with a classic 7 game final between the Rangers and Canucks. 1993 final between the Habs and Kings was pretty lame by comparison.

That 100-point scorers list of 21 players doesn’t feature 1 player from the team that won the Stanley Cup that year. (Just additional evidence to prove the case that it takes a well balanced, 4 line, depth, strong defense, TEAM to win in the PO) Some teams on that list had multiple players. Some of that increased point totals for that year can be attributed to the expansion teams that were really minor league AHL/IHL teams.
I bet if you examined it further, players on this list probably were in teams that played these minor league teams the most times that year, padding point totals.
Also consider that this was when goalies were still average size and would actually make saves, unlike now where they’re 7ft tall and wear equipment that is no longer just for protection, but to make them as huge as possible to take up space in the net so pucks are blocked more than saved. They’re constantly on their knees because their shoulders still block the top of the net. Andrei Vasilesvky looks like the Michelin Man in net, like so many others. They flair out their chest protectors to become blockers. They look 350 lbs in net, But you see them in normal clothes and they are 7ft tall, scrawny beanpoles.
Some goalies aren’t like that, Sergei Bobrovsky is one makes saves.
And to think that in 1994, with Jordan attempting baseball, Sports Illustrated said "The NHL's Hot, the NBA's Not."
