    Correction: Lindros would’ve been eligible to re-enter the NHL Draft in ’93, not ’92.

    What a brutal time to be a Nordiques fan. Not only can they not convince Lindros to play for them. But when the bounty of players and draft picks they got back develop and the team gets good, the team moves to Denver and immediately wins the Stanley Cup. Sometimes life just isn't fair.

    • @freakyfornash
      @freakyfornash ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yeah, but no guarantee they would have won the Cup, had if they'd stayed in Quebec for the 95-196 season. Keep in mind that they wouldn't have had Patrick Roy, since there was no way in hell the Habs would have traded him to the Nords, no matter what too.

    The funniest thing about the Lindros trade is how it showed *trading* a generational talent is actually better than keeping him (assuming you can get a fair return). I'm actually surprised more teams with the first overall pick don't do this more often as it's a quicker way to build a contender than simply having one really good player.
    Just look at the Oilers for further proof that having a first overall pick, even when their is a generational talent available, does not gaurentee success.

The Flyers didn’t want to totally deplete their roster so they kept Brind’amour and Forsberg went in the deal. As a Flyers fan, Brind’amour is one of the most beloved players ever. The Rangers in 1991 reportedly had an offer of Sergei Nemchinov, Tony Amonte, Alexei Kovalev, James Patrick, the choice of Mike Richter or John Vanbiesbrouck, multiple 1sts, and $20 million U.S.
      For context, Nemchinov was a prospect, Amonte was a former 4th round (today would have been in the 3rd round), Kovalev was the 15th pick from the Rangers in 1991, Patrick was an established who was always in the neighborhood of 50-70 pts with the club, Richter has his # retired by the Rangers and would lead the club to the Stanley Cup in 1994, Vanbiesbrouck was a starting netminder. Combined with the picks (would have been the 8th, 24th or 26th, but draft picks are always magic beans) and the cash, it would have been a bigger trade than the what the Flyers gave up.
      At the time of the draft, Quebec made trades with Toronto to keep Toronto from giving up the pick that would have been Lindtos. So Quebec wanted the 1st pick, so they would not have made a trade at the time of the 1991 draft

    Eric looks like enemy number 1 but consider the NHL environment back then. There was no draft lottery. The Quebec Nordiques were the worst-run organization. Nobody wanted to play there. The Nordiques drafted 3, 1, 1, 1 and 4 in 5 consecutive drafts. There was no unrestricted free agency so if you were drafted by a bad team and you were an all-star player, you were stuck in that organization for a very long time. There was restricted free agency but that only meant the team that lost that player was entitled to compensation. That scared off teams from signing free agents. Looking back now, Eric just wanted to choose where he would live and work for the next 13 years.
