I'm pretty sure Dolly was reaaaaaally talking to Miley at the verse "And I hope life, will treat you kind" etc, because... well, she's her 'fairy godmother' and the rumour it's that Miley kept crying during the rehearsals of this song, so I guess this performance was quite meaningful for both of them. Anyway, great reaction, thank you!

They really made these songs work together. The "I will always love" you line from "Wrecking Ball" made is sung so differently it took a moment to realize it is the title of the next song. It made a great transition.
I loved Dolly's vulnerability and then Miley matched it in her own way for the second song, which also added to the connection between the songs.

If you are ever looking for the ultimate medley to react to, it might be the Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand "Come On Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again" performance. It is from Judy's 1960's TV show. It is an amazing arrangement for two unmatchable voices.

If Miley and she sang in rehearsals and they recorded their voice, I saw a video of the pre-rehearsal of how they sang it live but without people, and Miley even cried, so I imagine they used that pre-rehearsal to put it at the end of the song and everything will be Perfect, that's why some parts look like this, but Miley doesn't use that technique almost never, I think she used it that time because it was on television and New Year's Eve
it's so amazing to see dolly who has a long career in music singing in such an authentic and smooth voice and doing this feat with milley was so special
Miley's voice is so deep and strong, i really like miley, both of them singing together it was a beautiful harmonic sound that I love so much

they recorded the performance before they went live, those clips were on youtube but got deleted, however it´s still 'live' vocals and they are so good.
They def used some audio recordin. Dolly herself literally said so much n a late night show. But I am not coplaining, It still sounds amazing
Miley never lip syncs but I do think that this particular performance was lip synced by both of them because they wanted it to be perfect. The rest of their songs that night were live

It also depends on they normally pronounce words too. According to my 24 year old daughter who was in choir in school. My youngest daughter was in choir from 13 to 18. Dolly coming the mountains of Tennessee and Miley has Billy Ray's Kentucky hills sound. I pronounce words like my dad who was from Michigan, but I was raised in Oregon. My mom was raised in Oregon by a dad who was from Ohio. So with my dad and my gramps being from the mid-west I sound different from others
Of course, how someone pronounces a word depends on their dialect/accent: that's what dialects/accents are all about. But in this case with Miley pronouncing it "Jolayn" it purely has to do with vocal technique :). I say this with certainty, cause when you hear Miley talking in the beginning you clearly hear her pronounce it "Joleen", but when she sings it she pronounces it "Jolayn", and it's more exaggerated on the higher notes. Hence my explanation on vowel changes/assimilation and its function in different vocal qualities/techniques.

Stems are pre-recorded bits that they f.ex. can play during a live performance. They can be instruments, backing vocals or main vocals, but in this case I meant that they might have used it for a bit of the main vocals towards the end :)
