i’ve been collecting bones since i was 10 or 11, so about 7-8 years ago, and i have a couple that i’ve thought good for carving but didn’t really know where to start. do i have access to all of those tools right as i do this? no, but we persevere 💪 thanks for the video :)
Good to hear your interested in carving. The best thing to start with is a rotary tool and a set of bits. Pays to get a mask and eye protection aswell. Doesn't need to be the best stuff. Just start carving. 👍
Started doing some bone carving and I'm wondering, do you need to varnish the bone or is the boiling of the bone enough to keep it form becoming brittle? Also have you tried antlers? Is the prepping of the antler same as the bone
I've never needed to varnish the bone. As long as you get the bone pure white you'll be fine. Sometimes some peices require a second boil. I boil with dishwash liquid 1 part, bleach 1 part and water 8 parts. And I have done antler the same. Noticed that they lightened up a bit so maby less bleach for that.
Loved it. I suggest listing in the description, the tools you use. Thanks, keep it coming.
Thanks, will do! Will do that in the next one.
Make sure to wear a mask. Bone dust is not good for the lungs. Great job Mate!!
Yea. Always do. 👍
Me encantan estos trabajos mahoris, los vi hacer en Nueva Zelanda i me gustaria atreverme a hacerlo. Desde Barcelona gracias y un saludo.
It's very relaxing. There's no harm in trying it. And it's cheep to get started. Just give it a go.
Nice. And actually quite relaxing chap. I'm Lacking creativity atm so this will give me an idea.
Glad to hear it!
You made that look easy. That tells me that you are quite talented. Beautiful piece. 😎
Thank you! Cheers!
I love bone carving!! So relaxing!!
It really is!
I sell bones.
Don't stop there. Good onya, mate.🧙♂
Thanks man. Will be putting more up soon. Moved to a different city last minute so have to sort out the new workshop.
Hi! Nice work! Where do you find this kind of bone? Ty!🙏
I buy it from a butcher. They sell it for like $2 for 6 as dog bones. I bleach and process it myself.
@@rickthemaker5834 bleached and dried?
Yea. Boiled for 4 hrs in a mix of bleach and washing detergent. Then dried for 2 days.
@@rickthemaker5834 Ty very much!!!🙏
Great video. I’d like to see some of the carving done in real time just to get an idea of how long it take to sand some of the bone down. Thanks
I can include that in my next video for ya
@@rickthemaker5834 thanks!
awesome work g
Thanks 💯 love carving. Do you want to see me carve a particular design?
How do you get around the stink while carving bone?
A good dust mask. And I use a down draft table that goes into a filtered box. If you can smell the bone your breathing it in.
beleza pura.
Thank you
Awesome work brother. Where did you get ur carving set
The dremel I got from a shop years ago but all my bits and stuff is usually ali express. I sometimes get specialty ones from the hardware store.

I have to replace the plait necklace on mine. I am looking for the most durable way to do this
My next carving video, I'll be doing a tutorial on stringing them.
@@rickthemaker5834 thank you so much. I’ll wait for that before restringing mine.

@@rickthemaker5834 thank you for the answer! :)
What type of bone are you using and where did you get it from?
Mostly beef bone. Get it from my local butcher and process it myself. Going to have a video out soon of the processing.
how much does that sort of dremel you use typically cost?
The one I have cost me about $450 but that was about 10 years ago. There are ones similar around. Best thing to do is search online for the best deal.
How do you prepare the bone?
The next time I get more I'll do a video on it. A bunch of people have asked the same thing. Lol
Nice video, very good, thank you! Only the music is stressing me, had to switch off sound!
Sorry about that
What type of bone are you using?
Just beef bone from the butcher.
What did You do to get it so splendid white!?
I can’t seem to find bone anywhere, including numerous searches on Amazon, ebay, etc.
I get mine from the butcher and process it myself. Have just put up a video showing how I do it.
Can I buy it off you
Sorry but its been sold. If you are wanting to buy something message me on Instagram at rickthemaker87 and I'll make a new one and do a video on it.
@@rickthemaker5834 aww thanks man I appreciate it.
What type of dremel is that you are using?
I go over what I use in my next video
I sell bones.
What trype of bone is that?
It's just beef bone. I get it from a butcher. It's packs they sell as dog bones.
@@rickthemaker5834 AHH I see, I have one I was given years ago and cleaned, might just dig it out now and have a try at carving :)
It's really good a. Relaxing and you get a nice peice at the end of it. Going to have more carving videos up soon.
Just read the rest of the comments and saw my answer
No problem. I'll do a video on how I process it with the next lot I do.
