Huge Rough Ethiopian Opals!

  • I attended the Nipomo Gem and mineral show a few days ago. There was a merchant way in the back corner that had some of the biggest chunks of ethiopian rough that I'd seen in a long time! Some of these large ones are over 200 grams (1000 carats)!
    I DID ask for permission to shoot this video and was granted it.
    I sifted through these stones for almost an hour. Here is a very short highlight of some of these stones.
    At the end of the video I show off the opal I selected. Buying rough like this is always a huge gamble. Even though I've been doing this for years, This opal could still crack on me and put a serious dent in my investment.

    The rough that is kept in water like that is what is called "crystal," which has a totally different meaning than when that term is used to describe Australian opal. In Ethiopian opal "crystal opal' is opal that does NOT absorb water. This type of opal pretty much always cracks. I have seen pieces that took one or two years to crack but then eventually cracked. Other times it will crack within an hour of being out of water. It is specimen grade material in my opinion and it has a much lower market value than the hydrophane material. Having said that, I have seen some amazing pieces! With some being over two kilos! I wish it was stable. The Ethiopian opal that absorbs water is very stable and quite shock resistant.

    • @earthartgems
      @earthartgems  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had not know that at the time, I had only seen the hydrophane material and I did purchase one chunk, took it home, and cut it, and the cracks formed in 24 hours! But it cracked so uniformly, it was like old crackle glass. kinda neat. Not worth much except as a pretty reminder I keep on my desk.

      I agree except there is lots of hydrophane crystal opal. The stuff in the video is mostly unstable jelly opal. Not true crystal opal.

    • @rj4313
      @rj4313 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @khalid seid thats understandable, but I'm curious, if the land is fertile, then why are the people starving instead of growing their own food? Elsewhere, people grow food in their yards to survive, why not Ethiopia? Pondering this because I hate knowing children are dying from starvation on this planet, when we have the ability to end this suffering.

    • @rj4313
      @rj4313 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @khalid seid thanks for the clarification. Don't understand why they stay there, if it was me, I would rather sleep on the street in wealthier areas than watch my family die, maybe they're force to stay there by law or military.

    Do any of them ever hold value and not crack. I have heard many negative things about this type of opal, and they seem to have very low cost/value compared to other types.

    • @gantz4u
      @gantz4u 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. Depends on what layer it was mined at. Australian is a more refined market where the cutters are on location and experienced enough with the miners to not waste their time on the opal mines that crack. Miners are same to not mine deeper (wetter)seams that destroy their parcels reputation without letting it sit to slow dry and sift through the stuff liable to crack before sale. Opal is Opal in this way IMO. To value an opal location I think it's not how much opal there is, but how much STABLE opal. The less STABLE opal a region produces the more valuable because of rarity. You can have 100 Million tons of opal, but if only 0.0001% is stable that's alot less opal that region can actually produce. Even a region with no stable opal will be producing SOME that slips through the process without cracking, such as Virgin Valley Nevada. Even After 10 years of demonstrated stability. In jewelry, there's a possibility that the wearer can submit any opal to harsher stresses it hasn't experienced for millions of years, with the potential to crack even then. The probability is just alot lower with stable.

    • @earthartgems
      @earthartgems  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi MP, it varies. This video was taken at a local gem and mineral show. Most of them are open to the public. Just do a local online search for any local rock hound or gem and mineral clubs and see if they host shows. These will often pull in dealers that have opals as well (but not always). Online I have been approached by dozens of dealers from overseas claiming to be importers/exporters of Ethiopian opal. I've likely attracted them due to these videos. I have not done business with an of them as I have found it hard to trust them and they typically want payment upfront and will just send you a large parcel. It will probably have a lot of junk and a few good stones. Some opal will crack as soon as it is cut, while some is stable to cut. It is important to ask which you are getting (Specimen grade or cutting grade) So in short, I do not have a specific dealer I can recommend. But I can suggest to buy in person if at all possible. You may have to pay more, but then you can pick only the stones you want.

      @@earthartgems oh, i didnt watch the entire video. My mistake. Always wanting to purchase a bulk amount of larger specimines and cutters but often its accruing them one at a time. But then again, i buy them faster then I can prep them for sale. Lol

    How stable are those large chunks? I know a lot of Welo opals craze over time wile others are nice and stable. also why are some in water? what I would give to have a chunk like that xD.

      As I understood, the pieces in the water were from a region that was prone to cracking once removed from water. While the pieces not in the water were stable.

      @@earthartgems Ah cool. I watched a video on people who trekked to the Welo mines and it gave the impression that all the opals were coming from just one seam on a plateau. I always wondered if there were more deposits.

      @@lazerman121 I've never been there, but this is waht I was told by the fellow that had these opals at the show.

      I do not sell these. These are from a different vendor. I took video of his stones with his permission. This video is also 5 years old, so this material is gone.
