Synthetics can be a viable alternative, local ecosystems aren't torn to pieces by heavy equipment, there is no slave labor and they are much less expensive. As a jeweler and designer of 50 years I can honestly say that most lab grown gemstones easily pass for genuine. One way to tell is that the lab grown has no internal flaws. Specific gravity can be used as well to be certain in some cases. I've been advocating for lab grown since the Apartide. What the DeBeers did to the people and the land is despicable. In my humble opinion, mining of gemstones in general is bad karma. We have amazing technology now, why not use it? Thanks for the rant.
Great video and my beloved opal earrings are FAKE!!! They were sold to me as real and I had no idea. So I'm going to go cry and get myself some real opals after i educate myself a little better...
it just depends on what you can afford. Synthetic is fine as long as you, or the person selling it, is not trying to pass it off as real opal. I bet synthetic is probably a bit more durable as well, but I cannot say that with complete accuracy.
I just bought a wire-wrapped opal that's been polished but still has a bit of sand/rock on one side. It's mainly orange with lots of fire of green and yellow throughout. Would it be Mexican opal?
I think if someone wants an ecologically viable opal that is more resilient to everyday wear and tear the only way to go is with the man made opal. Natural opal is delicate and not recommended for everyday wear. I have both and a boulder opal ring and they are all lovely.
In my opinion the Ethiopian Opal is the prettiest of them all, and it IS the most durable. A drop test was conducted from 4 feet, and the Ethiopian opal is the only opal that did not crack.
Fake opal looks like it's almost made up of that clear stuff they use for molds... With holo flakes throughout it. Which is why it stays consistent with the pattern... Rather than. Almost like an Aurora Borealis... Flowing, almost like strokes from an artists paintbrush... Or the rivers flowing downstream... Thank you, man.
Can you recommend some websites that are verified and sell real natural opal rings? I’m trying to find a natural opal ring for my wedding. I don’t want to get screwed over and buy fake. Thank you? Do you sell rings by any chance?
Loving your videos! I'm curious where you get your rough opal from? Also I have noticed many sellers sell fakes and market them as real, it can definitley be frustrating finding an honest gem supplier lol.
Regarding how it becomes transparent when wet, I like how it looks a lot! Wonder if it could be infused with a very thin and clear resin for achieving the same effect but permanently. (kind of whst they call "wood stabilizing")... Or is there an alterative with such characteristics already?
Did you ever find out the answer if this is possible? I am new to the world of gemstones and jewelry and I'm a guy but I still want an epic magical Opal Ring. I know some kinds of Opal gets cloudy, and idk if it's permanent flaw or not. Some specific kind of opal can be temporarily "restored" by getting it wet. But other opal can only be restored by getting dry fully after accidentally getting wet. So I too wanted to make my own rings and cover them in resin so it "stays" but idk if it's possible. Something cool you can do though, is Clear Transparent resin Crafts. Raw opal is very cheap and polishing it and putting it in some resin marbles made at home is something I really want to do! Or paperweights. To make necklaces etc anything.
Ethiopian opals may not be as durable as other types, but they can be stunning and have many beautiful patterns. It seems to me that this person did not know much about the Ethiopian opals at the point he made the video.
Tbf, lab created/synthesized opals are real opals, just like lab created diamonds are real diamonds. Also, THAT Brazilian opal was higher quality than THAT Ethiopian opal, but there are some exquisitely stunning Ethiopian opals out there.
Do you let people know if their opal’s are fake or not? I would love to send you a picture of my pendant so you can tell me if it’s real or synthetic 😩
A good place to start is opal auctions!! Then, id start building relationships from instagram. Best to try to buy as close from the source as possible.
Question: if I purchase a rough Opal and it’s still in its original rock looking form, is there no doubt it’s real? Regardless of where it comes from? Or are there fake rock looking opals out there commonly sold
I've never seen or heard of a fake rock looking opal. That doesn't mean they don't exist though! Buy rough through good networks of people who can be held accountable! Only buy from people who accept returns!
What's the difference between lab created and natural. When talking diamonds, they are the same other than how they were created. Synthetic is actually fake compared to lab created. Input please. Would like to know the difference. Also truly fake fake opals and how to tell if glass. Plastic is obvious. I think I have fake glass opals, but my app says opal.
The black is always referring to the potch underneath the color. When the potch is black, the color pops a lot more by contrast! So black opal can be different colors.

“Naturally by grace” hahaha
I personally dont mind synthetic opals just as long as it sold as that and not natural. Interesting video 2x👍

Thanks you for the amazing work. Helps a lot to distinguish between the fake and original. Also male rings styles would be highly appreciated.
Brazilian opal looks a lot like Australian Coober Pedy white opal.
I should get me some of that Brazilian stuff.
It's pretty gorgeous man. Really really tough stuff due to some type of thermal process in its creation... takes a bit longer to grind down.

In my opinion the Ethiopian Opal is the prettiest of them all, and it IS the most durable. A drop test was conducted from 4 feet, and the Ethiopian opal is the only opal that did not crack.

I have an Ethiopian opal and was told not to get it wet at all. Water will ruin it. It’s an opal from le vian.
I would definitely dry it off, but it shouldn't RUIN it to get it wet. And don't leave it in water.
Lab opal is still opal, synthetic opal is a mimic made of plastic or glass.
