2020 Chevy Equinox | A Dream or a Nightmare?

  • We review the new 2020 Chevy Equinox one of GMs best selling products. To understand the new SUV we dig a bit deeper into the older model to discuss the pros and cons. While it makes sense to look at the used market, given the current economy the new Equinox may have some reliability and design advantages. The problem is always competition, there are other SUVs like the Kia Telluride, Mazda CX5, Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV, and Ford Escape that are also attractive.

I’m a Tech at a Chevy dealer in Florida, and I have to say we rarely have any problems with the 2.0L. The 1.5L on the other hand is terrible, have seen quite a few of them with cracked pistons due to detonation. They’re right, avoid it like the plague. The 9 speed is a gamble though, hasn’t been in production long enough to see issues. Just make sure if you have one you change the fluid often, like every 50,000mi.

With that being said you will spend all the money you saved on gas when you need to replace the turbo at 100,000mi. Also, I don’t care what any engineer tells you, a forced induction engine will never last as long as naturally aspirated. Especially if you follow Chevys “oil life monitor!”

The reason they have a 38k MSRP and offer 10k off, rather than pricing it at 28k, is just to get financing approved.
If you come to the dealership with a trade in that is 8k underwater and shit credit, no bank is gonna let you roll that into a 36k total loan with only a 28k depreciating asset behind it. The Loan to Value ratio is way to high. But need a 36k loan with "38k" asset behind it... You're Approved! 👍

After your final remarks, I just had to add this comment in opposition: We had our 2013 Equinox LTZ fully equipped model for right on 6 years and 72,000 miles, and in all that time, I replaced a set of tires at 60,000 miles, and a battery right at 5 years. Those were the *only* things that went wrong with that vehicle (no brake job (and the brakes were still OK when we sold to a dealer), no headlamps out, no interior lights or controls issues, etc. etc. It was without question the *most reliable* vehicle we have ever owned (prior was 2000 high-end Honda Odyssey, that had *many* issues...). We likely would have traded for the 2020 model Equinox if we had not moved to the EV side, with the Nissan Leaf, and then added the Tesla Model Y when I did a KBB sale of the Equinox to a local Ford dealer. In fact, the KBB listed price was $10,850, and the dealer thought our Equinox was in such good shape that he offered $11,000 on the spot. Just sayin'... :-)

I have not driven the 2.0 but honestly, I don't see why the performance of the 1.5 is discounted...it runs on regular fuel, gets better mileage and honestly, has more than enough performance to outrun most traffic up to 80 mph...and why would you need to drive beyond that on a regular basis in California? We like it a lot. We paid out the door with the outrageous California taxes and license fees 24k.

During my 36 years of driving I've purchased 14 vehicles. Some domestic and some foreign brands. A few of the foreign
made in the US. One Pontiac and three Chevy's. All four had gaps and misaligned panels. Issues with engines and transmissions.
Even faulty computer programming on the last one with no repair possible. That was it for me. No help ever from GM or the dealership. I tried very hard to stay loyal.
Watching the sloppy adhesive on the bottom of the Equinox brings back "happy " memories for me. I do not believe that this car company has really changed . Is it the company's philosophy that lacks or the zero bride in the making of these cars ?

    • @PrizeJ
      @PrizeJ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It's a planned obsolescence thing. Most of the Amstican car brands do not build their vehicles to last, they make them so you will have to buy another once you are done with your current one. Japanese brands, or even Hyundai(which is Korean) all bud their cars to last practically forever if you take care of them. The European brands even do pretty good with their building for the future...even if they do have their issues. Nothing last forever, but you shouldn't have to put more money and work into maintaining your car than you have to.

Glad to see you somewhat approve of a now 3 year old model. The 2021 refresh was supposed to launch in August, but as every plant is currently down in NA, I'm sure that will be pushed back. We started building this generation MY18 in January of 2017 here in Canada. We were the sole producer of the 2 previous generations and worked 8 years of mandatory OT because they were so popular. GM now builds this model at a plant in Mexico as well. I'm genuinely surprised how you much you hate them, as any feedback I have personally have, has been positive. I do agree with your statement that the 2 previous gens lacked decent corrosion protection. For this generation they put in automation in our plant to apply the underbody "sealer". This particular model may have been produced in Mexico? as I can see that it has been brushed on. Anyway, I was excited to see this review of a product I have put my blood sweat and tears into for 15 years, and glad to see it passed the "cookie cutter" test. BTW is Jack your brother? You guys looks and sound identical. Keep up the good work! Sincerely, an unemployed Assembly worker.

As the owner of a 2011 chevy equinox LT1 with the 2.4 GDI I really appreciate the review. I really like the 2011 model in terms of comfort, cargo space and utility. When I bought the car it was less than 3 yrs old with 26k km or 16k miles. I bought the car for $20k Canadian. 2 months ago I replaced the timing chain and cooler lines. I do my own repairs so that was like $400 Can in parts, other than doing the brakes once and tires, That's all i have spent.
The car has 150k km and I should be able to drive it for a couple more years. The sound system in it is pretty good, it's the pioneer system with a subwoofer. I tend to buy GM vehichles used due to the depreciation and I don't mind working on them. All cars break down at some point.

Im leasing a 2020 equinox, I believe the base trim level but its just with AWD, and I must say I am extremely impressed with chevy on this vehicle, really made me question all the hate GM has gotten through the years. I have minimal complaints about this SUV, for me I found it super comfortable, more comfortable than 90% of the competition out there, more comfortable than toyotas IMO. Infotainment works perfectly for me, I havent had a sun glare issue like the one that is mentioned in this video and its been super sunny lately where I live. The sound quality to me doesnt sound bad at all but then again I never tested the competitions sound systems. To me I hear the sound loud and clear, I dont hear any distortion so who knows. Otherwise, I love my equinox, the interior has an awesome style to it but its also not overstyled which I love. Its extremely quiet and comfortable inside etc. Also it has great gas mileage.
Now my only true complaints with the equinox is that, 1) the 1.5L turbo engine feels very weak and anemic, makes merging on the highway difficult at times, also the engine stop/start feature is very annoying. Otherwise its only one complaint because you have the option of getting the stronger 2L turbo engine.
Other than that though, this SUV drives very nice and smooth, transmission works good and is pretty consistent too. Good job GM for finally making something great and able to compete with other manufacturers.

Hi - have a couple of questions:
    1) the 2.0L requires premium gas, why, and is it worth getting that engine when you're not pulling a trailer and just doing city driving?
    2) given the exposed undercarriage, should you get undercoating (what is best, pay at the dealer?)?
    3) given the past problems, what would be the best extended warranty option, especially for light users (can you just buy more years and keep the miles the same?)?
    Thanks!

I worked at Hertz RAC from 2011-2016. The equinox was my go to SUV if I needed a rental for 2 reasons, they always had sirius/XM and the front seats were insanely comfortable for a fat and tall guy like me. They had tons of thigh support and were just firm enough. The one thing that made this SUV better then most, for me at least, was taken away. I ended up renting one of these new Equinoxes in LAX over 2019 holidays. The front seats in these were so bad, the seats are too short and the bolsters are too close like Jack said at 2:31.

I don't get the hate either but everyone has their opinions about cars they never owned. I have a 2016 Equinox with 105,000 miles and the biggest problem I had so far was the vvt cams, which I just replaced. So far so good! My wife has a 2020 and loves it. I was on the fence until I actually drove it tonight....now I want one lol.

@@PatrickJTezak How much was it to replace the vvt cams?

@@prettygirlj6601 I think I paid about $100 total for both cams at O'Reilly auto parts. I'm not mechanically inclined but after a few TH-cam videos I just changed them myself and saved a few hundred bucks lol. It's not hard to do at all if you need to change them.

Great review. We’ll likely buy one. Our 2013 has 110k on her and we have done zero repairs other than routine maintenance. Ours has the 4 cylinder... again no issues. Might go with rust proofing the undercarriage given the issues you have raised with the ‘20.
    Go Chevy!

One of these with the 1.5 turbo was assigned to me at work. It was reasonably quiet, it had nice turn-in, a nice ride and I found the power adequate for the average driver. But they are correct about the radio sound quality, it had none.

The chevy equinox is still the car that scared the shit out of me when i drove it through the carwash and the roof dented from the pressure of the dryer. Luckily it bent back.

I got really sad when the “In The Shoppe” shot came in and it no longer said without Turbowski. I guess he’s phased out for good now 😔

I enjoyed your review on the Equinox, GM sadly is unlikely to sell me one. But I really enjoyed the song "Black Betty" by the "Caravan Palace" screened during the video. Thanks for the suggestion. Keep doing your videos.

With how low interest rates are right now I was thinking about trading in or selling my 2018 for the 2020....should I do that? Is that a good idea?
