    Friends of mine who have built these cookers have taken the time to add a layer of fire brick along the bottom and sides to prevent burn outs from continuos high heat of the coals. One even took the time to cut the fire brick with angles to eliminate gaps in the circular structure followed by a rebar grate to hold the coals up from the bottom. Vents also help in keeping the coals burning, placed low on both sides of the barrel.

    I like lining the bottom with half thickness firebrick, including the lower sides. You'll need to do some cutting with the angle grinder but its well worth it.

    What if you don't have a welder? Can you just screw everything in as a replacement?

    • @LumumbaMonologues
      @LumumbaMonologues  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can indeed achieve a similar result by replacing the welding spots with flush countersunk screws. You may have to be more creative with the legs and how you connect up all the sides but in theory you can achieve the same outcome or go for a more ridged rectangular frame that the barrel can sit on. The chimney may present some difficulty as a sealed corner joint but if you can wrangle a curved piece of steel piping, an 'elbow joint' or recycled wood burner chimney you could create a more fixed connection to the barrel body. Hope this helps. Happy building/BBQin'👍

      I used some grills from an old BBQ that sat nicely in the bottom of the barrel a good 6 inches from the bottom of the barrel which the charcoal sat on nicely with enough space underneath for good airflow. I also added an additional air hole on the opposite side to the chimney side (around 40mm in diameter) to allow airflow from both sides👍

    Hello guys, This DIY video is really interesting and useful,
    So, when I made my own Barrel barbecue it helps me a lot, but I have just some questions about the painting of the barrel Inside and Outside, Which kind of paint can I use to avoid rust ?
    Can I use an antirust paint inside the barrel or a bomb paint will be suffisant ?
    I need just few advices to make my barrel prettier
    Thanks

  • @paulvdb6365
    @paulvdb6365 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    i'm wondering something, you made a cheminey for the burned gases but, from where comes from the fresh air ?? with this configuration, it can't work

    • @LumumbaMonologues
      @LumumbaMonologues  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Paul Vdb There are 2 holes with caps on standard barrels, so the larger hole was used as the chimney hole and the smaller hole as an 'airflow' hole. I did add another hole on the other side (which isn't in the video) about 40mm diameter which creates airflow from both sides and with the charcoal raised up off the bottom on the barrel the air is sucked underneath the charcoal and works just fine and maintains temperature👍

    Seems a bit too much effort for what you want to achieve. No need for a welder AT ALL. This can be made with an angle grinder, drill , some nuts & bolts and some rods for legs. No welding, no messing. It is less than an hours work. Removing the paint is easy when your burn it clean the first time you light it.

    I've heard that it can be dangerous to cut into a drum because there is a chance of explosion, depending on what has been in it. How can you avoid this?

    • @justinklein2674
      @justinklein2674 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are worried you can always fill it right full of water. Water will push out all fumes that can catch fire. And just cut into it with the water inside.

    • @spicysideofreena
      @spicysideofreena 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As Justin has said previously, just fill it full of water and this pushes out whatever it is inside, always best to empty the water out first before, especially if you're using electric power tools to do the cutting. With regards to explosions though, you won't have this issue with a bog standard oil drum because the only thing you'll have in there is oil.

    • @LumumbaMonologues
      @LumumbaMonologues  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The original paint was't high temperature paint and could potentially give off toxic fumes which is not ideal especially around food. Also, when cutting and welding metal (which also generates high temperatures) you want it as clean and paint free as possible. It also provides a better surface for applying the high temperature paint at the end. Happy building/BBQing 👍

    @davidtoney8399 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    What would you estimate the cost of the materials?

    • @LumumbaMonologues
      @LumumbaMonologues  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +David Toney If you have all of the tools and welding equipment then I reckon you can build it for around £100. The cost of the Barrel, box section, angle steel, chimney steel and door seal strips is relatively cheap (around £35-40) if you buy from a steel merchants rather than a DIY store. The biggest costs are the spray paint (£9-11 per can) and the Stainless steel grill sheet which was £36. The additional costs are things like nuts and bolts for the door, the door chain and extra angle grinder disks if needed. Depending on what you already have and where you source materials you can keep costs down. Barrel BBQ/grill Smokers of this kind & size retail at around £250-£400 so your making a big saving and the feeling of making your own BBQ is priceless😉

  • @moinmeister6290
    @moinmeister6290 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Can I smoke with it or just normal bbq ???

    • @cavemanjoe7972
      @cavemanjoe7972 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To smoke with it you'd want to make a firebox out of sheet steel, cut a hole in the bottom side of the barrel on the opposite side as the chimney stack, cut a matching hole in the top of the back or side of the firebox, and weld it to the barrel.
      Since these barrels are thin, you'd be fine using 12 gauge or 1/8" sheet for the firebox. No point overbuilding it too much. You'll want a fire basket in the firebox to hold charcoal, and a grill above that to hold a pan of soaked wood chips (I like using apple wood).
      Lastly, you'll want the legs to be wider, and permanently attached since the firebox will make the barrel a bit side-heavy, depending on how you make it.
      Hope this helps.

    This I must try with my everlast equipment. Thankfully I've got a plasma cutter.

      +takie32 I did consider it but I just don’t have the time 😉 I’m really happy with my one of a kind Barrel Boy and I would encourage anyone to build their own and customise it to their needs. Happy building/BBQing 👍

      Agreed on the welds. Also, why not use the bandsaw to make ALL cuts, not just the round tube.

    Not gonna learn to weld just to make a grill. Going to make a UDS Smoker instead.

    How to build an Oil Drum Barrel BBQ first you will need 1000 dollars worth of tools

    • @jhitt79

      I don't know about $1000 worth of tools, but there are at least 4 nice Weber kettle grills for sale on Craigslist near me for less than $50.

    1 year later - how is it holding up?

      Barrel Boy is doing great. Still structurally sound and holds temperature very well. We touched up the paint a couple of weeks ago. It has brought joy and happiness to many a social gathering and has been used for grilling, oven cooking and low and slow and he will be used to cook Xmas dinner 👍
