End your stove pipe right at the top of the barrel where it connects do not extend it into the barrel and it will burn much more efficiently. Make a 3 inch tall collar out of a piece of pipe one size up from your stove pipe diameter that the stove pipe can snugly fit in and weld it on top of the barrel where you would insert the stove pipe. drill three holes around the collar equal distance around for sheet metal screws (In case you want to take the chimney down later for storage). Weld a steel lip or some kind of other seal around the top door and put high temp woodstove gasket on it for better air seal you are losing vac-cum here for the chimney draw. ( you dont have to do this on the bottom door but its a good idea with air flow valves). If you can extend the stove pipe another four feet in height it will greatly improve your chimney draw and burn very hot and fast and efficient. i love your design and was going to build one for myself before I ran across yours. I LOVE THE PORTABLE IDEA...VERY SMART and since its not connected to the house like the old barrel stove/incinerator I used to have no pesky inspections from the city. you have a buoyancy problem with the pipe a foot into the barrel and the air leakage in the top door and for more suction power you should have four more feet of stove pipe. the power of the draw is determined by the height of the chimney. I was in the chimney trades for 20 years and worked on and built a lot of barrel stoves thats how I know this. Do this and it will purr like a jet engine. Put air flow control valves on the bottom door and ,make it air tight and you can control how fast it will burn and easily shut it down if it gets to hot. Again I REALLY love your design and I'm going to make one for myself. thank you for the video -- Wayne
Burn barrels have been outlawed in most areas for many years but the biggest problem is because they very thin and along with heat and moisture they have a short life and when they collapse you have a mess to clean up. A motor and brick fire place would be much better. Nice video.

The grate at the bottom with a door to remove ash is a very cool idea. In my country we are supposed to take our burn barrels to the county dump and pay to empty then. Not an easy task if you don't own a truck. I wouldn't burn plastics in the barrel because they emit some pretty nasty chemicals into the environment but for paper and wood this would be very handy.
Great way to safely burn lawn debris and clean building material scrap (natural framing scraps). Keeps the fly away embers from burning the forest down..

Way to much work. Cut the top off . Shoot 12 or 14 rounds of 45 through the barrel for air & use & old grill grate on top to hold debris in. Also , wouldn't burn the plastic , pisses the neighbors off.
I have a news flash for the critics on here, the vast majority of plastic waste (yes even today) is not recyclable and is in fact burned because it cannot possibly all be landfilled. Mkay, you're welcome for the real environmental education you have received today. Also in many places people cook with burned waste because they are poor and they cannot afford any better options. So let's give the man a little break, all right?
Here in Georgia, we just take an old barrel and cut the top out. Then take a hatchet and knock some gashes in the side and set it on some bricks. Paper, cardboard or wood and burn it up. No plastic though.
Just a few adjustments and you could use it as a smoker - great for chicken, turkey and a host of other great recipes - little charcoal and some apple wood! And to follow others below in burning any poly and most inks it is a huge link to most cancer
When you fit the hinges, do not just use sight to align them. Rivet the middle hole of the hinge on one side for both hinges, use your steel ruler to align the edges then rivet the other side of each hinge. After you have the hinges aligned and secured, proceed to rivet all holes. All the comments on pollution and safety in re-using drums also apply.
Hinges are aligned already since they are applied to a solid base before cutting. The only thing you have to worry about is centre alignment over the pre cut, using sloppy hinges and don't use aluminum rivets. They will melt.
I dont think you have to tell this guy anything about building anything or even how to make a video, both excellent. Stop burning plastics, they belong in landfills for a thousand years, or in the ocean
The barrel if it had contained oil, it must be absolutely clean OR filled with water up to just below where you are going to be grinding and making sparks, leaving as little air space as possible. ANY oil vapor in the large barrel area can be ignited by the heat and sparks of grinding and explode VERY powerfully.
I don't do near that much work making my burn barrels. I cut out the top, shoot it full of 12 gauge shotgun slug holes, set it up on concrete blocks and start burning my trash.
An high school shop teacher allowed students to use empty oil drums to support material they were cutting with an oxyacetylene cutting torch. When the drum was penetrated with the flame the vapors in the drum exploded, killing two students and the shop teacher. Be careful with empty oil drums!
Back in 1952 my mom and dad bought a new house in Ontario California, All the houses in the housing division had a concrete incinerator for burning trash in the back yard. They were deemed illegal in the early 60's due to pollution. I take it they are not too concerned about air quality where you live.
Burning plastic and any kind of garbage are prohibited in our country as a way to lessen the toxic chemical in the atmosphere...nice to see your video...
I thought that this is meat smoker. It would be much, much better If you recycled that plastic trash! The smoke from that fire is just as bad as not recycled plastic!
Just a FYI a lot recycling facilities won't take more then half of the crap you put in your recycling bin they just truck what they won't make any money selling off to the land fill. Sorry if I burst your bubble but it's true do some research on your area you might be surprised.

Let me guess. Your movie says it's good to burn plastic. I got to see this misinformation campaign. Unbelievable people still doing what's easy instead of what's right.
I burn everything, plastic, paper, cans, etc. Why pay to have it picked up. At the end of the month I have about a 30 gallon garbage bag of tin cans left to take to the dump. It costs me about a dollar in gas vs, 40 dollars for garbage pickup. I know, your going to ask about the pollution. It's not against the law here and also I DON"T CARE!!!
Basically it's an incinerator. I made one with a lot less work. I did make a grate at the bottom about 4" high and some vent hole around the sides at the bottom and that's it. Works great. Once the fire starts going it almost like an engine. You can see the air current in the flames. Air coming in from the bottom through the barrel and out the top. I do burn paper products and cardboard but don't get busted burning plastics and pressure treated wood.

That's a fantastic way to pollute as long as there's smoke coming out your polluting with burnt plastic and all that lovely ship you have to burn something constantly at like 1,500 degrees before it becomes an incinerator and not just the trash barrel you're going backwards in time
I enjoyed your video and a good use of an old oil drum. I made one very simular and I came upon a problem. The alley rivets melt, I had to drill them out and replace with nuts and bolts. Rivets are good but not near heat. 👍

It's not about hate. It's common sense not to burn plastic. It's bad for you when you breathe the fumes and those horrible products of combustion are toxic. Recycle instead and keep the carbon and chemicals out of the atmosphere.
larry shea Nobody recycles, the recyclers don't even recycle anymore. There's no money in it for them. If you're putting stuff in a recycling bin, it goes to the transfer station and it all gets put in the same pile.

BTW, my Grandfather turned part of his Farm into a Summer Tourism. All us Kids had to do a Summer there. He had 33 gallon barrels cut in half a welded together, and the two halves hinged together. Yep, the Creosoted Post weren’t good enough for him we had to Hot Dip them in Creosote, Fish them into the hinged other Section, then onto a Rebar Rack. If it caught fire, we were supposed to flip the hinged section over onto the dip section.
Hmmm - In Alaska we just find an open ended drum, punch holes in the sides and bottom for air and drainage, put some woven wire screen over the top, sit it on 3 cinder blocks and use it.
Nice video.
~ I have a beer keg which is Stainless and have had it going since almost the mid "0s". Learned not to use the barrel like he did, as Dad did it that way and those drums eventually inevitably fail.
? We had a barrel stove upright in our workshop for the ten years I was there burning wood and coal, last I heard it was still going strong.
Amigo, you just demonstrated in one video how to expose your body to dangerous tools by no wearing the most basic equipment to protect yourself. On top of that, you just gave us a lesson on "How no to handle garbage". I'm pretty sure your neghbours are the ones who dislike your video. Greetings from Toronto.

Burning plastic like a true asshole. Dislike!!
Fuck that let people be unsafe if they like. For all you know this guy could be a professional angle grinder juggler who is building a burn barrel. What’s more important is this fool burning plastic and other junk. If your going to burn garbage at least turn it into gas.
Ok, Karen
Two hours of torment, two hours of cleaning up... then we point the chimney toward the neighbours! LOL
Chimney that even does not work, so he finally gave up using it. Whata' genious!!!
I love how you made a perfect smoker for meat yet used it to burn plastic which if you just hopped in your car and drove to your local recycling centre you could of disposed of in the correct environmentally friendly way. Wish that oil drum still had gas in it when you cut into it
Agreed I was thinking the same thing.
I'll stick with the old cutting the top off and poking a few hole at the bottom of the barrel to let the air in. Oh, if you live in the UK, you would never get away with burning plastics. It's completely illegal here and face fines.
I'm pretty sure it's illegal and punishable by fines everywhere here in the states. I should have known this guy was a moron when I saw him cutting and welding metal while wearing flip-flops.
@@floydsmith2296 Why would you be concerned by him not wearing proper ppe? Maybe people should be allowed to decide for them selves how safe they want to be when they will be the only one injured?
Pretty fancy burn barrel. We just poke a few holes in the side, (Usually with a revolver) and throw the garbage in to burn it. I figured you were making a smoker/BBQ. Very nice, not critisizing!
We used a sharp pick axe. I like your idea better.
Not sure what to say, glad to see your planet friendly.
Much rather see that plastic recycled .... not burned. Plastic gives off some noxious fumes when burnt.
Like the friendly sarcasm.
Don't burn plastic, fool
@@johnjacobjinglehimerschmid3555 Have you ever been to a plastic recycling plant or a garbage disposal land fill or how about the waste burning sites? Yeah, you'd think this guy is saving the planet compared to those facilities. There is much worse chemicals used than burning some plastic, also fyi if you make the burning process a little hotter you burn most of the pollutants and will in fact make the process cleaner than your car exhaust.
nice to see people making stuff which serves a purpose out of junk just lying around, and good to see that when you are doing so you were wearing full PPE equipment, tee shirt , shorts and of course steel toe cap flipflops, an accident waiting to happen when you are using angle grinders for cutting steel oil drums and welding them up , still made a good job of it well done

What the heck is the pipe even for smoke just comes out all over
It was plastic day so it's cool. My city you can burn plastic on Tuesdays. The second Thursday of every month is tire day, the kids love that day for making Smores!
Dang... I sure thought the cool idea was making it a smoker for some good, self smoked grub. Instead it's adding to a problem. Great design, not so much on purpose. That being said , you seem quite skilled my friend.
How about a removable screen or Mesh Cover at the top so hot embers in Sparks don’t get airborne and fly To the neighbors grass or yard and start a fire
Outlawed in Los Angeles 70 years ago...
Way to much work. Cut the top off . Shoot 12 or 14 rounds of 45 through the barrel for air & use & old grill grate on top to hold debris in. Also , wouldn't burn the plastic , pisses the neighbors off.
Don’t cha know every time plastic is burned, a dog scoots his ass across the road?! Quote from a very drunk adult to a child around 1995.
I was going to say cut the top off and drill some holes around the bottom but I like your idea what way better
That's how we do it. Only an old bicycle rim/spokes for the "lid".

I fast forward and thought great! He's making a smoker! Oh a trash barrel, never mind.
lol. I was thinking the same thing😃
Me too, Lot of trouble for a incinerator? Did not think anyone used them anymore. Then to burn plastic. Disgraceful.
@@baobo67 right we burn paper but common plastic
With all that plastic it's definitely a smoker. LOL 😆
WOW! You Made a Burn Barrel? Damn, Like No One has Ever Had that idea...
NO way !!!
Doesn't look like he's "poor" by any stretch of the imagination.
Nothing like a little plastic smoked chicken on a warm summer evening........hmmmm, good!
I feel bad for your neighbors.
If it works, it's right. It's a garbage barrel after all.....
Any time I see amateurs doing hot work on petroleum barrels I cringe.
too be honest i thought he was making a barbie or a smoker. really deflated

Well we wouldn't be watching the video if you were right, would we?
Wow! A burn barrel. I'm sure no one has ever thought of that before 🙄
Your neighbors must hate you. I know the feeling. My neighbors hate me. I love your work.
I don't do near that much work making my burn barrels. I cut out the top, shoot it full of 12 gauge shotgun slug holes, set it up on concrete blocks and start burning my trash.
You should have titled this, "You could have a blast, making a stove out of a 55 gallon drum.
8:17 how did that masonry bit work for you on that mild steel? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Bwaaaaah. I wonder what it feels like to catch the hairs on your toe knuckles on fire?
Wow, a burn barrel. Awesome idea.
An high school shop teacher allowed students to use empty oil drums to support material they were cutting with an oxyacetylene cutting torch. When the drum was penetrated with the flame the vapors in the drum exploded, killing two students and the shop teacher. Be careful with empty oil drums!
Fill it with water and all is good!
Better yet don’t waste water and just hook a hose up to exhaust from an engine. No oxygen no fire.
At least the shop teacher will nor face criminal charges.
Back in 1952 my mom and dad bought a new house in Ontario California, All the houses in the housing division had a concrete incinerator for burning trash in the back yard. They were deemed illegal in the early 60's due to pollution. I take it they are not too concerned about air quality where you live.
That seems like a lot of work to make a trash burning barrel
Burning plastic and any kind of garbage are prohibited in our country as a way to lessen the toxic chemical in the atmosphere...nice to see your video...
wtf!, a person of this engineering skill should know not to burn that stuff. Where is your head boy?
Look at how he’s dressed then ask again.
why can't he burn it .
so you have to be dressed a certain way to work at home.
You can't smoke meat in a barrel that had chemicals in it. As for burning plastic, I do it at least twice a week when I burn my trash.
A MEAT smoker...from a oil barrel?
@@Momentaryghost I'd rather it in a landfill than have the toxic fumes in the air.

I burn everything, plastic, paper, cans, etc. Why pay to have it picked up. At the end of the month I have about a 30 gallon garbage bag of tin cans left to take to the dump. Have I gone back 20 years these have been banned in South Australia in our area for at least 20 plus years .
And Victoria mate and fair dinkum a bloody good move to. Remember when the Australian suburbs were polluted with smoke every weekend?
Basically it's an incinerator. I made one with a lot less work. I did make a grate at the bottom about 4" high and some vent hole around the sides at the bottom and that's it. Works great. Once the fire starts going it almost like an engine. You can see the air current in the flames. Air coming in from the bottom through the barrel and out the top. I do burn paper products and cardboard but don't get busted burning plastics and pressure treated wood.
Tree huggers don’t burn plastic! I’m sure the neighbors love inhaling toxic fumes from this guys house! Lucky for him he’s not my neighbor!
I had a neighbor like you once I told him to go over there somewhere and STFU.
He made an incinerator and used POP rivets for the hinges and the bolt, the temperature could get high enough to melt the Aluminium rivets.
they surely will !

~ Thanks. I figured the Alum. ones wouldn't hold up for the long haul. My rivets kit will wait for less temperate work.

I'm laughing because here in El Salvador I just bought one already open and just burned everything right inside the barrel, no extra gadgets...

Haven't seen one of these in a long time. We used to burn coke in them to stay warm.
I like your design. I've used burn barrels all my life the one thing they all have incomen is that rust out from intense heat. I'd like to see what it looks like after a year of use. The grait you bit on the bottom may prolong its use. Good job.
P.S. haters will hate.
It's not about hate. It's common sense not to burn plastic. It's bad for you when you breathe the fumes and those horrible products of combustion are toxic. Recycle instead and keep the carbon and chemicals out of the atmosphere.

Nobody recycles, the recyclers don't even recycle anymore. There's no money in it for them. If you're putting stuff in a recycling bin, it goes to the transfer station and it all gets put in the same pile.
@@ralfie8801 Perhaps yes, in some cases. That keeps it out of the environment and out of the air and water. I pay to have my waste recycled or placed in a landfill, their choice. I am certain it will not have to be delt with by another ever again. What is the best flawed alternative?

I was a janitor in a high school and a teacher was demonstrating welding on top of the oil drum instead of a welding table. A pinhole burn through cause Caused an explosion from the fumes in the drum and propelled the lid up through the teachers. I heard the explosion a quarter mile away. I built my first barrel stove in 1972, long before anyone had heard of them. It was a 60 gal heavy gauge industrial barrel... I was just a kid... (well 20) but it heated my garage for years!
You are right about the heavier gauge steel on the old barrels. But you are a little off on the comment" before anyone had heard of them". Mid 60's a lot of farmers and repair shops built these using 45 imp Gal barrel with a 15 imp Gal grease drum on connected top and an 8 inch pipe through it. Had free used oil? These units were 20 to 30 years old at that time. Hard to come up with something the fore fathers or mothers have not already done. Just say'n

I thought you were making a smoker but you just need some shelves and a draft.
Aren’t you in Britain? Huge Fines here in Maryland for burning Garbage, and Building Materials. On top of that, you’re need a Burn Permit, which is only available from after Labor Day to Memorial Day, cost $25.00, must have the burn pile inspected and the permit is good for 60 Days to burn cut brush, and cut brush only.
If I did that, the EPA would fine me thousands.
great environmental invention !!
Empty barrels can explode when cut, clean thouroughly!
Good idea. Rolling it under a dry area after it cools down will make it last a long time. Rain and ashes together eat up the steel.
I seriously thought you were turning it into a bbq barrel! Waste of time and that isn't good for our environment!

Hmmm - In Alaska we just find an open ended drum, punch holes in the sides and bottom for air and drainage, put some woven wire screen over the top, sit it on 3 cinder blocks and use it. After a couple of years, when the rust goes through the drum we do it again - without all the fancy smoke stack, wheels, doors and such.
Hahaha, if I was to do this where I live, I would be thrown in jail. Very taboo to be burning anything in our yards even if in an enclosed container.
