McLaren didn’t lose Monza when Oscar passed Lando. They lost when the strategy team failed to judge the winning approach. Exactly. They were 1-2 after the first round of pit stops but then cooked their tyres setting fastest laps for the next 20 laps. If they looked after their tyres they would have won.

David and Co, I love that move but how would it have turned out if it had been Schumacher, or Vettel? Oscar is a bright lad and I believe took into account Lando‘s temperament. Lando needs to change that temperament so that liberties and brilliant moves like this don’t happen because the other driver knows the outcome. Just my very humble opinion.
True. Oscar is you yield or we crash. Lando now needs to drive elbows out with his teammate as well. He sticks to the papaya rules a lot unlike oscar. Even last year oscar almost took out Lando and it was a huge issue at McLaren.
@@neetsk12Lando can’t drive with his elbows out as long as he’s trying to chase down max’s points, Oscar is smart to utilize that to his advantage. When you hold a temper it makes things worse, that’s when Lando starts to crack down at Monza (pit entry, etc.)

@@brianchase8968 Norris got into the lead After they gave Him the prefferred strategy when he was behind Oscar, allowing the undercut to protect Lando from the cars behind. Unless theres a contract designating number 1 and 2 drivers. The preffered strategy should always go to the team car leading at the time. So whoever it is, let that be the case and if the second driver wants to fight for the lead without risking both cars so be it. Absolutely let them race, as long as they dont take each other off.

I'd forgotten Oscar had to take 15 months off before driving for McLaren. Which makes how well he did last year, once he had a decent car, that much more impressive.
Every Racer who became World Champion is very selfish - Senna and Max both said that they don't come her to be second but to be first. Can Lando be like that? I doubt it. Oscar doesn't have that problem.
True. Nice guys come last. Needs to drive elbows out, needs to drive in a way people fear you. Like max drives when he goes mad Max. And Lando can do it, he actually gave a good agressive fight with Max in Austria, now he needs to do it with oscar as well.
Yep.. and McLaren chose to employ Oscar because they wanted to have to two Number 1 drivers. If they wanted to have a safe number 2 driver they would have chosen someone else. e.g. Bottas, Perez I love that they've done this. I should be a Lando fan, as he's from Bristol and so am I, but Oscar seems so laid back and very fast, that he's becoming my favourite driver.
Then Lando has to go them. He stuck with a crap mclaren car with the promise they back him and help deliver him a world championship in the future. If they're taking part of their backing and sharing it equally with his team mate then this just harms his world championship chances. Having 2 number 1 drivers ONLY works if your team is totally dominant with no other team on your heals. This is not how it currently is, so back Lando now while you have the chance. They could be 3rd or 4th best team next year. If so Landos gone I'm afraid.
It doesn’t work that way. You can insist on equal status, but in Formula One, you have to help your teammates at times for the sake of the team. No team is going to sign a contract like that, and Webber isn’t dumb enough to ask.
I think Lando knows that Oscar is a genuine threat to him. Oscar has improved more in 2 years than Lando has in 5. And the speed at which both are evolving as drivers, come 2026 or even 2025, I think Oscar will beat Lando. And Lando's mentality of regrets is only gonna let him down. Meanwhile Oscar is just pure and utter stoicism.
It is true Lando had some growing up and maturing to do but be fair. It was only last season the Mclaren came alive, prior to that it was a heap of junk. Oscar has come in at the right time to an ever-improving car. He is a great driver and deserves it , but he has been lucky to have a seat in a good car that has now evolved into a great car, so soon in his F1 career.
My god you lot are frustrating. Do they not teach critical analysis any more? The car wasn't good for all those year Lando was with them. Lando stuck with an under performing team because they promised him a good car and a world championship with them in the future. Oscar arrived at the team only a few months before they delivered a good car capable of podiums. Oscar is great, but you have to compare apple with apples. Think.
@@exert2020 seems like you haven't used critical analysis much yourself. The reason I made my comment is that Lando has had opportunities throughout the years where he could've gotten a win. But he didn't. Simply because of the mistakes HE made. Not because of the car or the strategy. Oscar is far more level headed than Lando and by next year he will either be on par or surpass Lando in terms of racecraft too. But imo, he already has.
@@flamingburitto But Lando has raced many more races, in a car which hasn't ever been dominant until mid way through last season. So of course he's made mistakes in 5 or so years in the sport. I must add, hardly any, if any massive or embarrassing mistakes. He's had a slight poor start here, a little rear slide there. Mostly it has actually been strategy that's cost him good results or a car which doesn't perform. They had issues with extreme tyre wear for a while so he had things like that to battle with. Can't remember the channel but someone did a video in last few days analysing all races since Miami to see what opportunities were truly lost by Lando vs the Team. It found most were caused by the team or the car simply wasn't as dominant as people imagined. You have to be honest, it was only in the last race where we saw Oscar genuinely drive on par in terms of overall pace as Lando. That's great. I'm not hating on Oscar at all. I think he's doing great. But you lot always treat these things like console wars or MC vs DC. 'You have to pick only one!!'. Fact is they're both doing well in a fairly fast, easy to drive car. That's it. You act like Oscar is some super hero for keeping up with Lando and that Landos totally failing unless he's able to push the car far beyond what it can do. End of the day both drivers are doing great. They're not in an absolutely dominant car yet so 1-2s can't be taken for granted. As for Oscar being better than Lando in the future...maybe? Who knows. You seem to be basing this on flimsy stuff. Like Oscar didn't have a bad start 2 races ago. Forgetting he had horrible tyre management until recently. He made mistakes all over the place, dipping into the gravel a few times. Then got handed a win when the telemetry tells us Lando was by far the fastest car over the entire race...absolutely dominated him...and he wasnt that far ahead simply from pitting first btw. I can analyse fine. You seem to want to be a fortune teller for some reason. Notice I don't do that.
Good to see you back commentating. Tbh though I am tired of all the Lando Norris hate atm - I still think he is an awesome driver with tonnes of potential and a really decent guy too.
Lando and Oscar are like two salesmen in a company undercutting each other to try and secure a sale. The company needs to sort out what’s best for the company and then execute that plan.
McLaren's come a long way from the days when Martin Brundle said they "didn't have the power to pull the skin off a rice pudding". Good on them - I'm loving the competition!
If Lando was within striking distance of- an handful of points - then it would make sense to impose team orders. But he’s 62 points behind with 8 races left. Anyone “winning” a WDC that way is not worthy of the WDC, and Lando knows this.
Ferrari took a gamble with one pit stop Charles could have easily blown a tire on the last lap they didn’t and won if they had two pit stops Oscar would have won. I think Ferrari new up grades is about protecting the tires so we could see more of the one pit stop by them. .
Does he deserve the championship if he constantly needs to be let by by his faster teammate? I mean if you are a World champion level driver freaking prove it and win the championship.
It's simple: 1. If you have competition from any other team, you back your leading driver. 2. If you are dominant above all other teams and nobody can touch you then let the teammates race. The reality is we are in a number 1 situation currently. Does this not make sense to anybody. It just seems so obvious. The way mclaren are acting now may sound all fair and moral but to me this is simply actively working against your own chances to win a drivers title. Its madness. Utter madness you have an f1 team almost annoyed one of their drivers may win a championship. Like keeping harmony between driver managers is more important. Bizarre. There was once a time an f1 team would do ANYTHING for a championship.
@@chequeredflag16who's let who by? As far as I can recall only Lando has slowed down to a snails pace to let Oscar past. Have you not seen the data from Oscars ONLY win? The telemetry shows Lando was by far the fastest driver over the entire race, all stints. Yes he pitted first so a few seconds advantage, but he pulled away from Oscar on track by more than that anyway...far more...miles ahead! Lando should not have let him by. Using your logic if Oscar is a world championship driver he should have caught up with him team mate and passed on track. The most dodgy win...pathetic. Lando was on pole, fastest driver, on track to be world championship winner, but the team and Oscar threw points away simply because of a poor Pitstop call from Oscars side, which has nothing to do with Lando. This is all utter madness. (If you were saying the opposite of what I thought I apologise. Your response wasn't that clear)
Oscar’s overtake was great but was made ‘easy’ because Lando didn’t expect it from a teammate. He typically should have rolled the car a bit more under braking as he saw Oscar’s car nose passing to the right. I’m pretty sure he would have done that had the car behind him been from any other team.
Oscar Piastri is still #4 in WDC points. Ferrari will continue to split those two because they are Not working as a team. Ferrari might take the Constructor's Championships.
So many triggered LN fans in the comments that can't handle wheel-to-wheel racing, like you would think Piastri punted him off back to Zandvoort or something.
Triggered?... not really. The problem with McClaren asking Lando to concede his lead position due to team orders is that it requires consistency; that breeds indecision later on in the season, when he's looking for his teammate to reciprocate the courtesy... if it doesn't come, then you are developing a relationship similar to the Senna / Prost situation at McClaren.
they asked him to concede position because they wrongly undercut oscar 😭 lando could’ve conceded the position early and overtook him if he had the pace, but he didn’t do that. it was oscar’s race from the beginning and mclaren knew that
For the start-I'm not McLaren fan and not Landos fan, but it is still painful to watch them flushing down the toilet WDC for Lando. Because just like they lost to Ferrari, fighting each other, same way they will lose to Verstapen.
21:00 it’s not a matter of ‘this year is your turn next year is his turn’ - they should be free to race _but_ It’s it comes point in the year where they have to prioritize one driver or neither driver will win the title (like happened in 2007), they need to prioritize their leading driver. This year that’s Lando. And Oscar has got to have the confidence to be comfortable with that precedent being set, knowing that he’ll be the one benefitting from it in the future.
I know what you mean. . .but I think Lando is a racer too. . .in the moments he's a racer anyway. But mentally it seems like he has a really difficult time off the track. And that can affect a guy ON the track if it gets bad enough. In the end I do think his marketability is more important than his overall racing results. . .
Once Oscar did that overtake that had Lando slow a bit to avoid making a collision opening a chance for Charles to also attack and get through to second that when his race win was gone. With Charles in second chasing him he had to use soi much of his tyres (remember he is very bad with tyre management and Charles is very good). A one stop was never going to work for him and Charles gave it a go and it worked! If he had waited just a little bit and attack Lando with DRS such that he just drops to second, there is a very big likely hood that he could have won or even Lando wins. At the end of the day a McLaren Wins!
No he didn’t. Lando stuffed up twice because he overdid the throttle after turn 1 and 4 which allowed first Oscar and then Charles to get past him. Lando was to blame.
With McLaren allowing their drivers to race and battle each other, my mind goes straight back to the 2007 Driver's World Championship. The driver who stands to gain the most from McLaren letting their drivers fight each other is Max Verstappen! Piastri's overtake into the 2nd chicane was greatly added by Norris slamming on his brakes, rather than slamming into the side of Piastri's car - And because Norris had to slam his brakes on, he also lost out to eventual race winner Charles Leclerc. Would David Coulthard be raving about Piastri's overtake on Norris if the two teammates had collided and damaged their car? - Of course not, he'd be declaring it to be a stupid overtake that cost the team dearly. Piastri's overtake on his teammate possibly played a big part in McLaren losing the race! Had he not overtaken Norris, allowing Leclerc to pass Norris as well, but instead, sat behind Norris holding up the pack on lap 1, giving Norris a chance to pull away, chances are McLaren would have won the Italian Grand Prix (and possibly got a 1~2 for the team) As I said at the start of this post, for McLaren it's 2007 all over again. Max Verstappen must be looking forward to winning the WDC again this year - Just as Kimi Raikkonen enjoyed it in 2007! 😄
The reason there is relatively less passing at Monza is because of the very low down force configuration and small rear wings The speed differential between the lead car and the following car is much less than any other circuit on the calendar. This also makes the speed differential with DRS to without the DRS relatively small. This has a compound effect on overtaking as the following car is on the edge of grip due to less downforce and makes it difficult to overtake. That is why..

McLaren didn’t lose Monza when Oscar passed Lando. They lost when the strategy team failed to judge the winning approach. Hamilton summed it up effectively saying that McLaren could have gone 1-2 if they pushed less and drove conservative, boring lead drives - like Verstappen with a big lead but not pushing.
Exactly. They were 1-2 after the first round of pit stops but then cooked their tyres setting fastest laps for the next 20 laps. If they looked after their tyres they would have won.
@@mintoxace5571 I guess it was down to another factor. Not many people realize how much of a mega drive Leclerc pulled off at Monza, and how Ferrari has become a very tire-friendly machine.
@@NERGYStudios it was definitely unexpected that Ferrari pulled off a 1 stopper but that was only possible because Mclaren fried their tires. If they conserved the tires and kept in the front, Ferrari tires would've degraded faster
@@pramitpratimdas8198 clear air, yes. I missed that. Clear air definitely helped Leclerc. It could have been an even more interesting race in that case.

Webber - "I'll honor the agreement." Zero world titles.
Vettel - "Fuck that, me me me." 4 world titles.
History supports having a #1 and #2 driver... only Mercedes could get away with it the one year because there was literally no other competition. Mclaren have let them fight, now it's time to focus on actually winning. Helping your team lose a WDC is a good way to get relegated to mid-field teams.

First time tuning in, this is a quality pod, instant subscribe. Cheers boys
One thing few people are discussing is that Lando has a snap of oversteer after the first chicane that weakened him to Oscar. If he had driven better he wouldn't have been vulnerable in turn 4.
I think he will. We see it against Max in Austria. Now he needs to realize he can do it to his teammate, too.
I vote for more DC, EJ and MW… ripper episode 👍🏻

Oscar is not there to appease the British fans by pandering to Lando.
He is there to race.
Lando needs to get a bit of Mongrel about him. Or hes going to get smashed by Oscar.
Ayrton Senna once said "that once a driver stops going for a gap, he ceases to be a racing driver".
Piastri is a hard nosed racer and I doubt he would get bullied on track by Verstappen, like Lando has been.
Let them Race and let the best man come out on top.

Great episode ….a lot of respect shown to Mark W re his relationship with Oscar ….too easy to put him in the spot and make him feel uncomfortable
Possible exception is Button.
That year it was Brawn’s selfishness that made up for Buttons niceness!
Oscars contract is IRONCLAD with no number 2 or helping teammates EVER! Hence no team orders to give p2 to Lando in Monza… so exciting to watch
Yep.. and McLaren chose to employ Oscar because they wanted to have to two Number 1 drivers. If they wanted to have a safe number 2 driver they would have chosen someone else. e.g. Bottas, Perez
I love that they've done this.
Um weren’t there team orders in Hungary?
It doesn’t work that way. You can insist on equal status, but in Formula One, you have to help your teammates at times for the sake of the team. No team is going to sign a contract like that, and Webber isn’t dumb enough to ask.
@@mikehinford they wanted the best drivers they could get, simple as.
Think.
the car has done 5yrs of development in the last 5 months. its no wonder oscar looks good compared to some of the boats lando drove before
@@exert2020 seems like you haven't used critical analysis much yourself.
DC & EJ interviewing Mr Aussie Grit, reminds of the good old days 2010-2012

Lando and Oscar are like two salesmen in a company undercutting each other to try and secure a sale. The company needs to sort out what’s best for the company and then execute that plan.

If Lando was within striking distance of- an handful of points - then it would make sense to impose team orders.
But he’s 62 points behind with 8 races left.
Anyone “winning” a WDC that way is not worthy of the WDC, and Lando knows this.

If you do that on first lap you better win, the gloves are off lol
Ferrari took a gamble with one pit stop Charles could have easily blown a tire on the last lap they didn’t and won if they had two pit stops Oscar would have won.
I think Ferrari new up grades is about protecting the tires so we could see more of the one pit stop by them. .
"Let them race" apply until one of them has more clear chances to fight for the championship.
"Number One Driver" applies until he starts consistently throwing away wins/points and choking every pole position.
Does he deserve the championship if he constantly needs to be let by by his faster teammate?
I mean if you are a World champion level driver freaking prove it and win the championship.
Then why did Lando have to give back the spot to Oscar I now wish he hadn’t.
It's simple:

What a fun podcast, so glad I discovered this
Oscar’s overtake was great but was made ‘easy’ because Lando didn’t expect it from a teammate. He typically should have rolled the car a bit more under braking as he saw Oscar’s car nose passing to the right. I’m pretty sure he would have done that had the car behind him been from any other team.
Norris: Secures pole position

"You gonna need Oscar in the championship fight", Hungary 2024. Worst lie ever.
Oscar is taking points off Max by getting better positions in each race so Lando closes gap...

Mark Webber is just a top bloke. Completely humble and straight down the line…
My 2 pence worth. Zak's a Racer Oscar's a Racer. Lando's a lovely guy who's quick
I know what you mean. . .but I think Lando is a racer too. . .in the moments he's a racer anyway. But mentally it seems like he has a really difficult time off the track. And that can affect a guy ON the track if it gets bad enough. In the end I do think his marketability is more important than his overall racing results. . .
My first time watching and it was brilliant! That prison joke - savage!
Great show again gents, thank you!!
The main difference between Norris and Piastri is that Piastri knows what it takes to win championships. Formula Renault, F3 and F2.
They had a great chance to have a frank talk with mark and ask specific questions
"they're tractors". hailarious and kindof true. one can hope it will revert more.
Had he not overtaken Norris, allowing Leclerc to pass Norris as well, but instead, sat behind Norris holding up the pack on lap 1, giving Norris a chance to pull away, chances are McLaren would have won the Italian Grand Prix (and possibly got a 1~2 for the team)
As I said at the start of this post, for McLaren it's 2007 all over again.
Max Verstappen must be looking forward to winning the WDC again this year - Just as Kimi Raikkonen enjoyed it in 2007! 😄
Spot on
The reason there is relatively less passing at Monza is because of the very low down force configuration and small rear wings The speed differential between the lead car and the following car is much less than any other circuit on the calendar. This also makes the speed differential with DRS to without the DRS relatively small. This has a compound effect on overtaking as the following car is on the edge of grip due to less downforce and makes it difficult to overtake. That is why..
Great as always gents, thank you….
Let’s not kid ourselves! Webber put that into Oscar’s contract! No second driver!
Majic overtake that put lando in 3 rd place and cost them both the race

All three were beating around the bush. The question about team orders is really about what's written in Piastri's contract, 100%. That they didn't even ask that question is just mind boggling.
so stupid decision McLaren to pull him in for a second pit stop, with 5 sec gap??? was a bad decision for sure. Mr Weber Mark please manage OSCAR to be less shy and if he feels like it to dictate the tire strategy , thank you
Have you seen the Monza tyre deg chart?
His tyres were gone, if he settled for a one stop he would have still been vulnerable to Charles who has better tyre management!
He cooked his tyres trying to stay ahead of his teammate. No way he could do a one stop.
@@KatyFernandez-ee8cz Lando's deg was soo low, dirty was the only problem (just like Oscar suffered in Zandvoort behind Charles) I have feeling if he was leading and in clean air he could have pulled a one stop and given McLaren a shot at winning the race!
