Regarding 8:44 as of Tuesday November 26, 2024, there are still available the 2025 Piedfort Proof Sovereigns featuring the Shield Back design by Jean Baptiste Merlen from 1825. Their limited edition mintage is 1,250 coins priced at £1,445 each. Their current quantity remaining is 278 coins which means 972 have been sold. Piedfort sovereigns have the same diameter as standard sovereigns but piedfort sovereigns have double the thickness of standard sovereigns. Piedfort sovereigns also have the same weight as double sovereigns.
Thank you for your video. Regarding 3:14, the 2025 gold proof sovereign shield design is based on Jean Baptiste Merlen’s 1825 rendition from King George IV's Coat of Arms which included in its center the inescutcheon representing the Kingdom of Hanover, Germany. On the other hand, comparing it to King Charles III’s own Coat of Arms reveals that there is no longer any representation of the Kingdom of Hanover, Germany, because it had long ago disappeared after 1837.
Hi, yes, you're correct. The shield design is based on the King's CoA. Over the next 40 years or so, the Shield was used but eventually had a wreath around it too. The House of Hanover, and more so the Saxe-Coburg name, was dropped due to the first world war and the Kaiser's connection to George V.
Amazing video, I really wanted the 5 coin set but woke up late on release day so ended up paying for the two coin set (the one with the 2025 shield and a 1825 - 1830 shield sovereign) I got a really nice condition 1926 and I’m going to get it graded as I feel it would come back xf+ but there aren’t many graded and so I don’t mind if it comes back low but will increase the value and the quality of the proof finish is excellent. I also really wanted the St George proof as well but it had been sold old and only had a 2025 mint limit. They do have a set of all the proof rose gold King Charles from 2022 memorial to both 2025 St George and shield. I do love the historical sovereigns and can’t wait for the old gold which is even nicer than the eagle.
Hi. Thanks, I appreciate it. I was tempted to go for the 2 coin set, but I can only manage to save up enough for the 1 coin (especially when other coins keep getting bought in the meantime 😎) Mine came through quite quickly, so fingers crossed yours arrive soon. Enjoy!! Cheers.
@@TheCoinChaser It could be that. Nearly 200 years of the same design can get a tad tedious 🤣 Hopefully they'll use the Royal Arms a little more often (than every 200 years)going forward? Who knows?!?!?
@@dleetr Hiya, Yes, the Royal Arms design was around for a while, but whilst they are nice... they are quite expensive. My father has a handful of Sovereigns, that one day will be mine, and the earliest ones are from 1871, 72 & 73. Cheers.
Thanks Ian. At the time of filming I was just under the 900 mark, but at the time of typing this reply, (about 36 hours later) I'm at 910, which is absolutely amazing. I think I need to start planning the 1000 subs video sooner than planned!! Cheers.
Hi. This design didn't come in for 2024... it's the 2025 200th anniversary of the design. Yes, I paid over the odds but to refer to me as a fool for buying one??? They were limited in mintage (note the past tense) and are already changing hands for £1000. These coins will only go up in value, not matter the value of gold, and will eventually be my retirement nest egg, which is already looking very healthy. Cheers.
Beautiful coin 🥳.
That shield design is very nice.🎉
Thanks... you can see why I went for it over the St George & Dragon version! The Pistrucci design is great, but we need more Merlen! Cheers.

Yes, Piedfort are a niche collecting area. I would like to get 1 one day, but until I win the lottery, I'll have to keep window shopping. Cheers.

beautiful coin les 😅
Hello!! Hope you're well? Thanks. I'm starting to like this design more than the St George & Dragon... not sure why though. Cheers.
@ think george and dragon has been used a bit too much

@@LesCoins-uk You could always get a shield back sovereign, they were struck from 1838 to 1874. The difference being a wreath around the coat of arms.

Hi Les, great review and if I haven't already said, Congratulations on the sub count 🏆 900+

So you paid a Premium price for coin worth as much as a 2024 example. More fool you.
