- Hastur is part of the cosmic horror mythology created by H.P. Lovecraft. He is associated with unspeakable terror and madness and is known as "The King in Yellow." His mere existence causes fear and fascination, symbolizing the unknown horror.

Robert W Chambers - King in Yellow
Worth a reading.
I've not long got a copy the wordsworth edition? Been too terrified to read it lol especially after all the warnings of dire madness being made manifest by even glancing across the pages?? Errrr how was it for you? Lol
An Inhabitant of Carcosa by Ambrose Bierce is where all this started. Then, you had the Robert W Chambers book, "The King in Yellow" which references Carcosa. Lovecraft referenced the King in Yellow, adding him to his mythos and giving him the name "Hastur."
I'm not dissing Lovecraft, as he never went further that. It's more or less an easter egg. However later Lovecraft writers kind of miss the mark when it comes to portraying the King in Yellow. Making Carcosa into an actual city in another dimension full of monsters, and making the King a literal king really misses the point of the original work.
I thought the book was illegal
@top2579 😂 the book isn't illegal, The king in yellow is a collection of short stories with connections to a fictional play called " the king in yellow" which is banned in the short stories universe.
I never thought the color yellow could look so terrifying
Me neither I had no idea hastor was so terrifying
I've heard he's running a fast food franchise these day 😉

Don't believe everything you watch on the internet.
@@-Thauma- I'll try to remember that
Along the shore the cloud waves break,
The twin suns sink behind* the lake,
The shadows lengthen
In Carcosa.
Strange is the night where black stars rise,
And strange moons circle through the skies
But stranger still is
Lost Carcosa.
Songs that the Hyades shall sing,
Where flap the tatters of the King,
Must die unheard in
Dim Carcosa.
Song of my soul, my voice is dead;
Die thou, unsung, as tears unshed
Shall dry and die in
Lost Carcosa.
Lovecraft's work is as much fantasy as it is horror or science fiction. It's really in a category of its own.
That's why any fictional creature that is incomprehensible is often called "Lovecraftian".
As a big fan of all things Crhulhoid, I definitely agree - H.P.'s horror is beyond these dimensions. Ïa ïa Cthulhu Fh'tagn!
Fun Fact: The King in Yellow actually predates and was the main inspiration for Lovecraft.
I do admit Lovecraft work always gave me the idea to use ideas of his work for my He-man reboot Like having Elements of hastur used for Skeletor also having the Albino penguins story used for the Snake men and Cthulhu for Horde prime
@@comicbookreviewer4856That actually sounds brilliant especially when one considers that He-Man is essentially just an adaptation of Conan, and that Conan's creator, Robert E Howard, was a friend and confidant of Lovecraft's...and that as a result Howard took a shot at doing his own Lovecraftian tales.
8:51 small correction here: Hastur isn't an outer god. He's a great old one. If he was an outer god, it would be laughable to even compare him to Cthulu.
However, the purpose of Carcosa is to absorb worlds, nations, lesser/regional gods and souls in order to apotheosize into an outer god.
True Detective season 1 brought me here, great info!
Thwy really should have kept with that kind of theme.
I can’t wait to see more Cthulhu myths I like the eerie theme that it gives off
And I know I said this before but I can’t stop talking about the main man Marcus Aquino with these amazing illustrations
Thanks for your comment @Bewildered-monkey! We are always very happy to read such positive feedback
@@SeeUinHistory always great to come back to these videos too, tell Marcus the bewildered monkey like his work ❤️
Awesome narration and art. Great work:)
This Hastur - The Sinister King in Yellow video is amazing! I admire the detail and understanding of this fascinating Cthulhu Mythos character. Keep going strong!
It's a shame that later authors who added to the Lovecraft mythos made the mistake of thinking Hastur was the name of the King In Yellow because when you look at the source matetial you can clearly see that Hastur was actually just the name of a district within Carcosa.
In the collection of short stories done by Chambers it clearly mentions it alongside Aldebaran which is also a place and describes lakes that connect Hastur. We know to that Carcosa is notable for it's association with Lake Hali so having more waterways within the lost city is not unexpected.
Furthermore, Hastur is mentioned by Lovecraft only once but following a list of eldrich beings and at the start of a list of places like the great city of Yian, the plateau of Leng, the Lake of Hali, and the lost city of Beth oora.
Never heard this before. Very interesting, taking the idea of Hastur being his name away from.the King in Yellow re applies the sinister mystery of the beings identity.
@@VoidedFilms I strumbled across TKIY by complete accident when I heard of the collection of stories written by Chambers that was where my familiarity started. When I saw that Lovecraft added TKIY to his mythos that surprized me but not as much as the name Hastur being thrown around as TKIY's name since I knew right away that was not part of the source material.
Since then we've seen this misinformation spread further and further and no doubt I'd have believed it too had I not started with the source and worked outwards to the derivitive works. But yeah, go look at the Chamber's short stories within The King In Yellow collection. You'll see what I mean.
@@KryyssTV "The One Who Shall Not Be Named" Hastor is one of many titles people try to give the King. It is part of the great design. He wishes to be known as this title to the people of this time. His machinations are his own on why that is to be. The King in Yellow, the one you see in the yellow robes are not he, but avatars of the The One Who Shall Not Be Named. He is the very essence of greatness. And misdirection come second nature to the King. In a time if digital information this is a core principle to spread fear, decent, divisiveness. It is the sign of the times, just like the Yellow Sign.
@@kinginyellow1490Tzeech invades, corrupts the minds, but who are we to say wether t'is corruption we see, rather than the truth.
That may not actually be the case, Chambers writes " he mentioned thr establishment of the dynasty in carcosa, the lakes which connected Hastur, Alderbaran and the Mystery of the Hyades" so it does sound like he is talking about a location but he could be talking of the relation of Hastur as a being and the in depth relationship the being has to locations (Aldebaran, how do we know that is a location?) and the mystery of the Hyades. This seems to make sense in that he is talking about the Dynasty of carcosa.
If you read down that same page one paragraph chambers writes " The time had come, the people should know the son of Hastur, the whole world bow to
the black stars which hang in the sky over Carcosa" so I think he is tlaking about Hastur as a being here, not as place or nation , as in being a son of a nation or country for example.
So it is kind of vague and could be open to two interpretations.
More Lovecraft plz

You... Are the best storyteller! Your accent, narrative and rhythm. 😎 👍
Fun fact: Lovecraft once implied that Hastur and Nyarlathotep are the same being.
Nyarlathotep seems like an extension of Hastur.
The Seth in The Story Conan is The Nyarlathotep ?
Lovecraft implied? He never wrote anything about hastur.
@@hg1651He did mention Hastur once, even if other authors are the ones that really wrote about him and fleshed him out.
@@TheReaLcatniPIt’s probably the reverse. Hastur is likely another Avatar of Nyarlathotep.
Cthulhu and Hastur have never worked together.
You'd think cultists would stop summoning Old Ones after eons of a 100% worse than death rate.
Elden Ring had a large and fitting nod to the king in yellow. Warhammer 40K uses the name and i'm sure GW knows its origin but it's hard to imagine Constantin Valdor having any common traits or goals with Hastur to suggest anything more than the name being shared.

I’m actually going to direct a short film after the summer based on the king in yellow. The story is entirely original written by me but keeps the key characteristics of the stories in the King in Yellow. Such as the book and King makes an appearance during a moment in the story. A descent into madness. I won’t elaborate on the specifics or the title because I don’t want anyone to steal it.
Interesting. I'm a pretty big fan of the King in Yellow Lore. How will people be able to view the short film when it is done?
@@HalideHelix I haven’t started filming yet but I’ve had the script completed for awhile now but will start filming after the summer. I got my cast planned out especially who’s going to play the King. I needed someone tall and lucky enough I know someone from the acting program who I contacted and emailed him the script and he really liked it and helped out with the rest of the casting. He’s 6 ft 4.
It will be viewed on my channel here on TH-cam. I already have a film if you want to check it out. It’s SCP based but it’s a little bit of my style and what you could expect from the next film. But except it to be a bit longer and more locations.
@@HalideHelix I might make a trailer after but I’ll see if I have time.

Now I thought he resided in the stone monastery on the plateau of leng? Idk
The movie Tumbbad is about the demon Hastur & he too wears a crown. Wondering if they're one and the same.
No not even remotely close lol
The backrooms is his playinground. And i read somewhere that "The thing" was his herald.

Why doesn’t he talk about backroom myths, I wonder?
@@BEExPyro it isn't.
@@henriquecesardesouzasilva8766 what? If this guy posted a backrooms video, would you watch it?
I think that would be more entertaining than lovecraft.
Yeah. Wandering around an empty warehouse-like structure for God knows how long or for what reason is so much more interesting than cosmic horror/mountain sized monsters/Dark Gods -Outer Gods-Space Gods- God's of Dreams and Nightmares/A civilization of fish people temporarily living in Cape cod or maybe Nantucket/entities so powerful and hideous that one look at them can cause even the strongest of minds to break..... Riiiight 👌. * H.P and REH were great friends and collaborators. So it's possible that if Hastur or Cthulhu or Dagon get to big for their britches, Conan the Barbarian could show up and take them down a peg or 2,3, 400! Are there any riveting stories about Conan showing up in the backrooms?? I thought not
