In a nutshell, people of the lie have no desire to do good, however they will deceptively try to appear good for their own self serving gain, remorseless in their destructive behavior. We sinners on the other hand desire and strive to do good but fall short, repent, and continue trying, depending thankfully on God’s mercy and grace. Thank you for pointing out and clarifying the difference between the people of the lie, which hopefully most people aren’t, and sinners, which all of us are. God bless you and your channel!

i love this comment because ive maintained that there are sinners and there are snakes. God told Eve that there will be enmity between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent. Jesus also identified the Pharisees as the seed of the serpent who were doing their father’s will.

Reading M. Scott Peck's "People of the Lie" was the first time I got a clue as to what was wrong with my mom. Today, Narcissistic Personality Disorder is part of even pop culture. In the 80s it was not yet so well-articulated for a popular audience. I knew _something_ was wrong with her, but hard to tell exactly what it was.

I read this book when it first came out. No one was taking about human evil. Like other commenters, it helped in some way to explain my mom, who was deeply evil, envious and in her mind, perfect.

@@StillAwakeAwareDiscerning Peck was definitely trying to recapture a sense of the word "evil" that would be useful in a clinical context, rather than a religious or supernatural understanding of the word. It comes down to observable behaviors and patterns of those behaviors.

Carol, you've just described me! I'm trying to recover from the aftermath right now. I read M. Scott Peck's book in college back in 97 and immediately thought of my in-laws (now X) but could not put my finger on it. We'll, their son, my X, after 33 years of cognitive dissonance, was their masterpiece (piece of💩!).

I remember Dr. Peck warned that studying evil meant we would have an encounter with evil. I did. Although, it would take many decades before I had any discernment for the evil right in front of me😅😅 and paid a very high price for it.

It has taken many years to get the place where I would leave a comment like this: The best explanation of narcissism I have heard was an answer to my question to Catholic Exorcist Fra Ripperger. I asked: Are Narcissists possessed? The reply I received was: sometimes, but not always. Most live in a perfect possession. Where the human and the demon live in perfect harmony. An example of this would be a gossiper, who knows that gossiping hurts people, but does it anyway. Research the Nephilim. Disembodied spirits that are constantly on the prowl for a weakened human that they can possess in “perfect harmony”.

@nsbd90now The work does focus on the psychological, while simultaneously making use of, and acknowledging the supernatural aspects of the problem of evil in reality. We see both things operating. Where RLT is written in a more purely secular psychological context, POL bridges the gap. Peck even speaks to this in the early portion of the book.
"Finally, of course, a psychology of evil must be a religious psychology. By this I do not mean it must embrace a specific theology. I do mean, however, that it must not only embrace valid insights from all religious traditions but must also **recognize the reality of the ‘supernatural’**. And, as I have said, it must be a science in submission to love and the sacredness of life. It cannot be a purely secular psychology."
He goes on to state that he is writing with input from a supernatural context, his own religious belief.
"My desire is not to be scholarly or thorough but to strike as well as I can at the heart of the matter, so as to encourage us toward scientific scholarship and thoroughness. While other religious traditions have much to offer a psychology of evil, in moving toward that psychology I shall be speaking with my specifically Christian voice."
There's also the whole chapter on possession and utilization of Malachi Martin's book "Hostage to The Devil" to consider.
While I agree with you that he was working to establish a framework to aid in expanding our understanding of NPD, I think its inaccurate to claim that he was not speaking about something supernatural. It can be, and very much is both.

@@mindsonguard I read it when it came out. He is definitely Christian, and takes that approach, and as said, trying to re-capture the word "evil" for use in a clinical sense. But that Christian aspect I recall being more as existential rather than anything supernatural. I read that Martin book too back then. It was entertaining. There isn't anything supernatural. There are no gods, no demons. Just people and their behavior. What he describes is Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

I see what you mentioned as well! It’s a very complex situation that winds up being horrible on all fronts. The reason I mention the lack of responsibility is that, more likely, is what is driving the aspects you mention. How might the treatment have changed if they had been in the habit of examining their choices and the consequences and taking ownership of those things? It may have been the same, but it would be wise for us to adopt that self examination in our own lives and do all we can to treat people with love.

I read this book very long time ago when I was still a teenager. Back then, I wasn't able to fully understand who they were or if they truly existed. Then as time goes by, it crossed my mind several times when I met people or situations if those people were one of those in the book. It was very good examples of how evils / narcisisstic people behave. They basically take everything as if their reward and they will never consider you as equal. For them, they are the best of all and everyone else is below. They call other people as evil no matter what they are, even making up all things they perceive as evil to justify what they have said or done.

@mindsonguard I think a better way to say it is this: When they dance in agreement with demons, significant parts of their humanity are lost to them. They no longer have access to caring or empathy. A good example of this is an active alcoholic or drug addict. They are the poster children of narcissism. But when they seek treatment and actively get into recovery, the demon no longer has power over them, they become under Gods protection, (AA is a spiritual program), and they are able to get in touch with and recover aspects of their humanity that they had lost. Not quick or easy, but possible. We only have two choices in this realm, seek Gods protection or be oppressed by the dark side.
