Damascus steel technology using copper piano strings.

- The video uses both the San Mai blade structure and the Mokume Gane technique and Damascus steel technology, and I don’t know what to correctly call this mixture of technologies. The porous copper in the photographs of the blade is powder steel impregnated with copper, the physics of the process is not completely clear to me, pure powder steel was poured into the container. The strings consist of a steel core wrapped with steel wire, on top of which copper wire is wound.

On my patreon page, I began to explain the processes and secrets of my work. Topics already covered:
1. Why do I add pepper to container Damascus steel.
2. What do I sprinkle? Flux and its composition.
3. How do I remove the container from the workpiece (container Damascus steel).
4. Why am I drilling a hole in a container.
5. Why do I sweep away the dross from the anvil with my hand.
6. Why do I first forge some blanks on a tree.
7. In what and why do I soak the blank before forging.
8. In which granules do I place the workpiece after forging.
9. What kind of white powder do I pour into the container.
10. In what liquid do I develop the pattern on the blade.

The fact you were able to take these metals that usually don't want to stick together and form a working piece of art like this is amazing. Truly a master of your craft, good sir
yeah eventually itll split and rust apart but at least at the moment it looks really badass
Well he added a chilies and peppers that’s why it stick 😅
Its is eventually the same as brazing to steel.
Could not have worked without the chilli.
Must be the pepper
I'm going to have to watch this several times. This is by far the most intricate copper pattern I've seen in a steel blade, and I love that the strings give a further subtle pattern where there's no copper. Outstanding!
I've been watching this guy for years. Occasionally, his stuff still pops up in my feed. Every single time I come to the same conclusion, this guy is the best, cleanest knife maker I've ever seen. He certainly makes it look effortless it certainly is not.

20 years ago my shop teacher told me it's impossible to make copper/steel damascus, when I suggested it.
I guess you proved him wrong today!
You should look him up and show him the video.
@@LuciferAlmighty That depends. Are we talking about modern damascus or true damascus.
@@LuciferAlmighty How can you say that? What about Wootz steel?
@@benkayvfalsifier3817 I can say that because there's only 1 type of Damascus steel period.
@@LuciferAlmighty And that is?
Forging videos as they should be, no talk, just forging awesome blades and some low key implied jokes.
With some tea to keep the mind spicy
And most importantly, no loud music!
Baharatın gücü😄
@@Pow3llMorgan nothing ruins a forging video more than loud copyright free music no one likes.
I don't know, I tend to like it when the smith is going through their practice on what choices they're making in the design/process and why
Seeing the billet created always puts me in a happy place, as much as seeing the finished blade. The Tea Master's work is appreciated!
I come to watch the tea but stay to see the blade😄 and he's done it again
And it puts a happy face on the canister :D
It's the pepper!
@@PerspectiveEngineer I'm new here, can you explain the pepper and the chilli? was it a joke, or genuinely does it affect the final result of the damascus?
He is Ukrainian, and the word for spicy is the same as the word for sharp in Ukrainian @@dedede9664
I believe I’m not exaggerating when I say that a large community appreciates and enjoys the educational, high quality but still frugal and to the point approach. The creativity in each individual knife (and the tea break 😏), the reveal after the acid dip and rinsing always brings “a little Christmas surprise” in the heart of every blacksmith, blade smith or metal worker enthusiast.
Thank you.
"Educational"
The man has no clue what damascus steel is...
We already almost forgot how to make damascus steel once and now he is making people think pattern welded steel is "damascus steel"
Also, those of us that just love knives and, while we'd love to get into forging, haven't gotten started yet. 🙂
one of my favorite pieces you've ever done! the way the dark line around the copper makes it look raised off the surface is so beautiful. i am always glad to see you continue to practice your art through the war. that is resistance
One of if not the best copper Damascus pattern I’ve ever seen!!! WOW ! I’ve always loved you craftsmanship but this is on a new level sir !
Every time I watch your work, I'll see something that other blacksmiths will copy from you in the future.
Stay safe!
future blacksmiths will scratch their heads wondering what part is the salt and pepper playing in making Damascus
😅😂😂
@@Baubazthere is a good reason to put pepper in there actually, tho very few people know about it
@@butcherofblaviken1619 углерод?
@@user-fs9ju4vb8x no, that little amount of carbon on the surface will make no difference, plus he cut it off, it's not about carbonization but providing a good weld
I was already happy to see another shurap video pop up in my feed, but that happy face weld @1:11 truly made my day (not to mention the beautiful end product).
I came here to make the same comment!
I'm reminded of a Protogen; if you know what that is.
They put a happy face on a lot of them and I always love it
So happy to see a new video from you! Beautiful work as always 😊
Yes Nice Video ❤🧡💛
The copper inside the steel is beautiful, but what I really like is that you see tiny steel parts within the copper. Such a beautiful effect!
@@suprememasteroftheuniverse so? Takes years. All that time having something beautiful to watch at.
I'll never forget the comment I saw a while ago about this being a cleverly disguised channel about tea.
Another beautiful blade. It looks amazing.
We're glad to see you're still posting, and hope your family is safe.
It's actually Uncle Iroh from Avatar the last Airbender
Makes me want tea everytime
Possibly your most beautiful blade yet, top five. Thank you 🙂
But can it "kee-ill"
This video is the first that I had to pause and zoom in enhance to appreciate. What a blade... Like a handful of minutes. Thanks 💪🔨
Absolutely stunning! This is one of your best pieces yet. Much love and support from the UK!
Always a treat when I see a new video from you, not only to see your beautiful works of art... but also to know that you are still O.K.
I LOVE the little bits you do... "A little ground pepper to season", "A little chilli to give it some kick" and a smile to say "All's good!" 😏😉👍🤣🤣🤣
😎🇬🇧
in russian (& maybe also ukranian) the words for 'sharp' & 'spicy' are the same, leading some of us to believe the chilis are a kind of pun, but i suspect they also serve to soak up oxygen in the canister,
I noticed that too. I'm curious as to why though? Does it do something to the steel?
@@punkghostsamurai I've found that if you add some carbon based textile (like paper) to the inside of the material, when you forge, it should add carbon and prevent some oxygen from entering the case. Honestly, once it's been heated, the effect is lost, so it's rather pointless, aside from some shit's and giggles.
@@chrismcdaniel3666 hmm and I'm sitting here like an idiot thinking it can harden it. But hey it was funny. Still made me curious.
@@punkghostsamurai LOL...I thought I was learning something new!
I still don't know why you season your metal but I love it. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
He does it to give more flavours and scents to the soul of the piece he creates.
spicy and sharp are the same in russian, so he seasons it to make it sharp
They're in Ukraine*@@LoneStarDisciples
Edit: yes it's the same language, but it's like the difference between Spain Spanish and Mexican Spanish
Its to add extra carbon.
@@guysheets626 ЦЕ не так,ви помиляєтесь.
Was cool to see you keeping the temperature a little lower.
Always fun seeing your work.

I will never get tired of him “seasoning” the metals he uses😂
This is definitely one of your coolest designs. It looks like you somehow managed to forge a copper vein into the blade. Its Gorgeous.
Glad you're staying safe, Dmytro!
Glad to see you are still up and running. Hope you will be blessed with peace and security and praying for an end to this war. Stay safe.
Yes ❤🧡💛
This is amazing. Thanks again for another quality build!
That's a beautiful piece. Thank you for posting.
Honestly one of the most beautiful blades I have ever seen
Agreed!
I'm from Damascus 🇸🇾❤️🇸🇾❤️
Never ceases to amaze me how beautiful your work is. This is one of my favorites. Absolutely beautiful, but when I saw that crack, my heart sank.
Absolutely stunning.
First I saw copper and I thought sadly this knife will be useless but I kept watching. Thankfully I have learned never to “judge” a product before it’s finished. And I’m glad to be wrong about that copper, the instant I saw that the steel went through the springs I knew that this is a great knife. Hats off.
That honestly is a work of art. Thank you for the video.
Incredible !!! Awesome Damasco !!! You're definitly the best ! Congratulations

Simply amazing! Absolute beauty of a blade!
As always a pleasure to see your work. Stay safe.
This is the first blade that hit me this hard, I'm a lifelong piano player, learned with my dad and took lessons for 15+ years, and still play daily. I also love to cook. This is such a cross of those passions that I would love to at least know what it costs and how it cuts/looks with a handle. It is a stunning work of art and I am extremely impressed with the look of this knife.
Amazing work, my guy. As always, absolutely amazing work!
Doesn't matter how many times I see it, but the :-) during these videos always makes me smile. Spectacular work as always!
Absolutely beautiful, this is my favorite blade made by you so far

Shiny Anvil said it well. The surprise after the dip, I do r recall that a number of times myself. Great workmanship. Thank You !😊
Yes great work respect to you and him ❤🧡💛
These videos enthrall me. I am a digital illustrator and this is so far away from what I do for a living it may as well be on the other side of the universe. And the results are breathtaking.
And I love your little teapot.
well thats the last time I cash in piano strings for scrap...thats stunning ..and well done getting all the bits to weld together , that alone is no walk in the park.
