My Land Rover Discovery 5 has now been sold! … Although this Defender is not the ideal replacement it’s going to be an amazing new project to build from scratch.
Another car inbound on the channel next week as the “family car” replacement 👌🏻

That’s a fantastic base to start with! Personally, it looks brilliant relatively stock but I get the point of the build. A good service and general tidy up of the body work and an interior refresh without all the bling would be my choice. There’s too many over done and accessorised Defenders out there now that it’s become a case of bolting uninteresting cosmetic bits on them for the sake of bolting bits on them. It’s refreshing to see a Defender looking more like a Defender that left the factory with some subtle and well thought out practical changes. ‘Less is more’ would be my theme of this build if it was mine.

There's potential in this Defender for simple camping trips, as well as daily driver and cargo van. I would cover the hard top with some insulation and then put a Exmoore canvas hood on. The cargo bed can be covered in wood. Beside an in depth cleaning and some new seats, I would keep this beauty as stock as possible. Good luck.

A challenge. Why not return a 20+ year farm use vehicle back to factory fresh spec. Exactly like the day it was purchased. With sympathetic future longevity and reliability upgrades only if needed. Give the previous owner first dibs on resale👍🙂

I've bought a pick up 90 recently. I think the pickups have way more character and are cooler. First plan is to get a full roll cage by whitbread 4x4, second is to get a removable steering wheel as an anti theft barrier, thirdly treat the chassis and then the fun stuff begins and buying bits & pieces from bowler.
I watched your build on your previous 90 and am certainly looking forward to seeing where you go with this one.
    Have fun!

Congrats on the new purchase, seems like a good choice. I would pressure wash and treat with one of the corrosion resisting treatments (my 2010 110 was done with Dinitrol a few years ago and has stayed in place). Once that is done I would tidy up the body panels and the interior, then only add mods that are functional rather than blingful. A remap and an improved intercooler and exhaust would be my choice. Whatever you choose, the main thing is to have fun doing it all.

Love the purchase and I can understand where you would like to take it. Heritage soft top builds are great and I can see the appeal in doing such a conversion. Great fun, increase in value of the build etc etc. If that is the route you take, the rear window/bulkhead is as rare as rocking horse shit so good resale value on that. Good luck and I’ll be following.

Nice 110! Please be careful when you jetwash the front around the bonnet catch area. I blew the grease out of the jockey uley bearings on my td5 which seized in a remote area. The power steering and aircon belts snapped and subsequently sliced through the coolant pipes. The recovery to a safe area from where I could trailer it home 350kmaway plus repairs and car rental home cost me over R8000 in 2007 which was a massive dent in the pocket. The replacement bearing cost R35. Expensive lesson learnt. Enjoy that beautiful machine!

I'd take the body off and completely clean everything down. Taking the bodies off is really straightforward you can take the rear tub off and the front wings and just leave the bulkhead in place - it gives great access to the chassis and everything else - you at least know what you are dealing with from then on.

I can definitely see a cool n vintage style defender coming out here. I mean let's face it, that's what I would do with a lwb pickup. Might be tempted for a bright colour, orange or bright blue, retro front grille, galv top edge rails and tan bikini hood for the rear. Tan leather seat set. Maybe split front doors? Mud tires on matching coloured steel rims.
Had dinitrol done on my 90 TD5, seems good so far.

@@-DC- new defenders yes. But I wouldn’t put the new and old in the same category anyway.. one is a real agricultural and utility vehicle and the other is for accountants who want to visit their second home in Cornwall on the weekend with the surf board strapped to the roof!
We run 3 defenders for mooring operations and pull wires and ropes, our oldest is a 1999 and has given us great service over the last 18 years we’ve owned it!
The Ford Ranger we have which is a 2018 has already given us problem and just doesn’t compare to the pulling power the old defender has.. having the axles lock up when you put it in low really doesn’t help as it eats tyres.. the good old defender is permanent 4 wheel drive with a centre diff lock which helps us massively as the weights we pull are very high but the traction is normally fine!
