The sound of those pages turning is to die for.
Love the sound of this sketchbook! I bet the feeling of drawing on the page with the crinkly sounds is so nice. I feel so inspired by how freely you began this and looking at it as an everything book is so lovely and must get rid of that layer of hesitation before making!
Thank you!!! The layer hesitation can pop up, but sometimes I might skip a page until I don’t care about it anymore 😂
Surely that’s an onion chopped in half on the cover!? Xx can’t wait to see what adventures you will have in this new book! So excited. Absolutely loved your latest sketchbook tours, 😍😍😍🫶🙏👌👌👌
Haha that would make sense 😂
Thank you x
Was going to say the same😂
@@fionasimaginationMe, too! That cross-section is beautiful. I’ll never slice an onion without appreciating its beauty.
The name of the journal is called the oak. It also mentions tree rings in the description. So while the onion cross-section makes sense, I think it actually is an oak.
@@mdipeace ah, ok. That makes sense! Thank you! 😊
I love my Onion Skin Journal. I have made it the journal of the year. I was also amazed at its versatility with watercolor, ink and stamps. Just great! The CommonPlace book was used by Thomas Jefferson. That's where I first heard about it. I put all my images and inspiring quotes in it. I only put words and images on on one side. Love it.
I really enjoy what you are doing in the journal. I call that style Art Journaling. Using colors, textures, and symbols as well as words allows me to express emotions better than just straight words or only colors/shapes do. You look like you have had lots of practice at this.
Thank you for the inspiration!
I love the crinnkle. Thank you for sharing your journal. Fantastic work, very joyful.
Ahh sketchbooks like this would make me go insane with all the transparency, but when you use it it looks phenomenal! And of course, the obligatory "ooooh the crinkly noises!!" XD It sounds so good! You've also inspired me to go get my dip pens out.
The sketchbook is coming together really nicely! You're right when you say that the overlays of all the drawings give some really interesting effects. Sometimes the pages have a totally different feel or energy depending on the page it's going over, like that one of the girl in the thistles. When you turned her over the page of the lavender splotches, it looked like dappled shadows. So beautiful.
It looks like it'd be a very useful book for someone who enjoys overlaying pages to refine drawings, like layers in photoshop. Or for an animator.
I really enjoyed watching this video as I have been thinking about purchasing an onion skin journal for a long time. Now I want one even more.
Your sketches starting at 10:55 would make beautiful journal covers! All your art is beautiful, but those drawings had such movement in them. 🤩
your self portraits absolutely blow me away. They are amazing!
Hearing the sound of you turning the pages is so satisfying. I want to buy one just from that sound!! 😍😍😍
Thank you thank you for introducing this to me I’m so happy I am gonna buy one too, love the feel and sound of the pages 💜
It's reminding me of Tomoe river paper, a Japanese paper I love. I may have to try one!
Oooh I can imagine!
Came for the onion skin, stayed for your energy. Lovely video.
🌼 thank youuu
Loved this! The pages make such a pleasing sound! I’ve always been a heavy paper sketchbook kind of person but now I’m very inspired to buy a sketchbook with thin pages. Thanks so much Sophie!💖
Hey Sophie. As a fellow Aussie in Qld, I have been after onion skin paper for years! That crackle and translucency is to die for! Can't find anywhere to get it here 😢. I really really love your channel. Thankyou so much for sharing!
If you end up finding it in Australia, please let me know!!! xoxox
yeah im fine as well if the paper gets all crinkled, can add some really interesting texture to the page 😀
Totally! Love when it gets all weird and interesting!
Oh, welcome to the dark side, dear 😂. I use mine as an everything/daily’ish journal. I hide my stock of new ones…if my husband knew 🫢❤️. And it’s the crinkle 😂
That book looks *delicious*
Surely it is not edible. But ... daaang. Hearing those pages turn is ahhhhh 🤩
I knooowww!!! So crunchy fresh!
I love the sound of those pages. That's definitely one for the wish list 😊
First I wasn't sure about the paper of the sketchbook, but now I kinda want one 😅
It’s a whole different experience to normal sketchbooks! So fun!
Damn, you're filling this boy so fast! I love to see your sketchbook drawings. So joyful!
Delicious paper and I love the Lousy Inks. Shame they’re in Australia.
The Lousy inks are so lovely! I'm lucky to live close by to them! :)
Amazing work!!! Love your portraits and figures. The Onion Skin people were so smart to send their journal to you. Anything you make is so beautiful, creative and super fun!!!
❤️❤️❤️
Wow ! You are going to finish this so fast 🤭 I’m excited for you 🤗. It looks very fun
wowowow, those crinkly pages sound so YUMMY for my ears! giving my itchy brain a good scratch! yum! i love how elements of the next pages doodles peek through and play with the drawings on the page before, kinda like you're looking through a window. so awesome. could have a lot of fun with that overlapping element! putting it on the wishlist!
Yes! It was on my wishlist for monthhsssss! So lovely to play with and the layering and stuff! LOVE IT
This is wonderful, love your videos ☺☺☺
Hi; I'm Italian and, just to avoid a typical mistake of translation, the meaning of the renaissance term "florilegium" has actually nothing to do with flowers, at least not directly, even less with a flower collection (herbarium).
It was used, and still is, to indicate a collections of important writings, documents and letterature masterpices.
The word comes from "floris" (flower) and "legĕre" (to read) and the word flower here is only used because in medieval vulgar language, the term "fior da fiore" used by Dante Alighieri in his Divina Commedia, meant and still means "to pick the best of the best" like the acting of picking the most beautiful flowers for a bouquet.
The incorrect use of the term probably comes from the beautifull flower installation of contemporary British artist Rebecca Louise Law which actually uses the term "Florilegium" as a wordplay, a pun.
Sorry for the pedantry remark but it hurts me so much anytime I see my mother language innocently misused :-)
Hello! Ooh yes I did read about that during my research! I went deep into it, haha! The initial definition is beautiful and interesting. I think it still relates to the story of the artwork. Language does evolve but I really value you for clearing this up! There’s so much I should have included in my voice over- and I did intend to mention the history in a better way, but I don’t write my scripts, I just start chatting and I leave stuff out because I go on tangents and forget to circle back!! Eek!
Any way, thanks for your comment, I love it! Language is fascinating!
This sketchbook/journal looks like too much fun, it's the thin crinkly crackly paper for me. It's like the phyllo dough of papers! I always thought I was such a weirdo as a kid (well, I am a total weirdo but that's besides the point) because I loved getting my hands on a bible or a big dictionary just to turn those super fine pages and hear a crinkle! What the hell? Why is it so enticing? hahaha
SAME DEBBIE! Same! We were the same child haha!!!!
Please make an artbook !! ❤
One day 😍
Ugh, I've been tempted to get one for a while and seeing your colourful way of willing the book just made it even more attractive (I've seen mostly linework style drawing & writing in these). The sound of the filled pages is just magical. 😍
Before it arrived I was looking up to see how other people used them, but never found someone who used it like I do! It has been fun to experiment in :)
Hey Sophie, a friend of mine showed me your youtube channel and I'm insta in love with your style and personality! Immediately subscribed! Just wanted to say that and big warm greetings from the Netherlands!
Thank you so much!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Okay, I’m kind of obsessed, but at the same time, that price tag! I may have to make my own - that’s not nearly as sturdy. lol. It’s ok though, I’m so inspired and that counts!!
Sophie do you just like any ole glass dip pen? Thinking about getting some from temu or even Amazon is cheap enough. The spirally kind. What inks do you love? I’m sure you’ve got a video about it- I like how the lousy ones are thicker
Yeah!! I like any old kind! I have the cheap ones and the fine quality ones. The fine quality ones feel nicer to use (because they were obviously made better) but the cheap ones come close!
Calligraphy inks are my favourite! I love any ink really! Hahah!
🥰“brain flowers”🌸
Wonderful, Sophie! I like that crinkling sound. I also liked considering the view thru the paper. Is it fun for you to consider how the various pages merge and separate, showing one image through another? There must be a proper art term for this diaphanous technique. Lovely. Thanks! 💜💜💜
Yes! I love drawing a page and then seeing how it looks through the drawings of the page previous! It’s so lovely!!!
@@SophieMcPike 💜💜💜
How similar is it to tracing paper? Sounds and looks similar in the video
It’s pretty similar but also different?! It’s made of wood pulp and it’s stronger than tracing paper :)
First! hehe!
So excited to see this video! So interesting to see the different sketch book paper. Love how you played and explored with it so far.
