Minecraft Tutorial: Hopper Minecart Item Drop-off Station

I show you a simple way to unload all items from a hopper minecart automatically at a "drop-off station" and then continues on for the next load. This also works with storage minecarts and is very useful for collecting drops from automated farms and then automatically storing them where you like. This design is also tile-able and and can be built to any size you need.

Impulse, I love that this thing still works after 9 years. I've used it countless times but still sometimes have to revisit because I often forget which direction the repeater and comparator go into. I don't think this thing will ever not work at this point and if it stops working, dang it Mojang.

if your Minecart isn’t stopping when it goes on top of the hopper, make sure that the hopper leads into a chest and not another hopper!
i did some testing when mine wasn’t working, and apparently if the hopper leads into another hopper, this design breaks, however if the hopper leads into a CHEST instead, then it works. and from there you can actually put hoppers underneath the chest and lead it into a bigger storage system

I've been looking at tutorials for what is basically this same design, but I've been baffled as to why mine was not working correctly. Of the 2 or 3 others I watched, not a damn one of them mentioned that the hopper needed to feed into a chest to slow the feed down, so I'd just like to thank you for actually mentioning that critical detail. I was looking for one that I built ages ago and was far more complex cause I can't remember that off the top of my head. My Gods, thank you Imp, glad I watch you and yours came up first thing. I am guilty of understanding it in the first handful of seconds and just letting the video play out in the background.
Does this still work in 1.9? After I copy everything it doesn't stop on the hopper nor does it empty

I know this is an old vid but just saved one of my builds lol. I had no idea you needed to have a chest right under the hopper where the hopperminecart stops. I just daisy chained my hoppers into my dropper to feed to my storage system. Thanks for the great save impluse!

Still works as of April 27, 2023. Thank you so much! The only thing I can add is this can't be up against another wall. I tried wedge it into the "crawlspace" between two room walls to hide it. No bueno. Not complaining. I wanted to help other people like me (I suck at redstone mechanics) who are trying to debug.

Have 8 of them tiled together.
Works perfectly fine in 1.15.2.
One funny thing I noticed is that if 1 is being unloading, the ones directly next to it is also locked. But that's possibly because I have it as a hopper chain instead of it going into a chest at first. It's more than fine though. It looks fun and got no issues whatsoever otherwise.
carts that are riding side by side like that will grab each other, slow down each other if youre trying to ride a cart down and rub up against it basically etc.
they're 1.05x blocks tall and wide lol or something. cuz they "grab" which ya

This helps so much!!! Thank you. I was trying to do a reactive rail that sends a pulse to a sticky piston with a Redstone block to active it and a rail swapper from reactor to normal so it doesn’t hit it twice
couldn't remember that it has to flow in to a chest was trying to figure it out for hours thank you for still having this up

my minecart doesnt stop im playing java on pc, and i made sure its not about speed, and i slowed the minecart down, but it still doesnt stop?
Also I made sure that the redstone is right, and the wooden rail is there plz help?

@@christiancevallos9820 oh I fixed it. The thing is the hopper was too fast for the comparator to read the signal, so I slowed it down by putting a chest underneath the hopper that the minecart is standing on

Solution found! I am on Xbox 1 in 1.16. The cart would not stop and unload consistently. My solution: remove the repeater and place Redstone dust in its place. I also placed one piece of redstone dust on the block which is above the red stone torch. I placed a third piece of redstone dust on the block which is above the comparator. Recap remove repeater and add 3 pieces of redstone dust.

just tried this, but it doesnt work when the minecart didnt pick up anything. the cart will just stop and the powered rail will never turn back on because theres nothing in the cart to trigger it to begin with. :/ this is ridiculous

Is it possible to make the minecart chest activate the powered rail once it's full. This contraption is amazing, I was just wondering because I want to be able to queue items in the chest without freezing the system.

Is there a reason why this works but if I try to do the mirrored version, so with the hopper, redstone comparators etc on the right, it doesn't work?

Btw, for 1.10 + you have to have a solid block underneath the right side of the 4 powered rails and light one up with a redstone torch beneath.
The comparitor can be placed on an upside down slab to achieve the same results and allows you to place a double chest underneath without hindrance.
a 2nd double chest used beneath the first hopper under the rail can be used as a bottle neck system that allows you to store another stack of 54 items beneath the upside down slab rail.
You can still tessellate the pattern, just be wary that the rail mechanics for 1.10 will cause unorthodox behaviors if you start with the regular rail first.
This can also work for melon/pumpkin farming, auto collecting saplings/apples without worry of missing one, and any other farm that utilizes a drop system.
Max radius for 1 item collected via hopper cart is 1.25 blocks above. Slimes cannot spawn on a .125, .25, or .375 block surface.

is there any way to have chests with a hopper to have specific drop off points? so i could empty all my materials into these specific chest, have the minecart come pick the items up, and move them to the end chest?

all of you guys who says its not working, try making your comparator system an easier goal, like a torch that has been stretched out more, and then place the chest under another hopper, with the comparator aligned, so its just that bit harder but it still works

i know this is an old tutorial but is there a way to tweak the system so that the powered railed on top of the hopper is powered on when the cart has something in it and powered off when its empty?

Theres seems to be a lot of people having trouble with the cart actually stopping on console or PE, the way I fixed this was by placing a detector rail further down the track with redstone feeding into a torch that turns off the pre existing torch in the design a few ticks early, this way the cart has a few more frames to actually stop. It unloads just fine for me now so I'm hoping this helps someone else having the same problem. If you're laying the design side by side make sure you're detector rail is atleast 16 blocks back I believe so the redstone line doesn't bother other layers and you'll need repeaters at the end to make sure its timed correctly. I believe I used 13 ticks between my added torches/repeaters but it'll depend on how fast your cart is going so just tinker with it. Hope this helps!

I had an issue with the minecart continuing instead of stopping to unload in 11.2. I realized the rails were being powered by an energized block further down the line. If you're having issues, check your power sources. Hope this helps.

I have 2 separate item sorters not that far apart and I am looking to use hopper minecarts to transfer any items that were in the wrong section and bring it to the next to be properly sorted out. Would this work to connect the output Chest to a separate input chest?

Update: im playing on bedrock 1.16 and it appears that it won't immediately stop, this is easy to fix: just place a block on both sides of the second (from the powered rail on the hopper) rail to add some friction, which makes it fully stop.
I have the same issue but the thing is i put a detector rail above the hopper so it stops but the itens arent flowing through any help?

Nice video! How do I make the opposite side work? I built the hopper cart dropping items off, how do I add on the other side a chest with a hopper, where the hopper-cart picks up items, waits for it to be loaded, then leaves to drop off the items (like the one above) when it is empty?

What is the purpose of the repeater here? (Im still learning what everything does), as apposed to just putting the tourch in its spot.

my minecart isn't stopping. does this no longer work anymore? I've tried hopper carts and chest carts. the redstone is correct, but somehow the delay is just too much. the repeater is on the first tick too.
Yea this is my problem too. I'm using minecraft pe though. I wonder wether it might just be useful creating a line of hoppers, that feed to the end instead, and they will drop each items continually.
Actually my above method worked better than expected. If you create a hoppers attached to the sides of the other, (I made a few attached to the sides to form a line), it allowed enough time to for the powered rails to stop and the minecart sat there. Although, I'm not sure how to get the minecart working again. So I'm part of the way there.

Also was building this mirrored, so it didn't work at first. Realised I was backways, flipped the repeater and all was good.
Perfect! Working in 1.12 just fine, might want to make sure the cart isn't moving too quickly as it arrives at the station tho or it may not stop.

Anyone know how to speed up the rate of creepers spawning on bedrock do I keep the carpets or remove them?
did they change this? my cart just stops after unloading stuff. never starts back up
