    this is the best ever pace bowling attack the cricketing world had ever had. fast, clever, intelligent and on the whole humane. Humble to the highest levels. Never sledging. one stare was good enough to make others that he is really hostile. On and Off the field such a gem of Humanbeings. played for the sake cricket not for winning and not surely to staisfy their ego levels. Players like LLoyd, Richards, Croft,Haynes, Greenidge, RIchie Richardsons and then the fearsome foursome pace quartet, What a great team of Cricket ambassadors they are, and Then Marhsall, Ambrose and a ever lovlely Walsh. They are all legends(living except for Marshall)

    Andy Roberts would often bowl at his average pace slightly short and make the batsman feel a little comfortable and then he would bowl let one delivery that will come at the throat of the batsman at a tremendous pace with the same action taking the batsman totally by surprise and often making the batsman to fend and get caught.

    Most certainly the Fastest bowler with Coolest temper.His debut Test series was in India under Lloyd's captaincy.He bowled at one stump in practice and knocked it smething 4 times in 6 balls ! Could make the ball rise from 'just short of good length' surprising the batsman with steep bounce See how Greg Chappel offerred a lolly
    At 6 feet 7inches Tony Greg was astonished to see Roberts bring the ball to the tip of his nose steeply ...from that 'just short of good length'
    No wonder Roberts did not have to show his Anger or indulge in any kind of sledging. That '.... just short of ..' steeply rising between batsmen's nose and chin did not need support of sledging / anger.Am sure just a stare from Roberts could have been enough to make the best batsman shiver.

    My ex told me this story of Andy Roberts.
    Back in the 1970's, Andy went to visit the High School where my ex was a student. (in Sydney Australia)
    Any interested student was invited to go to Andy's "coaching clinic" out on the oval. A number of boys went, but my ex, being cricket mad, was the only girl.
    At one point, the students formed a circle around Andy, being maybe 10 metres from him, and Andy would throw the cricket ball to students randomly whilst imparting pearls of wisdom about training, discipline or anything cricket.
    He would throw the ball over arm to the boys, but would toss gentle under arms to my ex.
    Of course, she told Andy to throw them over arm to her as well, because she could catch just as good as the boys.
    So the next time, he threw over arm to her, but unfortunately, the ball bounced off her hands into her face, smashing one of her front teeth and knocking her unconscious.
    But only for a minute.
    She came to, lying on her back, with the fearsome Andy Roberts crouching over her, terror in his eyes, asking her if she was alright, probably thinking that he'd killed this school girl.
    Of course she was OK.

    • @1546592
      @1546592 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It wasn't easy. THey got panced 2-0 in a 3 test series. The two test they lost they were destroyed. They were never in it. And furthermore I don't think their batting lineup was dismissed for less than 320 in the 4 full innings they batted. And this was an Aussie team that at full strength would've being Laird, McCosker, I Chappell, G Chappell. Hughes, Border, Marsh, Bright, Lillee, Dymock and Thompson. Plus talent to call on like Hookes, Pascoe and R Hogg. Admittedly Australias selection policy was somewhat in dissaray as the ACB establishment would've being determined to get square with the Packer players and this would've had an affect as the Packer Australian went to West indies earlier that year and drew 1-1 in a supertest series. So they could match it with them. But the Windies were a unified team and Australia wasn't. But still I reckon this was a better win for the West Indies than it was in 84-85 where they won 3-1.

    What made Roberts so dangerous was his well thought out concept to always vary his pace so that that batsman would not get used to use. This approach meant that the batsman never knew what was coming next,the medium paced dobbler or the extreme pace lifter threatening your throat and face. He passed that tactic on to Holding and Co - hence the many injuries to batsmen around the world.

You had your Bumrahs of the world, Steyns of the world, Lees and Akhtars of the world, you have Wasim and Waqar, Lillee and Thomo, but none could ever come close to what Roberts, Holding, Croft, Garner and Marshall achieved.

      Jimmy broke his jaws thrice in one series against The Caribbeans. The claim of him playing fast bowling comfortably is a myth. Yes, he was brave, and didn’t flinch while getting hit just like Brian Close of England, but he used to get hit nonetheless. While playing them comfortably, there’s only a certain Sunny Gavaskar, who knew how to play them.

    • @subtyrant
      @subtyrant  ปีที่แล้ว

      The only time Roberts was timed in match conditions was when the University of Western Australia measured Thomson, Lillee, Roberts and Holding using high speed cine cameras at the Perth test in 1975. The technique used lots of film up, so they only measured a few overs. Thomson's fastest was 160.45km/h (99.70mph). Roberts was 2nd at 150.67km/h (93.62mph). If you look on the internet you may see posts that Roberts was clocked at 159.49km/h but that is a listing error on a cricinfo stats page, with that speed actually being Jeff Thomson's 2nd fastest delivery. I've emailed them more than once about it but they don't seem interested in correcting it. In that same set of measurements Holding's fastest was 148.54km/h (92.30mph). At that time Holding was only 21 years old, so it's reasonable to assume he got a bit faster in his mid-20s. The report from the 1975 test stated that Roberts was unwell during the session of play where he was measured, so it's reasonable to assume he bowled faster. Both Roberts and Holding took part in the 1979 fast bowling competition and both were slower than the 1975 measurements. I've never found a reliable speed measurement for Marshall.
