Racers can signal for their pacing partner to increase speed, cavendish "nods" his head several times to increase the pace. The riders need to be very focused on not losing the draft when accelerating, as the penalty for falling just a little behind is massive at these speeds.

The Derny rider: Michel Vaarten was a belgian national keiren champion. I saw him in 1987 at a CRIT in Indiana. He rode for Schwinn IcyHot with Danny Van Haute. Vaarten used the Adidas StI/Manalo shoe pedal system. You flipped a small lever(with your hand- on the side of the pedal) to lock or unlock the shoe. The sole of the shoe had grooves that mated with the pedal. It was the coolest thing. I was 14 years old. I'll never forget that day.

Although keirins give the derny an airing on TV, it's motor-paced events in which pairs of derny pacers (or drivers) and cyclists race against each other which get Graham excited. “In a race, the pacer is the brains and the rider has to do as he's told,” he says.

In this event the racers are being "moto-paced." By riding behind the motorized cycle, the racers don't have have to contend with as much wind resistance and can go faster with the same amount of effort. That said, they are still putting out massive power and consequently going extremely fast for the distance they are covering.
Racers can signal for their pacing partner to increase speed, cavendish "nods" his head several times to increase the pace. The riders need to be very focused on not losing the draft when accelerating, as the penalty for falling just a little behind is massive at these speeds.
The derny race is definitely a strange beast, and tends to run very differently from other events. Because the racers don't need to rely on their competitors to get a draft, there is rarely a sprint finish, and instead the race is won by whoever can sustain their power for the entire duration.
In the video, which only starts at the very end of the race, Cavendish is able to lay down the hammer on the last lap and catch up to Ewan who is beginning to slow before the finish.
