That would be never. As a functioning member of society, you are prone to having responsibilities. Unless you were referring to permanent hibernation...
Good presentation. I thought I might make a comment on one of the stages of activity and hibernation in bears called fall transition. Fall transition is a period after hyperphagia (the period of excessive eating and drinking to prepare for hibernation) when metabolic processes change. Bears voluntarily eat less but continue to drink to purge body wastes. They become increasingly lethargic, resting 22 or more hours per day, often near water. Active heart rates fall from 80-100 beats per minute to 50-60 per minute. Sleeping heart rates fall from 66-80 beats per minute to less than 22 per every 60 second time period.

As alien as this seems to us, imagine if someone told a fish that we sleep for 7-8 hours every day. A fish wouldn't understand it as they never close their eyes, or lie down for a nap lol
Yes, but you can reverse that, and imagine a fish telling you that it sleeps without needing to close its eyes and that it doesn't need to lie down in order to sleep. You would believe that because you have enough brainpower to do so. So, a fish wouldn't understand our nocturnal 8 hours of sleep cycle solely because they don't have enough brainpower to do so, and not because they can't relate.
@@fraist1 I don’t think that was the point. I think the point was that we think it’s strange that animals can sleep for so long and drop to -2,9 degrees C in body temperature for months. But it’s just what you’re used to. A fish is used to not sleeping, a human is used to sleep everyday. A bear can hibernate for months and give birth at the same time. It sounds weird but it’s just what you’re used to and then you’ll find it the most normal business in the world. I think that was their point
I have a speculation about interbout arousal, I think the genes of the hibernating animals also regulate the periods in which they go in and out of torpor as to prevent total shutdown of the bodily systems of said hibernating animal and plays a crucial role in the overall hibernating process of the animal thank you ted-ed for another snazzy animation and educational video!! 😁😁
I never even thought of something like this. I always thought intergalactic space would be impossible, unless we find away to travel through the fabric of space and time, but this whole hibernation thing is actually kinda brilliant. Much like everything else we create, we first have to look at the things around us.
Hi from England, Vladimir! The animation is always amazing isn't it!? It's incredible the quality their videos have with so a constant upload schedule! Informative: yep, Beautiful: yep - we need more of that on TH-cam!
🌿 Looking at the natural world, learning from it and applying the new knowledge to medical situations always amazes us! 😄 It shows the power of science! Anyone agree?
I'm writing a zombie apocalypse story, and one of the traits of the zombies is that if they’re left alone with no prey or stimulus, they slip into a hibernating/torpor state until roused by animals or survivors. I'm trying to figure out how plausible that'd be and how long a zombie could stay in the state before just withering away. (They’re living zombies, a bit like 28 days later, so there's no decaying going on or anything)
Mihir Bindal In sleep, your heart and breathing rate stays normal and the brain activity increases while during hibernation all three of them are reduced significantly.
Awesome video but somewhat misleading title... You see you didn't actually compare sleep with hibernation. Instead you just explained what hibernation is. Except for this, the video is really nice ;)
Piano Man - Piano Covers: Hahahahahaha nice one! But actually there's a difference for your desktop too. Hibernation consumes less power. It's similar to shutting down, but the programs etc will be stored in the memory. Sleep consumes more power and it kinda also performs the same task. The difference is quite prominent if you use a laptop.
What we've already seen from 1 year without human pollution, if we could really hibernate for even 5 years, and everyone participated, we could potententionally "renew" the earth by simply not being a part of it for a while. Imagine having a designated holiday for 5 year hibernation every 20 years.
So how can we differentiate between hibernation and coma? What if we induce hibernation by decreasing heart beat and other biomechanisms and supply energy and water through intravenous method?
I saw a program once where they took a little blood from a squirrel while it was hibernating and then waited until it came out of hibernation. They put that blood back in and within minutes it went back into hibernation. So if they can perfect this for human space travel I imagine it would work in a similar way. Not only would it make those super long trips more feasible by not having to carry nearly as much food, water and oxygen but it would also make the trip mentally much easier to tolerate since most of the trip would be in a non-waking state. (For safety, obviously not all members of the crew would be hibernating at once).
Giving birth while hibernating is something that I wish women could do. We could go into hibernation for the birth then come out of it when the baby is born.
It always surprises me how much we do not know. I started this video expecting to know the complete answer but I'm humbled yet again to realize we're still figuring out new things about something I learned in preschool.
Sleep is when your computer saves your computer's current state (ea opened windows and program and things you typed and all) in memory (short term storage) while it goes into an off like state - drawing minimal amount of energy. Hibernation, which was developed for laptops is when your computer saves its current state in the hard disk (long term memory) and actually turns off.

Are you still conscious in any way? The video seemed to imply that you are with the "going five weeks without sleep" line.

You still have to poop and pee while sleeping.
Sleeping needs more energy than just sitting and watching TV... In other words, you burn more calories in your sleep than if you sit down all day
