      Moon is a barren wasteland.
      We were right doing other things with the limited budget.
      Venus is where we should focus on. It has gravity, an atmosphere, and lots of other useful crap like energy. Can make a floating habitat.

    I watched the first landing as a teenager and it was the most exciting thing ever. But subsequent landings rapidly lost the public’s interest because, basically, it had been done so what was the point? My understanding at the time is that the last three flights were cancelled because of public apathy.

    Because basically Nixon wanted to end the program early, which ironically was made more palatable by the overall success of the program, and reduce NASA’s budget. In its place NASA was allowed to build and send missions to Skylab, and develop the STS (Space Shuttle). NASA consumed a huge chunk of the federal budget in the 1960’s, and Nixon needed that money to fund the war in Vietnam.

    • @mikegardner107
      @mikegardner107 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      NASA’s budget had never constituted a “huge chunk” of the Federal Budget or GDP. Nixon ended the Vietnam war. LESS money was needed for to end the war than to continue fighting it. Neither Nixon nor anyone in Congress or the Senate presented the country with the needed mission to continue pursuing creating a moon base or a base and colony on Mars. Thus those areas of space exploration were left to languish in SF and its fans.

    Don't underplay the importance of it being f_____g expensive. NASA budgets nowadays are miniscule by comparison. And we had accomplished what we set out to (demonstrating that we could get there, and not just as a fluke, we could do it repeatedly). So, yes, politics, in a way.

    Because NASA has forgotten how to go. Just because they did it once doesn't mean they can do it again, a lot of time has passed and if you don't continue with a specialization, you end up like this. They really have doubts about the people who will take there, like what happened to Apollo 13 could happen again. But somehow Elon Musk doesn't doubt himself at all and seems ready to sacrifice many people for this cause.

Elon is a convi cted fra udster by the SEC for enriching himself at investors expense. He would be the worst of politicians constantly makes things up that would have to break physics turns in other peoples work as his own. Examples he wanted to spin stabilize starship on its intermediate axis. There is a whole theorem that shows it won't work. Google t handle in zero g. Before solar city failed he claimed he made solar panels that look like stale and were more efficient, nope he sold off the shelf panasonic solar panels. Those are just some of the long list of why you wouldnt want elon in charge of anything more than a popsicle stand.
