When you filet fish, try leaving the tail end in tact instead of cutting all the way through. This gives you a better hold to remove the meat from the skin.
I think that "Yellow Bass aren't fir to eat" is, for lack of a better term, a "wife's tale". I have people I meet on the water quite often turn their noses up when I tell them I'm targeting Yellow Bass for the table. However, I don't believe that most of them have actually ever tried them, and instead, are simply repeating something they've heard. I target them specifically in a small lake near me that is full of them, some of which are up to 1.5 pounds. Another great thing about them, as you mentioned, is that they are normally prolific where they do live, and there is no size or bag limit. Therefore, I never feel any hesitation keeping a mess of them. Great video. Keep up the fantastic work!
Yellow bass are the bomb ..always keep a few to mix in with my red ears and crappie.. we don't have a lot here in my area in southeastern VA.. but some of our lakes do stock them ..
There is a lake called Horseshoe in Illinois, it has a lot of yellow bass and some people just kill them? I never understood that, they fight good for their size and taste good.
Yellow bass is our favorite kind. And we have never removed that red line. No taste to it. In fact we just caught 19 today at Prairie Creek Reservoir Muncie Indiana.
We don't have Yellow Bass here in San Diego CA. But we has a mess of nice freshwater lakes I'm saving for a new fishing kayak a Old Town Motorized 106 until then I been deep sea fishing on the boats here at H&M Landing. Hope you guys get to going deep sea out of Texas the Red Snappers are delicious .
try using a fork to hold your fillet down while you are taking the skin off. or leave just the last bit of the fillet hooked to the fish, flipit over and take off the skim .Throw the fish and skin all attached in the scap bucket. we don't have yellow bass were I live.
white bass are so good, i discovered that a few years back after a life of being told "they arent good". I was really wanting to stock up my freezer and seen the white bass busting the surface across the lake. I got into a bunch of them and the meat was soooo clean and white almost like crappie. Just cut the blood line out and it was a very good meat.
Making fish tacos!!! Thank you for the vid on how to make them.We are using cod and just a couple little different things....like spinach.First time I ever saw a yellow bass. You guys are AWSOME!!!
Yes. I usually use plyers and grab the skin peels away off both sides with the scales. Steak them. Score them slices to the bone both sides for complete cooking. See the meat cooked breaks away from the bones leaving backbone and ribs as one unit boneless 100% meat recovery. Tiny bones where the dorsal fin is can screw this up a bit but even the fin usually pulls away bones intact with the fin if you leave at least enough of it on the piece to be able to grab it. Filets OK but meat loss is a issue even when it's done perfectly.
Yes id put some in the cooler if I got into a small bunch... here in middle Tennesse they arent as numerous except in larger water and even there I see more white bass. They look really good and had a fishing buddy i see sometimes at an old deep quarry lake, he lucked into a rare yellow that wasnt supposed to be there. Yellow bass arent stocked there so he figured they came in on a migrating duck's foot. Ha - he let go most of the bluegill and cats he'd caught and took the big yellow bass home- so they must tasseleast as good as slab bluegills.
Yellabass, yummo! Thats my target fish this week. They re all in the shad schools in the early morning. No size or bag limit here in Texas. I keep 8" and bigger. Good firm white meat.
I've never had yellow bass. I don't think they are found in Wisconsin, where I do almost all of my fishing. Live in Texas now, but have not been fishing locally yet.
I live in west Tennessee my dad called them stripe jack. I've ate them taste like fish no better no worse than others. I haven't just sought after them catch them crappie fishing mostly small ones. But if I catch some nice ones they going in the skillet with every thing else. They put up good fight for sure.
Never had them...or white bass..I'm from delaware, and there none here...but I'd be all about them both if I ever get to an area that has them!..closest I've had we're hybrid stripers and white perch
This fryer has an oil filtration system that we use. Just drains the oil into a reservoir and then we clean out the leftover fish fry particles. We will usually use the same oil for 5-10 frying events!
Went fishing with a buddy of mine and he didn't keep the yellow bass. I had never had it but it looked like a white bass only yellow so I said let me take them and try them. They were great!
Cole you fillet a fish just like I do I'm a fisherman I've been fishing since I was 11 years old I'm 62 nowI enjoy fishing I haven't finished up here in a long time I got a fishing pole in a fishing license but I don't use them I like to fish out of a kayak like what you're doing in this video but I had to leave my kayak in Florida lm enjoying all your videos I'm a saltwater fisherman that's what l did in Florida my biggest largemouth 11-4oz
I don't eat a lot of yellow bass but when I do, I'll filet them up the same way you do. Totally agree with you on the red meat: cut it out. Very nice video. Good job.
Have you tried leaving the fillet connected to the tail? Then you flip the fillet over and you have no problem holding it down while you do the other side. With just a little practice, it's the fastest way to do a fillet.
First visit to your site, good content ....we don't have yellow bass in my part of VA,they look great to me and some sweet potato fries....the lake i fish has stripers and hybrid bass as well as large and smallmouth...for some reason there are hardly any crappie.....when I'm in FL we catch them in lakes on the St Johns river, about the same size as those yellow bass....sometimes up to 2 lbs....thanks for sharing...
Thanks for stopping by! Yeah they are only native to central US along the Mississippi River and it’s connecting drainages. They taste a lot like white bass. There is an over abundance of them here and it’s because a lot of people do not really harvest any because they don’t consider them a very good fish to eat. We want to fish the St. John’s someday! Looks to be a very beautiful and “fishy” place!
Cole & Jay thanks for the shout out....what state do you live in....it's nice to have great action like that wherever you live....i moved away from the Midwest having lived in IL my first 20 years to FL and now split residence between FL and VA....are you fishing near a nuke or power plant...just curious- I worked building a nuke prior to moving from IL- I have not been back to the lake but I understand the fishing there is great ....tight lines l
I have never eaten yellow bass, but have eaten lots of white bass and Strippers (very good). Usually when catching whites, i hook into a few yellow bass. I will keep them next time and try them.
Guess it's that time of the year again. I went to a local feeder creek hunting for some spring run white bass today. Couldn't keep the spawning yellow bass off my line so I started keeping the bigger ones. Was catching about 15 to 1 yellows over whites. I heard they were tasty so I'm looking forward to frying those dudes up soon. Fillets were bigger than I thought they would be.
I think yellow bass taste great. To be honest they taste better than white bass. I don't always catch them but when I do they go straight to the frying pan. Great channel, you guys are awesome. God bless.
@@COLE_and_JAY I have a 15 FT Aluminium boat with a 30 hp motor and 55lbs trolling motor or we can paddle But really motor is best to get to the good spots .I know y'all paddle alot but I have to cover a little more ground
I never caught a yellow bass. Would try tho. I can't belive you don't cook the eggs. If you get a paddle 8-12 inches longer, it will improve your yakking 10 fold. The strokes will be Way more comfy, and it won't shift side to side with each stroke. Nuther great vid ~rad~
Here in NC we eat stripers, white bass and hybrids (striped bass/white bass), but I haven't ever eaten a yellow bass. I'm not sure if we even have them. Looks tasty though. Great video!
I’ve done that in the past but I haven’t really ever had an issue with fishy tastes because most of the reason why a fish is “fishy” is because of the red meat. When that is removed, it makes a huge difference! I do though usually soak my fish in a saltwater and lemon juice bath before cooking. That will help enhance the flavor of the meat too! Definitely not saying that buttermilk doesn’t work because it definitely does help! 👊
Cole , pappy Green here!!!..we’ve been cleaning our fish this way for years!!!..removing the dark meat from them makes a world of difference too!!!..just remember to keep them cold as possible until you can clean them…👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I love to eat fish but I don’t think I ever have had the chance to try yellow bass. Yes we've had yellow bass and it's one of my wife's favorite fish
Nice catches bud
Another great video.
Yes. Yellow bass are so good.
This is very cool
Thank you!
I love when you get on some yellow bass crappie you catch 1 probably gonna pull in 10 or so for next hour ....super fun

They are surprisingly tasty!
I do like me some yellow bass. Fun to catch and great fried up.

Never caught one in NYS. Not even sure if we have them here. We do have both marine and freshwater stripers.
I'd be happy to catch them fish 🐟. They look good to me keep on Fishin Ya'll.
yep spoiled up here in Dakota won't touch yellow or white bass . Do you eat big mouth to ???
No, we just fish them for sport. Occasionally if one is accidentally killed in the process we will keep it, but it is rare.
There is a lake called Horseshoe in Illinois, it has a lot of yellow bass and some people just kill them? I never understood that, they fight good for their size and taste good.
I think that's a Jackson Coosa kayak?? I had one was a super rive/lake kayak! Good video!
Great video. I've never had yellow bass. I love Crappie . Is there another way to cook it besides the deep fry?
Yeah! You can grill, pan sear, or bake them!
Yellow bass is our favorite kind. And we have never removed that red line. No taste to it. In fact we just caught 19 today at Prairie Creek Reservoir Muncie Indiana.

Hey you two. I seen one guy get the red meat out by not hold the knife tight to the skin when he removed it. It left the red attached to the skin.
Do you ever duck hunt up there
You bet! I had a tough season this year compared to previous seasons, but I go out as many days as I can!

Yes! I do it that way with an electric knife!!!
Can anyone tell me WHY the kayak has holes in the bottom to let water in ??? Just love watching "J" and Cole fishing. Keep it going Red wolves.
The holes are there to help drain water when it gets into the kayak. They are handy when fishing fast moving water. 👍
Certain people confuse specie with wipers and striped bass. Some of the hybrids have mercury and other chemicals in the meet.
I've always thrown them back, someone told me that if you cut out the blood line they are good. I will sure try them. thanks
Yeah! They are really tasty. It’s good to cut the red meat off of all fish! Thanks for watching!

Try holding your knife along the fillet and make a shallow V on both sides of the red meat to remove it, you’ll have less waste that way
I cook and eat them on a regular basis I live on Lake Guntersville we have tons
I haven't eaten any yellow bass yet but I will get some soon.
