How will you learn of Mike Lindell's latest My Pillow offer and admire his big shiny crucifix, displayed prominently outside his shirt? How would you know you no longer need to enjoy a steaming plate of vegetables, when you can pop a few extremely expensive gelatin capsules full of vegetable dust and not have to bother enjoying a delicious fresh meal ever again?
As others have said, skipping commercials is a big plus. For me, I also use DVR to record sporting events so I can begin a game when its convenient for me and skip commercials until I catch up with the live broadcast.
2024 streaming has become so complicated with so many logins and everything else I’m done with it and going back to DVR and I’m purchasing my first DVR today
I'm a big fan of over-the-air antenna TV and have been using a Tablo Dual tuner DVR and would be lost without it. Can't miss my Leave it to Beaver, MASH, The Fugitive, ...
I also have Tablo and mainly record my local news, sports and national evening news every day. Fortunately having a good antenna helps makes Tablo work efficiently
The latest 4-tuner Tablo is awesome. The Tablo DVR is the only way to go imo. People who don't have one don't get it and some will even argue about it.
@@robnation2475 Does the Tablo have smooth scrubbing during fast forward and rewind for finding locations in the playback or does it skip in blocks? Also I assume it has Live TV Pause?
I love my dvr! I loathe commercials and sitting through them even though they are shorter on streaming still gets on my nerves. Plus having to have every streaming service to watch one particular show is a pain. I still pay for cable.
DVR is great for skipping commercials. Blast thru football games. 30 seconds gets you right back in the huddle, snap and game on... No gay BugLight commercials.
I HATE COMMERCIALS! I have had a DVR for 18 yrs. I love recording all the football games on different channels that I couldn't possibly watch live. I watch them when/if I feel like it! Wanting to cut the cord I need to figure out how to continue to DVR stuff. That's a BIG DEAL for me!!!
My cable company just raised my rate another $20 per month. Before COVID I was paying less than $100/month now its $165 so I canceled my service and got a Zapper box. It looked like the easyst way to get broadcast TV. I just plug my antenna into the F connector and plug my TV into the HDMI.
Yes. I have a TIVO and still use it, because NONE of the streaming providers allow recording by TIME and CHANNEL, and TH-camTV is constantly "forgetting" to record a show even though it shows the check mark. Also, the TIVO has much better quality on my Antenna than streaming. I also still have my BetaMax for my tape collection. My VHS broke, so looking for a replacement cheap at the Salvation Army store and rummage sales. What I REALLY want is to hook my capture card back up where it can record streaming channels, but I would need to strip out the HDCP and its more hassle than its worth. You also overlooked that the streaming providers do NOT provide the extra channels like MeTV, etc, so I have to use the Tivo to record those.
I have a TiVo edge that I added a 8tb drive. Paid 200 for the edge on ebay with lifttine service . I have not found any streaming service with all the channels I need or mess up all the time. Plus how do I record love sports shows that run over by an hour or two. TiVo is the best
I still like to have a (OTA) DVR. Some shows are simply not available on streaming, or are available at a premium. Good examples are Jeopardy!, sports games on national networks, Decades' Through the Decades, and History Channel/PBS documentaries. I was able to watch a full season of How the States Got Their Shapes and NOVA without having to subscribe to History Vault or PBS Passport, respectively, because I just recorded them via my OTA DVR. Some DVRs also don't offer subscription fees. Prominent examples of are Sling TV's AirTV and the Fire TV Recast. Then again, this is admittedly a niche use case. Not everyone needs a DVR.
That helps. Maybe I should go back to a TV provider that still offers. I gave up Directv for personal reason. I hooked on Newsmax. I hear not all providers carry Newsmax. What to do now?
The DVR is good for non popular shows like anything on PBS, History or any niche channel that's not in the popular zigiest. Good example is American Pickers
We use an antenna for locals and Philo for cable replacement. Love the subchannels on the antenna and we use the DVR on both. There's no guarantee something will be available to stream at any given point.
We do the same as the antenna brings in the locals delivered to an old TiVo Premiere and a Series 3 both lifetime subscriptions. Philo Tv works very well for us as well, as we like the price and the channels are very fitting for us. It’s very nice to have the antenna available if/whenever the internet is out.
We have had several generations of TiVo devices and still pay for cable. It’s actually cheaper than TH-cam tv and we get more channels. I tired TH-cam TV for 2 months and was surprised by the quality difference in the signal. Watching the US Open (tennis) the colors were brighter and crisper through cable compared to TH-cam TV. I went back and forth and tried other channels as well. We have nearly gig speed so that is not the problem. So far we are sticking with cable for now.
Hope not too late to ask for advice. I have a 12yo DVR with $46 a month Mediacom through my apartment. It holds 100 hours. It costs me $40 a month? I hate bottom screen loss when using remote. Am wondering if Tivo is the way to go. I think it's an additional $8 - $10 a month?
You skipped over the whole reason TiVo is a failure. Cable companies, like Comcast, got into the DVR game, and they still offer them, as far as I'm aware. Then you get the broadcast service and storage, all in one.
The Cable Companies stole the DVR patent. Tivo sued many of the Cable companies for patent infringement of a DVR technology. And they have won every lawsuit. Tivo is just living off the money they make from all of the other companies
@@TELEVISIONARCHIVES They also partnered with Direct TV, at least for a time. That still didn't make them a household name. They could have been like Kleenex, or BluRay. They didn't innovate or market the product properly from jump street.
I think I got my first DVR around 2007. It was great being able to record episodes of American Idol and then walk them later when I had a chance. Of course that wasn’t the only thing I recorded, but it was one of the main shows. Maybe I shouldn’t admit to that now?
"Do you need a DVR?" Honestly, once you started using adjectives like "messy" or "silly," I knew what your answer was going to be. Folks should use what works for them, OTA, streaming, VOD, whatever.
So I want to use spectrum 15 channel setup I think but it does not include a dvr. It does incl 50 hrs of cloud recording but recording my gold promos is more than that. So what do I do? I’m using golf channel. Thanks
I still like DVR to record same day programs that are live if I want to watch it right then, cut out commercials and so on. I may need it less than I think since I can't watch everything I record that day at times but still love it.
I still use ota dvrs. I have two dual-tuner Tivos and a dual tuner AirTv. But to be honest, ever since I started using playon tv, I rarely need it. For me playon with Plex is the best
Two good reasons are cool commercials and when new episodes of a show come out, you usually have to wait a while until it’s on streaming (or torrent it).
It's a must when you have OTA unless you want to be a slave to TV schedules. In our house we dabble in everything. Have had a Tivo OTA with an 'all in' subscription for years. Husband has a Tablo. Our OTA is a bit unreliable so we keep a few streaming services as a mainstay. Services like Hulu, Paramount and Peacock cover the majority of major network content with the exception of sports. We are Prime members so we have it's content. We can pickup other services like Netflix, Disney or HBOMAX briefly when there is enough content to watch. We had TH-cam TV but found it's expense was like cable with many channels we did not use. For that kind of money we found one can bundle many streaming services and target one's preferences. Now we use the OTA for sports and backup (Tivo) in case our internet goes down. To be fair, there is a lot of management juggling all these things ... hardware, software and programming but I don't mind staying on top of programming while my husband is the hardware guy. Luckily our TiVo hardware remains solid and Tablo has turned out to be trouble free as well. Bottom line .... recording OTA content is the way to go if you purchase something like Tablo with a lifetime subscription. However, with ATSC 3.0 being implemented across the country eventually our DVR's will need converters but that's a ways out yet.
I have Android Shield TV. I watch TV from Google TH-cam. Unlimited Cloud storage. Shield TV gives free updates without paying. Thousands of apps to watch. I make Digital copies from DVD's and Blu-rays that I own, so I don't have to buy or rent streaming movies or watch commercials or have my movies edited. AT&T would always tack on fees when you rented the equipment or raise prices out of nowhere. Little heat comes from the Android Shield box Vs owning a DVR. Less energy too.
When the internet goes down, which it will eventually. Tablo keeps working on your network. 47 Free channels. Most 5.1 with Commerical Skip. Very little delay when it comes to sports. Better picture then streaming.
keep those DVDs, just in case someone, one day, decides there's something 'wrong' with your favorite film, and no one should be allowed to watch it anymore - physical media is the best way to go, whenever possible
I have the 3rd gen (Black) Tablo DVR. We record all our shows at home and watch them remotely on the road. The 4th gen Tablo doesn't have the remote access capabilities so thats why we are stuck with the 3rd gen box. We can access Tablo via Tablo app remotely somewhere USA and use our Firestick with the Tablo app to watch all our dev recorded shows. I know after a few days of broadcast shows you can go to Hulu or some other streaming service and pickup the same show. Is there another DVR that can record and let you have remote access to recordings? Should I install a computer to act as a DVR or use some DRV cloud software>
I remember having Dish Network and having the Hopper DVR that could record 16 shows at once. That was just about 3 years ago…..it seems so unnecessary now!!
Hi , my father in law uses the COGECO and BELL recorders ....that has a very low quality schedule recorder. I watched tons of video's and i have yet to find one that could replace it. He watches very specific TV channels that play foot ball broadcasted in french. What would you suggest?
The day my satellite dish died, back in 2008, I made the decision to "cut the cord." I contacted the provider, cancelled the service, packed up the DVR and shipped it back. I have Netflix and Amazon video (benefit of my Prime membership I already had) for selecting TV or movies to watch, plus other free channels on my Roku. Do I miss my DVR? No, I don't. Did I really need it to begin with? No, I didn't, but at the time it was one of those things that "everyone" had so I had to have it as well. I'm in a major city, so I also have the benefit of many local channels via a digital antenna.
What is your opinion when the viewer only gets their programming from ATSC? There are still some network programming that doesn’t end up on a streaming service. Seems a device like the homemade DVR you had in the past would be a decent fit. MythTV anyone?
Is there something like an open-source DVR that can record pre-programmed (timer) livestreams from websites and save them in the cloud? I am thankful for any kind of help!
The part of the old TIVO console from the early 2000's that I miss was the User Interface. It simply made sense. It was fast and responsive and you felt like you had full instant control of your show. Watching football with it was amazing because you could quickly skip back 15 sec instantly and then replay the play in slow mo. No modern streaming service's DVR options close even close to how precise TIVO was.
I just got cloud dvr and am thinking about going back to a physical dvr. If you're used to a real dvr you may be surprised by how awful cloud dvr controls are.
Recording is needed for sport. No streaming service I can watch an old sport match. Over 30 years no one has access to matches where Messi and Ronaldo played. Not everything on TV is series or movies.
I use FireTV Recast for OTA channels. With good antenna it allows me to cord cut even further not needing higher level steaming apps that contain local channels in their subscription.
I like the idea of recording shows I don't get a chance to watch over the air. And then program it off an antenna. OG and then it will record something I've programmed in to streaming? What world are you living in? I'm not sure I guess we're not talking about the same issue. But I'll guarantee you legally if you start recording somebody's data you better be sure you're not rebroadcasting it.
We've had a Magnavox DVR since 2005. We record programs FREE that are fed by our Dish service. No subscription costs and no equipment rent. But also no HDMI and low resolution. works with it was crushed. We don't stream or pa
I don't have cable TV, I use an antenna for over the air digital TV reception. There ae shows I want to watch at times I can't be in front of the TV. There are often two shows I want to watch that air at the same time on different channels. I want to tell my DVR to record a certain channel with a specific start and end time. I'd like a DVR to have four built in TV tuners so I can record up to four different channels at the same or overlapping times if necessary. One of the most important features is the ability to skip commercials. My current DVR is dying and I can't find a replacement. It has two built in tuners and programmable buttons to skip forward X number of seconds, I have mine set to advance 30 seconds with each button push and and a different button set to reverse 10 seconds in case I over shoot with the 30 second advance button. All the streaming options are not available to me, cost more than i'm willing to pay or don't provide the service and options I want. DVR's are not dead!
I have tried to continue with the Tivo but it is increasingly difficult working with my cable provider. They won't say you cannot use the Tivo but they aren't making it easy to continue with it either. The end of an era.
I have a TiVo for OTA channels and really like it as it will automatically skip commercials on playback. And I have TH-cam TV but their cloud screen is terrible as you can’t choose to record only new shows and you can’t erase single episodes. So it may have unlimited capacity but I don’t want every episode of a show recorded and then sort thru trying to find newest episodes.
A cloud DVR is as current as it goes. Either on demand streaming or something you watch from what you saved to the cloud DVR if you subscribe to one of the live tv streaming services. No big boxes required like a DVR from a cable company. DVR is better than network on demand content due to you can FF commercials.
Cost is important 2017 I purchased the TIVO Roamio OTA 1TB all in package $550. It is still going strong today no commercials no additional fees. Streaming (Unless free) and cable can kiss my scissors.
Having cut the Cable-TV cord in early 2018, and now relying on OTA programming, I find the TABLO 4-Tuner Network-Connected DVR extremely useful. I don't subscribe to the channel guide, so other than the one time cost of the TABLO device and an external HD, this is all free. I can watch the programs I want to watch, when I want to watch them, even though they often air at odd times of the night, or opposite other programs, or if they originally aired while I was working.
The old DVR just worked. I hate having to subscribe or sign up to 15 different places to watch my shows. Then some make you pay or wait a week for a free tv show🤔
Yes, i agree, a Dvr to skip commercials.. Plus, if you can receive Local OTA channels, there's no need to subscribe to a Live Tv streaming service $ 60 $100 to get local Tv channels.,and OTA Dvr is a money saver..
I still use DVRs. It's pretty much the only way to record broadcast television without paying a monthly fee for one thing or another. If I want to stream something or watch TH-cam, I do that, too.
Rural Internet (Starlink and other satellite internet services) don't do well in storms so stored video (DVR etc...) is my primary reason for wanting to own stored video.
Good Lord, can you try to just talk normal without the theatrics of eye brow raising and voice changes, SUPER ANNOYING. As for the dvr, yes most of us would like to be able to pause the broadcast, especially sports, and step away to do aomething else for 30 minutes without losing our place. Most of the programs we watch are from 3rd party apps and not subscription based services.
My sad story follows. We had a few Direct tv receiver/DVRs in the house, I used two and wife used two. She wanted an upgrade to a "Gennie" for a whole house DVR and we turned in out 4 DVRs. I lost some old movies I collected. Some are still broadcasted but edited. I wish I could have saved my movies the way they were before political correctness. or just good old movies.
my wwe wrestling is only on tv plex charges $5 a month for pc dvr service. the good ole days of free media center seam to be over.currently reduced to low definition magnavox dvr w/ hdd so your wronge dvr still lives + its free.
love my DVR record everything. its built right into my cable box. i dont watch those same channels all the time. so for instance i watch 1 or 2 shows on ABC that I DVR thats it. why pay for a subscripton to steam ABC for 1 or 2 shows. now if i miss a episode or it doesnt record for some reason i can always find it on the app or on my firestick somewhere. Same thing with somthing special like shark week on discovery i dont watch it normally but i do when shark week is on and can record it. so why pay for discovery plus for that
Now with streamers all coming with ads we need a great DVR to record all the streamers with HDMI from Apple TV or others to then skip these commercials
Not everyone can afford broadband so ota TV is all they can get, plus elderly people cannot setup the tech for all these services and just want their TV and remote to record similar to their old vcr. There has to be a default no frills basic alternative when people cannot be online.
When I had cable, I got the DVR included with the cable service. It was great to be able to keep the recordings beyond nine months looking at you, TH-cam TV and Hulu plus Live TV), but of course that was only as long as you stayed subscribed, and as long as the hard drive didn't die. ...Doesn't copyright law make it technically illegal for you to "roll your own" digital video recorder? I remember all kinds of weird things with DVRs, not being able to swap drives because of copy protection, etc.
My TiVo is still my favorite al time media device. I have Sling and their DVR sucks ass. I had AT&T U-Verse and their DVR sucked less ass but still sucked ass.
I have not watched "live" tv in years with the exception of a few news broadcasts. I DVR everything and fast forward through commercials.

It Depends On The Streaming Service. from South Louisiana.
You can skip the commercials if you record the show to your cloud dvr. You can't skip commercials if it's a live or "on demand" show.

Is there something like an open-source DVR that can record pre-programmed (timer) livestreams from websites and save them in the cloud? I am thankful for any kind of help!
I love the DVR not everything needs to be Bluetooth
The part of the old TIVO console from the early 2000's that I miss was the User Interface. It simply made sense. It was fast and responsive and you felt like you had full instant control of your show. Watching football with it was amazing because you could quickly skip back 15 sec instantly and then replay the play in slow mo. No modern streaming service's DVR options close even close to how precise TIVO was.
That was funny. I was looking into getting a DVR a couple of days ago.
I just got cloud dvr and am thinking about going back to a physical dvr. If you're used to a real dvr you may be surprised by how awful cloud dvr controls are.
@@senecakw I have been using the TiVo DVR for years but I didn't renew it.
@@edwards.8801 I've used a WOW DVR for 15 years and am going back to it.
Yes you still need a DVR, my mom use it all the time
I like the idea of recording shows I don't get a chance to watch over the air. And then program it off an antenna. OG and then it will record something I've programmed in to streaming? What world are you living in? I'm not sure I guess we're not talking about the same issue. But I'll guarantee you legally if you start recording somebody's data you better be sure you're not rebroadcasting it.
Is there anyway to convert a dish network DVR satellite recorder box that I own, to record a streaming TV device.
We've had a Magnavox DVR since 2005. We record programs FREE that are fed by our Dish service. No subscription costs and no equipment rent. But also no HDMI and low resolution.
works with it was crushed. We don't stream or pa
I have an older Magnavox also. It does ok recording old movies, but doesn't do justice for anything broadcast in HD, 1080p or higher resolution.
Live Sports, local early morning shows, or late night. I see where I could add a tuner card- where can I buy bare bones today?
I would like to find a DRV or even a BluRay recorder that would record in 4K.
I have tried to continue with the Tivo but it is increasingly difficult working with my cable provider. They won't say you cannot use the Tivo but they aren't making it easy to continue with it either. The end of an era.
i have a firetv recast works great
WAIT you Can go wayback machine on tivo?
Hey I have an old Magnavox MDR53H/F7 1 TB 🤭
I have a TiVo for OTA channels and really like it as it will automatically skip commercials on playback. And I have TH-cam TV but their cloud screen is terrible as you can’t choose to record only new shows and you can’t erase single episodes. So it may have unlimited capacity but I don’t want every episode of a show recorded and then sort thru trying to find newest episodes.
My mom still has a dvr. My parents don’t use streaming.
Good audio and video production.
If I want to stream something or watch TH-cam, I do that, too.
yes i love my tablo
Rural Internet (Starlink and other satellite internet services) don't do well in storms so stored video (DVR etc...) is my primary reason for wanting to own stored video.
I was running SageTV on dual Haupaugge cable cards. Fun times. Now TV is 90% propaganda for the regime.
Yeah, you are off the mark with this one. Spectrum TV is charging $9.99 per month for dvr service
I never had a DVR.
Anyone using an HD HomeRun?
You're right I canceled my TiVo as well long time ago it's not worth it
Good Lord, can you try to just talk normal without the theatrics of eye brow raising and voice changes, SUPER ANNOYING.
Using You tube TV now for about a week through a Roku, we will see how that goes, So far , seems to be OK>
What was the purpose of this video? I didn't understand, So Wich is good to you which is bad ? Confused!!!
But... the 4th generation, 4-tuner TABLO is awesome. Best DVR available. No subscription. No weird remote. Best when paired with Roku Ultra.
my wwe wrestling is only on tv plex charges $5 a month for pc dvr service. the good ole days of free media center seam to be over.currently reduced to low definition magnavox dvr w/ hdd so your wronge dvr still lives + its free.
love my DVR record everything. its built right into my cable box. i dont watch those same channels all the time. so for instance i watch 1 or 2 shows on ABC that I DVR thats it. why pay for a subscripton to steam ABC for 1 or 2 shows. now if i miss a episode or it doesnt record for some reason i can always find it on the app or on my firestick somewhere. Same thing with somthing special like shark week on discovery i dont watch it normally but i do when shark week is on and can record it. so why pay for discovery plus for that
Now with streamers all coming with ads we need a great DVR to record all the streamers with HDMI from Apple TV or others to then skip these commercials
cloneralliance
Streaming is to expensive.and if I pay for it why do I have to watch commercials? OTA is my choice.
You must have extra cash to spend.
Security systems, yes on DVR
The biggest downfall on this video is if you use over the air tv.
I love my DVR.But SPECTURM will soon be taking it away. They are making us use the XUMO box.
DVR is still a thing like cDVR
I feckin' HATE all the streaming and DESPERATELY miss DVR. HATE HATE HATE HATE streaming.
Tivo is not a lifetime subscription. It is only good for the life of the Tivo Box.

My TiVo is still my favorite al time media device. I have Sling and their DVR sucks ass. I had AT&T U-Verse and their DVR sucked less ass but still sucked ass.
