  • Too many questions, too few answers. What we do know is that this thing took design cues from a number of cars, parts and styles from the 50-60s. Nobody is really sure who owns this car too.

    This car belongs to Lido ( AKA Lee ) Iacocca. Because of this, it is commonly seen in and around Bel Air / Los Angeles, California were he resides. I know this for the same reasons that I know this car was almost named the Lido. It is in fact a one of a kind hybrid of design in Germany for build in USA. This is the only complete vehicle to come out of research efforts begun in early 2007, just before the break-up of DaimlerChrysler AG. At the time Daimler was ready to close at least one of it's three major US Chrysler manufacturing plants. Because the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois was already completely robotic in it's body division and due to it's companion Belvidere Satellite Stamping Plant ( responsible for the retro "repro" grill on this Royal ), $600 million was eventually invested in the Belvidere Assembly Plant in 2010. The year before, Chrysler had declared bankruptcy yet, in the build up to and as part of the planned substantial investment, the now defunct DaimlerChrysler had designed a test vehicle for the pupose of preparing Belvidere's more than 750 robots to make necessary tool changes automatically, with very fast cycle times. If successful this would allow Chrysler ( or now it's successor out of bankruptcy ), to more easily produce both foreign and domestic automotive designs. Rather than remain idol during the bankruptcy period but without further funding available for new design work or tooling, it was decided to run the line even if for nothing more than the data set that failure would provide. Manufactured in stages mostly performed in 2011, insiders at the plant had said it was to be a 2012 model year car but argued over what it would be named. Many called it the Ghost due to the secrecy mandated by our NDAs and the fact that we all thought nobody but us would ever see the car. As a consultant to Chrysler during the period leading up to it's emergence from bankruptcy, Iacocca once again toured the Belvidere plant. When he first saw the Ghost he fell in love. Many have heard that it was a gift from Belvidere plant manager at the time, Dominic Ventola to Mr. Iacocca. Ventola began working for Chrysler in 1987 after Iacocca had sought him out for the lead position at Chrysler's Warren, Mich., truck assembly plant and they have remained "great friends ever since" said Ventola at a 2009 press conference regarding Chrysler's split from Daimler and it's impending bankruptcy. The truth is that Iacocca had a stock option hold in his retirement agreement. After twenty years it would pay out based on performance of the company. Coming due in 2012, it was expected to pay out at far less than if the company had been solvent and with a better performance record in recent years but it was said to be worth far more than the value of the "American Mercedes" he was now so set on making his. An arrangement was made and in lieu of the options value he quietly took possession in 2013. Dominic Ventola did however gift the car it's name. The legal departments of both companies had a few last details put in place after Daimler AG required that if the car was not to be destroyed, "all Mercedes branding must be removed or altered in a way that it no longer represents the MB name, identity, or service mark". Prep for delivery was personally handled my Mr. Ventola. He said, "Before we roll it out for Lee it has to have a proper name. Did you know Lee's real name is Lido?" he asked. Calling it that was discussed but soon Dominic recalled that Iacocca had often joked during his time at Chrysler that his favorite Chrysler model was from when he'd been at Ford. It was the 1950 Royal. With that in mind and not wanting to infringe on a Chrysler name he had the letters ROYALE custom blocked and cut. It was decided then that since it now had a "Chrysler name" the replacement badges should be an I ( for Iacocca ) but still hint at it's Mercedes origins. We were certainly ahead of our time on this project, but not by that much. It is essentially an American made, W222 based 2014 s550 built in 2011. On the line we referred to it as a W2XX chassis but remember, it was never meant to be a concept car. Those always and only were coming together in Germany during the DaimlerChrysler AG days. This was simply the product of testing a design and build concept not the concept in itself.

      udaysaleen expect the large amounts of tech, headlights, interior and more. This is an try at it and not a complete thought through idea. Mercedes of old held ideals stuck by them till greed finally got them in late 90s. The design of a true Mercedes is elegance without hip trendy things for the time and are built to last. The styles of a older Mercedes is meant to stand the test of time and then some. A Mercedes has not been over designed in a long time. A w123 will outlast any modern Merc as nice looking as they both are one reigns supreme.

    Like it or loathe it, credit must surely go to the craftsmen who fashioned metal and who made many intricate pieces. It is not to everyone's taste, but I am acutely aware that it is one man's dream and we should appreciate the fact that we live in a society that gives us the freedom to be creative and have such extravagant dreams. Not all nations are similarly blessed.

      I feel that it looks like a car trying to imitate the old 600 limos from the 1960s. Those were nice but expensive as hell. Elvis and the Pope owned one of those limos. @mohaamd_7505 7 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      It is a well known fact that the S-class is the most technologically advanced car ever made with 53 control units on board (That's 53 computers, sensors, cameras, LCD display etc.). One simply can't just take all that technology and reinstall it by himself, also given that the headlights and rear tail are Mercedes benz I assumed that the chassis is a Mercedes as well.

    • @KhaledTheSaudiHawkII
      @KhaledTheSaudiHawkII 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mohaamd Almojil Well buddy we all know it's a Mercedes chassis. But you assumed it's an S-class chassis to which you had no logical reason. Mercedes' same technology is available almost on all classes yet I bet you 2c not two chassis are the same.

    I absolutely love the older Mercedes, the chrome, the grille and the star on the top of the hood make them elegant and classic, now, that style is just reserved for the S Class and some lucky E Class or C Class that didn’t happen to get for some reason the “sports” package. If Mercedes built something of this style it would certainly be a hit! The car looks nice, it could be real, it is a “pimped” car however but it’s the classiest primping I’ve ever seen, no jumping and dancing suspension or 22 inch wheels on a purple Crown Victoria with a sound equipment worth more than the car.
    I like it!

    You mentioned Galpin had it on there facebook page. Did they build it? Looks like an extremely high quality build. There's several good photo's of this Royale on Google. If someone out there who has a friend or family member in the Cali Police they will be able to run the plates and be able to tell a lot more. Thanks so much for sharing. Very cool.

      I dont think the design was done wrong in what they tried to achieve. The curves in many places clearly show off very benz-ish aesthetics and their expertise, but also trying to embody the retro hype and some other elements. To me, this is very difficult, Chinese wouldn't be able to achieve this. But I do agree this is not my cup of tea as well.

    Wow. That grill is a big throwback to the older Merc grills. And, all that chrome. I don't think I've seen that much since the 70's. Lol. But, I do know one thing. Somebody DEFINITELY paid straight through the nose for that one-off build. Rrrreally big bucks. Lotsa DeNiro, for sure. I like it. I'd throw some plaid pants on and style n' profile in that bitch, for damn sure.

  • @MEDaSEQ
    @MEDaSEQ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It's an S600 Maybach, used for the long wheelbase, & much easier than fitting a Mercedes dash into a Bentley or Rolls. The head & tail lights have been lifted sourced from an AMG SLS, the fenders have been adjusted to match & the grill is taken from any of the old classic Mercedes, in this case it could be a S600 Pullman. The side sills low behind the front tire is a design cue influenced from the Mercedes McLaren GT sports car. The overall effect is that of a Mercedes McLaren or AMG SLS Sedan & the Bonnet has been given elegant long but slim opening to not make it look ricer or tacky. Overall a very good job, impressive coachwork, looking at this its a wonder these companies aren't as commonplace like the days of old. Insurance cost I presume, perhaps if gets popular enough they could b convince the factories to mold & supply repair parts

    It started as an actual S600. The give away is the interior... which is from a new S600. You wouldn't use a Bentley chassis and then replace it with the exact interior of the S600. That would be hard to pull off anyways. Plain and simply it's just a new body. The head and tail lights prolly came off of a wrecked SLS... and they CAD-ed and stamped some new sheet metal... then threw some chrome and wheels on it. No need to be so dumbfounded and mesmerized by it.

    • @effspot
      @effspot  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, chassis is from a 2014 S-Class.

    • @TonySalyer
      @TonySalyer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      effspot what do you mean when you say "nope"? By "new S600", Andrew is presumably referencing the W222 which debuted as a 2014 model, so you're saying the same thing.
