Im one of the fans that watched this fight the first time and based off certain "moments" i assumed Volk won but now that i have rewatched it twice i agree Islam did win at least 3-2 possibly even 4-1 🤷🏾♂️

Islams striking is very underrated. Everyone talks about his ground game but he is VERY good at catching a shot and then shooting his own shot. And his timing is very good also That’s a very good skill to have especially when your fighting someone smaller than you because there’s usually a power difference. (Not always I know) but I’ve seen him do it quite a few times against volk and it’s not secret volk is a striker so he’s open when he throws his shots
That's pretty much how everyone felt after this fight. Volk surprised people with his grappling, and Islam surprised people with his striking.
I'm rooting for Volk but I'd especially like him to win so we get a 3rd fight between these two. Or if Islam wins, I'd like to see him fight the welterweight champ.

Not be effective against bigger and taller fighter than him, who knows how to manage distance, sadly no bigger fighters in light weight , if fighter tall like suga sean waa in lightweight they would have kicked and punched shit out of Islam, that's why izzy was also very successful at middleweight all he used to do is keep the range and throw legs and punches , well rounded fighters like rob had hard time closing the distance against him but then alex came , same height as him and better striking and after that we all know Izzy is mentally broke.

I don’t think we’re can comprehend how amazing this is, arguably the greatest mma fighter of all time is just casually breaking down fights. you’d think he was just a content creator by the way he looks haha.
Calling the second round murky, and then saying the third is "decisive" for Volk is insane to me. There was only 3 decisive rounds, 1 & 4 for Islam and 5 for Volk. A couple insignificant punches and screaming is not and should not trump 3 and a half minutes of control time and Islam was doing well even before that awesome takedown in the fourth round. Anyway, I gave Volk only the fifth round when watching but I can understand someone whos more biased or someone who judges rounds differently giving both 2 & 3 to Volk. Either way awesome breakdown from one of the best.

I agree round 2 is 100% for islam that punch from Volk was not a knockdown it was more like a slip, Islam had way bigger moments in round 2. I have it 1 2 3 and 4 for Islam, worst case its 1 2 4 for Islam, but nah man i see it 1 2 3 and 4 for Islam and round 5 for Volk.

Watching the early part again it seemed to me like Volk was feinting and threatening kicks a lot, I didn't remember that as much.. But I am unsure how effective that can really be for keeping Islam off him tbh.. I feel it's too much to overcome for Volk bc of matchup as decider just imo. But if anyone can overcome that to be double champ I think it's Volk.. But I still think Islam if I had to bet. Dang, man. I watch everybody's commentary in the MMA space, and you might just be the best at breaking down the fight in a way that even a relative newbie can understand. I find that even the most seasoned commentators (in the UFC) aren't always great at this skill. So hats off, MM. You got a good thing going!

I agree with you about the 2nd round analysis. The hardest part is that so much goes on in certain fights. I didn't feel like anyone clearly won that round. They both did good. I would have been okay if this fight was a Draw. It's crazy that Volk held up better than anyone else has against Islam, and that's people from the weight division above Volk. I highly respect both of these guys. Islam's striking is improving a lot too. So I'm curious how this rematch is going to go.

from a casual, love the breakdown. how do you find the time to train, game and make such good content is beyond me. Makes us appreciate the levels to this game more. Was watching Usman vs Primus at bellator and quite a good viewing on how usman handled the distance with leg kicks causing primus lots of problems. Volks aint no primus though but hoping that Islam does utilize the body kick more to give volk a bit more something to think about. Can't wait for this weekend like surely most of fight fans!!!

As the fight goes on I feel Volk does amazing job of getting Islam to start playing his game, so to speak. Like Volk was able to get Islam to engage him at a better range for him like DJ points out. I love the concept of the 'Void,' that is now part of my vocab 😅 And I feel like Volk went away from his kicks kinda early, but I think it worked. It feels like when Volk gets Islam to trade punches w him in closer range, Volk is winning. That's prob obvious Idk. I just feel like if Islam stays smart and disciplined, it's his fight to lose. But Volk so crafty and impossible to finish! He was so composed and calm w Islam on his back 🤯 And after Ortega it feels really tough to finish Volk. So excited for 2nd fight!

Islam clearly won this fight, but had the fight been 7 rounds, Volk would have taken over. Islam was fading heavy in the fifth while Volk was still there without any cardio issues.

i wanted to let you know mr mighty mouse, that you inspired to me start bjj about 4 years back, and im now a purple belt, so i thank you truly for that, and i hope you never stop making this content!
What's the difference practically speaking, with purple and black? Does the colour indicate a certain moveset or is it just a counter for the number of completed years training?
I think a lot of the "belts" systems in M/A kinda sucks - but Judo is the onlty respectable one imo. Is Jujitsu like Judo where it indicates your actual ability with the harder skills rather than just you performed them all once to a tutor.
Like I was a Yellow belt for ages, because I knew the moves but I demonstrated I could not actually pull it off that well during real sparring. So even though I knew way more moves and stuff, they didn't reward me another belt and I left 2 years later thinking this is terrible!
Looking back it was the best thing for me, I realised at a far later day... The way I was doing that throw relied upon the other person effectively allowing it during a practice, but that would not happen in a fight. Tough lesson to learn, went to throw a guy and he just wiggled out of it lol.
I am a yellow belt then lol fair play Deepcut Judo.
@@DailyCorvid Im not quite sure what you exactly mean, the belts in brazillian jiu jitsu go off a ranking system based off dedication, longevity of how long youve been training, and your skill level. Its given to represent your dedication and skill for the sport, if i were to come in tomorrow first day ever training, and beat multiple black belts several times in a row without tapping once, then i would more than likely get a blue/purple belt one of my classes shortly after, its not "useless" to have these belts in jiu jitsu, if we didnt have these belts, we would have purple belt level individuals rolling with white belt level individuals, if you arent a fan of the belt ranking system, there is always no gi jiu jitsu. A yellow belt isnt even a real bjj belt, its a childs belt, the real ranking system is white, blue, purple, brown, and black. The highest of which being red which only few people have. The reason you didnt move on from yellow belt was simply because you werent skilled enough and dedicated enough to move on yet. its all personal preference of how your instructor feels about you. its all about how well you perform in training, and against tests of skill that your instructor gives you. i hope this helps.

Yes, some big tips to know when going into your first jiu jitsu gym are 1: Drop your ego at the door, nobody likes a tough guy. 2: Always be humble and thankful for the advice given by your instructor and peers, and 3: DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS!!!! Individual learning is a big part of bjj, aswell as group learning, you use eachother to grow. So, you need to ask as many questions as you need to get the full potential you want, trust me, you'll learn alot quicker, and your coach will be IMPRESSED that youre so eager to learn the style. IT WILL BE TIRESOME, but it also WILL BE FUN. you will make friends, learn together, and see eachother progress, when you first take a class, it may seem extremely confusing, or very tiresome at the end of the class, but i promise you the passion will never stop. It gets easier maybe a week in as you start to get the flow of things, and most people get their first belt promotion in 1-2 years, so its a very slow but effective style of learning. Lots of drilling, lots of practing, and usually from 20 minutes to 1 hour of "rolling" which is the bjj version of "sparring." which is where you grapple your partner for around 3 minute rounds, but dont worry, your partner will be slow, and help you learn, knowing that you're new. The bjj community is a great one from my experience, and a great life long skill to have for mental and physical improvement.

I say Islam won round 4 because he was closer to ending the fight via a choke or crank. If Volk's shots were rocking Islam then I'd give it to Volk but because Islam wasn't close to being KO'd by those punches I can't say Volk was closer to finishing. Islam won rounds 1, 2 and 4 while Volk won round 3 and clearly won round 5. It was a really close and great fight.
I'm so excited for their rematch. Both men are just so tough. True Warriors.
Except he showed no real threat, so there is an argument for falling back on damage inflicted, in which case it would go to Islam. Islam was too afraid to lose position to pose a real threat, he was content to hang onto his position, believing (correctly) that that would won him the round.
And fair enough, but I'm not convinced he should get much more credit than a fighter on top and in full guard who is only throwing enough half-ass punches so the ref doesn't stand them up and he can ride out the round in top position.
But there is no correct answer here, and Islam is playing to the judges which I can't fault him for. So it's on Volk to not get trapped in a losing position.

Great take on round 4, body triangle is dangerous position but as you mentioned ibjjf scoring earlier, 4pts scored for taking position. In a 5min round, it is too easy a round to give to the competitor that has the body triangle as it takes more time to escape, especially given the context of being trapped up against the cage. Holding the position to get a round is too easy. Important questions raised in how a round like that should be scored!
It’s the UFC. Damage trumps all. If it’s a close round damage wise then you look at ground control, cage control and aggression.
@@steventapp1375one thing that DJ said I'm confused about is that he said Volk was closer to finishing the fight on round 4 with islam on his back, wouldn't Islam be closer to finishing the fight since all he has to do is get the choke while Volk getting out of the body triangle would just put them both back at a neutral position. Volk lost on the feet and on the ground in the last fight. He looked really good in the last minute of the fight though and it definitely was a very competitive fight. I want Volk to win but you gotta give Islam the first fight guys.
Disagree, Volk dominated and you just didn't notice cuz the guys half the size of Islam. Take away that physical sign, look at the two fighters tactics throughout. Islam started aggressive but ended timid getting absolutely HAND-ROLLED.
Volk definitely wins fight 2 for me,. and I backed Islam before with £20 and consider it LUCK. I will not be backing Islam this time, unless something untoward happens between then and now.
