I didn't even know this game existed until this video. I have been wanting to play a game just like this forever, if there are other games like this one, I'm not aware of them. It seems like it's modern just enough to not be frustrating to play, and complex enough for all us old school rpg nerds to enjoy. Like I said, I've been waiting for a game like this forever (grafix especially, rpg elements, large party to adventure with, the whole shabang). I'll be picking it up this weekend if it's available now. Thanks Slandered Gaming! Always bringing us the good stuff!
Been following Slandered for months now, and I have been considering this game since the demo. Might have to give it a go. I'm jealous that he got to play it early! 😢
Your voice, tone, debit and straightforwardness makes this a must-subscribe channel. No fluff, no cringey jokes, just the facts. Thank you for your review!
WOW! This was arguably the most thorough game review I have seen in a long while - covering topics that are genuinely relevant to a buy, wait or skip decision. Well done!
ran into this video while looking for reviews for this game, and I subscribed after the first five minutes. Great stuff man! You focus on all the right details, and your opinions are both objective, and clearly from the point of view of someone who is open-minded. Looking forward to poking through your other videos as a huge RPG/CRPG fan 🙏🏾
Very nice recommendation. Im looking forward to try this game. I just have to finish pathfinder wotr but its definitly in my list of next game to play. Ty for the quality content , i really appreciate the amount of care and detail of these review
Excellent review. I'll be purchasing this game, if not for anything else but to support such a developer. Here is the hopes of more games like this one, from more talented developers like this game has.
I've been hyped for this since the first demo came out. Very happy to see you were provided a review copy and even more happy that it seems to deliver!
Thanks for the review! I'm thinking of going Champion, since I love melee and I can go heavy into lore/diplomacy and also be a melee class and a dash of healing on the side. Although my usual playstyle is that of an officer, I think having main stat as presence is probably way more important for the things I wanna do with my character.
I played this in the demo but it was too short to see how that pans out. A face character who rallies a party sounds like a fine enough idea, but hopefully the game doesn't force a meta to the contrary. I was definitely worried that maybe hitting things hard might be the most important thing, as it often is.
slandered!! thank you so much for this review; i have been curious about this game for a little while now- the roleplaying exploration affinities are right up my alley, not to mention the art is gorgeous- and i am very excited to finally give it a try! and especially so now, since it has officially earned your seal of approval ^^
Now that I have beat it, I really enjoyed the gameplay and music. But after seeing the ending, it makes me want to stay away from cosmic horror games from now on. I guess I was unfamiliar with Lovecraftian type of endings (I have at least watched In the Mouth of Madness), but the ending for this game was such a let down after all hours of effort I put in. It's not as much the ending outcome, but the abruptness and bad execution of it imo. It's not that you can't have 'Lovecraftian' endings, but you still have to do it well with lead up that makes sense.
The demo ends at the end of the flashback, so I was left with a question. I would think that unread skill books from the skill library are lost afterward, which has huge implications for your level 1 build. Basically, you want to one-point all the relevant magic schools for any skill you wish to learn, as you will never get the chance again. Or maybe I speculated wrong, and your boat inventory and your flashback inventory merge later. No idea.
Thankfully we've reworked the magic system massively for spellcasters! You now get to pick two new spells from a list every time you gain a new magic-tier so you're much less dependent on tomes (though you can still use them) :-) And all in all spellcasting has also been made a lot more powerful and interesting!
@@HighNorthStudios I don't gave a problem with it overall, but the interaction with the flashback is a little metagamey. And the changes sound like the new reason to start over is because you already learned a skill that's in a book, so you should've learned one that isn't in a book. Even if you have enough to get by regardless, FOMO is real. Just two cents, I hope I have time to play at home next week.
Ah, the system is still the same as when I played the demo. If you one-point, you can use a book. You learn spells naturally after three points in a school. So the prologue bonus spells are better taken first, and then you can learn naturally at character level two. The "pro tip" still stands. The dev comment, if I understand it, says that books used to be the primary or only way to learn spells. But in any case, I am not going to turn down having a higher total number of spells for free.
Quite high praise. I wasn't interested in it prior since it's a love letter to really old school RPG design and I haven't been able to get into those. I might have to change my tune for this one, this is also just a great review in general.
Looks awesome. I played Legends of Amberland 1-2 last year and had fun (another old school inspired game series which I'd recommend.) Will try this one for sure!
This does look good. I never played any of the early Ultima games, but I think it's fun that Skald is directly drawing on games from even before Baldur's Gate.
Damn, you beat Mortismal to a full review 😆 he’s only got a first impressions up. Those who follow his channel will get why I’m laughing. Usually by the time others have an initial impressions vid up of a new release, he’s 100%ed the game with 937 hours into it, released the full review.
I think Mortismal recently made a video explaining that he was going to be adjusting his schedule, probably slowing down a bit, can't remember exactly. Maybe that's why.
LOL Yeah I watch Morty regularly and it's SUPER rare that my review is up before his. He's slowing down content creation to allow more time for himself and his son. Makes complete sense as that dude throws out videos a mile a minute. Hats off to him.
@@SlanderedGaming You and Morty are my go tos on CRPGs. On another note: You weren't allowed to play games as a kid, and CRPGs are your preferred genre? That's very surprising considering these types of games appeal to gamers who played this stuff as kids.
Morty is great but I can never tell if he really likes a game. I never watch his reviews to motivate me to play a game but more like I would watch a surgeon performing a complex operation... He reviewed this game but you can never tell if he really liked it... While here you can feel the passion. I think reviewers who 100% lose all heart for the games they review. nice review! and also very useful for a current player with the overview of all the classes and their skills. about spell casters not having a feat that gives them the option to do serveral attacks every turn: it is there - in a way. there is the straght up awesome "cascade" mechanic! every time your magoes or spellcasters cast a spell they do a dice roll. If the roll is high enough, they will be able to cast another spell in the same turn! its super powerful! as you level up, you can increase your max cascade you can do per turn. in other words if you roll high enough you can blast out spells to consume the enemy with fireballs from your eyes and bolts of lightning from your arse... in a figure of speaking :D the cascade feature is something that i would love to see in other roleplaying games as it just tickels my power fantasy a mighty mage :D - if anyone do know about other roleplaying systems that do use it, let me know in the comments :-)
Been waiting for this game since it was revealed! I really hope they do fix the thing with the skill-check and leader thing ,though. That sounds really frustrating, and also immersion breaking.
Wait… why weren’t you allowed to play video games? I’m pretty sure you’re a little younger than my mom and they used to have an Atari 2600 back in Chicago. Was it’s a religious thing or a strict household? Happy to see you enjoying things you missed out on in your adulthood like tabletop rpg’s and story/narrative driven video games.
I was homeschooled as a child and my father believed that video games were a negative influence. He didn't let me play one until the King's Quest series came out. Since they were mysteries and puzzles he felt more comfortable with me playing them.

@@mtaur4113 Yes, its real, Officer is a great party leader, gets all the benefits of a warrior class HP and defence from shield, minus club and two handed weapons, but gets the Orders and good diplomacy. The mage also gets a similar spell but costs mana.
Wonder if it will get a console release at some point. I have it wish listed on Steam, but I'd love to see it on Switch (understanding the UI may be a bit more difficult without the mouse.)
Looks like a fun game! My only criticism is the text. It's hard to read imho. The text during combat should maybe have a dark boarder to give better contrast. The text in the menu should have the drop shadow removed, that too is hard to read at first glance.
Towards the beginning of the video I go over different settings options. One of the options allows you to change the background to a darker color so the text is clearer. You can also change how text looks.
Know what game did the leader skills thing mostly right? Rogue Trader. Automatically uses the person with the highest skill. My only complaint there was the speech skills. It would have made more sense for the character with the higher speech skill than the rogue trader to be the one who speaks.
You can choose to go unarmed though there are no specific feats for it atm! I have been considering a monk class post-launch so stay posted for that :-D
i love combat in rpgs i always crave a good dungeon crawl party banter i dont care about for me baldurs gate 3 without all that romance stuff would be a better game
@@SlanderedGaming nice i will try it out then (its not like i dont companion interaction, but BG 3 was overkill for me, i felt like being on the road with a bunch of sexual predators... everbody was hitting on me nonstop)
So they changed the classes from the early versions...... a shame. I preferred it when there were archetypes and classes, and when there were classes who's main attribute was fortitude. Such a unique system it was . Along with the rule system, it made this a perfect game for me. Now it's just ok. I mean definitely something on my radar, and something i will eventually get to, but i'm no longer that enthusiastic about it or in a a hurry. Missed opportunities here by going the conventional route IMO. No the least of which is the namesake class being absent, where is the Scald!?
Hmmmmm I only briefly played the early version so I don't remember that early iteration of classes at all. Maybe they'll do something more off the wall in a sequel.
Was that ever the system? I honestly don't remember ever being like that tbh! That is, there was a class with Fortitude as a main attribute but I think (and i may be wrong) that achetypes were always just a "supertype" of classes 🤔
@@HighNorthStudios well, if they ever get to make their comeback, especially the Fortitude as the main attribute, that would be the first time an RPG makes that move, at least officially.
I floundered around the beginning part of the game until the albino leeches dropped me. I'll return to the game once Maps & Guides are available. Also, spells are really weak. They need buffing.
Martial abilities did feel more powerful to me. I have a guide coming out on party members soon. Not sure if there's any intention on adding maps into the game.
I like the mechanics in this game, but the graphics are just bad, and bad in a way the interferes with the game itself. Even the original Wizardry had a mini map, and in this game having no map is just awful.
sometimes its tough to listen to you at all but now you want me to pay.... bless you sir good luck I like most of the games you cover and its why I watch but your delivery and content are not worth a influx of cash. just my opinion

Thank you for introduce me this game. Man... i felt myself so old and yet so young again. Who cares about graphic, i mean dont get me wrong, the whole game for me is like exotic kind of beauty.
@@SlanderedGaming But later on i found there are few major problems. 1st Mage is super weak, they just dont have enough attunement for even 1 battle, and the spellburn is just ... baaaad. 2nd Some enemey are immune to critical and backstab, with super high HP as well!!! @@mtaur4113 Yes, its real, Officer is a great party leader, gets all the benefits of a warrior class HP and defence from shield, minus club and two handed weapons, but gets the Orders and good diplomacy. The mage also gets a similar spell but costs mana.
I miss this style of old school RPG ❤
Yup it's nice to have these call backs!
“Unlocks in 17 hours”
Grr hurry up!
😂
Wonder if it will get a console release at some point. I have it wish listed on Steam, but I'd love to see it on Switch (understanding the UI may be a bit more difficult without the mouse.)
Good question I am not sure.
@@SlanderedGaming Ahh, good to know! Not going to lie, I skipped ahead a bit in the video. My bad
@@slowmodeproductions All good!
@@SlanderedGaming I came here to say this :-D
Know what game did the leader skills thing mostly right? Rogue Trader. Automatically uses the person with the highest skill.
My only complaint there was the speech skills. It would have made more sense for the character with the higher speech skill than the rogue trader to be the one who speaks.
Yup I 100% agree.
if a game developers favorite game is Ultima V , you know they are going to make something awesome =]
😂
Aye aye,you and Warlockracy should collaborate
Do mercenaries "steal" XP from a total share? Otherwise is there any reason not to run mercenaries until you get a full roster?
I don't believe so. The real issue is that it costs money to hire mercenaries and money is EXTREMELY scarce.
@@SlanderedGaming Makes sense
Great channel i have new entertainment thank you
Is it possible to play the game unarmed? Because nothing is better than punching a dragon to death
I believe you can play unarmed but don't remember seeing any unarmed feats so it's probably not very good. LOL
You can choose to go unarmed though there are no specific feats for it atm! I have been considering a monk class post-launch so stay posted for that :-D
i love combat in rpgs
i always crave a good dungeon crawl
party banter i dont care about
for me baldurs gate 3 without all that romance stuff
would be a better game
If you love combat this game will definitely work for you. LOL
@@SlanderedGaming
nice i will try it out then
(its not like i dont companion interaction, but BG 3 was overkill for me, i felt like being on the road with a bunch of sexual predators... everbody was hitting on me nonstop)
Hype! :)
How does this run on the Steam Deck? If it runs good I’m buying it
It's not verified on Steam Deck yet. That's near the top of the developers list to update next.
Totally enjoyed Skald, much more than most random generic AAA games!
ayo guys i've found CRPG Bro's favourite game !
Why do you say that? 😂
@@SlanderedGaming hahaha because the dude is obsessed with skalds !!
any chance you check out colony ship , its like fallout 1 in space.
Ask and you shall receive: th-cam.com/video/sLpExciR-7w/w-d-xo.html
Maybe they'll do something more off the wall in a sequel.
considering the guts underneath , this is likely going to be fairly easy to mod , hopefully the dev encourages mods as well
@@CYI3ERPUNK if we have enough info to base the mods on. I would love to see all the original ideas for the classes.
Wow, looks like something I played when I was 10. Hmmmm
😂😂
I floundered around the beginning part of the game until the albino leeches dropped me.
I'll return to the game once Maps & Guides are available. Also, spells are really weak. They need buffing.
Martial abilities did feel more powerful to me. I have a guide coming out on party members soon. Not sure if there's any intention on adding maps into the game.
@@SlanderedGaming Thank you, right now I'd settle for Steam Community maps.
Interesting what would you like to see change about my delivery?
@@SlanderedGaming
I don't quite know but guess there seems to be like a bit of aloofness or something, but that dose not matter im wrong ;you are great. I think it was maybe asking for a subscription for money.. I was just thinking I get better info for non monetary subs elsewhere. but I did not need to say that (no excuse but I almost certainly was drunk at time of comment) sorry and good luck to you.
I would instantly buy it ,but cant see anything in that graphic
The more you play the game the more you get used to the art style. LOL
Come on man the game is good but masterpiece is a little far fetched. Everyone's so starved for a game like this it is getting way over inflated praise. Like your channel though and just subscribed to it.
Welcome to the channel! What aspect of the game did you dislike?
@@SlanderedGaming I don't dislike it, the aesthetic is great but the game is kind of simplistic and repetitive and the final act/ending feels extremely rushed. He did a great job but there is definitely a lot of room to improve on his next game.
It's a pity that the game doesn't have the great and mighty Russian language.
I am sure that's something they are working on. :)
I just hate graphics of this game and the yellow text on orange background. Ain't no way I'm playing it
You can change the text and background colors so that the text is easier to read.
im sorry but i dont get the appeal of 8 bit. im old af and that's how pretty games looked like when i was a kid. this is fugly. 16 bit i can get behind but this is just uhg
I enjoyed the look but it's definitely not for everybody. 😂
I just absolutely cannot stand this art style. I don’t find it nostalgic, I just find its lack of fidelity ugly.
It's definitely not for everybody. 😂
@@SlanderedGaming yeah like I don’t mind things that evoke a an older style, like pillars of eternity for example… but doing your entire game in like EGA style with 16colors max and the need to have several font options because none of them are particularly legible… I dunno it’d be like if the game was only for sale on cassette tape from a physical retail store too.
Looks Amazing
Yup it's a fantastic experience.
No it ain't
What did you dislike about it?
Thank you for introduce me this game.
Man... i felt myself so old and yet so young again.
Who cares about graphic, i mean dont get me wrong, the whole game for me is like exotic kind of beauty.
Awesome I am glad you enjoyed it!
@@SlanderedGaming rather more people making these game every few months than spend 7 years just making a movie game isn't it
@@SlanderedGaming But later on i found there are few major problems.
1st Mage is super weak, they just dont have enough attunement for even 1 battle, and the spellburn is just ... baaaad.
2nd Some enemey are immune to critical and backstab, with super high HP as well!!! Make combat became long and like a chore.
Great review!
Thanks glad you enjoyed it!
Wow looks amazing
Yup I recommend you check it out!
I will 😊
