    I couldn't believe the simplicity and elegance that was captured on screen knowing the amount of technical detail and planning that had to go into creating the set and how the real light would track over it and the actor knowing when and where he needed to be in a location and for how long. My favorite film of 2019. A beautiful dance between the actors and the camera with such a simple yet powerful objective driving them. Just goes to show and film doesn't need to be complicated to be brilliant.

      Literature of the 1st world war enthralls me and moves me to a degree that other literature doesn’t. It really delves into the depths of human nature and human experience. When the German retreats towards the end of the war are described, and the manic nature of the soldiers as they destroyed the land they lost hundreds of thousands of men to hold in order to fulfill the defense-in-depth scorched earth plan were described, I was brought to tears. Unlike WW2, it is much more difficult to see either sides soldiers as villains. The sheer sense of loss, the death of the old world, the insanity of it all. The Great War was the greatest tragedy in human history because it achieved exactly nothing and cost everything.
      I love renditions and recounts of it. It shouldn’t ever be forgotten. Everyone should feel what it meant and what it was, even if we can’t.

    The masterpiece starts from the beginning this whole scene is just impeccable, the best acting starts in my opinion at 2:52 laying flat to blend with the dirt then getting up to sprint into darkness and the flash lights him up running, the music to this whole scene was just perfect timing all around

    I love that the fire & the flares were the only light source for this entire scene.

    • @TheTuubster

      The lights were real, as a huge tower was build holding the lights emulating the fire (flickering like it). The burning building was CGI overlayed.

      @themainbork 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Because it is an argumentatively poor and simplistic film, the Academy likes to reward the film that has won screenplay.

    • @pjgs4933
      @pjgs4933 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      It’s a good film but story wise it isn’t really anything special or new. What’s good about 1917 is the cinematography more than anything else, and Deakins won the award.
      Parasite delivers a genre-bending mix of thrills, satire, and social critique. It’s a story that has a lot of layers to it and that’s socially and politically relevant. 1917 is really just a well made movie. Parasite is that and more, and the academy likes to reward challenging films.
      All that being said, I’d have given Little Women best picture. It’s incredible.

    Finally watched 1917 last night. Easily Sam Mendes best work and one of the best war films. Rather than focus on a group of soldiers or high rank officers, 1917 puts you in the perspective of just one soldier doing his job. Roger Deakins walked away with the Oscar for cinematography. By far his best work since No Country for Old Men. And Thomas Newman’s score is once again excellent. One question: how has he been nominated 15 times and still hasn’t received one oscar? The academy must have some people who don’t appreciate good music.
